Globe Gear Giveaway application period now open

The 2026 application period is now open for MSA’s Globe Gear Giveaway, which will award new Globe turnout gear and MSA Cairns helmets to selected volunteer fire departments in the US and Canada.

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) said the annual programme enables eligible departments in need to apply for four sets of turnout jackets, pants and helmets.

The application period is open through noon ET on June 1.

Eligibility, awards and programme track record

The programme is in its 15th year and has provided 186 departments with 819 sets of turnouts and 364 helmets.

In 2026, 52 sets of gear will be awarded to 13 departments.

To be eligible, a department must be over 50% volunteer.

A department must serve a population of 25,000 or less.

A department must be located in the United States or Canada and be legally organised under state or province law.

The criteria states that Indian or tribal entities not organised under state or province law are eligible.

A department must have at least one active NVFC member.

To help departments meet the NVFC membership requirement, MSA will provide one year individual NVFC memberships to the first 500 applicants.

Applicants must also demonstrate a need for the gear.

NVFC Chair Steve Hirsch said: “Turnout gear is critical to the health, safety, and effectiveness of firefighters, yet there are many volunteer fire departments across the U.S. and Canada that struggle to find funding for the gear they need.

“For 15 years, this program has helped address that need and ensure more firefighters are properly equipped to serve their communities.

San Francisco Fire Department adopts non-PFAS turnout gear across fleet

San Francisco completes fleetwide non-PFAS gear transition with Fire-Dex

The San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) has become the largest fire department in the United States to transition its entire fleet to non-PFAS turnout gear, according to Fire-Dex.

Fire-Dex said the department is scheduled to receive 1,100 sets of non-PFAS turnout gear by Wednesday 31 December 2025, providing one set for every frontline suppression member.

Fire-Dex said the first shipment was delivered in December 2025.

Fire-Dex said the purchase was funded in part through a $2.35 million Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and matching funds from the department.

non-PFAS rollout follows city ordinance

Fire-Dex said the transition follows an ordinance passed in May 2024 that made San Francisco the first city in the country to ban the use of PFAS chemicals in firefighters’ turnout gear.

Fire-Dex said the ordinance set a deadline of Monday 30 June 2026 for the department to complete the switch.

Fire-Dex said department officials moved to procure and test potential options and selected the final gear ahead of that deadline.

Fire-Dex said San Francisco covers 49 square miles and is the fourth largest city in California.

Fire-Dex said the San Francisco Fire Department is the 10th largest fire department in the United States and serves an estimated 1.5 million people.

Fire-Dex said the department operates 45 stations and responds to an average of 180,000 annual emergency calls.

Testing, UL certification and NFPA standards

Fire-Dex said the selected gear went through performance and safety testing, including a 90-day wear trial with 50 firefighters.

Fire-Dex said the trial included live fire training at the San Francisco Division of Training burn rooms.

Fire-Dex said the turnout gear is UL certified.

Fire-Dex said it meets the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1971-2018 and 1971-2025 standards.

Fire-Dex said non-fluorinated fabrics have existed for turnout gear outer shells and thermal liners, while moisture barrier alternatives remained a technical challenge.

Moisture barrier and supply chain partners

Fire-Dex said Milliken & Company introduced Milliken Assure in October 2024 as a non-PFAS, non-halogenated flame-resistant moisture barrier.

Fire-Dex said this enabled Fire-Dex to provide a solution that met the department’s requirements.

Marcio Manique, SVP and Managing Director of Milliken’s apparel business, said: “A non-PFAS moisture barrier was the missing piece for departments wanting to move away from fluorinated chemicals.

“With Assure, we refused to trade one hazard for another.

Fire-Dex said the San Francisco Fire Department worked with MES Life Safety to order the garments from Fire-Dex and to size each firefighter individually.

The San Francisco Fire Department’s timeline sets out how quickly a large urban department can complete a non-PFAS turnout gear changeover when a city ordinance includes a fixed compliance date.

The sourcing approach described by Fire-Dex links grant funding, matching departmental funds and a structured sizing programme delivered through a distributor.

The testing details, including a 90-day wear trial during live fire training, provide a reference point for training officers and equipment specifiers considering how to validate new PPE before full rollout.

The UL certification and NFPA 1971-2018 and 1971-2025 compliance claims provide a standards-based checklist for procurement teams comparing options.

The moisture barrier requirement, described as a key technical constraint, frames why some departments may focus evaluation on barrier performance, weight and breathability alongside shell and liner fabrics.

Carcinogens in Quincy gear: why firefighters say trust is broken

Independent testing confirms presence of PFAS in new gear

Independent testing has confirmed the presence of carcinogens in turnout gear purchased by Quincy, Massachusetts.

According to the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), the equipment was advertised as PFAS-free but analysis showed high levels of the chemicals.

Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch said: “It’s truly outrageous to me, and deeply troubling, that we stand here today talking about how the new gear that we bought – sold to us on the premise that it had no PFAS in it, PFAS-free, that’s how it was advertised – was recently independently tested and came back highly positive with PFAS components in the gear.”

The IAFF stated that the results confirm fire fighters cannot rely on industry assurances about safety claims.

IAFF General President Edward Kelly said: “We cannot trust the manufacturers. We have to do independent testing on our own and ensure that what we’re being told is true – that dangerous chemicals are not infused in our gear.”

Context of PFAS risks and carcinogens

The IAFF reported that the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified some PFAS as carcinogenic.

It added that growing scientific evidence points to long-term health risks from exposure.

Quincy’s Local 792 requested the independent analysis after concerns about the PFAS-free claims made by the manufacturer.

The city had begun purchasing new gear two years ago, and the decision to test was made to confirm that equipment met safety expectations.

The IAFF explained that the findings from Quincy illustrate how carcinogens remain present in turnout gear despite marketing assurances.

Local leadership response in Quincy

Quincy Local 792 President Tom Bowes said the findings highlight the failures of manufacturers to provide safe equipment.

Bowes said: “The last few months dealing with this issue have been frustrating, angry, and, truthfully, sad, seeing what these companies continue to pull.

“These companies are paid to protect us, and they have failed miserably.

“We do this job because we love helping people.

All we ask is to be protected.”

Bowes confirmed that support from the IAFF, 3rd District Vice President Jay Colbert, the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts, and city officials has helped Local 792 address the problem.

The IAFF stated that the collaboration has been essential in navigating the outcome of the testing.

NFPA standards restricting carcinogens in gear

The IAFF reported that its advocacy has helped shape new standards on turnout gear.

In October 2024, NFPA issued Standard 1970, the first to restrict PFAS and other hazardous substances in turnout gear.

The organisation said the standard introduces a Restricted Substances List prohibiting chemicals such as PFAS and certain flame retardants.

This provision takes effect on 18 September 2025, and manufacturers may continue selling existing gear until 18 March 2026.

It said this gap leaves a period where fire fighters could still purchase equipment containing PFAS or other substances.

The IAFF added that NFPA 1970 also changes UV Light Degradation tests to reflect real-world conditions.

The association reported that the new framework may support the development of next-generation protective clothing.

It said the standard also establishes voluntary labelling to indicate gear tested and found to contain 100 ppm or less total fluorine.

Calls for continued vigilance

Kelly said the issue is wider than Quincy alone.

He said: “This is not a Quincy-centric issue. This is something that impacts fire fighters across North America.

“We cannot trust corporations to tell us the truth.

They have failed us too many times.”

The IAFF explained that while the NFPA changes are progress, the Quincy results highlight the ongoing need for independent testing.

It added that carcinogens in turnout gear remain a concern for departments across the continent.

Relevance for fire and safety professionals

The IAFF stated that the findings in Quincy show how carcinogens may still be present in gear marketed as safe.

The organisation said this emphasises the importance of independent testing of equipment.

It explained that fire departments should be aware of the timeline for NFPA 1970 implementation and the continued presence of PFAS in the market.

It added that professionals across the sector can use this information to inform procurement, policy, and training decisions.

The hidden risk in firefighter gear that the US Army says it is removing

First Army unit transitions to PFAS-free bunker gear

The US Army has reported that its Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) 596th Transportation Brigade has completed a full transition to PFAS-free firefighting gear.

The Army explained that this marks the first time a unit has entirely replaced bunker gear previously containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS or “forever chemicals”.

According to the Army, PFAS were historically used in firefighting protective clothing for water and heat resistance, but exposure has been linked in research to elevated cancer risks.

The transition began at Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point in North Carolina and at Military Ocean Terminal Concord in California.

Bunker gear refers to the full protective suits worn by structural firefighters, designed to withstand high heat and hazardous conditions.

Leadership focus on firefighter protection

Lance Stratton, chief of SDDC’s Protection and Mission Assurance Division, said: “We acknowledged the potential health and safety risks associated with long-term exposure to forever chemicals and took action to improve the protection of our firefighters.

“This was about making sure the people protecting our facilities and communities are as safe as possible.”

Stratton noted that the process was slowed by difficulty in sourcing suitable equipment in the volumes needed.

He credited Fire Chief Michael Fox of Sunny Point for ensuring the procurement remained a command priority.

“Chief Fox was undeterred in his efforts,” Stratton said. “He made this procurement process a priority across the command.”

Legacy of Chief Scott

Fox explained that the initiative was originally championed by Chief Michael Scott, the former Sunny Point fire chief who died from cancer in April.

“Unfortunately, Chief Scott lost his battle with cancer earlier this year, which made the issue very personal for us,” Fox said.

