HAIX launches two products at INTERSCHUTZ 2026

HAIX has revealed its next generation of firefighting boots at INTERSCHUTZ 2026 alongside the new FIRE EAGLE 3.0.

According to HAIX, the FIRE EAGLE features the brand new ‘OneTouch’ closure system and the FIRE EAGLE 3.0 EXG.

Under the guiding theme “United by Fire”, HAIX will launch the two new product innovations at its stand at INTERSCHUTZ in Hall 15, stand H47.

The procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE) through formal tender processes is a critical step for both buyers and suppliers in the UK fire industry.

The stakes are high: having the right PPE is pertinent for firefighter safety and operational effectiveness.

With the complex and ever-changing nature of safety standards, environments and worker requirements, the tender process for firefighter PPE is often lengthy, detailed and subject to intense scrutiny.

For this reason, it’s essential for procurement officers to be well-equipped, transparent and up-to-date with regulations and market trends.

Equally, suppliers must be realistic, in-touch with procurement needs and able to provide robust evidence to support their proposed products.

Defining product requirements with precision

A successful tender begins with a clear, evidence-based understanding of operational requirements.

Firefighting in the UK encompasses a wide spectrum of scenarios, from urban high-rise incidents to rural wildfires and hazardous material responses.

This specifies the minimum requirements and test methods for the performance of three types of footwear for fire suppression, general-purpose rescue, fire rescue and hazardous materials emergencies.

In addition to specific fire boots standard, teams must be aware of the latest updates to general safety standards.

In particular, EN ISO 20345:2022, which includes new testing such as slip resistance on ceramic tiles with a soap solution as a basic requirement, ladder grip, puncture resistance and water penetration and absorption resistance.

Firefighter footwear which meets and exceeds these standards is crucial in keeping workers safe and comfortable.

For those unfamiliar, what is HAIX and what is your experience in the fire sector? 

HAIX is a global specialist footwear manufacturer with a focus on producing high quality footwear for great people doing great things.

Fire is at the heart of the brand and HAIX has a long-standing legacy within the fire sector. HAIX’s 2nd generation owner, Ewald Haimerl, was a deputy chief at the local fire station in Munich and many team members at all levels work as part-time firefighters.

Could you explain the materials or technologies that has gone into the Fire Eagle 2.0 EXG? 

The primary innovation of the Fire Eagle 2.0 EXG is the use of the EXTRAGUARD upper material.

This material is lighter than leather, quicker to dry after use in wet environments and protects against commonly used chemicals, viruses and blood.  

The three-layer EXTRAGUARD uppers are particularly robust and abrasion-resistant and absorb almost no moisture.

As a result, they stay lightweight even after extended deployments in wet environments, keeping firefighters’ feet warm and dry.

The uppers combine with the waterproof, breathable, bacteria-proof and virus-proof GORE-TEX CROSSTECH® lining inside the boot.   

The FIRE EAGLE 2.0 EXG provides members of the emergency services with reliable protection against heat and flames, complies with DIN EN15090:2012 and meets the F2A requirement.

These fire boots are easy to clean under running water and, unlike leather boots, do not require specialist care products.

The sporty fit of the FIRE EAGLE 2.0 EXG also delivers added comfort for firefighters, with no break in period.  

As part of its all-round protection, the FIRE EAGLE 2.0 EXG features a toe cap made from fibre-reinforced plastic alongside a steel puncture resistant midsole, plus a slip-resistant and heat-resistant outsole.

A pocket provides space for an RFID chip for digital PPE management. The yellow metatarsal guard has a smooth surface without any openings to ensure easy cleaning and protects the laces from damage.

How did you test the Fire Eagle 2.0 EXG to ensure it performs under real-world conditions? 

We carried out field testing with the Munich Fire Service in Germany. During this field test, 22 professional firefighters wore the new fire boots over a 12-month period in various situations, including technical assistance, firefighting deployments, storm response and rescue missions.

The results were very positive with 91% of participants saying that they would continue to wear the boots on the job. 

In the UK and wider Europe, we conducted wear trials with members of the Firefighter Challenges team to test the boot in as many difference scenarios as possible. 

What feedback have you received from users in the field, and how does that influence product design? 

Feedback has been excellent throughout the process, which indicates to the product design team that they are working in the right direction.

Further results from the Munich field test found that, in total, 73% of participants described the boots as “light”, while 9% described them as “very light”.

The fast re-drying performance was also positively reviewed: 73% rated it as “good” and 27% as “very good”. 

We are constantly using feedback to help improve our product design.

Is firefighter PPE keeping pace?

Fire risks in the UK are changing fast, driven by new technologies, lifestyle shifts and climate change.

Lithium-ion batteries and vapes, for example, have caused a sharp rise in fires, where vape-related incidents alone have increased by 348% since 2020.

