Meiko expands Interschutz showcase with workshop and mobile cleaning units

Meiko to show SCBA and PPE systems

Meiko will present new cleaning and disinfection systems for self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and other personal protective equipment at Interschutz from 1 to 6 June 2026.

The company’s presence will span three exhibition areas, including stand L21 in hall 14, the open-air area between halls 11 and 12 and the outdoor venue for the FireFit European Championships between halls 7 and 9.

Stand L21 in hall 14 will include a new prototype machine for cleaning respiratory protective equipment in a footprint of less than one square metre.

The machine is intended for smaller fire services with lower throughput.

Meiko will also present new features for its TopClean range.

Its TopClean D PPE decontamination machine uses a reversing wash system to remove combustion residue from SCBA sets, and an optional brush has been added for a more thorough clean.

A prototype wastewater filter system will also be shown, designed to capture contaminants before they reach the sewerage network.

The company’s display will also show the workflow from the dirty side to the clean side of an SCBA workshop through planning examples for fire service and industrial settings.

Meiko to demonstrate mobile workshop

Meiko stated that its open-air display between halls 11 and 12 will feature a mobile SCBA workshop developed with vehicle manufacturer Mosolf.

The trailer is designed for extended incidents such as wildfires.

It is divided into a dirty side and a clean side to reduce cross-contamination.

The unit includes facilities for cleaning, disinfection, drying and testing of respiratory protective equipment.

Live demonstrations will allow visitors to watch the process and take part in individual stages.

Meiko equipment to support FireFit operations

Meiko said a transport vehicle fitted with its equipment will be used to service SCBA sets supplied to competitors at the FireFit European Championships during the fair.

The championships will take place at Interschutz, with firefighters from around the world competing in individual and team events across the event.

FireFit Europe uses the vehicle as a plug-and-play mobile SCBA workshop for around ten events each year in several countries.

The unit is designed for rapid deployment and allows equipment to be cleaned in a sheltered environment in different weather conditions.

A screen near the competition area will show real-time footage of PPE being cleaned and prepared inside the vehicle.

Visitors will also be able to enter the vehicle in small groups during breaks between events and inspect the equipment.

Appointments for meetings at the event can be booked in advance through Meiko’s Interschutz page.

Maintaining seal performance: MEIKO UK tackles BA contamination

Firefighters rely on breathing apparatus masks and personal protective equipment that must perform consistently in hostile environments.

During incidents and training, this equipment is exposed to soot, fine particulates and biological contaminants that can remain embedded if cleaning is poorly controlled.

For BA masks and regulators, residue can affect the seal, compromise performance or expose the next wearer to harmful substances.

Amid growing awareness of occupational health risks and cancer exposure, many fire and rescue services have moved away from manual, sink-based cleaning towards automated, repeatable processes in dedicated workshops.

MEIKO UK Managing Director Paul Anderson sat down with IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey to explain how the company’s TopClean washer-disinfector systems work, the problems they are designed to solve and how controlled cleaning processes are reshaping BA mask and PPE hygiene in the fire service.

What risks do fire services face when BA masks and PPE are not cleaned using a controlled and repeatable process?

Over recent years, fire services have placed much greater emphasis on firefighter health.

It is now widely recognised that fires expose equipment to carcinogens that can adhere to clothing and breathing apparatus masks and then be inhaled by the next wearer.

In some cases, the person cleaning the equipment may also be exposed.

Protecting firefighters therefore has to be central to how PPE is managed.

Traditionally, many services relied on a three-sink method, where equipment is dipped sequentially through separate sinks.

That approach leaves significant room for variation, relies heavily on individual practice and typically involves large volumes of chemicals, leading to inconsistent results.

With an automated process, cleaning is built around defined parameters such as time, temperature, mechanical action and chemistry.

When those elements are balanced correctly, the result is a controlled and repeatable method of cleaning every time, reducing water and chemical use while providing a consistent outcome for BA masks and other PPE.

From a technical perspective, what makes BA masks and regulators more challenging to clean than general PPE?

Cleaning PPE is very different from cleaning items like glassware or plates.

PPE goes straight back onto the human body and sits in close contact with the skin, so there has to be confidence that contaminants are fully removed.

