Can you tell us about your background, how you joined Streamlight and your focus in this role?

I’m an Industrial Engineer with an MBA from the Instituto de Empresa in Spain and I’ve been working in the personal safety industry for more than two decades.

I started my journey at SCOTT SAFETY back in 2006, where I managed various European territories and eventually led the entire regional operation.

When 3M acquired SCOTT SAFETY in 2017, I stayed on and held several leadership roles there until mid-2024.

Joining Streamlight was an exciting next step for me.

The company has an exceptional reputation for quality and innovation, especially in high stakes environments like firefighting.

My focus here is to strengthen our distributor network across Europe and, more importantly, to build stronger connections with end users.

Understanding their real-world challenges helps us create lighting tools that are genuinely fit for purpose.

How important are lighting tools, like those from Streamlight, in modern firefighting?

Lighting tools are vital.

Firefighters often work in low visibility, life threatening conditions.

They are human beings, not superheroes and they rely heavily on their sense of sight to navigate, assess risks and perform rescues safely.

Streamlight designs its products entirely around the user.

Our lighting tools enhance situational awareness, improve visibility and are often the first line of defence in a dark or smoke-filled environment.

From battling structural fires to executing search and rescue missions, these tools are not just helpful, they’re lifesaving.

Crucially, our lights are built to meet stringent global safety standards.

That includes certification for use in explosive atmospheres, where a non-compliant device could have catastrophic consequences.

Firefighters need absolute trust in their equipment and that is something Streamlight delivers.

How have firefighter expectations changed when it comes to equipment, especially lighting gear?

There has been a significant shift in expectations.

Firefighters now expect more compact, lighter and brighter tools, without sacrificing performance.

They’re operating in tighter, more vertical spaces and speed is essential.

You cannot afford to wrestle with bulky or awkward equipment in a critical moment.

Battery life is a huge focus too.

Our users need lights that can go the distance, meaning long missions, fast recharge times and reliability in extreme conditions.

That is why we work closely with frontline teams when developing new products.

Their feedback directly shapes the design and functionality of our tools.

From LED technology, beam clarity, waterproofing, to heat resistance; every component is selected with real world performance in mind.

We’re not just creating lights; we’re crafting survival tools.

What features are now essential in professional firefighting lights?

Durability and safety are always at the top of the list, but we are also seeing more demand for intelligent functionality.

High candela output, for example, allows beams to penetrate smoke and fog more effectively.

But if the beam is too harsh or unfocused, it can disorient rather than help.

We focus on tight beam profiles and peripheral illumination to balance clarity with safety.

Battery performance is another vital area.

Many of our products offer dual power source options, such as rechargeable and alkaline batteries, so firefighters are never caught off guard.

Integrated battery status indicators monitor power levels in real time.

Hands free usability is key.

Whether it is a helmet mounted lights or right-angle torches clipped to turnout gear, firefighters need their hands free.

Tools like our Survivor® X ATEX are designed for seamless integration with PPE, without interfering with movement or accessibility.

Is there a product that really reflects what makes Streamlight’s approach special?

The Survivor® X ATEX really exemplifies Streamlight’s mission.

Streamlight introduces multi-fuel tactical weapon lights for handguns

New tactical lighting options for firearms

Streamlight has launched new multi-fuel models in its TLR-8 series of laser-equipped tactical weapon lights.

The new models include the TLR-8 X with a red laser, the TLR-8 X G with a green laser, the TLR-8 X sub with a red laser, and the TLR-8 X G sub with a green laser.

These lights are designed for full-size, compact, and select subcompact handguns from manufacturers including GLOCK, SIG SAUER, and Springfield Armory.

The models offer the option of using either a CR123A lithium battery or Streamlight’s SL-B9 USB-C rechargeable battery pack.

Streamlight President and CEO Ray Sharrah said: “These new lights, like their originals, are designed to maximize shooters’ weapon platforms in a variety of home defense and tactical applications.”

Performance and features

The new TLR-8 X models produce 500 lumens and feature a high-power white LED with 5,000 candela output and a beam range of 141 metres.

They offer three lighting modes: LED Only, LED/Laser Combined, and Laser Only.

