BRNS Group maintains compliant fire safety through partnership with Amthal

What opportunities do you believe the fire alarm signalling sector is not fully utilising?

Could you elaborate on the cost effectiveness of the DualCom Pro and why this is generally an issue in the fire systems market?

The cost of EN54 approved signalling products has long been an issue in the fire industry. Monitored systems for fire systems are historically priced high and only available at dual path. Older EN54 certified signalling solutions were very expensive, meaning many installers could not justify the investment and leaving most fire systems having no monitoring at all – despite many fires occurring when the premises are empty.

DigiAir Pro Fire offers an ideal solution here, as a totally wireless, cost-effective, single path option. The wireless capabilities of DigiAir Pro Fire mean that no installation is limited by the infrastructure of the premises or the need for a wired connection. It is also a great option for upgrading non-monitored fire systems or futureproofing those that are using legacy communications like digis. How long was the process for the DualCom Pro – from concept, to finished certified product?

Our recent acquisitions of WebWay & Emizon helped to make it a reality. We took all the best parts of each product to create the DualCom Pro range. Work was already underway following Emizon joining the CSL Group in 2017. Once WebWay came on board in June 2018, the experts from across the three brands came together to deliver the leading product within 12 months – officially launching in July 2019. Shortly after this we attained the prestigious EN54 approval for Fire.

As with all product launches in our industry, the launch was staggered with rigorous beta and live trials to ensure optimum performance and on-site success. Since this moment, DualCom Pro has been utilised in over 10,000 installations across the UK and Ireland.

Do you have any predictions for the fire detection and alarms market?

Tougher legislation to mandate fire against insurance and help drive down false alarms would be welcomed. This legislation would need to come from the industry with involvement from government and trade bodies.

Huntingdon Fusion Techniques offers easy valve replacement with CO2 freezing

The Pipestoppers Division at Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT provides a cost saving solution to carrying out repairs or modifications on pipes with liquid inside, which also includes valve replacement.

Valve replacement challenges

Replacing valves in pipework can be a challenge, especially when the pipelines have liquids running through them. One option is to completely drain the system to make the repairs, which can prove costly, time consuming and problematical as to where to drain the liquid.

Georgia Gascoyne, CEO for HFT said: “Qwik-Freezer is the industry standard portable CO2 Pipe Freezing System, in use around the world, covering pipe diameters from 3/8” – 8” (9 – 200 mm). The quick and easy to use system requires very little set-up time and is the only CO2 Pipe Freezing System capable of freezing larger pipe diameters.”

HFT’s US Partner, COB Industries said: “When a sprinkler head has to be repaired or replaced in a large system, there are many issues that can arise. Draining large fire systems can create problems with disposal of all the water, more so when it is treated chemically with rust inhibitors and/or anti freeze. Environmental concerns prevent disposing of this water in a normal drainage system, even if it is possible to access one.

“Another issue with draining large systems is trapped air creating an air block in the lines. If there is no way to bleed the air from the system as it fills entire sections can remain empty and unusable. Both Pipe Freezing Systems, namely the Qwik-Freezer and the Accu-Freeze are used for fire sprinkler and valve maintenance. The ease of use makes the Qwik-Freezer System very popular for diameters up to 4” (although Qwik-Freezer is capable of freezing up to 8”).

“Larger pipe diameters and the use of anti-freeze and rust inhibitors can create freeze points that require the liquid nitrogen (LN2) temperatures of the Accu-Freeze System in order to create a pressure bearing freeze plug regardless of the pipe diameter.”

Once liquids have been brought to a standstill, a specially designed flexible jacket is wrapped around the pipe at each point where the freeze is required. A nozzle in the jacket is then coupled to a cylinder of liquid carbon dioxide for the Qwik-Freezer and liquid nitrogen for the Accu-Freeze.

For valve replacement, a second jacket is installed on the other side, creating a double freeze, blocking flow on both sides of the valve.

When the CO2/LN2 is injected into the space between the jacket and the pipe, the pipe contents freeze and a secure ‘ice plug’ is formed, which seals the pipe. The ‘ice plug’ forms only in the section of the pipe covered by the jacket, so the resulting rise in pressure is very small and there is no damage to the pipe itself. The technique can be used safely on iron, steel, lead, stainless steel, copper, brass and plastic pipe.

Fireco celebrates one millionth sale of Dorgard

Fireco is celebrating selling its one millionth Dorgard, a product which holds doors open and then automatically closes when it hears a fire alarm, following 25 years of success and a recent quick reaction to market needs during the pandemic.

The door retainer was designed to replace door wedges, which keep doors open but fail to protect the premises or people inside in case of fire.