With BA masks, cleaning the outside alone is not enough.

The inside of the mask also has to be cleaned thoroughly.

After a fire, particulates drawn into the mask can remain detectable by smell and those residues can carry bacteria and other contaminants that should not be inhaled.

The process therefore has to address both internal and external surfaces using appropriate temperatures and, where required, specific levels of disinfection.

This approach is well established in healthcare settings, where defined contact times during the final rinse are used alongside temperature and chemistry to remove viruses.

The aim is to clean a mask to a standard where it can be safely worn by one firefighter and then issued to another immediately afterwards.

Other items such as helmets, gloves and boots present fewer challenges because they are not part of the breathing system.

Masks are more demanding, and regulators and breathing components must also be protected during cleaning.

This is achieved using controlled air connections that prevent water from entering sensitive areas, allowing a fully automated process that protects the equipment while delivering a high standard of hygiene.

How do washer-disinfectors improve consistency and limit exposure compared with manual cleaning?

The cleaning process is built around what is commonly referred to as Sinner’s circle, which brings together time, temperature, mechanical action and chemistry.

In manual cleaning, those elements are applied inconsistently and are heavily influenced by the individual carrying out the task.

With an automated system, all parameters are controlled.

In a manual sink-based process, half a litre to a litre of detergent per sink is common.

In an automated washer-disinfector, chemical use is typically around seven millilitres per litre of water, and even less during the final rinse.

That level of control directly affects exposure, energy use and resource consumption.

The system uses less chemical, less water and less energy overall, which means less contaminated water entering the drainage system and a more contained process for the operator.

Throughput is also significantly higher.

Up to 40 BA masks can be cleaned per hour, with larger systems such as the TopClean D increasing capacity further, while cleaning performance remains consistent internally and externally and is supported by validated process data.

Why pressurise regulators during cleaning and what practical benefits does it deliver?

The TopClean M is designed to clean both the inside and outside of the BA mask while allowing regulators to be cleaned as part of the same process.

A regulator controls the flow of air from the cylinder to the wearer and certain internal areas cannot be exposed directly to water.

To address this, the system uses a low-pressure compressed air connection during the wash cycle.

This maintains internal air pressure within the regulator, preventing water from entering sensitive components.

The regulator is cleaned externally while its internal parts remain protected, delivering effective cleaning alongside protection of critical breathing components within a single controlled process.

How do clamping and racking features reduce cross-contamination inside larger systems?

The TopClean D is a larger system that many fire services now use as a single solution where space is limited.

It can clean masks, cylinders, backpacks, complete apparatus, gloves, boots and helmets within one controlled cycle.

It operates quickly while using less water and fewer chemicals and can incorporate heat recovery so energy from the process is reused to preheat incoming water.

Cross-contamination is prevented through controlled separation within the machine, with contaminants removed through filtration and discharged safely so items are not re-exposed during the cycle.

How are cycles and detergents set to remove contaminants without damaging seals, visors or valves?

Cleaning programmes are developed within the temperature ranges and parameters approved by mask and equipment manufacturers, supported by the relevant certifications.

Materials such as silicone and rubber need careful handling, as prolonged exposure to excessive heat can lead to gradual degradation and shorten service life.

To avoid that, temperatures, detergents and cycle times are matched to the materials being cleaned and checked in partnership with manufacturers.

This ensures contaminants are removed effectively while the integrity of seals, visors and valves is maintained.

What changes when services adopt automated cleaning and how might hygiene expectations evolve?

Moving from a manual process such as a three-sink system to an automated one is a significant change.

Initial reactions are often positive, as teams no longer need to clean equipment by hand, but structured training remains essential.

Teams are taken through the process from start to finish, supported by clear visual guidance displayed in the workshop.

The operation itself is kept simple, with most machines running on three main cycles: short, medium and long.

Heavily contaminated equipment requires a longer cycle, while routine post-training cleaning can be completed more quickly.

Training covers how to run the machine and how to maintain it, with elements such as colour-coding used to identify parts handled and cleaned daily.

Looking ahead, how do you see expectations around PPE and BA hygiene evolving?

Over the last two to three years, expectations around PPE hygiene have shifted quickly, influenced in part by developments in the United States, where contamination and cancer exposure among firefighters have been more openly discussed.