When using a CR123A battery, the run time is 1.5 hours for LED and LED/Laser mode, and 60 hours for Laser Only mode.

With the SL-B9 battery pack, the LED and LED/Laser modes run for one hour, and the Laser Only mode runs for 36 hours.

Each light has a customizable rear switch that allows ambidextrous operation and features a snap-on and tighten interface to enable mounting without placing hands near the muzzle.

Laser options and compatibility

The TLR-8 X and TLR-8 X sub models include a 640-660nm red aiming laser, while the TLR-8 X G and TLR-8 X G sub versions use a 510-530nm green aiming laser, which appears brighter to the human eye.

These models are designed to fit a variety of handguns, including the GLOCK 43X MOS, GLOCK 48 MOS, SIG SAUER P365 and P365 XL, Springfield Armory Hellcat, and multiple 1913 short-railed subcompact handguns.

Construction and durability

The new models are built from 6000 Series machined aircraft aluminium with a black anodized finish and have an IPX4 rating for water resistance.

The BOROFLOAT impact-resistant lens is designed to withstand heavy use.

The TLR-8 X and TLR-8 X G weigh 74.8 grams with a CR123A battery and 77.6 grams with the SL-B9 battery pack.

The TLR-8 X sub and TLR-8 X G sub weigh 78.5 grams with a disposable battery and 81.3 grams with the SL-B9 pack.

Streamlight names Michael F. Dineen as new President

Michael F. Dineen takes on new leadership role

Streamlight has announced the promotion of Michael F. Dineen to the position of president.

He previously served as chief revenue officer and succeeds Raymond L. Sharrah, who will continue as chief executive officer, providing overall corporate oversight.

Dineen joined Streamlight in 2009 as vice president of sales and marketing, managing the company’s sales efforts across multiple sectors, including law enforcement, sporting goods, industrial, military, federal government, automotive, and fire/EMS.

In 2022, he was appointed chief revenue officer, taking on additional responsibilities in materials and operations.

Dineen’s background and industry experience

Before joining Streamlight, Dineen spent 17 years at MSA Safety, where he held various sales leadership roles.

His responsibilities included managing sales teams and contributing to product development and marketing strategies for public safety, military, and industrial markets.

At MSA Safety, he served as director of sales for North American first responder markets and was previously northern North America sales manager for the fire service market.

His experience in these sectors aligns with key areas of Streamlight’s business.

Expanded responsibilities as president

In his new role, Dineen will continue overseeing sales and marketing while also taking on leadership of product management, accounting and finance, and IT operations.

His responsibilities will include strategic planning and corporate leadership across these areas.

Sharrah stated: “Mike’s deep understanding of our business, combined with his forward-thinking approach to leadership, makes him the ideal candidate to lead Streamlight into its next phase of growth.”

Education and professional qualifications

Dineen holds a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems from Saint Joseph’s University and an MBA with a focus in marketing from Seton Hall University.

2007 H.I.D. LiteBox®

The H.I.D. LiteBox® was a portable, high-intensity search light, offering an impressive 1,000,000 candela peak beam intensity and 3,350 lumens of brightness.

This searchlight provided exceptional intensity and peripheral illumination, making it capable of lighting entire scenes in emergency or rescue operations.

2008 Fire Vulcan® LED

The original Fire Vulcan® was upgraded with LED technology.

The super-bright LED beam provided exceptional visibility over long distances, while the two blue taillights ensured visibility in thick smoke.

An ATEX model was also available, further extending its usability in hazardous environments.

2010 E-Flood® LiteBox® / E-Flood® FireBox®

The E-Flood® LiteBox® and FireBox® produced high-lumen  beams with a flood pattern.

This feature was perfect for situations where a focused, intense beam was needed to pinpoint specific areas in low-light conditions.

2013 E-Flood® LiteBox® HL

The E-Flood® LiteBox® HL featured selectable diffuser settings, offering users the flexibility to choose between two beam pattern widths based on their needs.

This added versatility made the lantern suitable for both broad floodlighting and more focused illumination tasks.

2017 Vulcan® 180

The Vulcan® 180 was recognised as the lightest safety-rated portable lantern of its kind,.

