Argon and Kromek to develop D5 RIID simulator module

D5 RIID dedicated simulator module developed for Kromek

Argon Electronics, a manufacturer of CBRN simulation systems and Kromek, a developer of radiation detection technology have revealed their new collaboration.

This partnership with see the company’s work together to develop a dedicated simulator module for Kromek’s ground-breaking D5 RIID hand-held device.

Features of the module

This new capability enables operators to conduct high-fidelity radiological search exercises without the need for live radiological sources, enhancing training realism while improving safety, accessibility and operational readiness.

The launch is based upon patented RaFTS spectrometry simulation technology developed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) which is exclusively licensed to Argon.

The simulator module will allow D5 RIID users to temporarily convert their operational detector for training use to explore and use the impressive capabilities of this high-performance detector in lifelike operational scenarios.

The D5 RIID can detect and identify mixed, shielded or heavily obscured isotope configurations and confirm radionuclide identification across naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM).

Alongside industrial, medical and special nuclear materials.

All human interface aspects of the D5 RIID are fully maintained; most notably the ability to provide spectra files for reach back analysis by third parties.

The D5 RIID simulator module will also integrate with PlumeSIM, Argon’s wide area and classroom CBRN training platform, as well as being compatible with Argon’s range of survey and Personal Electronic Dosimetry simulators.

Argon Electronics platforms its Generic MultiGAS-Sim

Argon Electronics has spotlighted its Generic MultiGAS-SIM handheld simulation, which was publicly introduced in 2025.

Designed to mirror the look, feel and operation of a multi-gas detector, including button presses and screen layouts, the simulation runs on standard AA batteries.

It does not require calibration gases and can pair with an instructor’s app via Bluetooth to offer real-world oversight.

The aim is accurate, instrument-level simulation that is designed to reflect the needs of frontline responders.

According to Argon, the design removes many of the logistical burdens associated with using real detectors in training, consumable gases, regular sensor replacements and the need for controlled environments.

The system uses simulated signals rather than hazardous materials, meaning that training can be carried out almost anywhere: indoors, outdoors, in confined spaces or large open areas.

The wider ecosystem

Argon’s wider ecosystem, including Long Range Vapour Source (LRVS) emitters and options such as PlumeSIM for complex muti-hazard scenarios.

This allows instructors to escalate from simple leak simulations to large-scale CBRNe training events.

Arrighi continued: “In a key 2025 NATO exercise, the MultiGAS-SIM exhibited high fidelity.

“Teams navigated hypoxic undergrounds and mixed lab contaminants.

“Real-time readings revealed overlooked flaws. It understated realism heightened focus, exposing hidden weaknesses.

“What matters most is the realism these tools enable. Atmospheric hazards are often subtle, invisible and fast-changing and effective training needs to capture that.”