Cost will always shape decision-making.

Services still have to balance capital investment with ongoing spend on water, power and chemicals.

Systems that reduce resource use while delivering reliable decontamination allow services to improve protection for crews while making realistic choices about where money is spent over the life of the equipment.

Clean habits, clear minds: Keeping firefighters safe with operational hygiene and contamination control

Dr. Andreas Häcker, chief medical officer at Baden-Württemberg state fire service, discusses operational hygiene and contamination control to keep firefighters safe

Dr. Andreas Häcker is chief medical officer for the Baden-Württemberg state fire service, a position he has held since 2016.

In this interview with ware-washing and disinfection specialist MEIKO, he offers insights into operational hygiene, the risk of spreading contamination ‒ and the most effective ways to keep firefighters safe.

Häcker has worked full-time as a specialist in internal and emergency medicine since 1988.

In addition to his day job, he heads up emergency medical services at Stuttgart Regional Council.

He also spent 20 years working as the senior emergency physician for the districts of Böblingen und Ludwigsburg.

He has held the role of group commander in the Ditzingen fire department since 2006.

What are your duties as chief medical officer for the state fire service?

I work on a voluntary basis for the state fire service association, an advisory body that supports the state government, local authorities and state fire departments.

It includes various disciplines, each of which covers different areas of expertise.

My job is to head up the specialist field of rescue services and health.

The position I hold requires a medical qualification, and ideally an additional qualification or experience in emergency medicine.

You also need to be an active member of a fire department, because first-hand experience is essential.

My main task is to advise the association and liaise with the president or the state’s chief fire officer.

I give presentations on medical topics related to the fire service at events and at fire departments.

How has your dual role as a specialist in internal medicine and a firefighter influenced your views on operational hygiene?

Yes, not just professionally, but also through personal experience.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer when I was 49.

Cancer wasn’t something we had seen in our family before, so it seemed likely that it was linked to my work at the fire service.

I have been a firefighter since 1979, so at the time of my diagnosis I had already spent three decades coming into contact with chemical contaminants at numerous fire scenes.

Back then, people didn’t really talk about operational hygiene.

The situation was very different in the medical arena, where hygiene had long been recognised as a key issue and a top priority for operating theatres.

That stretches back to the mid-19th century, when Semmelweis argued that doctors should wash their hands before attending a birth, because he saw that it led to lower maternal mortality rates.

He wasn’t taken seriously during his lifetime, and he eventually ended up in an asylum.

Much later, when scientists finally obtained proof that handwashing eliminates bacteria, Semmelweis was posthumously vindicated.

I see parallels between the “biological” contamination described by Semmelweis and the toxicological and chemical contamination that occurs at a fire scene.

Handwashing and decontamination are now second nature to firefighters in their 20s or 30s.

Firefighters over 50 accept those things as part of the job, but they tend to be less convinced of their importance.

It’s hard to change people’s behaviour when it’s so deeply rooted!

How did the IARC’s classification of firefighting as carcinogenic change perceptions in Germany?

Accident insurance companies had made that connection even before the IARC classification came into effect.

In fact, insurers had already set out some initial guidelines for hygiene in firefighting operations.

The IARC considers two types of cancer to be significantly carcinogenic and five to be probably carcinogenic in connection with firefighting.

The most likely explanation for this phenomenon is exposure to the many different carcinogens found in soot and fire smoke.

These findings are a call to action for firefighters and all those responsible for this issue – they remind us how important it is to provide the best possible protection against exposure to contaminants.

But it’s equally important not to be too alarmist.

Some 98 percent of firefighters are people who volunteer in their free time, and it would be disastrous if they were to suddenly believe this activity will inevitably give them cancer.

It is the job of professional associations and politicians to raise awareness of this issue and to come up with practical solutions.

We need to clearly explain how exposure to harmful contaminants, soot and fire smoke occurs and help people take the necessary steps to stay safe.

The key is not to scaremonger, but to provide information and advice.

Since 2018, my local fire service has had a formal policy in place which is followed by everyone who works there.

Whenever I mention this in my presentations, I notice how readily and enthusiastically this is accepted by younger firefighters – in stark contrast, unfortunately, to many of their older colleagues.