“We pressed forward with his plan to keep our personnel as safe as we possibly can.

“Firefighting is inherently dangerous—the things we can see remind us of that.

“The things we can’t see are often the ones that get us.

“Carcinogens are everywhere.”

Scott’s death reinforced the risks posed by hidden chemical exposures faced by firefighters.

Procurement and standards compliance

The Army reported that following research and coordination with other departments, including Naval Air Station Key West, the brigade selected Honeywell’s Morning Pride gear.

It said the product meets or exceeds National Fire Protection Association requirements without containing PFAS.

The gear was obtained through the Defense Logistics Agency’s Fire and Emergency Services Equipment Tailored Logistics Support Program.

The Army confirmed that the first shipment was delivered on 28 July.

Fox said: “The new gear has been very well received.

“Knowing there is one less thing lurking in the gear that’s supposed to keep you safe is reassuring.”

Broader Department of Defense policy

According to the Army, this step aligns with wider Department of Defense measures to eliminate PFAS in both firefighting foams and protective clothing.

The 2020 National Defense Authorization Act directed the phase-out of aqueous film-forming foam containing PFAS by 2024, with possible extensions until 2026.

Stratton added: “PFAS, and their potential link to cancer, are a significant concern for firefighters.

“It strikes especially close to home for our team at Sunny Point.”

Fox added that he hopes the transition will be noticed beyond SDDC.

“Our job as leaders is to ensure our personnel go home after every shift,” Fox said.

“This is one more way we can help make that happen.”

Relevance for fire and safety professionals

This development highlights a shift in firefighting equipment procurement policies within the US military, moving towards PFAS-free materials.

It shows how health risks connected to turnout gear are being addressed at organisational level.

The process also reflects the challenges of vendor sourcing and compliance with National Fire Protection Association standards.

US Army adopts PFAS-free firefighting gear: Summary

Procurement was completed through the Defense Logistics Agency’s Fire and Emergency Services Equipment Tailored Logistics Support Program.

The first shipment of gear was delivered on 28 July.

The Army said this action aligns with Department of Defense goals to remove PFAS from firefighting foams and protective clothing.

The 2020 National Defense Authorization Act mandated a PFAS phase-out by 2024, with potential extensions until 2026.

Stratton said concerns about cancer made this change personal for the team at Sunny Point.

Fox said the gear provides reassurance by removing one risk from firefighter protective equipment.

Fit for purpose, fit for duty, with Fire-Dex

Todd Herring, Vice President of Product Innovation and Strategy at Fire-Dex, discusses how alternative PPE helps firefighters stay safer, reduce fatigue and extend turnout gear lifespan 

There’s no blueprint for fighting wildfires, much less the countless other emergencies firefighters must respond to. Recently, we’ve witnessed how quickly California’s Santa Ana winds can turn a small blaze into a raging inferno. Conditions and circumstances change in an instant—fires suddenly explode in size, while rescue missions can stretch for hours and miles, and firefighters must adapt on the fly. 

Simply put, daily workloads have no quick in and out or predictability. Responders must be ready to endure exhausting shifts, sometimes for days at a time, haul heavy gear over rugged terrain, or manage all the unknowns that may accompany a motor vehicle accident (MVA). 

In fact, NFPA statistics show that all firefighters are taking more calls than ever, including hazardous materials and hazardous conditions.

That’s why PPE manufacturers like Fire-Dex are designing gear to help ease stress on the fireground and beyond. Advances in material science, smarter designs and a changing philosophy are creating the next generation of apparel that’s designed to work with—not against—first responders and keep them in the fight longer. 

Rethinking PPE  

For a long time, many firefighters have worn the same PPE for every call. That usually means full turnouts for everything from a structural fire to an MVA in the July sun. But increasingly, research is revealing the downside of this thinking, making way for an approach that calls for the right gear for the right call.  

The shift is long overdue. While structural fire incidents have dropped significantly over the past 40 years, EMS calls have surged by 421%, and all other calls have nearly tripled according to the NFPA. Yet firefighters are still expected to wear turnouts for non-fire emergencies where no thermal protection is needed.  

Turnouts are great when you need them—but wearing them all day? That’s just added weight and stress on your body. Heat stress and overexertion are the top causes of firefighter line-of-duty-deaths (LODDs), and sometimes, lighter gear is the smarter choice.

Alternative PPE provides the right level of protection for most calls while preventing unnecessary fatigue and keeping structural gear fresh for when it’s truly needed. 

There’s also the issue of contamination. Firefighters don’t just fight fires—they bring part of them back. Moving between the scene, the truck, and the station in the same gear means contaminants can come along for the ride.

Studies show that air pollution inside fire stations poses significant risks, especially in living quarters and engine bays where gear and equipment are stored.

Pollutants can also concentrate inside fire trucks. Alternative PPE, as an option for non-fire calls, can help mitigate these risks by reducing the likelihood of cross-contamination. 

