The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) will host its annual Conference & Expo at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas on June 22-24, 2026.

NFPA confirmed the event will include more than 130 educational sessions covering issues in fire, electrical and life safety, including code compliance, emergency preparedness and building safety.

The event will bring together thousands of professionals from across the sector to attend sessions on global safety issues, fire protection systems, industrial hazards and electrical safety.

Exhibitors, theatres and technical meeting programme

The NFPA Expo will feature more than 420 exhibitors presenting products and services aimed at supporting compliance with codes and standards in building design, construction and operation.

Attendees will have access to three NFPA Specialty Theaters covering topics such as fire protection system inspections, artificial intelligence in facility management and wildfire preparedness.

The Responder Theater programme includes updates on the Firefighter Cancer Cohort Study, high-rise firefighting tactics, leadership accountability and survey findings from the Needs Assessment of the U.S. Fire Service.

The NFPA Products and Solutions Theater will present information on NFPA tools, resources and product offerings.

A three-day Spotlight on Public Education programme will focus on public health topics and community risk reduction.

The Spotlight on Latin America programme will deliver Spanish language sessions on current industry trends affecting the region.

Dan Chuparkoff will deliver the keynote at the opening general session, drawing on experience in technology leadership roles across multiple organisations.

The NFPA Technical Meeting is scheduled for June 25-26, allowing members and registered participants to vote on certified amending motions relating to NFPA Standards.

NFPA explains how 2026 NEC draft changes can be traced and reviewed

NEC changes and where to research them

A new NFPA video explains how to research why changes were made in the 2026 National Electrical Code (NEC).

The video features Corey Hannahs, Master Electrician and Senior Electrical Specialist at the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), who demonstrates how users can access draft documents, committee statements and public input records to understand the reasoning behind specific revisions.

He explains that the 2026 NEC was issued last fall and that the public input stage is already open for the 2029 NEC, reflecting the three-year development cycle used across NFPA codes and standards.

Using NFPA tools to compare first and second drafts

Hannahs demonstrates how to navigate the NFPA standards development process and the NEC document information webpage at nfpa.org/70 to view current and prior editions.

He shows how the first draft presents changes from the 2023 NEC, with additions and deletions clearly marked, and explains that users must log in with a free NFPA account to view the draft material.

Using section 110.16 as an example, he outlines how users can select individual revisions to view committee statements explaining the intent behind changes, along with associated public inputs.

He then moves to the second draft view, describing how it presents a refined version of the first draft language after public comments have been reviewed and additional revisions made.

Committee reasoning and public input behind revised wording

Hannahs explains that committee statements and public comments provide insight into how and why wording changes are made.

He highlights examples where language was adjusted to align with the NEC style manual and where revisions were introduced to clarify marking requirements and practical application.

He also points to changes in arc flash marking requirements, including an update to the timestamp label so it reflects the date when the arc flash risk assessment was completed rather than the date the label was applied, which he says provides clearer context for future system reviews and modifications.

He says the video is intended to help users independently investigate NEC changes, gain clarity on committee decisions and build a better understanding of how draft revisions develop into final code language.

Montana electrical inspectors establish NFPA Electrical Inspection Section chapter

The Montana Electrical Inspectors Association has joined the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to launch an Electrical Inspection Section Affiliate Chapter (EIS).

The NFPA announcement said the Montana Electrical Inspectors Association will provide training, education and networking opportunities for the state’s electrical inspection community.

Tim McClintock, NFPA lead regional electrical specialist and Executive Secretary of the Electrical Inspection Section, said: “NFPA is proud to welcome its newest EIS Affiliate Chapter.

“Through this relationship, NFPA and the Montana electrical enforcement community can work hand-in-hand, amplifying our collective voice to tackle today’s electrical challenges and advance safety in the community.”

McClintock added: “A strong electrical inspection program plays a vital role in safety and compliance with NFPA 70, National Electrical Code (NEC) and other codes, helping safeguard people and property from electrical-related hazards.

Other EIS Affiliate Chapters and membership details

NFPA said the Montana Electrical Inspectors Association joins other electrical inspector associations among the first organisations to create an NFPA EIS Affiliate Chapter in the US.