What is the current awareness among German firefighters about their elevated cancer risks?

I know a few people who work as paid firefighters, and I get the impression that they are more reluctant to accept these findings.

In Stuttgart, for example, they might attend ten incidents a day and tackle four fires.

That means changing their gear four times, and many of them think, well, it doesn’t make any sense if I’m going to be tackling another fire ten minutes from now.

It’s a pain to have to shower each time and put on clean clothes, which is why professional firefighters find it more of a hassle to stick to the hygiene rules.

Of course, the cumulative risk in a professional fire department is greater than that in a volunteer service, because firefighters are exposed more frequently to soot, smoke and other fire residues, which makes the spread of these contaminants more likely.

I once did an experiment by wiping a damp cloth over the sun visor inside one of our relatively new turntable ladder vehicles.

When I looked at the cloth, I saw that it was absolutely filthy.

You might not see any smoke inside the vehicle at a fire scene, but the smell of burning is always there, and the contaminants are deposited in the cab as a thin, greasy brown coating.

And you get those toxic coatings on every handle in the truck – not just on the windscreen sun visor.

There’s a useful booklet published by the DGUV – the German Social Accident Insurance Association – entitled “Hygiene und Kontaminationsvermeidung bei der Feuerwehr”.

It offers tips on preventing contamination and maintaining hygiene during firefighting operations.

Appendix 3 of that publication contains my list of recommendations on what to take into account before, during and after a firefighting operation.

There is usually an initial trigger for cancer development, and it’s particularly likely to involve contamination with asbestos-containing substances.

But you also get a gradual accumulation of toxic substances inside the body.

Over the years, those harmful products build up inside the body until a switch finally flips and the system collapses.

According to the WHO study, this phenomenon is evident not only among members of the professional fire service, but also in all emergency personnel involved in firefighting.

The key is to use common sense and not to try and do everything absolutely perfectly.

If we can remove 80–90 percent of the contaminants and reduce exposure to an acceptable minimum, then that’s already a big improvement.

The point is to minimise exposure to harmful contaminants – because preventing exposure altogether is both unrealistic and unnecessary.

It’s also about raising awareness.

Most of the hazardous substances to which firefighters are exposed enter the body not through the respiratory tract, but through the skin.

Even if you’re wearing PPE at a fire scene, there is still a very real risk, particularly for your head, neck, hands and genital area.

These are the parts of your body where your skin is most vulnerable.

Protective clothing can repel heat, but not harmful contaminants.

That’s why firefighters need to proactively seek out additional ways to protect themselves.

A new skin cleaning product can help in that task: pak-ex works on the principle of adsorption, using a special mineral to bind hazardous substances before they can penetrate the natural skin barrier.

This product enables users to gently remove 95 per cent of the harmful substances that adhere to the skin, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and soot.

That’s exactly what firefighters need, especially when they have just returned from tackling a fire.

He is a fire chief and a member of the fire service technical centre (FTZ) in the district of Leipzig.

Niklaus Lerch, duty group manager of the company fire service, lobbied for the switch to the MEIKO solution.

He noted that while it currently took 42 minutes to clean four masks and another 45 minutes to dry them, the new TopClean M machine would clean them in just six minutes and dry them significantly faster than before.

Cost-effective solution

Hilpoltstein Fire Service is a great example of how MEIKO solutions can be faster, healthier and more affordable.

The soak tanks the team previously used for manual chemical mask-cleaning were replaced by a reliable mechanical process in the TopClean M.

This eliminated the need for the expensive extraction system that the fire service would otherwise have had to install to remove hazardous fumes.

“It actually worked out cheaper for the municipality,” says Matthias Massopust, RPE technician for the Hilpoltstein Fire Service.

Every fire service has its own unique tasks and challenges.

These should be reflected in the configuration of each fire service’s respiratory protective equipment (RPE) workshops, cleaning centres and hygiene hubs.

That’s the only way to guarantee rapid, reliable and hygienic results when space is tight – for everyone who wears BA masks, and everyone who deals with them afterwards.

What can you squeeze into six minutes?

That is not something Karlheinz Fimeyer has to worry about any longer when he is working in Kehl Fire Department’s BA mask cleaning room. Using the TopClean M to clean BA masks and regulators means that the BA equipment manager no longer has to search for something else to do at the same time.

