Fire safety events announced for November 2024

European Fire Safety Week (EUFSW) will take place from 18th November 2024.

As reported by The Forum for European Electrical Domestic Safety (FEEDS), the event will bring together EU policymakers, firefighters, researchers, and other stakeholders to address critical fire safety challenges.

This year’s theme focuses on protecting the most vulnerable populations in Europe, with workshops, webinars, and discussions on a range of topics.

Among the topics to be explored are fire safety and sustainability, home safety strategies, and the implementation of electrical safety measures.

The event will also feature a focus on the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, and a webinar co-organised with the European Commission’s DG MOVE will highlight electric vehicle fire safety.

Addressing fire and electrical safety under new EU directives

One of the key themes of EUFSW 2024 will be the role of electrical safety in preventing fires across the continent.

FEEDS has organised a session on how fire and electrical safety measures can be implemented in line with the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.

This aims to improve the safety of homes and buildings throughout Europe by integrating fire-resistant and sustainable technologies.

Electric vehicles (EVs) and the associated recharging infrastructure are an emerging area of concern in fire safety, especially in covered parking areas.

A webinar, co-organised with the European Commission’s DG MOVE, will address the risks associated with EVs and how current and upcoming EU legislation is tackling these issues.

The session will highlight the best practices and solutions for ensuring fire safety in the growing EV market, with input from leading experts.

Topics covered will include existing regulations and the challenges posed by electric vehicle charging in enclosed spaces.

Smoke alarms campaign and high-level policy discussions

The 2024 EUFSW will also include a dedicated focus on increasing the use of smoke alarms in domestic homes through the #smokealarmssevelives campaign.

This will be supported by European Smoke Alarm Day, which features a webinar on increasing smoke alarm usage across European homes.

In addition to this, high-level discussions will be held in the European Parliament to spark debates on future fire safety priorities.

New safety checklists for renewable energy systems unveiled by FEEDS

On April 5, 2024, the Forum for European Electrical Domestic Safet (FEEDS) introduced comprehensive electrical safety check-lists targeted at installations of photovoltaic panels, heat pumps, energy storage systems, and electrical vehicle charging points.

This initiative, motivated by the urgent need for electrification to drive the Energy Transition, aims to address the safety and preparedness of domestic electrical installations amidst the backdrop of 132 million obsolete electrical setups across the EU.

Electrical installations stand at the core of the Energy Transition, crucial for enhancing the energy performance of buildings through efficient renewable energy consumption and production.

With the expected pivotal role of electrification in achieving building efficiency and energy system integration, the initiative underscores the necessity for reliable and suitably dimensioned electrical infrastructures.

This is essential for incorporating today’s available energy performance devices seamlessly.

Addressing the challenges of modern electrical installations

According to the International Copper Association Europe, for buildings to evolve sustainably and efficiently, electrical installations must be not only safe and ready but also smart and efficient to integrate future systems and functionalities.

The safety check-lists released by FEEDS aim to spotlight essential actions for the successful deployment of high-load or electricity-producing installations in domestic settings.

These check-lists, designed to be accessible to a broad audience including clients, installers, and regulators, focus on general approaches rather than specific technical details.

FEEDS’ commitment to electrical safety

In light of the central significance of electrical installations in decarbonising buildings and the current state of European electrical infrastructure, as assessed by FEEDS, the main safety concern arises when new electrical loads or production capabilities are added to outdated or inappropriate installations.
