Emergency response partnership begins with fire departments

webAI has announced a strategic collaboration with Qwake Technologies to assess predictive AI capabilities for emergency response, starting with fire departments.

The company said the work is intended to combine webAI’s edge intelligence infrastructure with Qwake’s critical operations platform to give incident commanders better information during incidents.

The collaboration is centred on moving AI into field use by bringing intelligence to where data originates.

The companies said this could create a practical tool for the fireground and could help operators, command staff and city leaders manage risk and improve operational effectiveness without additional resources.

How the companies described the work

webAI said Qwake currently embeds sensors and AI into emergency environments, including on people and vehicles, and that the two companies are examining how a predictive edge intelligence system could support the modern fireground.

David Stout, founder and CEO of webAI, said: “AI shouldn’t live in a distant cloud.

“It should be a practical tool that helps people in their own communities.

“Through our collaboration with Qwake, we see an opportunity to bring edge intelligence to the fireground in a way that could give first responders more real-time, mission-critical technology to stay safe and stay ahead of crisis.”

webAI said the escalation prediction tool is the first step in a wider shared vision for intelligent infrastructure across cities.

Fire departments funding programme opens for 2026

Nutella, Pearl Milling Company and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) have launched the 2026 Stacks for Giving Back programme, which will provide $50,000 in grants and 350 pancake breakfast fundraiser kits for local fire departments.

The NVFC announced that 10 departments will each receive a $5,000 grant, with Nutella providing $25,000 and Pearl Milling Company adding a further $25,000.

The programme is open to departments that are more than 50% volunteer, serve a population of 25,000 or less, are based in the US and have an NVFC member.

Applications for the grants are due by 30 April.

Consumers can also nominate departments to receive a Pancake Breakfast Kit for a local fundraiser.

A total of 350 departments will receive kits containing supplies and ingredients, including Nutella and Pearl Milling Company pancake mix.

Fire departments cited as facing funding pressure

The announcement states that volunteer fire departments often face difficulty securing funding for equipment, firefighter recruitment and retention, and the demands linked to rising call volumes and new training requirements.

The programme was launched to help departments secure operational necessities and support local fundraising activity.

Examples from the 2025 round were also included as part of the announcement.

The Landis Volunteer Fire Department in Marshall, Arkansas used its grant to buy SCBA tanks and wildland fire protection equipment and gear.

Lucinda Rolen, department treasurer, said: “Leveraging the grant money by purchasing new and pre-owned personal protective equipment from online suppliers allowed us to provide more equipment to better protect our firefighters when they are protecting the community.”

The Cleveland Volunteer Fire Department in Alabama used its grant to purchase equipment and tools that allowed all of its trucks to return to service.

David Hackworth, Assistant Fire Chief, said: “Morale has improved, training has improved, and members can now work on and train on a truck that was out of service and unavailable until we received this grant, which enabled us to get the equipment we needed to move enough resources to use this valuable truck.”

Chili Fremont Fire & Rescue also described how the funding supported a broader equipment purchase than first planned.

“By explaining the grant’s mission and goals, the vendor was able to adjust pricing, reduce shipping costs, and help maximise the impact of the funds.

“Being transparent with vendors can stretch grant dollars while maintaining the grant objective.”

The 2026 grant applications and department nominations for the fundraiser kits both close on 30 April.

Insight Training outlines thermal maintenance checks for TIC users

Thermal imaging camera checks for daily readiness

Insight Training has published maintenance guidance for fire departments using thermal imaging cameras, setting out daily checks and handling steps intended to reduce the risk of equipment failure and extend service life.

In a blog article by Andrew Starnes, the company said one of the most common causes of thermal imaging camera malfunction is poor care and maintenance.

The guidance says a designated crew member should inspect each device daily to confirm it is operational and free from visible defects.

That process starts with powering on the camera and checking that it starts fully within 30 seconds.

If start-up takes longer, the unit may need to be returned to the manufacturer for servicing.

The article adds that cameras stored below freezing or above 104°F may take longer to power up.