That is because the shortest cycle of the washer-disinfector takes just six minutes. Previously he had to wait 45 minutes until everything was clean – but of course that was when the BA masks were still being cleaned in a conventional dishwasher.

“Kehl’s BA equipment maintenance team played an important role in developing the new Meiko TopClean M mask washing machine,” says MEIKO. “We worked with them to perfect the basket in which the masks are arranged for cleaning.

“Our development department designed special containers for the small mask components and we worked very closely with Karlheinz Fimeyer and his colleagues to find the best solution for cleaning regulators in the same machine, while keeping them at eight bar pressure during cleaning.”

Fimeyer enthuses about a quantum leap in mask cleaning: “Instead of having to leave the machine running while I find something else to do, I can now simply get everything done in one go.”

Stuttgart Airport Fire Service

Airport fire service takes occupational health and safety seriously when it comes to mask cleaning.

Stuttgart airport is the largest in BadenWürttemberg, and its fire department employs 81 people, all of whom are trained in the use of specialist breathing gear. The fire service has a stock of 140 breathing apparatus (BA) masks, and when Kevin Vogel and his colleagues pull them on they instinctively trust that everything is properly sealed, their compressed air cylinders are full, and there are no herpes or tuberculosis viruses – or indeed any other microorganisms – lurking in their masks.

Recently the three BA equipment managers have been cleaning the SCBA gear in a TopClean M from MEIKO.

The previous manual cleaning method with a formaldehyde solution had prompted numerous complaints to the airport fire chief because the BA equipment managers occasionally experienced unpleasant skin or respiratory complaints.

“Our in-house system for monitoring hazardous substances has been tightened up, so without the TopClean M I would have needed to go through the process of getting the cleaning chemicals approved for safety,” Rudlof tells. The TopClean M washer-disinfector has made that process unnecessary – and the new cleaning and disinfection machine is also saving the BA technicians a considerable amount of time.

“We clean the masks from a total of 40 fire services, though only after their training drills. Whenever a big training exercise takes place on-site at the airport, we typically have to clean 100 masks in one go,” says Rudlof.

The rapid and reliable cleaning cycles of the MEIKO TopClean M washer-disinfector make it an invaluable member of the BA cleaning and maintenance team. And if ever something goes wrong, the local MEIKO dealer is just 5 kilometres down the road and responds almost as fast as the fire service. Shift leader Moser neatly sums up the firefighters’ expectations: “Our needs are pretty simple. All we ask for is top-quality equipment.”

Fire Department Idar-Oberstein

Working in the fire service is often about acting fast and relying on instinct – but there are some jobs which take time and careful planning. Jörg Riemer, Fire Chief of the Idar-Oberstein Volunteer Fire Department, Udo Schuff, head of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipment, and Klaus Schneider are all fully trained BA equipment managers. They manage the equipment used by the 150 active firefighters deployed in this town in the Hunsrück region of Germany.

Famous as a gemstone centre, Idar-Oberstein’s fire service may be run on a volunteer basis, but these three men are municipal employees. They work full-time to ensure that all the firefighters’ gear works perfectly in the event of an emergency – including the personal protective equipment (PPE) that all their colleagues rely on.

Udo Schuff and his colleagues, who are all in their 50s, tried putting the individual mask components in a cloth bag and washing them in the washing machine they use for the firefighters’ duty gear.

“But unfortunately it didn’t work well enough so we had to finish off the cleaning by hand,” Schuff says. “We’re grateful to the city council for approving the purchase of a TopClean M in their budget. We’ve been using the machine to clean our 250 masks and regulators since September 2014,” Schuff says enthusiastically. Schuff’s colleague Jörg Riemer emphasises that one of the biggest advantages of the new solution is that “none of our full-time or volunteer equipment managers come into contact with detergents or disinfectants anymore”.

This is a key point, especially for Udo Schuff. He suffers from a chronic lung disease which means he is no longer able to wear breathing apparatus sets. His colleague Klaus Schneider is equally pleased with the decision they made: “The machine is exceptionally easy to use and actually produces better results than manual cleaning.”

