Advanced fire testing laboratory launched in South Africa

Ignis Fire Testing has launched an expanded laboratory and workshop near Cape Town and Stellenbosch, marking it as the largest privately-owned fire testing facility in Africa.

This facility aims to meet the increasing global demand for comprehensive fire safety testing services.

Under the leadership of Dirk Streicher, who has over 40 years of experience in civil engineering, the 1500-square-metre facility features an 18-metre-high roof and high-quality fire testing equipment.

It includes three custom-built furnaces, five reaction-to-fire tests, and a cone calorimeter, all designed and built by Ignis Fire Testing’s team in South Africa.

The facility also incorporates sustainability measures such as rainwater harvesting, solar power, and advanced air filtering systems.

Streicher said: “We saw the gap in the market for local and international fire testing.

“Where do you go if you have to test products or materials to adhere to fire safety standards? There are few local options.

“Even internationally, the testing demand is bigger than the supply, leading to major backlogs.

“It is also very expensive for South Africans to test abroad.”

Comprehensive range of fire safety tests

The new facility offers an extensive array of fire safety tests adhering to international standards, including ISO codes.

These capabilities include fire resistance tests for both load-bearing and non-load-bearing structures, a variety of reaction-to-fire classification tests, cone calorimetry confirmation testing, room corner and gas suppression tests, façade tests, and tests for supplementary fire equipment such as sprinklers.

The laboratory is equipped to evaluate various products, including lithium-ion batteries and solar panels, and can adapt to special requirements beyond standard procedures.

This extensive range ensures that Ignis Fire Testing can meet diverse client needs both locally and internationally.

Research and development collaboration

Ignis Fire Testing is also committed to advancing fire safety research and development through its partnership with Stellenbosch University’s Fire Engineering Research Unit (FireSUN), led by Prof. Richard Walls.

Dirk Streicher, who is an extraordinary faculty member at Stellenbosch University, collaborates closely with students and staff, providing access to the facility for research purposes.

This partnership supports post-graduate degrees and co-authored research papers, aiming to push the boundaries of fire safety engineering.

Warringtonfire enhances fire safety testing with new SBI equipment

New SBI testing equipment installed at Warringtonfire

Warringtonfire has invested in new equipment to increase capacity for single-burning item (SBI) testing of construction products at its Holmesfield Road laboratory in Warrington.

As reported by Warringtonfire, SBI testing is a key method for assessing a product’s reaction to fire performance.

This includes measuring lateral flame spread, rate of heat release, propensity for the production of flaming droplets, and the rate and amount of smoke production.

The new equipment, commissioned in June, will be used to test various construction products, including wall and ceiling coverings and linear pipe insulation, in line with BS EN 13823.

Details of the SBI testing process

The SBI test utilises a 30kW propane-powered sandbox burner to simulate a wastepaper basket or small chair fire.

The test specimens are mounted on two vertically oriented walls arranged to form a 90° open corner.

Warringtonfire’s Holmesfield Road laboratory is one of a few UKAS-accredited sites in the UK offering SBI testing.

This new equipment is the latest in a series of major investments by parent company Element Materials Technology in Warrington.

Future developments in Warringtonfire facilities

The investment follows the announcement of a new $30 million fire resistance facility at Birchwood Park, set to open in January 2025.

This 101k sq. ft laboratory will triple the current testing capacity in Warrington.

Upon the opening of the Birchwood Park facility, the Holmesfield Road laboratory will become a centre of excellence for reaction to fire testing.

It will continue to operate small-scale testing for flame spread and heat release.

Dr Karthick Govarthanam, General Manager at Firefly – TBA Protective Technologies Ltd, talks fire testing, transparency and the Fire Safety Event

What is your role at TBA Firefly? 

I am General Manager of the business, having previously lead technical and product development functions in other parts of our group, also specialising in thermal resistant technical textiles. Product development, testing, compliance and certifications is absolutely central to the FIREFLY proposition and I remain very focused on this area of the business, being the technical lead as well as the General Manager. 

Does TBA Firefly have any new products of note?

A key recent product and one we continue to develop, is fire-rated access panels. It is a good example of closing the circle to provide customer-lead solutions. While we can have the best barriers, full testing and certification and trained installers, our FR120 Access Panels have delivered that final link – almost the element that is the interface between a passive fire barrier installation and the realities of people and trades continuing to work in this environment.

What is TBA Firefly working on at the moment?

We’ve been working with damper suppliers to provide tested solutions and in particular we have been doing a huge amount of work with the NHS, working collaboratively to provide specific solutions for clients to do large fire protection upgrades with minimal disruption – which would clearly cause a problems in many healthcare settings – as well as developing some really innovative new applications for our flexible barriers in quite specific uses within the NHS estate.

These things do require a lot of development work and then of course all the fire testing – but solving ongoing challenges for very  large customers also brings its own reward. It is good to see our expertise in development, manufacture and on-site restrictions all being put to good use.

What is TBA Firefly showcasing at the Fire Safety Event? 

We always look to show both new product and new solutions at the show and this year we will be very pleased to be offering something brand new and not readily available on the market – a Fire Door system that has been tested as a system alongside our flexible fire barriers to maintain the level of protection while also offering full scale access. This is something we are confident is going to be embraced for use in large commercial roof voids with a multitude of services and repeated access required.

Do you have any words of wisdom to share with IFSJ readers?

All clients and specifiers should be relentless in demanding clarity and transparency in all areas – testing, certification, detail drawings and technical advice on site. Reputable manufacturers have a wealth of expertise to lean on, so please make use of it. Installation remains a critical piece of the jigsaw and we have trained over 1,000 installers in fitting our barriers, but the same rules apply – check they are trained in the particular product, check they are 3rd party certified and maybe which trade bodies they belong to. So for fire protection generally, be demanding, check credentials, expect evidence and don’t be hesitant to ask for it if required.

Warringtonfire marks 50 years of fire testing

This year marks 50 years of fire testing for Warringtonfire. It was in 1972 that the first commercial fire test was undertaken at a newly completed fire testing laboratory in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. 50 years later, what is believed to be the UK’s oldest existing fire resistance testing laboratory, continues to operate. Today, it is one of Warringtonfire’s main sites and is a centre of excellence for the testing of timber fire doors.

In addition to being an early pioneer in fire testing, Warringtonfire has remained at the forefront of the industry. Through its collaboration with trade associations and standards committees, including ASFP, BSI, CEN and FTSG, Warringtonfire’s team of technical experts continue to play a pivotal role in raising standards in the fire protection industry.
