Modern water mist technology is a sophisticated evolution of the systems developed three decades ago.

While the fundamental principles have remained consistent, advancements have significantly broadened the scope of applications, approvals and validation processes.

Modern water mist systems have expanded far beyond their initial applications.

They are now employed in a wide variety of environments, including commercial and residential buildings, industrial facilities, marine and transportation infrastructure.

The technology’s versatility allows it to address a diverse array of fire risks, including new and emerging hazards.

Over the years, water mist systems have undergone extensive validation through experimental fire tests.

This rigorous testing has established their effectiveness across various scenarios and led to the development of comprehensive standards and approvals.

The rapid pace of change in the world has introduced new fire risks and challenges.

Modern water mist technology is practised at adapting to these.

The industry is accustomed to carrying out fire tests, enabling quick responses to new or evolving risks.

Mist systems are well-known in typical applications performed with performance-based fire safety design methods.

Recent advancements have addressed fire safety issues related to cross-laminated timber (CLT) structures, tunnel protection, lithium-ion battery applications, power generation, air hangars, data centres, various industrial risks and complex steel and glass structures.

While the core principles of water mist technology have not changed, ongoing improvements in system design, nozzle technology and control mechanisms have enhanced their performance and efficiency.

These advancements ensure that water mist systems remain at the forefront of fire protection technology.

Modern water mist technology represents a blend of well-established principles and innovations.

Although the fundamental concepts have been around for decades, the technology’s evolution has been marked by increased application versatility, rigorous validation and a proactive approach to addressing new fire risks.

This dynamic nature of water mist systems allows them to remain a vital and effective tool in modern fire protection.

Physical fundamentals of water mist technology

Modern water mist firefighting systems are based on three key principles: cooling, oxygen displacement and radiant heat attenuation.

Water mist systems maximise the cooling effect by producing fine droplets, which increase the water’s surface area for better heat absorption and faster cooling.

This rapid cooling slows combustion and makes these systems effective for complex fire geometries, including flammable liquid or grease fires.

The fine mist also displaces oxygen as it evaporates, starving the fire of a critical element for combustion.

Additionally, water mist blocks radiant heat by creating a mist curtain that absorbs and scatters heat, preventing fire spread and protecting nearby areas.

Together, these principles make water mist systems highly effective in controlling and extinguishing fires.

Growth and limitations

Water mist technology has gained considerable popularity in the past two decades, driven by its technical and environmental advantages.

While its fundamental principles have been known for over a century, recent advancements in installation, safety and efficiency have made water mist systems a preferred choice for fire protection across various industries.

Technical benefits

One major reason for the growing adoption of water mist systems is their ease and speed of installation.

These systems use smaller components, such as compact pipes and tanks, which make installation faster and more straightforward compared to traditional fire suppression systems.

Additionally, water mist systems can be easily retrofitted into existing buildings, including heritage sites or architecturally significant structures, where minimal disruption is crucial.

Another technical advantage is that these systems do not require compartmentation, unlike gaseous systems, allowing them to activate immediately and limit fire damage in sensitive areas like data centres.

The finer droplets produced by water mist systems offer superior fire suppression capabilities by quickly distributing mist throughout the space, even penetrating concealed areas where traditional sprinklers may struggle.

This distribution helps control fires more effectively, especially in complex or confined spaces.

Water mist also helps control smoke by cooling the smoke layer, reducing the risk of fire spread and improving visibility, which is critical for evacuation and firefighting efforts.

Importantly, water mist is safe for humans, making it suitable for use in occupied areas and because it uses far less water than traditional sprinklers, it minimises water damage to property.

Environmental considerations

Environmental sustainability is another driving factor behind the popularity of water mist systems.

These systems consume significantly less water compared to traditional sprinkler systems, which not only reduces potential water damage but also supports environmental conservation.

This is particularly appealing for businesses looking to minimise operational disruptions after a fire.

Unlike chemical-based fire suppression systems, water mist has no negative environmental impact.

It does not deplete the ozone layer, contribute to global warming, or produce harmful by-products.

Additionally, the simplicity of cleanup and disposal after a fire event makes water mist systems even more eco-friendly.

Their non-toxic, water-based nature ensures they do not pose any risks to human health or the environment.

Challenges and hurdles

One obstacle is the limited pool of professionals with the expertise to design, install and maintain these systems, as water mist technology is still relatively new in comparison to traditional fire suppression methods.