Expanding the Fireco range

FIA contributes to vital cross-industry report

The FIA has contributed to a cross-industry report titled, ‘Setting the Bar: a new competence regime for building a safer future’. The new report is being described as a ‘blueprint to improve competence for those working on tall buildings and drive culture change.’

The FIA has worked alongside more than 150 likeminded organisations ranging from the fire and built environment industries, the social housing sector, commercial and residential management, facilities managers, health & safety practitioners, fire safety specialists and construction professionals.

The new report is the 2nd report from the Competence Steering Group and is an update of its interim report, Raising the Bar, published in August 2019. The work was initiated by the recommendations in Dame Judith Hackitt’s 2018 review Building a Safer Future, itself commissioned in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

Alongside the publishing of the Setting the Bar report, the Competency Steering Group has also published a separate report covering the new role of the building safety manager, Safer people, safer homes: Building Safety Management. The responsibilities of building designers, engineers, installers, building standards and others are all set down in different annexes to the main report.

The proposed system of competence set out in the Setting the Bar report is made up of four key elements:

  • a new competence committee sitting within the Building Safety Regulator
  • a national suite of competence standards – including new sector-specific frameworks developed by 12 working groups
  • arrangements for independent assessment and reassessment against the competence standards
  • a mechanism to ensure that those assessing and certifying people against the standards have appropriate levels of oversight.

CSG Chairman, Graham Watts, Chief Executive of the Construction Industry Council, said: “We would see higher-risk buildings as an essential starting point for the new competence frameworks for the whole of the built environment, which would result in a step-change across the sector and change of industry culture.”

Watts added: “There is no time to lose in casting aside the substandard practices that have shamed the industry. In this document, we have set a new bar and we would urge all those working in life-critical disciplines to attain these higher levels of competence. Only then can we rebuild the trust of those who occupy and live in the buildings we design, construct and manage.”

The CSG is urging Government to make mandatory the assessments against the frameworks for those working on higher-risk buildings and is calling on Government to take the lead by requiring that the competence framework set out within this report must be met by any company or individual working on any higher-risk building.

These competence frameworks set out the skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours required for specific roles, whilst this report touches on the requirement for a Building Safety Manager. It is equally important that the engineers who design, install, commission and maintain the fire safety systems are undertaking training to continue becoming more competent in their area of expertise.

In this position, she administered training to ensure company and regulatory policies were met and facilitated process development, documentation and technical leadership. She was also responsible for Fire and Life Safety components of planning and design, resolved issues during construction and ensured that codes, plans and standards were in compliance. Additionally, she developed new Passive Fire Protection and Life Safety Design Standards for hospitals, family health centres, ambulatory surgical centres and regional practice sites.

Her professional affiliations include the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and American Society for Healthcare Engineers (ASHE).

Reno also plays an integral role in industry codes and standards development. Her code development committee experience includes Principle Member of the Fundamentals Committee (NFPA 99 – Health Care Facilities Code), Healthcare Emergency Management and Security (NFPA 99 – Health Care Facilities Code) and an alternate on Board and Care Facilities (NFPA 5000 – Building Construction and Safety Code) and alternate on Board and Care Facilities (NFPA 101- Life Safety Code).

Why foam is the most suitable extinguishing agent for tank farm fires

Extinguishing monitor supplier, FireDos examines oil tank fire causes and incidents as well as how they can be extinguished efficiently and safely.

Tank farm fires in the oil and petrochemical industry do not occur often. When they do occur, it is with devastating consequences and negative publicity. This article will describe the typical incident scenarios and present foam as the most suitable extinguishing agent together with the firefighting equipment most used.

Most recently, several fires caused massive damage to tank farms, oil refineries and loading terminals. Prominent examples include the ITC tank farm at Deer Park, Texas, USA in March 2019 and the refinery fire at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA in February 2020.

Sadly, only news of this kind makes its way into the news, unlike near-miss accidents where improved fire protection technology has prevented worse outcomes. This means that both fire protection and extinguishing methods must be improved to minimise the effects of future fires. Fire protection systems in hazardous areas of the oil and gas industry (fire class B) require unique extinguishing systems as foam is considered the best extinguishing agent for liquid fires. The use of water can be important as well; however, for cooling the tank wall and adjacent tanks.

Luckily, such large-scale incidents do not happen frequently; but when they do, they may have a severe impact on humans, local eco-systems and the general environment. Extinguishing full-surface oil tank fires is very challenging and the rate of success is low. Many authorities and companies have not learned from such incidents, some of which can be disastrous.

Typical incidents

Rim Seal Fire: Rim seal fires occur on tanks with a floating cover. They can be extinguished quickly using stationary systems if they are detected early enough. A longer fire, however, may damage the seal and, hence, cause an excess release of oil. This may develop into an extensive fire. A seal failure releasing excess fluid, or excessive use of extinguishing fluid, may lead to sinking of the floating cover and eventually to a full surface fire.