Its 180° tilting head, paired with three white LEDs, provided extreme brightness, while two ultra-bright blue taillights ensured visibility in thick smoke.

2020 Vulcan® 180 HAZ-LO®

The Vulcan® 180 HAZ-LO® is a Class 1 Division 1 safety-rated multi-function rechargeable lantern, developed for use in hazardous locations.

Its three white LEDs provide extreme brightness, and two blue taillights ensure visibility in smoke-filled environments.

With its lightweight and rechargeable design, it is ideal for portable scene lighting.

An ATEX model was introduced later in 2020.

2023 Vulcan Clutch®

The Vulcan Clutch® introduced a unique clamping handle for hands-free use, allowing users to secure the lantern in place during operations.

The head of the lantern can fully articulate 340°, providing precise targeting of light where it’s needed most.

2024 E-Spot® LiteBox® / E-Spot® FireBox®

The E-Spot® LiteBox® and FireBox® were redesigned to be both brighter and lighter, improving the usability and efficiency of these high-performance lanterns.

This redesign ensured a better lighting experience while maintaining portability and durability.

2024 E-Flood® LiteBox® / E-Flood® FireBox®

Like the E-Spot® models, the E-Flood® LiteBox® and FireBox® were also redesigned to be brighter and lighter.

These enhancements made the lanterns more practical for users who needed both high-performance illumination and a more lightweight, manageable form factor.

Streamlight launches Stinger 2020 S: a 2,000-lumen rechargeable work light

Streamlight has introduced the Stinger 2020 S, a rechargeable work light designed to deliver 2,000 lumens of brightness, as reported by Streamlight.

The Stinger 2020 S is equipped with a body-mounted switch featuring an intensity mode selector and battery status indicator.

Its ergonomic flat design and textured body provide improved grip during use.

Powered by a rechargeable Li-Ion battery, the device supports simultaneous charging of the light and an additional battery via its PiggyBack charging feature.

According to Streamlight Chief Revenue Officer Michael F. Dineen, the Stinger 2020 S builds on the original Stinger 2020 model with added functionality.

Dineen said: “This newest model features the added benefit of being compatible with a PiggyBack charger, which ensures users will never be without a spare battery when using the light for a full work shift.”

The light’s head-mounted on/off switch supports momentary or constant operation, while its mode selector offers high, medium, and low intensity settings.

High mode provides 2,000 lumens, 25,000 candela, and a 315-meter beam distance with a 2-hour run time.

Low mode extends the run time to 24 hours with 100 lumens and a 70-meter beam distance.

Design and durability features

The Stinger 2020 S is constructed from high-quality aluminium alloy and features a BOROFLOAT glass lens that is impact-resistant and gasket-sealed for added durability.

The device is IPX7-rated for water resistance, capable of submersion up to one meter for 30 minutes, and impact-tested to a height of two meters.

The light measures 19.53cm in length, weighs 346g, and is available in black.

It comes in Standard, PiggyBack, and Light Only models, each backed by Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Charging options and accessories

The Stinger 2020 S offers flexibility in charging with its compatibility with existing Stinger chargers and a 5-unit bank charger option.

His role focused on developing strategic sales initiatives and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders in safety markets.

Previously, Wolgemuth worked at Scott Safety from 2006 to 2017.

He served as Territory Sales Manager for Southern Europe for Tyco Business and later as Business Development Manager – Europe Military & Civil Defence.

His responsibilities included sales development, marketing strategy, and conducting end-user training in the safety and defence sectors.

Career foundation in safety and sales

Wolgemuth’s career began in the personal safety industry, working for Janfer as Sales and Marketing Manager in Spain between 2003 and 2006.

Prior to this, he gained experience in the telecommunications sector, working as an Executive Sales Engineer for Movicom/Bell South in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

His experience in both safety and sales roles has equipped him with the skills necessary to succeed in his new position at Streamlight.

Portable lighting is an essential tool in the fire sector, providing critical visibility and safety for firefighters in the most challenging environments.

Streamlight, a leader in the field of portable lighting solutions, has consistently delivered products that meet the rigorous demands of emergency services.