Additionally, the long-established dominance of sprinkler and gas-based fire systems creates resistance within the industry.

These older technologies have a proven track record and broad regulatory approval, making some stakeholders hesitant to switch to newer methods, even when they offer significant advantages.

Another barrier to wider adoption is cost.

Water mist systems tend to have higher upfront costs due to advanced components like pumps and specialised nozzles.

However, these costs are often outweighed by long-term benefits, such as reduced water usage and less damage to property.

Despite these challenges, water mist technology continues to grow in popularity, driven by its technical and environmental advantages.

What is the future of modern water mist technology?

In my opinion, the trend of growth and expansion within the water mist industry is set to continue.

Its efficiency in fire protection, coupled with environmental benefits, makes it increasingly appealing for modern applications.

The application scope of water mist systems is expected to broaden, particularly in areas like energy storage, data centres and automotive industries.

Performance-based designs are becoming more common, enabling tailored solutions for specific fire risks, as seen in innovative projects like the Eurotunnel.

Environmental concerns will further drive water mist’s adoption.

Its low water usage and non-toxic properties align well with global sustainability goals and future innovations in water recycling and conservation will enhance its eco-friendly appeal.

As regulations around sustainability tighten, water mist systems are likely to benefit from favourable policies and incentives.

Standardisation and increased market penetration will also play a significant role.

As more standards are developed, costs will decrease, making these systems more accessible.

Education, training and ongoing research will continue to support the technology’s evolution, ensuring water mist remains a leading fire protection solution.

Conclusions

Modern water mist technology has advanced significantly over the past 30 years, becoming both a well-established and commercially valuable technology.

Its impact goes beyond mere commercial success, driving substantial innovations in fire protection.

Looking ahead, the water mist industry is set for continued growth.

With ongoing advancements in design, expanding application scopes and a stronger focus on sustainability and eco-friendliness, water mist technology will play an increasingly vital role in modern fire protection.

As costs decrease and knowledge broadens, these systems will address both traditional and emerging fire safety needs more effectively.

As reported by Plumis, the UK-based fire safety firm has attained UL certification for its Automist system, marking a major development in residential fire protection.

Automist is now the first targeted water mist fire protection system for residential use to earn certification under UL2167A, a rigorous standard for safety and reliability.

This achievement follows extensive testing conducted by UL Solutions, a leader in safety certification.

The certification process for Automist involved seven years of research and an investment of $6 million, underscoring Plumis’s commitment to advancing fire safety.

UL Solutions’ certification confirms that Automist meets global standards for quality and safety, paving the way for its potential adoption in homes worldwide under NFPA 750 standards for water mist systems.

Rigorous testing ensures Automist’s compliance with safety standards

Automist underwent extensive testing for UL certification, which included rigorous assessments of each component, such as its targeting nozzle, valves, pump, motor, and control units.

These components were scrutinised under multiple UL standards, including UL 2167A and UL 268, which address fire suppression system requirements for residential properties.

According to UL Solutions, the certification signifies that Automist meets stringent safety and reliability standards for residential use, contributing to enhanced fire safety options in home settings.

Automist’s compliance with these standards further establishes its readiness for residential installations that align with international fire codes.

CEO of Plumis highlights Automist’s international potential

William Makant, CEO of Plumis, stated: “This breakthrough builds on the success of the UK version of the product, which has already been installed in over 14,000 homes following extensive fire engineering research and has been independently verified for compliance with BS 8458.”

He further explained that the US variant of the product is designed to meet fire safety requirements in regions governed by the International Fire Code, with plans for exclusive distribution through Ferguson Fire & Fabrication in North America.

Makant expressed that this milestone reflects Plumis’s commitment to exceeding fire safety regulations across different territories.

By aligning its products with local and international standards, Plumis aims to facilitate safer residential environments.

UL Solutions supports Plumis in advancing fire safety technology

Kerry Bell, Principal Engineer and Corporate Fellow at UL Solutions, commented on the partnership with Plumis: “Using hazard-based safety engineering principles, we developed an Outline of Investigation to evaluate and certify this new technology from Plumis.

Dafo Vehicle achieves compliance with Swedish fire safety standard

Dafo Vehicle Fire Protection has obtained the SBF 127:17 certification for its fluorine-free fire suppression system, Forrex EVO.

This certification signifies compliance with Sweden’s stringent fire safety standards, requiring the Forrex EVO system to operate at a volume of 3 litres per cubic metre.

