Allegion UK: keeping compliant with fire safety regulations

Ensuring compliance when it comes to fire safety isn’t just limited to checking a fire door and its operation. Of course, this is an integral cog in the wider fire safety clockwork, but there’s much more to it than just that, Allegion UK’s Karen Trigg explains.

Keeping staff or employees in-the-know about any evacuation plans could help to save lives – this isn’t just making sure everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire, it’s about educating employees about all workplace fire safety features, like how to use fire extinguishers and ensuring escape routes are kept clear of any potential fire hazards.

Here are some of the most common fire safety threats and what you can do to avoid them.

Fire Doors

Ensuring fire doors are properly maintained will help to contain a fire and buy precious time during an emergency evacuation. Checking a fire door is operating correctly is quick and easy, so there’s no excuse for letting standards split.

Not only are there simple checks to follow with the fire door itself, but employees should also be trained on the improper use of fire doors.

This means steering clear of wedging fire doors open. Not only does this pose legal threats, but it also renders fire doors obsolete. After-all, their primary use is to close in the event of a fire to reduce the spread of fire and smoke.

What’s more, fire doors are often placed in areas that will protect lives and property, such as doors accessing exit corridors or escape routes, so it’s imperative that they aid free passage.

Correctly installed hardware

Potential fire hazards can be avoided and controlled if the door hardware is installed correctly from the outset. This starts with a building’s installer or fitter. When installing door hardware, it’s important to ensure that you’re using either an approved or accredited installer.

The person fitting should be fully trained, as hardware that is installed incorrectly will not function properly, and can be more susceptible to damage and accidents.

Appropriate staff training

According to comparethemarket.com, 54% of people in the UK wouldn’t know what to do in the event of a fire.

History reveals that if the appropriate fire safety plans aren’t in place during a fire, businesses could be faced with severe repercussions. For starters, they’ll have to deal with a large fine on account of breaching regulations.

Then comes the added weight of a fractured reputation, followed by the burden of rebuilding a damaged property and the additional costs that come with that, too.

Not to mention that taking simple measures could be the difference between life and death – the sort of responsibility business owners wouldn’t want hanging over them.

All in all; it’s safe to say that implementing the basic necessary precautions is something every business should be doing. This starts with ensuring staff and employees are up-to-date with fire safety training.

Not only will they be clear of an evacuation plan, but it will also tune employees into how to spot fire doors and door hardware that aren’t working properly. For example, if a member of staff comes across a faulty door closer, they’ll know to report the finding to the appropriate person to get it sorted.

Keeping compliant with Fire Safety Regulations is a requirement for ensuring the utmost safety in any kind of environment. Don’t risk compliance when it comes to fire safety. Rest assured, peace of mind is better than leaving it to guess-work.

Midas Safety Sri Lanka donates dry rations to affected families

Midas Safety Sri Lanka has donated dry ration packs to vulnerable families affected by the economic impact of the novel coronavirus, with the motive of helping them cope with the loss of their daily income.

The 1,200 dry ration packs comprising of basic essentials such as rice, tea, salmon, dhal and other nutritional food were given to pregnant and feeding mothers, who cannot afford to buy them due to the haltering of their livelihoods.

The list of these families was obtained with the courtesy from Ministry of Health (MOH), Public Health Inspectors (PHI) and Grama Sevakas in and around Katunayake, Biyagama and Avissawella Export Processing Zones where the three manufacturing plants of Midas Safety Sri Lanka operate. These packs were directly handed over to individuals by the company staff along with the officials from MOHs and PHIs.

Midas Safety Sri Lanka, just like many other organizations, join hands for this noble cause which can bring in much needed relief to such families till they are able to get back on their feet. ‘My husband and I work as laborers and with many difficulties we somehow manage to put food on the table. With no work at all these days we barely get by. We are very thankful for everyone involved in this kind gesture. I am at peace knowing that I’ll be able to feed my children,’ Rathna, a recipient from Kannimahara stated.

The Doctors from various MOH Offices where the donations have been done, have commended Midas Safety for initiating this project as having a nutritious diet during pregnancy is linked to good fetal brain development, a healthy birth weight, reduces the risk of many birth defects whilst the same is vital for feeding mothers since the energy, protein, nutrient and vitamin content of the breast milk is essential for the newborns and infants.