The alternative PPE advantage 

Not all PPE is created equal—especially when it comes to alternative gear. It’s not just about making something lighter; it has to be built to perform. Firefighters don’t just face one type of hazard. Even on non-fire calls, there’s still heat, abrasion and unexpected risks.  

That’s where strategic material selection comes in. The best alternative PPE doesn’t overload firefighters with unnecessary bulk, but it also doesn’t skimp on protection where it’s needed.

It’s a delicate balance: Use materials that provide the right protection for the right call, without adding extra bulk that weighs you down. Without the need for the heaviest materials, firefighters can choose PPE that breathes better and lets cool air circulate around the body. 

Regulating core body temperature is essential for reducing heat stress and fatigue, both of which can significantly impact a person’s cognitive function and reaction time. When body temperature rises, the body naturally cools itself through evaporative heat loss—but traditional turnout gear can trap sweat, preventing proper heat dissipation. 

One suit, many uses 

Not every emergency is a structure fire, and not every call should require hauling around full turnouts. In response, the market offers many multipurpose options like Fire-Dex’s TECGEN51 Multipurpose PPE. As a two-piece or coverall, it’s dual-certified to NFPA 1951 (technical rescue) and 1977 (wildland performance) for non-fire calls like MVAs, electrical issues and search and rescue missions—it’s lightweight, breathable and built to move. 

The reason is the TECGEN fiber, an inherently flame-resistant material with a high-density carbon shell and a flexible core. That combination provides increased durability over typical carbon-based fibers.

Most people don’t think twice about sweat, but firefighters don’t have that luxury. Battalion Chief Andy Starnes of Insight Training warns that wearing turnouts unnecessarily—especially in hot, humid conditions—can cause serious issues: “It makes managing moisture critical because drenched gear isn’t just annoying—it’s dangerous.

Exhaustion doesn’t happen all at once—it builds until every move in heavy, sweat-soaked gear feels like a fight. And that’s a cycle no firefighter wants to be stuck in.”

Beyond the materials, design choices affect the safety and useability of gear. For example, multipurpose PPE might feature a bi-wing back design in the jacket that improves shoulder and arm mobility, so it’s easier to climb and maneuver in tight spaces without feeling restricted.

As another example, a Mandarin-style collar with a throat closure might be used to prevent debris from getting inside the jacket, but without the bulk and discomfort of traditional collars. 

Even little changes can make a big difference. Pant legs, for instance, might seem a trivial consideration, but features like oversized legs with long zipper bottoms can make it much easier to pull the pants over your boots without struggling. In all cases, the goal is to help wearers stay focused on their gear instead of fighting it. 

With advances in alternative PPE across the fire industry, achieving the right level of protection and mobility without the strain of full turnouts is possible. Of course, for many fire departments, alternative PPE can seem like a large investment in an entirely new class of gear. The financials, however, are not to be feared. The use of multipurpose PPE can greatly extend the useful life of pricier turnouts by letting them hang out at the station when non-fire calls come in. Furthermore, manufacturers may bundle gear like turnouts, alternative PPE and accessories at a discount to customers. 

Firefighters give everything they’ve got to the job. Their gear should give just as much back. The latest PPE innovations can help keep them safer, cooler and more comfortable. Ask your specialist for a cost analysis—you could be looking at additional years before you need structural replacements again.

Documentary produced by Mark Ruffalo highlights dangers of PFAS in turnout gear

The IAFF hosted the world premiere of BURNED: Protecting the Protectors – a 30-minute documentary that details the dangers of PFAS in turnout gear – at the 2023 Affiliate Leadership Training Summit in Las Vegas. 

The film, produced by actor Mark Ruffalo, profiles Diane Cotter who suspected forever chemicals could be present in turnout gear after her husband, retired Worcester, MA Local 1009 fire fighter Paul Cotter, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in late 2014. She spent several years immersing herself in existing research while pursuing answers from scientists, corporations, and politicians. 

General President Edward Kelly said in the film: “We thought for years that our cancer was from absorbing the off gases from burning combustibles, building debris. We thought that was what was making us sick. We know now that our own gear is part of that problem.

“The very thing that was supposed to be keeping us safe was making us sick. We would not know that without fire fighters’ hero Diane Cotter.” 

Director Elijah Yetter-Bowman first met the Cotters while making GenX, a documentary about the PFAS public health crisis. As more research showed the dangers of PFAS in turnout gear, Yetter-Bowman decided to make a documentary educating fire fighters and the public about the critical issue. 

“No sensible person would require first responders to knowingly expose themselves to toxic materials as a requirement to do their jobs, but that’s exactly what has happened for decades,” said Yetter-Bowman. “Fire fighters need protective gear that will not poison them. With the IAFF leading the way, I believe we will get there rapidly.”