The SBF 127:17 standard applies to fire suppression systems in vehicles frequently used in high-risk industries such as mining, forestry, and construction.

By meeting these standards, Dafo’s system demonstrates its capacity to detect and extinguish fires efficiently, ensuring safety for both equipment and operators.

Details of the SBF 127:17 standard

The SBF 127:17 is a rigorous Swedish standard that sets specific requirements for vehicle fire suppression systems, especially in industries where the risk of fire is high.

Meeting this standard requires systems to ensure operational reliability and consistent fire suppression performance.

Dafo Vehicle Fire Protection’s Forrex EVO system meets these specifications, allowing the system to function effectively while remaining fluorine-free.

The system is approved for a 3 litres per cubic metre usage volume, ensuring fire suppression with reduced environmental impact due to the absence of fluorine-based agents.

Requirements for customers using Forrex agent

Dafo Vehicle has outlined guidelines for customers still using the traditional Forrex suppression agent.

Under the SBF 127:17 standard, these systems must meet a requirement of 3.75 litres per cubic metre to comply.

Systems designed according to the previous SBF 127:16 standard will maintain those requirements if system designs remain unchanged.

For the Dafo SV-K and SV-B systems adhering to SBF 127:17, these updated standards provide clear volume requirements, depending on the agent used and system design.

Customers are advised to review these updates to ensure their systems meet the latest regulatory guidelines.

Applicability to various Dafo systems and other standards

While the SBF 127:17 standard primarily affects Dafo’s SV-K and SV-B systems, other standards may apply to systems installed under different industry-specific regulations.

Dafo Vehicle has provided guidelines for these scenarios, suggesting that systems outside SBF 127:17 may apply the standard 3 litres per cubic metre criteria based on individual risk assessments and Dafo’s design manuals.

Dafo Vehicle notes that systems not required to comply with SBF 127 will follow other design criteria outlined in their manuals.

Customers are encouraged to consult these documents or contact Dafo’s technical support team for any questions about compliance or installation.

The firefighting foam industry is undergoing significant changes as it transitions from fluorinated to fluorine-free formulations.

These developments are driven by stringent environmental regulations and the need for high-performance alternatives that comply with international standards.

IFSJ caught up with John Ottesen, CEO of Fomtec, to discuss the company’s innovations and the evolving landscape of firefighting foam solutions., examining the technical advancements in fluorine-free foam formulations, their performance in fixed foam systems and the implications for future fire suppression technologies.

As an early leader in fluorine-free firefighting foams, how have perceptions towards these products evolved?

Having worked with fluorinated foams throughout my career, I initially had concerns about whether we could develop fluorine-free foams with performance levels comparable to AFFF or AR-AFFF.

Now, over a decade later, we’ve successfully formulated and received approval for a range of SFFF products under our ‘Enviro’ brand, meeting various international standards.

Fluorine-free foams certainly do perform effectively, but just like their fluorinated counterparts, they must be applied according to international design standards, such as those outlined by NFPA or FM data pages.

This includes adhering to recommended application densities, durations and using equipment that has been specifically tested and approved for compatibility with the foam concentrate.

How does Fomtec’s fluorine-free foam stand out compared to traditional AFFFs?

When it comes to AFFF, we manufacture and offer a variety of C6 AFFF formulations, each designed and approved to meet different international standards depending on the market they serve.

Our AFFFs are tailored to meet the needs of municipal fire departments, the stringent specifications of US Military Standards, the quick suppression and control demands of Aviation Fire & Rescue teams (as per ICAO) and the requirements for use with standard (non-aspirating) sprinklers.

Introduced more than five years ago, Enviro USP was developed as an alternative to AFFF and has since been tested and approved to several key standards, including:

EN 1568-3           IA rating on fresh water

UL 162                 Topside and Sprinkler (Test on heptane)

FM 5130              Topside and Sprinkler (Approved on heptane and Jet A-1 up to 14.5m

ICAO                     Level B

IMO 1312            @ 6%

Enviro USP is also approved by GESIP and during a quality control test conducted under the LASTFIRE protocol using freshwater on heptane, it achieved ‘GOOD, GOOD, GOOD’ performance.

Although it was ultimately disqualified by the US Department of Defense due to the requirement for a low viscosity foam concentrate in their extensive testing for the new MIL SPEC for Fluorine-Free Foams, Enviro USP successfully met all the fire performance standards that are now included in the specification.