IFSJ Exclusive: Machine vs manual BA mask cleaning with MEIKO

TopClean M from MEIKO is designed to make the BA mask cleaning process fast, cheap and hygienic

Working by hand is not to be underestimated – but it is not the best option for cleaning BA masks or regulators. In response to the length of time it takes to effectively clean this vital piece of firefighter personal protective equipment (PPE), MEIKO has developed TopClean M: a cleaning solution that is designed to be fast, hygienic and cost effective.

The problem

When on duty, firefighters must rely completely on their colleagues and their equipment. In Germany they refer to this as the “safety chain”. The safety chain combines all actions, methods, tactics, equipment and appliances associated with the safe use of respiratory protection and, in extreme cases, makes it possible to safely rescue the wearer of respiratory protection equipment by means of respiratory protection emergency rescue.

The safety chain includes all safety philosophy associated with respiratory protection during preparation for deployment, deployment itself and post-processing. Breaking the safety chain can put the life of the person wearing respiratory protection equipment at risk.

The post-processing referred to includes the cleaning of respiratory protective equipment. In the same way that certain hazardous situations can only be combatted by following certain processes. These valid processes are a great help when cleaning PPE.

Valid processes are not guaranteed in manual cleaning. Like many processes that are carried out by hand, manual cleaning is prone to error: incorrect dosing of the chemicals used, insufficient wetting of products, not enough application time – or too much application time, if you get distracted by another task in the middle of manual cleaning.

This is exactly what happened at one fire service. The results: the BA masks were left in the cleaning bath much longer than they should have been. The softener in the rubber parts of the mask dissolved, causing black marks on the firefighters’ faces the next time they used them.

The solution

To ensure that firefighter masks remain robust and are not damaged during the cleaning process, MEIKO developed the TopClean M: a modular system for cleaning of respirators, full-face masks, regulators and SCBA frames.

Unlike with manual cleaning, damage to BA masks like this will not happen with the TopClean M as all the parameters associated with the cleaning process (time, chemicals, mechanics, temperature) are predefined and run reliably.

The integrated door locking ensures that the processes cannot be interrupted once the start button has been pressed.

And a built-in empty indicator ensures that cleaning cannot commence without sufficient chemicals. According to the expert opinion of Professor Walter Popp, Head of Hospital Hygiene at Essen University Hospital, following intensive testing, he said that: “TopClean M delivers good cleaning and disinfection performance. (…) As a general rule it is preferable to use a machine rather than manual methods to clean BA masks.”

User safety

If manual cleaning is not carried out under the correct conditions, users can be put at an even greater disadvantage: cleaning vapours can be inhaled, chemicals can damage the skin and contaminated PPE can even harm those it is designed to protect. By contrast, machine cleaning is completed in a closed system, i.e. inside the TopClean M. What this means above all, is more safety and security for users, as they do not come into direct contact with the cleaning chemicals.

Saving time

Another disadvantage of manual disinfection is that it takes up the valuable capacities of respiratory protective equipment technicians – in particular when they are charged with removing all traces of chemicals from the equipment they are tasked with cleaning.

If it takes an average of 4.5 hours to complete the cleaning and disinfection process manually for 4 BA masks, using TopClean can reduce this time by 60%. All the technician has to do, is to take the BA masks apart, place them into the baskets and subsequently put them back together and carry out standard checks. TopClean M does the rest, with programme cycle times of between 6 and 10 minutes.

Using the TopClean M, up to four BA masks can be cleaned and disinfected simultaneously in next to no time, or eight regulators, or four BA masks and four regulators simultaneously.

Thomas Happersberger, Commander of Lahr City Fire Service, said that the MEIKO solution was an improvement on their previous methods: “Our previous manual process was reliable, of course. But the TopClean M and machine cleaning takes things to a whole new level, by giving us a much more consistent and reliable process.”

Olaf Fernys, who together with a colleague, is responsible for cleaning 892 BA masks and 661 regulators at Leipzig’s fire rescue headquarters, summarises all of these arguments quite simply: “It is not just about saving time; the improvement in safety and hygiene delivered by the TopClean M from MEIKO is more important.”

Machine cleaning in the TopClean M also means more safety and security for respiratory protective equipment technicians, because the cleaning and disinfection process delivered by the machine is approved by leading BA mask manufacturers.