Aaron Freund, the Director of Sales for the Industrial and Fire Divisions, has been instrumental in this effort.

In this interview, IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey sat down with Freund to explore the role of lighting technology in fire safety and emergency response.

What advancements in lighting technology for the fire sector have you observed over the past decade?

When I first started, we were still discussing the need for incandescent bulbs because some end users believed they cut through smoke better than LED bulbs.

The lighting industry has evolved incredibly, as we have long since demonstrated that LEDs perform just as well, if not better, in smoky atmospheres.

Battery technology has also advanced significantly.

Our lights have become more efficient, using less energy while providing brighter and more consistent illumination.

The weight of our products has decreased dramatically by using newer lightweight batteries; example, the weight of our Survivor® X light has dropped considerably by 164 grams.

We recently relaunched our E-Spot® LiteBox® with a lithium-ion battery, reducing its weight by almost 3.6 kg.

This weight reduction is crucial for firefighters, given the amount of gear they must carry.

These advancements have been incremental but substantial over my time with Streamlight.

We’ve made steady improvements.

One such improvement is the addition of battery indicators on top of Survivor® X lights.

This allows users to see a green indicator for a full battery and a red one when it’s time to change or charge batteries.

What are the critical challenges firefighters face in low-visibility environments?

I think the obvious challenge is visibility.

At its simplest, a flashlight makes a dark area brighter, but there’s more to it.

It’s also about having the right type of light and ensuring it’s focused correctly.

For instance, in a low-visibility, smoke-filled room, using a floodlight is like driving through fog with your high beams on – the light will reflect back at you, making it harder to see.

A focused light that cuts through the smoke is crucial.

Another major aspect is visibility for others.

Sometimes, you might only see as far as your arm’s length because of the dense smoke, but someone else across the room can spot your light and locate you, which is incredibly important in fire scenarios.

Marking points of entry and exit with light also helps in navigating and identifying potential hazards.

Having the right light greatly enhances safety by allowing firefighters to see and be seen in hazardous environments.

How has the trend of hands-free operation evolved, and what innovations are emerging?

Whether it’s forcible entry, pulling hose, or handling an extrication call, the need for firefighters to keep their hands available is crucial.

We are seeing a continuous increase in the demand for hands-free lighting solutions.

This includes traditional headlamps and our helmet-mounted firefighting lights.

There has been significant growth in this category, and we are dedicating more time and innovation to developing products that allow for hands-free operation.

For example, our Vantage® 180 X light can be mounted on a helmet but also removed and used as a handheld light in a 90-degree angle.

 As demands grow for hands-free lighting, it continues to be essential for us to create advancements in this area allowing for user versatility.

Why is durability and reliability, supported by standards, important for Streamlight?

Whenever you walk into a firehouse and talk about any tool they use, they often mention whether it’s “firefighter-proof” or not.

Firefighters take pride in being tough on their products and tools.

You cannot introduce a product to the fire service that isn’t durable and made of highly resilient materials.

In the design process, durability is a key focus for Streamlight.

We ensure our products can withstand being dropped or exposed to extreme conditions, such as 500 degrees for five minutes as per the NFPA 1971-8.6 (2018).

Testing to these and other standards is critical.

We drop test our products, test for IP ratings, ensure they don’t interfere with other radio waves, as well as a magnitude of other tests, making them reliable in all situations.

Our products are tested both in-house and by third-party agencies.

This includes various laboratories to ensure we meet standards set by agencies like NFPA, UL, ATEX, and INMETRO.

Our products consistently exceed these standards, which is crucial for those in the fire safety industry.

How should fire departments select lighting tools to best meet their unique needs?

We aim to be as involved as possible in this process by meeting with departments to discuss their needs.

Flashlights are a hands-on product; you need to touch and feel them.

I always joke with our customers that they have to shine the light in their eyes to understand its brightness and have that “aha” moment of realisation about how they’ll use it.

No two fire departments are the same, and each has different applications and responses based on their unique communities.

It’s important to understand this aspect, and I believe it holds true in Europe as well.

Engaging with the department, learning about their specific needs, and then making tailored recommendations is crucial.