As for Alcohol Resistant SFFFs, our current standout product is Enviro ARK, which I’m proud to say was the first SFFF approved by FM for use on polar solvent fuels with standard sprinklers.

Through our testing and approval work with both UL and FM, Enviro USP and Enviro ARK became the first SFFFs that could be deployed in line with NFPA standards across all types of fixed foam systems, regardless of the discharge device or fuel.

How does Fomtec’s fluorine-free foams comply with and, at times, push the boundaries of current industry standards?

It’s well known that Fomtec prefers UL and FM test standards, as we believe their ‘system’ approach more accurately reflects real-world foam usage, compared to relying on a single data point from a test nozzle designed to show good expansion and drain times.

With over 2,500 full-scale fire tests conducted as part of our Enviro Programme, we have extensive data that supports our belief that the foam qualities achieved with fluorine-free foams play a more significant role in fire performance than what we observed with fluorinated foams.

Even within the UL and FM standards, we’ve seen adjustments due to data gathered from testing SFFFs.

How does research and development contribute to the ongoing enhancement of fluorine-free foams and additives?

I believe it’s safe to say that SFFFs are likely the most thoroughly tested foam agents ever brought to market.

I understand the concerns—I’ve had them myself—about the removal of fluorochemicals, which represents a significant shift in the chemistry of firefighting foams.

It’s natural to be wary of change, especially when it comes to safety products.

We need assurance that the new solution works and there’s always the inevitable comparison between the old and the new.

The fire performance of SFFFs is more influenced by factors such as the type of fuel, application methods (direct, indirect and height variations) and foam characteristics (expansion ratio, drain times and bubble structure) than fluorinated foams.

Understanding how these variables affect performance and their limitations is precisely why we conduct so many full-scale fire tests.

Without data, then we only have opinions.

How does fluorine-free foams perform when used with various sprinkler standards, like UL 162 and FM 5130?

In collaboration with our hardware partner, the Viking Group, Fomtec has focused on developing high-performance SFFFs for use in fixed foam systems, including those that must work with standard non-aspirating sprinklers.

Since the 2018 edition of EN 13565-2 offers no specific guidance or test standard for foam-assisted sprinkler systems, we knew we needed to adhere to UL 162 and FM 5130 standards.

While there are some differences between the two testing protocols, they share the key principle that the foam agent is listed and approved together with the specific sprinkler used in testing.

When comparing our listings and approvals for Enviro USP and Enviro ARK with those for C6 AFFF 3% S and ARC 3×3 S, we find that in most cases, the required application densities are similar.

However, under the FM 5130 protocol, Enviro products offer an extended height range compared to the C6 products.

What has been consistently reinforced through the approval process of Enviro USP and Enviro ARK with sprinklers is the fact that UL and FM tie the foam to the specific discharge head.

Our testing has shown that assuming a different head with the same K-factor will work because a similar one has been tested is incorrect.

Even minor variations, such as the deflector plate design between two models with the same K-factor, can make the difference between a safe pass and a failure.

The current EN design standard, EN 13565-2, advises to ‘consult the manufacturer’ for application density and related details when using standard sprinklers.

With the data and approvals we’ve gathered, we are confident in our position as a trusted manufacturer that can be consulted with assurance.

Are we now at a stage where fluorine-free foams can be considered direct ‘drop-in’ replacements?

The transition must first be evaluated from a fire performance perspective—specifically, can the new SFFF be applied at the same density and for the same duration as the previous foam? Once this primary concern is addressed, the next step is to assess whether the existing equipment and system are compatible with the fluorine-free foam.

For existing systems, there is also the question of whether to clean and decontaminate the current setup or replace the equipment entirely, which might be more cost-effective.

This decision becomes even more complex when dealing with mobile equipment, where the evaluation is significantly more challenging.

Finally, what is Fomtec’s stance on exiting the fluorinated foam market?

We have repeatedly stated over the years that we will continue to manufacture and offer fluorinated foams to support clients who still wish to use them and are legally able to do so.

We remain fully committed to complying with all applicable regulations.

However, it’s important to note that the industry lobbied ECHA in the EU for exemptions regarding the timeline for phasing out C6 fluorinated foams and transitioning to fluorine-free alternatives.

For high-risk SEVESO companies, this period could extend up to 10 years from when the law takes effect.

During this time, our goal is to continue supporting these companies with high-performance C6 foams if they require them.