These fires often burn hotter and spread faster, posing new dangers for firefighters.

At the same time, wildfires are becoming more frequent and severe, with more UK land burned this year than in any year over the past decade.

Firefighters now face a heightened dual challenge of responding to both urban and wildfire incidents.

This evolving landscape raises a crucial question: are current PPE solutions, especially footwear, keeping pace with these changing demands? And how can manufacturers ensure firefighters are properly protected?

The PPE challenges facing modern firefighters

Many of the risks and challenges for firefighters are well known.

However, firefighters also face hidden foot health risks, contending with varied terrains across urban and wildfire settings, wet floors and spillages, all creating slip hazards.

This requires well-fitting PPE footwear that have high levels of grip and stability to reduce risk of slips, trips and falls.

Another challenge for firefighter rarely taken into consideration is comfort.

Wearing heavy fire boots for extended periods can cause muscle fatigue, extreme discomfort and lead to loss of toenails and other damage to the foot.

All of which hinders performance and distracts firefighters.

It is not only the on-the-job risks that firefighters face, there are many ergonomic risks which can lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

Globally, firefighters are classified as the most vulnerable group to developing MSDs, with a 47% prevalence among this group.

Long-term health impacts, including reduced healthy working life expectancy, future healthcare costs and the economic cost of lost working days, are all hidden risks for firefighters.

Subsequently, PPE not only protects firefighters now but supports their long-term health and wellbeing

Innovating PPE: what do firefighters need?

The firefighter boot has a fascinating history, influenced by military kits and originally starting as a knee-high leather boot with the main function of keeping feet dry.

Designed to withstand harsh conditions and offer protection, these boots were heavy and unflexible.

Whilst some of these factors haven’t changed, the advancement of materials, technology and manufacturing has allowed the boot to develop and innovate in line with the firefighting profession.

Versatility has transformed the performance of fire boots.

Firefighters need boots that can adapt to various environments without switching gears.

Therefore, factors such as flexibility, durability and weight are crucial.

Wildfire firefighting highlights the need for versatile PPE.

Traditionally, firefighters used structural or Wellington boots, but neither is ideal for the comfort, flexibility and protection required for long periods across varied terrains.

New firefighting boot uses EXTRAGUARD upper and CROSSTECH lining

HAIX has announced the launch of the FIRE EAGLE 2.0 EXG, a firefighting boot featuring a new upper material designed to enhance protection and comfort.

According to HAIX, the FIRE EAGLE 2.0 EXG is the first fire boot in the world to use GORE-TEX CROSSTECH EXTRAGUARD, a multi-layer textile designed to resist moisture and chemical exposure.

The company stated that the new material helps the boots remain lightweight and dry in wet or prolonged operations, while offering additional defence against blood, viruses and commonly used chemicals.

Lightweight upper designed to improve post-deployment drying

The EXTRAGUARD upper is made from a three-layer composite and is lighter than conventional leather, according to HAIX.

The manufacturer said the new material absorbs minimal moisture and dries faster after field use.

It explained that this can support firefighter safety and hygiene, particularly in flood response or extended suppression efforts where boots typically remain wet for long periods.

Boot meets F2A fire protection standard and PPE hygiene requirements

HAIX said the FIRE EAGLE 2.0 EXG is certified to DIN EN15090:2012 and meets the F2A category for protective footwear.

The boot includes fibre-reinforced toe caps, an anti-perforation layer and a slip-resistant, heat-resistant sole.

The company added that the materials used in the boot can be cleaned under running water without the need for special care products, unlike traditional leather boots.

High visibility features and RFID compatibility included

To support equipment tracking, the FIRE EAGLE 2.0 EXG includes a pocket designed for RFID chip insertion.

HAIX reported that the boot design also incorporates a yellow instep protector, which shields the laces and allows for easy cleaning, along with reflective elements to improve visibility in low-light or smoke-filled conditions.

Firefighting boots: Adaptive footwear for modern fire challenges

HAIX explores the shift from traditional firefighting boots to advanced designs that meet the demands of both urban and wildfire scenarios in England

England isn’t typically known for its hot and dry summers unlike other parts of the world; however, the country experiences an average of 30,000 wildfires annually, which is three times the number in Greece and four times that of Canada.

Although Canadian and Greek wildfires typically burn more hectares and cause greater devastation, the persistent and growing problem of wildfires in England is undeniable.

Trends over the past decade show fluctuations, but the overall increase in wildfire incidents highlights that it is now crucial that firefighters are equipped with the appropriate wildfire footwear to enable day-to-day use as well as fight wildfires when they arise.

The growing wildfire problem

The key trend of concern to Fire and Rescue Services is the increase in both size and intensity of wildfires, this is directly linked to more typical dry air ‘wildfire weather’.