Additionally, we have a testing and evaluation programme where we put the product in the hands of the users at a departmental level.

This allows them to touch, feel, and test the product to ensure it meets their needs and applications before making a purchase.

How can advancements in portable scene lighting improve emergency response effectiveness and safety?

The faster you can light up a scene, the quicker you can assess the situation and respond accordingly.

Scene lighting has become vital to our product line.

We now have multiple products, including the Portable Scene Light, Portable Scene Light EXT, and Portable Scene Light II.

These products are quick to deploy, battery-operated, and fully waterproof.

This combination of features is unique to us and allows for rapid illumination of an area.

We are continually advancing in this area, creating more products within the scene lighting category because it is so essential.

On the fire ground, you don’t want cords everywhere creating trip hazards.

There’s also a growing demand from fire departments for sustainable solutions.

What emerging trends and technologies do you think will shape the future of emergency response?

I believe we will continue to see flashlights becoming brighter, running longer, and weighing less while maintaining durability and functionality.

The focus will remain on creating tools that allow firefighters to do their jobs efficiently and safely.

I foresee continued innovation in scene lighting and helmet lighting for the fire service.

We are also developing more versatile lights.

For instance, we recently launched the Survivor Pivot®, which has a head that pivots up and uses the same universal battery platform as our Survivor® X.

 This means multiple lights can run off the same battery platform.

I believe the future will bring more efficient products with diverse applications, allowing users to meet their needs in various ways.

What innovations or developments can we expect from Streamlight

As previously mentioned, our newest innovation is the Survivor Pivot®, with both spot and flood beams in the same pivoting head.

The feedback from the fire service has been tremendous.

The ability to have a light attached to your gear that can rotate and direct light where you need it is incredible.

Additionally, it can be removed from your bunker gear and attached to the side of a vehicle with its powerful magnet, illuminating areas during extrication calls.

Major departments are buying the Survivor® X for all their rigs.

The ability to now add the Survivor Pivot® with its shared battery platform as an additional lighting tool has been very well received.

We are excited about this product and believe it will be very successful.

We’ve also made improvements to our legacy product, the LiteBox®, which has been in our product line for over 40 years.

Enhancing this tried-and-true technology to make it lighter, brighter, and more efficient has been a significant achievement.

The response to these improvements has been very positive.

Streamlight will continue to innovate.

Streamlight launches new colours for Wedge EDC flashlight for easier identification

New colour options for the Wedge EDC flashlight

Streamlight, Inc. has introduced new colours for its Wedge EDC slim pocket flashlight.

As reported by Streamlight, the new colours include blue, purple, and red, in addition to the existing black and coyote options.

These new options aim to help users more easily identify their flashlight or express personal style.

The Wedge EDC flashlight features a USB-C rechargeable design and offers two modes: a 300-lumen “constant on” mode and a 1,000-lumen momentary THRO (Temporarily Heightened Regulated Output) mode.

Performance features of the Wedge EDC flashlight

The Wedge delivers a 35-second burst of 1,000 lumens and 3,000 candela over a 110-metre beam distance on the THRO momentary setting.

In “constant on” mode, it provides 300 lumens, 1,200 candela, a beam distance of 69 metres, and a 3-hour run time.

The flashlight uses a 1500 mAh lithium polymer battery cell that recharges via a USB-C cord plugged into the light’s waterproof charging port.

Constructed from rugged anodized aluminium, the Wedge measures 13.87 cm in length and 2.54 cm in height, and weighs 93.55 grams.

It also includes a reversible pocket clip for concealed carry in either pocket.

The light is IPX7-rated for waterproof operation up to one meter and has been tested for impact resistance up to one meter.

ProTac HL 6 tactical light now available from Streamlight

Streamlight Inc. has launched the ProTac HL 6, the latest and brightest member of its ProTac series of tactical lights.

The new light delivers up to 5,300 lumens and features a beam reach of 566 metres.

It comes with a charge cord and two Streamlight SL-B48 Li-Ion rechargeable battery packs with an integrated USB-C charge port.

Streamlight Chief Revenue Officer Michael F. Dineen said: “The ProTac HL 6 is like a handheld flood light, allowing users to see all around them while also providing a powerful beam reach to put more light on a target at a distance.”