The other associations listed were Alabama, Colorado, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio and Rhode Island.

Prisons top Buckinghamshire fires list as deliberate incidents lead causes

Prisons lead Buckinghamshire public building fire breakdown

Public buildings in Buckinghamshire have recorded 271 commercial fires per 250,000 people over the past five years.

Research by health and safety consultants Rhino Safety ranked Buckinghamshire third-highest in England on that measure.

The research listed Greater Manchester first with 285 fires per 250,000 people, followed by Staffordshire with 278.

Nottinghamshire and Shropshire completed the top five with 267 and 266 fires per 250,000 people respectively.

Within Buckinghamshire, prisons accounted for 36.9% of commercial fires, followed by retail buildings at 6.7% and industrial manufacturing buildings excluding factories at 4.6%.

Other building categories listed included offices and call centres at 3.5%, permanent agricultural buildings at 3.5%, pre-schools, nurseries or infant primary schools at 3.3%, pubs, wine bars and bars at 3.2%, nursing and care homes at 3.1% and restaurants and cafes at 2.8%.

Ignition sources and causes recorded in Buckinghamshire

A third of ignition sources in Buckinghamshire commercial fires were listed as unspecified at 32.7%.

Wiring, cabling and plugs were the largest listed source at 11.7%, followed by smoking materials at 7.3% and naked flames such as a lighted piece of paper or card at 6.2%.

Batteries and generators accounted for 5.2% pressures, while cookers including ovens accounted for 3.5%.

Other ignition sources listed included cigarette lighters at 2.9%, fluorescent lights at 2.7%, microwave ovens at 2.5%, other industrial equipment at 2.5% and deep fat fryers at 1.7%.

The dataset also reported that 44.4% of fires at Buckinghamshire establishments over the past five years were started deliberately.

Other accidental causes were listed at 18.2%, faulty appliances and leads at 13.5%, faulty fuel supplies at 10.2% and misuse of equipment and appliances at 6.6%.

Rhino Safety comments on end of year safety steps

Simon Walter from health and safety consultancy Rhino Safety said: “With the festive season upon us, safety should still be the number one priority for businesses in the Buckinghamshire area, which have experienced the third-highest number of public building fires since the pandemic.

“With the majority of fires being started deliberately, the first thing business-owners should do is ensure all smoke alarms and sprinkler systems are up to date and working, as well as ensuring access to the building after hours is secured and removing any/all flammable materials, which can help fires spread instantly.

“Almost a quarter (23.8%) of commercial fires are started via faulty appliances, leads or fuel supplies, so business owners must hire a licensed electrician to carry out any work on the premises, as well as carrying out checks on lighting, electricals or other elements that could cause a fire (this is usually covered as part of your annual Fire Risk Assessment).

“User error accounts for one in eight fires (11.7%), including the misuse of equipment or appliances, careless handling of fire or hot substances, or placing articles too close to a heat source.

“These are incidents that can easily be avoided with more fire safety education and training for all staff, as well as ensuring your Fire Risk Assessment is up to date, and that all fire safety equipment is present and in working order.”

The research also set out the building types, ignition sources and stated causes recorded across Buckinghamshire commercial fire incidents over the past five years.

NFPA warns home fires risk rises as Christmas trees stay up into January

January spike cited in home fires

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has urged US households to remove Christmas trees promptly after the holiday season, citing data showing that 35% of Christmas tree home fires happen in January.

The organisation said the risk increases the longer a tree remains indoors because it dries out and becomes more flammable over time.

Lorraine Carli, Vice President of Outreach and Advocacy at the National Fire Protection Association, said: “As much as we all enjoy the look and feel of Christmas trees in our homes, they’re large combustible items that have the potential to result in serious fires.

“The longer they’re in the home, the more of a risk they present.”

Why Christmas tree fires can be severe

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) said home fires involving Christmas trees are relatively uncommon but are more likely to be serious when they occur.

The organisation linked that severity to how quickly a dried-out tree can burn compared with a well-watered tree.