Fire truck leasing purchase programs from Pierce

A municipal lease for a fire truck is not what you think it is – a common understanding is that leasing is borrowing an asset, often with high costs, and then forfeiting the asset back to the owner after a predetermined period of time.

Municipal fire truck leasing with Pierce Manufacturing looks quite a bit different. The Pierce Financial Solutions program offered by PNC Equipment Finance provides the industry’s most extensive line of lease plans for fleet replacement.

With industry-leading tax-exempt rates, zero documentation fees, and flexible payment plans that can bypass voter referendums, Pierce Financial Solutions offers an easy and affordable way to purchase apparatus in today’s challenging economic times.

Understanding the Elements of Leasing

It’s essential to understand municipal leases, tax-exempt interest and non-appropriation clauses to realise the full benefits of leasing fire apparatus.

A municipal lease is similar to an instalment sales contract or loan. The distinguishing features of a municipal lease are “tax-exempt interest” and a “non-appropriation clause.” In a municipal lease, the Lessee owns the asset subject to the Lessor’s security interest and has lien-free ownership at the end of the term after completing all payments.

Tax-Exempt Interest

The interest income on a municipal lease is exempt from federal tax. The Lessor passes these tax savings to the Lessee in the form of a lower interest rate. The current federal corporate tax rate is 21%, which means a municipality can borrow at an interest rate that is 79% of a rate issued to a commercial enterprise.

Non-Appropriation Clause

A non-appropriation clause enables the Lessee to terminate the lease agreement at the end of the current appropriation period without further obligation or penalty. This may be done only in cases where the Lessee was unable to obtain funding for future payment obligations under the lease. The non-appropriation clause enables the Lessee to account for the lease obligation as a current expense instead of debt. In the vast majority of states, a municipal lease can be approved without a time-consuming and expensive voter referendum since it is not accounted for as debt. Please note that a non-appropriation clause is not available for volunteer fire departments.

The benefits of leasing fire apparatus are clear. When a department chooses to lease, it can:

Conserve Cash

With leasing, a department only has to come up with a fraction of the cost of the apparatus versus the entire amount and can spread the entire capital cost gradually over time. Leases do not require down payments, and generally feature lower legal and administrative costs than bonds.

Lower Cost With Prepay Discounts

In a lease, PNC Equipment Finance prepays the order and accesses Pierce’s prepay discounts which reduce the cost of the apparatus, lowers annual payments thus conserving even more cash. A lease with prepay discounts is generally more cost effective than a bond financing that does not feature prepay discounts.

Defer Payments to Future Budget Years

Payments in a lease begin one year from the time of apparatus order allowing a department to purchase at today’s cost and interest rates. The interest rate and payments are fixed at the time of order which simplifies the budgeting process. A department needs the money in next year’s budget to purchase the apparatus today. In certain situations, payments can be deferred even longer.

Maintain Fleet Replacement Plans

Fire trucks are often the most valuable assets in public safety and a lease plan enables a department to adhere to its fleet replacement plans in any economic environment through line item budgeting of the apparatus investment. Older trucks with escalating maintenance costs and depreciating resale values can be replaced with newer apparatus with lower maintenance and warranties. Maintaining fleet replacement plans is critical to matching the new technology and infrastructure demands of communities today. New apparatus offers the latest advancements in both safety and operational efficiencies benefiting communities and their first responders.

Lease Purchase

Lease purchase is an option in which municipalities pay to own the apparatus. The terms for this product range from 2 to 12 years with a one-dollar purchase option. This plan is desirable for municipalities that prefer to have ownership of the apparatus but want to spread the capital costs over a period of time.

Turn-In Lease

A turn-in lease is an option in which departments pay to use the apparatus over a predetermined lease term. This plan contains a “balloon payment” for the estimated resale value of the apparatus at the end of the lease. Terms range from 2 to 10 years with multiple annual mileage options. At the end of the term, two options are available to the department:

  1. The department can purchase the apparatus by paying or financing the balloon payment.
  2. The department can turn in the apparatus to Pierce and purchase a new Pierce apparatus. In this case, Pierce pays the balloon payment on behalf of the department. This plan is preferable for municipalities that want to pay for the use of the apparatus over the term of the lease and desire a flexible, cost-effective fleet management program.