Battery status should also be checked during the inspection.

Most units display a four-bar battery indicator, with each bar representing at least 30 minutes of operating time.

Newer models may offer up to six hours of battery life, although power use can rise when functions such as flashlights, recording or transmission are active.

Users are advised to remove the battery and inspect charging contacts for dirt or damage.

Where a truck-mounted charger is used, both the charger contacts and camera contacts should be cleaned with an alcohol wipe.

Soap, water and solvents are not recommended for those components.

The lens should also be inspected for scratches or chips that may affect image quality.

A flashlight may be needed during this check because defects can be difficult to spot on lenses with diamond coating.

Operators are then advised to scan the surrounding area for signs of detector problems, including image ghosting, static lines on the screen or black dots that remain visible after scanning.

The guidance says black dots can appear after exposure to intense radiant heat sources such as the sun, arc welders or plasma cutters.

It also advises crews to confirm that application modes, recording functions and the default reset function are all working correctly during the scan test.

A radio frequency interference test is also recommended as part of the daily check.

This involves keying a portable firefighter radio next to the camera to confirm that transmissions do not affect the display.

For devices produced since 2013, the test should show no visual interference.

If the display freezes or shows white static, the unit may have damaged or incorrectly installed electromagnetic interference coatings and should be returned for repair.

Thermal handling and charging practices

Insight Training also sets out storage, cleaning and carrying guidance for thermal imaging cameras used in fire service operations.

Cameras should be returned to a charging dock, secured to self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipment or placed in another designated ready position after use.

The article warns against leaving units on hot surfaces or on vehicle dashboards in direct sunlight.

Camera housings should be cleaned with a mild soap solution.

Paint removers, degreasers and solvents should be avoided because they may damage seals designed to protect against water and dust ingress.

The guidance says some departments have used abrasive tools or strong cleaning agents that can damage protective housings and shorten the working life of the device.

Users are also warned not to remove the battery and submerge the camera in water during cleaning because this can void the warranty and permanently damage the unit.

Port covers for PC connections should remain closed to prevent dust or moisture entering the camera.

The article states that fire service thermal imaging cameras provide approximate thermal readings and are not intended for measuring extreme heat sources.

It adds that pointing a device at radiant heat sources such as the sun, plasma cutters or high-powered lasers can damage the detector and void the warranty.

According to the guidance, this can happen when a firefighter removes equipment and leaves the camera facing upwards towards the sun.

The company also recommends securing cameras to gear in a way that keeps them accessible and reduces the chance of damage or entanglement.

Units should not be dragged, used as forcible entry tools or left in active fire conditions.

Retractable cords are described as a potential entanglement risk if they catch on ladders or other equipment.

The article recommends checking attachment hardware regularly and using locking or swivel-lock carabiners to reduce the chance of accidental detachment.

It also describes a strap worn over the firefighter’s coat, similar to a radio strap, as an alternative carrying option.

Some firefighters, the article says, use seatbelt webbing with a large carabiner as an attachment point.

It also warns against attaching retractable straps to the back of SCBA equipment because that arrangement can damage the camera and shorten strap life.

Battery management is presented as another factor in long-term maintenance.

The guidance recommends allowing batteries to charge fully and discharge fully to reduce the effect of incomplete charging cycles on lifespan.

It notes that lithium-ion batteries do not technically develop a memory effect and are rated for a finite number of charge cycles.

Dirty contacts or poor placement in a truck charger can lead to repeated short charging cycles that reduce battery life.

The article also notes that TIC units are designed to meet IP67 ratings for dust and water resistance, with open battery ports or exposed connection covers increasing the risk of damage.

The guidance presents routine inspection, correct storage and careful handling as part of maintaining readiness and protecting thermal imaging equipment over time.

Why HEN is pairing firefighting tools with live data

HEN expands from nozzle design into incident data

HEN Technologies has developed a firefighting platform that links connected field equipment with cloud-based incident monitoring as it expands beyond its original nozzle design work.