Explosion: Transformation of explosive gases by an ignition source. This normally causes damage to stationary extinguishing systems and mobile systems must be used. In addition, an explosion usually results in spreading the flammable liquids and devastation of the adjacent areas and access roads.

Full-surface tank fire: If oil or petrochemical liquids escape, they gather on the floating roof. In the worst case, even a sinking of the floating roof can occur. If this surface catches fire, a full-surface tank fire develops rapidly. Fires on tanks with a floating roof can be extinguished either by stationary extinguishing systems from inside or by mobile extinguishing systems from outside the dyke area. In the case of fixed-roof tanks, only the internal stationary extinguishing systems can be used until the roof collapses.

Foam as an extinguishing agent

Foam has proven to be the best medium to extinguish fluid fires. Foam consists of the components; water, foam concentrate and air. The foam concentrate is mixed with the extinguishing water at a precisely defined rate. Air is then added to this premix to generate the foam. Depending on the foam concentrate and the quantity of air, different types of foam are produced to extinguish different types of fire.

Foam forms a homogenous layer of air bubbles, increasing the extinguishing agent’s volume and, hence, reducing its density. The foam floats on top of the flammable liquid and spreads across its surface. Due to this and its chemical properties, the foam blanket suppresses the release of flammable vapors, cuts off the supply of air and cools down the substance on fire. Consequent application of foam until fully covering the entire surface of the burning liquid will finally smother the fire.

Foam concentrates are developed for specific proportioning rates. The most common ones are 1% and 3%. Generally, a foam concentrate can form a stable and functioning foam only if it is mixed to the extinguishing water at no less than the correct proportioning rate. An increased proportioning rate will still form a stable and functioning foam; however, the foam concentrate stored will be used up faster. A proportioning rate falling short will produce a foam which is unable to develop its full extinguishing power.

Bladder tank with proportioner

The bladder tank with a proportioner is a proven and cost-effective technology. The bladder tank is a pressurised vessel with a bladder inside which is filled with foam concentrate. The tank is pressurised with water from the fire extinguishing line and discharges the foam concentrate from the bladder as required. The bladder is connected to a proportioner which operates using the venturi principle. When the fire pumps are activated, pressure is generated by the pump, causing delivery of foam concentrate to the proportioner. The extinguishing water flows through the venturi proportioner. The resulting vacuum induces the foam concentrate into the extinguishing water flow.

The advantages of this system are its simple design without moving parts and its easy operation. No external energy is required and the system is relatively inexpensive.

A disadvantage is that the system is a pressurised vessel subject to corresponding regulations such as ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Codes. To refill foam concentrate, the system must be shut down and drained. The rubber bladder is sensitive; when damaged, water will contaminate the foam concentrate. At a given proportioning rate, the system is only suitable for low variations in the extinguishing water flow pressure and volume. Adding or changing individual foam discharge devices is possible only to a very limited extent. The system is also unsuitable for proportioning highly viscous foam concentrates.

To conduct any mandatory required annual testing, the system must be activated and premix generated at the venturi proportioner within in the extinguishing water line. The correct proportioning rate must be measured in the premix by laboratory analysis. The generated premix must be disposed of. The consumed foam concentrate in the bladder tank needs to be replaced.

Firefighting monitors

Firefighting monitors are discharge devices mounted on vehicles or trailers and available in many sizes. The extinguishing agent flow rate can be up to 60,000 l/min and the reach can be up to 180m if the pressure of the fire pumps is sufficient. They are suitable to discharge foam, e.g., to extinguish a surface fire in a tank; or water, to cool down a neighbouring tank or the tank wall of a burning tank in order to prevent reaching the critical temperature for a boilover or to keep the flames from spreading. The accumulation of water inside the dyke area should always be observed to avoid an overflow of the dyke.

Mobile fire monitors can be supplied either by the extinguishing water of the stationary fire pumps or by mobile pumps. The injection of the foam concentrate usually takes place via mobile proportioners. This clearly points towards the advantage of energy independence for water motor-driven proportioning pumps.

It seems that many authorities and companies have not learned the necessary lessons from disastrous fire incidents of past years. Tank farm fires in the oil and petrochemical industry do not happen frequently. When they do, they usually have devastating consequences. Let us remember the tank farm fire at Deer Park, Texas in March 2019 mentioned in the introduction.

The fire developed after over 30,000 l butane-enriched naphtha had been leaking from a faulty valve for 30 minutes and caught fire for yet unknown reasons. The plant had no gas warning system and no remote-controlled valves to shut off the leaking fluid. In addition, some areas did not have fixed extinguishing systems installed. All 15 tanks were surrounded by one single dyke. The owner had relied on the local fire service which was on the spot very quickly but could not take control over the fire with the equipment available, partially because flammable substance was continuously leaking from the tank.