Securex West Africa 2020 deferred and will now take place from 16-17 March 2021

Securex West Africa 2020, and it’s co-located events (Firexpo West Africa & WACSS) are now cancelled and will take place again from 16 – 17 March 2021.

The organisers had hoped that moving the event from March to the end of June 2020 it would have allowed enough time for the global health and scientific communities to get ahead of the pandemic, but since the decision, in March the developments have been all-encompassing and widespread.

While Nigeria is easing lockdown in light of heavy economic burdens, social distancing to 2m, flight restrictions and an indefinite ban on all large scale events remain in place in Lagos and there is currently no information on when this will be lifted.

Securex West event organisers stated: “It is for reasons of our community’s health, ability to plan and high expectations of their returns from Securex West Africa we have made the decision to cancel the exhibition this year.

“Obviously, this has not been an easy decision as we had hoped to postpone from the original dates would allow us to run the exhibition in 2020, but we don’t feel given the uncertainty and circumstances surrounding the ongoing pandemic we can run the event and provide you with the return you would like.”

Participants, exhibitors or partners with any questions, are encouraged to get in touch with the respective team member. For any pre-registered visitors, the organisers will keep you updated with show news ahead of next year’s edition.

HD Fire deploys fire protection applications in Yotta NM1 Data Centre, India

HD Fire systems have deployed fire protection applications at Asia’s Largest Data Centre, in Navi Mumbai, India. The data centre is called Yotta NM1 and it is spread over 600 acres at Hiranandani Fortune City in Panvel.

“This Data Centre is a global pioneer not just in terms of capability and price but more so in terms of its focus on efficiency and sustainability. We provide the most efficient power offering available in the market today – not just the lowest price of power but also a Power Usage Efficiency or PUE that is a global benchmark for the tropics,” said Darshan Hiranandani, Group CEO – Hiranandani Group.

The Data Centre will also have the capacity of 50 MW Power with 7,200 Racks and is the first of a five-data-centre complex that is being set up in the Integrated Yotta Data Centre Park. The whole complex, when fully built, has a capacity of a 30,000 racks with a power capacity of 250MW.

Pre-Action fire sprinkler system uses the concept of having a dry pipe sprinkler system and requires two separate fire detection signals in order to operate. Thus the systems are effectively designed for water sensitive areas like Data Centres – that require protection from inadvertent water flow into the sprinkler system piping.

AWG, Godiva develop disinfectant system for public spaces

With the ongoing battle against COVID-19, fire departments are challenged with preventing the spread of the virus by cleaning and disinfecting public spaces. To aid fire departments, IDEX Fire & Safety businesses this month released a new multitool sprayer and cleaning agent induction system.

The internationally diverse IDEX team from AWG in Germany and GODIVA in England joined forces using Microsoft Teams to design and test a reliable, low-cost system that connects to existing fire engines. With creativity and expertise from across the organisation, team members quickly innovated and developed the product in just two months

Godiva provided expertise on the pump, while AWG provided expertise on the eductor pump and the nozzle. The team also asked a biochemist at ThinXXS in Germany to help understand the chemical requirements for the common cleaning agents.

This combination of IDEX expertise led to the rapid development of a system optimised for this solution.

In contrast to the FS100 Portable Disinfectant Spraying System, which was launched last month, the SANISTREET FLEX system mounts on to a fire pump through the attachment of a delivery valve, and enables fire fighters and first responders to disinfect larger outdoor areas.

SANISTREET FLEX system features:

  • Efficient cleaning with 60 l/min at 7.5 bar
  • Throw distance approx. 8-10 m and spray angle of 25°
  • Suitable for use with water and liquid cleaning agents
  • Retrofit system
  • Compact solution for an easy storage
  • Storz, BI & NH hard anodized couplings
  • Protects your fire pump from risk of corrosions

Fire reported at Bournemouth beachfront

A large fire broke out at Bournemouth beach yesterday (Mon, 20th July) in front of hundreds of sunbathers – supposedly started by cooking, emergency services have said.

An unidentified beachgoer was cooking in one of the many beach huts that line West Undercliff promenade “accidentally” started the fire at 3.50pm, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

Two other beach huts caught fire and sent smoke billowing up the cliff face, with the flames spreading to 330sq ft of scrubland above the beach, the service added.

Hundreds of people watched as eight fire engines tackled the blaze – Dorset Police cordoned off the area and warned people to stay away.