He added that the light is ideal for first responders, outdoor enthusiasts, and industrial technicians.

Features of the ProTac HL 6

The ProTac HL 6 uses the latest power LED technology, offering extreme brightness.

It has a multi-function, easy-access head switch that enables one-handed operation of the light’s momentary, variable intensity, or strobe modes.

On the high setting, it delivers 5,300 lumens and 80,000 candela over 566 metres.

The medium setting offers 1,500 lumens and 23,000 candela over 303 metres, while the low setting provides 450 lumens and 6,700 candela over 164 metres.

Run time varies from 12 hours and 30 minutes on low to two hours on high, with four hours in strobe mode.

The light also features TEN-TAP programming, which allows users to select from three programs: high/strobe/low (factory default), high only, or low/medium/high.

The ProTac HL 6 is powered by two 5000mAh SL-B48 protected Li-Ion USB-C rechargeable battery packs, which can be recharged up to 500 times.

Construction and durability

The ProTac HL 6 is made from 6000 series machined aircraft aluminium with an anodised finish.

It features an anti-roll face cap, a textured rubber sleeve, and a lanyard to ensure a secure grip.

The light also includes a gasket-sealed glass lens with an anti-reflective coating.

Measuring 26.6 cm in length and weighing 590g with two SL-B48 rechargeable batteries, the ProTac HL 6 is rated IPX7, making it waterproof to one metre for 30 minutes.

It is also impact resistance-tested to one metre.

Available in black, the light comes in two models: the ProTac HL 6 with a 120V USB adapter or without an adapter.

Streamlight launches safety-rated Survivor Pivot light for hazardous environments

Streamlight Inc. has launched the Survivor Pivot, an intrinsically safe, right-angle LED flashlight designed for industrial workers, first responders, and professionals working in hazardous environments.

The flashlight offers both spot and flood beams, a 90-degree articulating head, and an easy-to-use push-button switch for controlling lighting modes.

It is rated for use in Class 1, Division 1 environments and is available in a model that is ATEX and IECEx-certified for use in Zone 0 locations.

Versatile lighting and power options

The Survivor Pivot has a forward-facing LED spot beam for distance illumination and a flood beam angled downward for close-up work.

The beams can be used individually or simultaneously, delivering 325 lumens and optimizing navigation while eliminating blind spots.

Michael F. Dineen, Streamlight’s Chief Revenue Officer, stated: “The Survivor Pivot is a safe, powerful right-angle light for personnel who work in potentially explosive or hazardous environments.

The flashlight features a multi-fuel design, allowing users to recharge via a Li-Ion battery pack, use a Streamlight SL-B26 USB-rechargeable battery, or AA alkaline batteries.

Performance and durability

In spot mode, the Survivor Pivot produces up to 300 lumens and 34,000 candela over a 369-meter beam distance.

In flood mode, it offers up to 300 lumens, 300 candela, and a beam distance of 35 meters.

Combined, the beams provide 325 lumens and 19,000 candela over 276 meters.

The light operates on a 2.6Ahr Li-Ion battery pack that is rechargeable up to 1,000 times and fully recharges in 5 hours.

It also supports the Streamlight SL-B26 USB rechargeable battery pack or three AA alkaline batteries, ensuring users are not caught in the dark with a spent battery.

The casing, base, and battery housing are made from durable polymer, and the light features a heavy-duty, spring-loaded clip with a built-in attachment D-ring for superior retention.

The Survivor Pivot is IP67 dust-tight and waterproof, with an impact resistance of up to 2 meters.

Additional features and specifications

The Survivor Pivot offers high and low brightness levels, with run times ranging from 3.75 hours on high to 16 hours on low when using the Li-Ion or SL-B26 battery packs.

With alkaline batteries, the run times range from 4.5 hours on high to 15 hours on low.

The flashlight measures 20.14 cm in height and weighs between 448g and 488g, depending on the battery and magnet attachment.

All openings are O-ring sealed to resist moisture, and the light’s unbreakable polycarbonate lens with silicone anti-scratch coating ensures durability.
