FireQual modernises learner assessments with new Surpass Partnership

FireQual, the awarding organisation for the UK fire safety sector and part of the BAFE Group, has partnered with Surpass Assessment as its digital assessment provider to deliver its regulated qualifications. Following implementation in June 2026, FireQual is now delivering live examinations across the country through Surpass.

As part of BAFE Holdings, FireQual provides nationally recognised qualifications regulated by Ofqual and accredited by Qualifications Scotland, to support the professional development of individuals and organisations working across fire safety and compliance. Through its partnership with Surpass, FireQual has modernised its assessment delivery to enhance efficiency, flexibility and scalability for both learners and Approved Training Centres (ATCs).

Surpass is currently being used to deliver both in-centre examinations and online assessments through its record-and-review functionality. The platform provides FireQual with a streamlined and robust way to assess practical skills while maintaining the rigor expected of regulated qualifications. Full integration with FireQual’s Salesforce CRM also helps ensure that information moves smoothly between systems, providing greater visibility throughout the assessment process.

Fire risk assessment qualifications launched by FPA with FireQual accreditation

Fire risk assessment qualifications aligned to BS 8674

The Fire Protection Association (FPA) has been approved by FireQual to deliver fire risk assessment qualifications aligned to BS 8674:2025, with the announcement dated 21 January 2026.

The FPA said the qualifications are designed to meet the competency levels set out in BS 8674:2025.

The suite includes a Level 3 Certificate in Foundation Fire Risk Assessment and a Level 4 Certificate in Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment, with course dates available now.

It also includes a Level 5 Certificate in Advanced Fire Risk Assessment, with course dates described as coming soon.

Delivery options and supporting content

The FPA said its training will focus on the core competencies in BS 8674 and will cover interpreting fire safety plans and fire risk assessment action plans.

The training is also intended to support decisions on when specialist advice is needed, including technical input for assessing external walls using PAS 9980 guidance.

“By aligning with BS 8674:2025, we are equipping fire risk assessors with the latest best practice and technical expertise, enabling them to further demonstrate competency to Duty Holders and Responsible Persons.

“We are in the process of creating a bridging course for existing learners, helping them close knowledge gaps, gain the equivalent FireQual qualification, and progress to the higher-level qualifications offered by the FPA.”

Learners can complete the qualifications at the FPA’s Training and Education Centre in Oxfordshire, online, or on-site at client premises.

The FPA also referenced a webinar recorded in November 2025 on the BS 8674:2025 competency framework and how the new qualifications map to its levels.

FireQual launches new phase of fire safety qualifications

FireQual has announced the launch of a new and updated range of regulated fire safety qualifications.

The awarding organisation said the qualifications will be rolled out between October 2025 and January 2026.

They will be regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) and SQA Accreditation (SQAA).

According to FireQual, the new qualifications aim to support fire safety professionals seeking to advance their careers and demonstrate recognised competence.

Development led by FireQual’s Qualification Steering Group

FireQual confirmed that its Qualification Steering Group (QSG) led the redevelopment process.

The group includes sector stakeholders and Approved Training Centres.

FireQual said the redevelopment ensures the qualifications align with the latest standards and industry requirements.

It added that the process was designed to keep qualifications relevant and practical while reflecting regulatory updates.

New and updated qualifications announced

FireQual has confirmed several new and revised qualifications will be introduced as part of the rollout.

The new qualifications include the FireQual Level 2 Award for Fire Wardens and the FireQual Level 3 Award in the Servicing and Maintenance of Portable Fire Extinguishers, aligned with BAFE SP101 Scheme requirements.

Also included is the FireQual Level 3 Award in Emergency Lighting, aligned with the BAFE SP203-4 Scheme and BS 5266-1.

An updated suite of Fire Detection and Fire Alarm System qualifications will also be launched, aligned with BS 5839-1:2025 and the BAFE SP203-1 Scheme.

These will include awards covering system design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and domestic system fundamentals.

Regulated and industry-aligned learning pathways

FireQual said that each qualification is regulated by Ofqual and SQAA, providing industry recognition and credibility.

The organisation added that the qualifications provide evidence for registration with relevant BAFE Schemes.

FireQual explained that the qualifications were created with direct input from industry members through the QSG.

It said this ensures the qualifications are based on real sector needs and reflect current best practice.

FireQual stated that the rollout will begin with the FireQual Level 2 Award for Fire Wardens.

This will be followed by the FireQual Level 3 Award in Emergency Lighting and the FireQual Level 3 Award in the Servicing and Maintenance of Portable Fire Extinguishers.

The organisation confirmed that the updated Fire Detection and Fire Alarm System suite will follow later in the rollout.

FireQual said it remains committed to providing qualifications that set recognised standards for competence in fire safety.

Relevance for fire and safety professionals

The new and updated FireQual qualifications are relevant for fire risk assessors, fire alarm and emergency lighting technicians, and facilities professionals responsible for maintaining compliant systems.

The qualifications align with British Standards BS 5306, BS 5266-1 and BS 5839-1:2025, as well as BAFE SP101, SP203-1 and SP203-4 Schemes.

This ensures that holders can meet recognised benchmarks for competence and support accreditation or registration under relevant fire safety schemes.

FireQual has announced the appointment of David White and Colin Todd to its board of directors.

According to FireQual, the appointments bring over 100 years of combined experience to the organisation, with a specific focus on advancing fire safety qualifications in the United Kingdom.

David White joins with immediate effect.

FireQual announces new Qualifications Manager

FireQual, the specialist awarding organisation for the fire safety sector, has announced Darren Ellis as their new Qualifications Manager.

As reported by BAFE, Darren Ellis is a recognised expert in the regulatory and qualification development sector, with over 15 years of teaching and training experience both nationally and internationally.

Ellis’s recent work includes supporting the creation of the Military Qualifications Centre (MQC) in Abu Dhabi, providing qualifications for the United Arab Emirates Safety, Defence, and Emergency and Crisis Management (SDEC) sectors.

Prior to this, he worked with the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) as their Qualifications, Compliance, and Assessment Manager.

Extensive regulatory experience

Darren Ellis also brings significant knowledge from his nine years of work in education regulation.

He has previously worked with the English regulator Ofqual and later assisted in establishing the new Welsh regulator, Qualifications Wales.

His contributions supported the development of regulatory requirements for awarding organisations, particularly the ‘Standard Conditions of Recognition’ for both countries.

Ellis stated: “I am excited and eager to be part of FireQual and to use my expertise and experience to support their strategic aims to maintain safety within the industry.

“With a lot of change on the horizon and growth within the sector, I will continue to work with our established and much valued stakeholders to ensure FireQual’s qualifications remain fit for purpose and have real currency.”

Nic has over 14 years of experience in the training and development sector with a proven ability in quality assurance demonstrated in several roles influencing training environments within the UK. His most recent roles have been developing and implementing growth strategies as Chief Executive of SFEDI Awards, the Awarding Organisation for enterprise development. Alongside this he has also been responsible for their compliance with regulatory systems across the UK and was the Responsible Officer for their systems for learners and training centres.
