Fire-Dex turnout system verified for UL particulate ingress requirements

Fire-Dex verification covers AeroFlex configuration

Fire-Dex has announced that UL Solutions has verified particulate ingress results for its AeroFlex turnout system under UL Verification 1641.

The company said the verification confirms performance to NFPA Particle Inward Leakage testing requirements when the ensemble is worn in a specific configuration.

The evaluated setup included the AeroFlex coat with a properly engaged SCBA, along with AeroFlex pants fitted with the optional particulate-blocking barrier.

Results are published by UL Solutions under Verification 1641.

Test method and reported findings

Testing used a controlled particulate chamber in which a firefighter performed prescribed actions for 20 minutes.

Researchers then assessed skin contamination after the gear was carefully doffed.

According to Fire-Dex, UL’s verification posting reports less than 1 microgram exposure on the wearer across the ensemble.

The findings confirm that a properly engaged SCBA helps seal the coat-to-pant interface, preventing particulate migration into the torso area even without an added particulate barrier in the coat.

The optional particulate-blocking barrier in the pants provided added lower body protection.

AeroFlex design and company comments

Fire-Dex said the AeroFlex turnout system is built around zoned breathability.

It places VaporLite breathable composite panels at the side seams, armpits, inner thighs and behind the knees.

It also integrates AeroVent Technology within those zones to move warm humid air outward under pressure, with an integrated particulate-blocking element in the vent.

Todd Herring, V.P. of Product Innovation and Strategy, Fire-Dex, said: “Particulate barriers in pant/coat interfaces add protection from contaminants, but the trade-off is that they can limit breathability.

“AirFlex is designed differently, with vents that help hot air escape from inside turnouts but that also keep particulates out.

“That gives departments a clearer path when weighing particulate protection and heat management inside the coat, because our UL-verified system addresses both in one ensemble.

“This design supports breathability, wearer comfort, and operational mobility while maintaining required certified performance.”

Fire-Dex said AeroFlex was engineered to address the effect that added particulate barrier layers can have on moisture vapour transport through a structural coat.

Gear Wash expands in California

Gear Wash has opened a new facility in Santa Fe Springs, California, marking its second location in the state and its 14th facility nationwide.

The company announced that the site will provide National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) compliant personal protective equipment (PPE) care for fire departments in the Santa Fe Springs region.

California’s adherence to NFPA cleaning and repair guidelines is a legal mandate and the new facility will offer cleaning, inspection, repair and alteration services for PPE.

Baskhron will align operational and strategic goals, strengthen cross-functional processes and support teams across the organisation.

His remit includes prioritising associate well-being, product quality and day-to-day execution to support the company’s focus on protecting manufacturing teams and frontline crews.

The company explained that Pfahl’s appointment is part of its wider commitment to advancing digital transformation and improving data security.

It added that his responsibilities will include aligning IT operations across Fire-Dex and its subsidiary company, Gear Wash.

Pfahl brings over 20 years of digital leadership experience

Fire-Dex reported that Pfahl previously served as Vice President of IT & Digitalization and Regional CIO – Americas at Schaeffler Group.

During his time with the automotive and industrial supplier, he led technology transformation projects and introduced enterprise systems including SAP.

He also managed the cross-regional integration of IT operations across North and South America.

Fire-Dex has confirmed that a leadership transition will begin in 2026, with President Lauren Burke DeVere set to take over as Chief Executive Officer.

According to Fire-Dex, Burke DeVere will begin sharing CEO responsibilities with current Chief Executive Steve Allison from the start of 2026, ahead of his planned retirement in early 2027.

Fire-Dex added that John Karban, currently Vice President of Operations, will be promoted to President as part of the same succession plan.

Burke DeVere to become CEO following phased transition

The manufacturer stated that the transition will take place over 15 months, during which time Burke DeVere and Allison will jointly manage executive responsibilities.

Steve Allison, who joined Fire-Dex in 2014 and has served as CEO since, said: “It’s been the honour of my career to lead this incredible team.

“It’s humbling and exciting to step into the CEO role, especially following in Steve’s footsteps,” said Lauren Burke DeVere.

Burke DeVere joined Fire-Dex in 2019 and became President in 2021. The company said her promotion follows a period of sustained growth and strategic change.

The company said Karban began his career with Fire-Dex as a Plant Manager and later led operational, logistics and engineering initiatives.

According to Fire-Dex, the Virtual Sizer uses AI algorithms to calculate user measurements based on basic inputs including height, weight and shoe size.

The company reported that over 6,500 entries have already been processed through the tool.

Memphis Fire uses Virtual Sizer to onboard out-of-state recruits

The City of Memphis Fire Department in Tennessee has used the Virtual Sizer to support the sizing of new recruits, especially those located outside of the region.

Keith James, Division Chief of Logistical Services at Memphis Fire, said the department has used the tool to size between 25 and 30 recruits from outside the local area.

James said: “It can be difficult for them to fly or drive in just for processing and fittings, especially when we’re trying to get gear ordered quickly so it arrives during class.”

He added: “We tested it first with a few people locally and found the output matched our sizing. That gave us the comfort level to roll it out further.”

Time-saving and accuracy benefits highlighted

According to Fire-Dex, the tool helps departments reduce delays and avoid the need for rework or resizing, while helping ensure that gear fits properly.

James said the implementation of the Virtual Sizer at Memphis Fire was straightforward and effective, with the department reporting no issues or resizing needs after deployment.

Herring said: “Our AI tool streamlines ordering, but the real winners here are the firefighters. The process is faster, but more importantly, emergency responders end up with gear that fits well and lets them focus on the job.”