Carli said: “Fires that begin with Christmas trees represent a very small but notable part of the U.S. fire problem, considering that they are generally in use for a short time each year,”

Five-year averages and property losses

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) said that between 2020 and 2024 there was an estimated annual average of 143 home structure fires that began with Christmas trees.

The organisation said those fires resulted in seven civilian deaths and 13 civilian injuries.

The NFPA put direct property damage from these incidents at $15 million per year on average across the same period.

Disposal and packing guidance for decorations

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) advised using local community recycling programmes to dispose of Christmas trees where available.

The organisation said trees should not be kept in a garage or left outside.

The NFPA said people should unplug electrical decorations by gripping the plug, because pulling the cord can damage the wire and insulation.

The organisation advised inspecting light strings as they are packed away and discarding any sets with loose connections, broken sockets or cracked or bare wires.

The NFPA said sets of lights can be wrapped and stored in individual plastic bags or around cardboard.

The organisation advised storing electrical decorations in a dry place away from children and pets where they will not be damaged by water or dampness.

The acquisition forms part of Normec’s growth strategy in the UK and expands its reach in the country’s electrical compliance sector.

ARMA Connect will continue operating under its existing brand and leadership team, now supported by Normec’s broader group infrastructure.

The acquisition was facilitated by Dow Schofield Watts, whose corporate finance team in the North West advised the shareholders of ARMA Connect.

Gas detection systems are especially critical in environments where gas leaks pose a significant threat, such as industrial plants or underground facilities, food and beverage to chemical production and wastewater treatment.

Linear heat detection (LHD) systems are also crucial in large, open spaces, such as tunnels, conveyor belts and industrial plants, which are common in the region. LHD systems utilise cables to detect temperature changes along their length, enabling the precise identification of heat sources. This capability is advantageous in situations where traditional fire alarm systems might not be effective. 

Tackling harsh conditions: Maintenance in the Middle East 

Despite their importance, fire safety systems in the Middle East face several maintenance challenges. The region’s harsh climate, with its extreme heat and humidity, can significantly impact the performance and longevity of these systems.

High temperatures can cause sensor degradation, while dust, sand and humidity can trigger false alarms or damage components. Additionally, the reliance on backup batteries in emergency lighting and fire alarm systems necessitates regular checks and replacements to ensure optimal performance, particularly during power outages that are more frequent in desert climates. 

As the complexity of fire safety systems increases, especially with the integration of wireless communication and innovative technologies, maintenance becomes more challenging. Ensuring seamless integration of various systems, from voice evacuation to gas detection and emergency lighting, requires careful planning and expert knowledge.

Fire safety professionals play a crucial role in this process, conducting regular inspections and timely system calibration to prevent malfunctions and maintain operational readiness during emergencies.

The future is now: AI, IoT & smarter systems 

The integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) has enhanced fire safety systems in the Middle East. IoT-enabled devices allow real-time monitoring, while AI algorithms analyse data to predict potential fire risks and reduce false alarms.

AI-powered systems can autonomously respond to detected fire hazards, making quicker decisions than humans in some situations. Additionally, AI aids in predictive maintenance, identifying issues before they lead to system failures, which is particularly beneficial in harsh climates. 

Cloud-based fire safety solutions offer numerous benefits for large and complex infrastructures in the Middle East. They enable remote monitoring of systems, provide a platform for data storage and analysis and facilitate informed decision-making. These features ensure continuous and effective fire safety, even in the most challenging environments. 

Emirates Safety Laboratory’s contribution to fire safety in the Middle East 

The Emirates Safety Laboratory (ESL) plays a crucial role in enhancing fire safety systems throughout the Middle East, particularly in the Emirate of Dubai. As a contributor in testing and certification, ESL ensures that the fire safety products deployed across the region meet the highest standards of performance and reliability. The laboratory conducts rigorous testing and certification processes to validate the effectiveness of fire safety systems,  

Moreover, ESL is actively involved in developing standards for new systems, including wireless connectivity for interconnected detectors, particularly in villa developments. As these systems become more prevalent, they must operate seamlessly in complex environments, such as high-rise buildings, industrial plants and sprawling commercial complexes.