These extreme wildfire weather events are increasing in frequency and set to get worse due to climate change, which is something already showing in Europe over the last few decades.

Over the past 12 years, around 79,000 hectares of land has been burnt by wildfires in England and fire and rescue services have been increasingly burdened by wildfires.

From 2009-10 to 2020-21, there were over 360,000 wildfire incidents, burning more than 79,000 hectares of land and consuming nearly 540,000 hours of firefighting time.

Peak years such as 2011-12, had around 47,000 incidents, and the most devastating year, 2018-19, which saw over 26,000 hectares burnt, illustrates the significant impact wildfires are having.

Changing times call for changing footwear

Traditionally, firefighters have relied on a combination of wellington boots and structural boots, however, neither of these are ideal for combating wildfires.

Structural boots, designed for urban firefighting, offer excellent protection against heat and sharp objects but are often too heavy and cumbersome for the varied terrains and response times encountered during wildfires.

Wellington boots, while lighter, do not provide the necessary protection or support for prolonged and arduous wildfire conditions.

The current issued footwear fails to meet the demands of wildfire situations where firefighters cover long distances and endure extended hours.

This leads to severe discomfort, blisters, and more painful outcomes like the loss of toenails, compromising the effectiveness and safety of firefighters during life-saving wildfire operations.

Firefighters need to be issued footwear that is comfortable for both tasks, structural firefighting for short duration use and long-use wildfire incidents.

There are boots on the market that do both.

Keeping ahead of the problem

Specialist wildfire designed PPE is becoming a necessity to protect the health of firefighters.

The traditional approach to firefighting footwear is no longer sufficient and firefighters should now be equipped with structural boots as well as more lightweight boots that provide added comfort and protection for extended use, or ideally a boot that does both.

With climate change creating more unpredictable and extreme wildfire conditions, the versatility of the footwear and other equipment worn by firefighters is key.

As new material develops, firefighting boots will become lighter and more flexible without sacrificing protection and comfort, making them ideal for wildfire use.

The challenge with structural boots is that they’re designed to be worn for shorter periods of time, meaning in wildfire situations they become increasingly uncomfortable.

However, A boot such as the HAIX Fire Eagle 2.0 is a fully certified structural fire boot that works perfectly as a wildfire boot and technical rescue boot as it’s flexible and lighter than other options on the market while still providing the protection of a structural boot.

This makes the boot more forgiving on the feet for longer duration use and limits the risk of blistering and other injuries.

Feedback and continuous innovation

One of those wildfire experts is Andy Elliott, Director of Wildfire Training and Consultancy Ltd.

Who has been an operational firefighter for more than 40 years. Andy has worked on prescribed fires and wildfires on four continents.

From Concept to Finished Firefighter Boots

As with every HAIX® boot, the development of a firefighter boot requires real teamwork: a collaboration between artisan shoemakers, design experts and quality specialists in an intensive exchange across departments.

And the shoe can only meet HAIX®’s high standards when these work meticulously with the production, sales and marketing departments as well.

Whether they’re in Europe, Northern or South America, Asia or Australia – HAIX® boots are  exposed to extreme situations every day. Inspiration therefore also comes from the wearers themselves, as their feedback flows into development via sales and marketing. 

Firefighter boots: From specification to series production

A so-called ‘requirements specification’ defines what area the new development should be for, what the boot has to be able to do, which technical requirements have to be fulfilled, and much more.

The concept for the boot builds on this before ultimately being given an appealing design.

At first, the developers start with simple hand drawings. This is then used to create a prototype – often initially only of individual parts such as the sole.

The first prototypes are usually a mixture of literal shoemaking and computer-designed parts.

They are put through their paces to see if all requirements are met, and improvements are made on an ongoing basis.

After final approval, the first samples are produced, and then the final production of a new firefighter boot begins.

Highest requirements for hero boots

The DIN standard for firefighter boots places high demands on every component. The goal at HAIX® is always to exceed these.

Every component on a firefighter boot must survive ten seconds of flame treatment without damage or burning.

HAIX® continuously tests materials in its own laboratory during the development phase.

In the so-called ‘sand bath test’, the protective insulation inside the shoe is tested.

A real endurance test: firefighter boots must be able to withstand 250°C for 40 minutes without the sole deforming, and after ten minutes the temperature inside the boot must not exceed 42°C.

In an emergency, firefighters can usually be inside for up to 30 minutes until their breathing apparatus runs out of air.

The standard differs in some instances for overseas use. 

When it comes to design, HAIX® follows the philosophy of ‘nothing without function’ – which means every detail not only sets high standards visually, but also has a purpose.

The additional yellow elements on the firefighter boots, for example, make fellow crew members more visible in smoky buildings.