TechCrunch reported that the company, founded in 2020 by Sunny Sethi in Hayward, California, began by designing fire nozzles intended to use water more efficiently and extinguish fires up to three times faster than traditional equipment while using less water.

HEN said its nozzle design followed computational fluid dynamics research funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, which examined how water suppresses fire and how wind affects suppression performance.

The design allows control of droplet size and water velocity, which helps streams stay coherent in windy conditions and improves suppression efficiency.

The company has since added monitors, valves, overhead sprinklers and pressure devices, and it is developing a flow-control device called Stream IQ alongside discharge control systems.

Each device includes custom electronics and sensors that support connected monitoring and data collection during firefighting operations.

The company has filed 20 patent applications related to the technology, with several patents already granted.

Sethi said: “But you can’t have [predictive analytics] unless you have good-quality data.

“You can’t have good-quality data unless you have the right hardware.”

HEN reports commercial growth and wider deployment

TechCrunch said the wider platform tracks water flow, hydrant usage, pressure levels and environmental conditions during incidents, and it also integrates weather data with GPS information from connected equipment.

The system can issue alerts linked to shifting wind conditions or water supply limitations during an incident.

HEN launched its first commercial products in 2023 with 10 fire department customers and about $200,000 in revenue.

Revenue rose to $1.6 million in 2024 and reached $5.2 million the following year.

The company now serves around 1,500 fire departments and projects revenue of $20 million in the current year.

Its equipment is supplied to organisations including the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Army bases, naval research facilities, NASA and Abu Dhabi Civil Defense.

HEN distributes through more than 120 distributors and exports to 22 countries.

The company also qualified for inclusion in the U.S. General Services Administration procurement system, which allows federal agencies to buy its equipment through approved contracting channels.

Sethi said: “The hardest part of building this company is that this market is tough because it’s a B2C play when you think of convincing the customers to buy, but the procurement cycle is B2B.

“So you have to really make a product that resonates with people — with the end user — but you still have to go through government purchasing cycles, and we have cracked both of those.”

In January 2026, HEN announced a $20 million Series A funding round alongside $2 million in venture debt from Silicon Valley Bank.

The round was led by O’Neil Strategic Capital with participation from NSFO, Tanas Capital and z21 Ventures.

Its total funding now exceeds $30 million as the company continues building its operational dataset on water behaviour in live fire environments.

The deadline for U.S. fire departments to complete the 2025 U.S. Needs Assessment survey has been extended to February 15, 2026.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced the extension and said it is intended to increase participation and strengthen the response rate.

Shelby Hall, fire analysis research manager with NFPA’s Fire Analysis and Research Division, said: “The U.S. Needs Assessment survey provides one of the single most effective opportunities for fire departments to make their needs and challenges known amongst the very groups and policymakers that determine where fire department funding and resources are allocated.

“That’s why participation from every fire department across the country is critical to its success and impact.”

Survey scope, changes and how it is completed

The survey is conducted every five years to capture current resources and staffing levels among U.S. fire departments, and to identify where they can meet community needs and where gaps exist.

Hall said: “The response rate for the 2020 survey was the lowest to date across all U.S. Needs Assessment surveys, which was not unexpected given the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Increasing the response rate for the new survey will help ensure that the final 2025 U.S. Needs Assessment report continues to be the impactful resource it has been since its launch in 2001.”

NFPA said it worked with representatives from the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) to identify current issues and challenges.

The release said more than 40 changes were made to the 2025 survey, including new questions about responses to lithium-ion battery fires and specialised rescue operations, plus updated questions on physical and behavioral health, medical programmes and community risk reduction.

The overall number of questions was reduced to make completion less time-consuming.

The survey can be completed online, and a print version was also mailed out.

The survey must be completed by a fire department chief or an assigned designee and returned to NFPA by February 15, 2026.

Rosenbauer America has donated 24,000 KN95 facemasks to first responders as a thank you for their dedication through the COVID-19 pandemic – distributed to fire departments across the United States and Canada.