It is very probable that the fire would have been extinguished quickly if the warning systems and valves had worked and a fixed fire extinguishing system had existed. It is also probable that the fire would have been extinguished quickly if the extinguishing operation, which succeeded eventually, had been started earlier. Both cases would have resulted in notably less damage.

Exclusive: Open plan layout fire protection

Managing Director of Coopers Fire, David Cerquella, explains the growing importance of fire curtain specification and which considerations need to be made by architects and building engineers alike.

Offering users flexibility and freedom to alter a space as necessary, it is no wonder that the popularity of open plan layouts has increased. There are multiple benefits to the creation of large open spaces, including significant energy savings due to more natural light and a more social, collaborative environment for offices, due to the lack of dividing walls.

Unfortunately, should a fire break out in an open plan environment, the spread of smoke and flames is much more rapid than in a smaller or compartmented area. The most severe risk to occupants in a fire is excessive inhalation of gas, smoke or toxic fumes which can be reduced by containing the spread of fire and protecting evacuation routes with implementation of fire-resistant barriers into a building’s design.

There are numerous reasons for creating an open plan building design and many examples that use such spaces. Those involved in the events industry, for example, will utilise a range of open spaces, whether it be for exhibitions or networking. In offices, a shift to flexible working patterns and a growing preference for the ability to rearrange office desks and other furniture have contributed to more open plan office environments.

Active and passive fire protection

As mentioned, the spread of fire in these spaces could be increased by the lack of physical barriers. Therefore, active fire protection such as smoke alarms and sprinkler systems should be used in conjunction with passive fire protection like fire doors and fire curtain systems to ensure compliance to fire regulations and offer maximum levels of safety in the event of a fire. The issues highlighted with open plan layouts need to be addressed for a building to adhere to Approved Document B.

The curtain falls

To prevent the spread of fire, a building must be divided into compartments, which are marked by the implementation of fire-resistant barriers, such as fire doors and curtains. Open plan spaces pose specific challenges because it is impossible to utilise fire doors, due to the absence of walls. Where fire doors cannot be implemented, fire curtains may be installed.

The main purpose of a fire-resistant barrier, such as curtains, is to suppress the growth and development of flames and smoke within a building, to protect escape routes and help minimise the risk to human life. Open spaces and critical escape routes can utilise fire curtains to control the spread of smoke and fire, which could spread more rapidly, for example through a lift shaft.

A fire curtain is a highly robust piece of fire-resistant material which is stored discretely in a steel headbox within the ceiling. In the event of a fire, the curtain is released by a trigger from a fire alarm or local detector, causing it to fall vertically via gravity. Once deployed, it obscures the space, acting as a crucial physical barrier between the fire and the escape routes. Fire curtains can be installed in several different locations and can be used to replace a non-load bearing wall and fire rated glazing. In open plan layouts, the installation of a fire curtain enables a building to still meet the relevant regulations.

There is a growing global demand for the ability to see through a fire barrier. Therefore, where a fire curtain is installed in place of a door, a vision panel could be extremely beneficial. In an emergency, first responders are required to evacuate individuals from a building, therefore, fire curtains with a vision panel are likely to be a huge aid to first responders. Adding a window-like panel into the curtain, means that once a fire curtain is deployed, first responders are able to identify flames and smoke and the associated risks on the other side, which could potentially save precious time in an evacuation.

Certification and integrity

With the help of certification and testing, a fire curtain is designed to withstand the heat and effects of a fire for a specific length of time. The required duration of resistance is specified to enable an effective evacuation with enough time to make the necessary checks of the building, in order to minimise the risk to human life.

For the fire curtain industry, BS 8524 is the only fire curtain standard, providing comprehensive guidance on specification and installation. Aimed at specifiers, manufacturers, installers and facilities managers, the standard covers all aspects of the fire curtain performance and functionality, as well as a third party approved installation and ongoing maintenance of the fire curtain, which must be achieved to illustrate competence and quality.

A key part of BS 8524 and one of the essential nine annexes is the fire test, BS EN 1634-1. This is an important test standard to look for in terms of compliance and product fire resistance or integrity (E). With integrity of components used in building construction facing increased scrutiny, there is a higher degree of focus on the integrity of every product when exposed to fire. This certification provides assurance to end users and building occupiers that the product has been subject to, and passed, thorough third-party testing against a set of rigorous criteria.

The benefits of having a vision panel in fire-resistant barriers are clear. However, where they appear in curtains there must be no compromise on compliance, quality and the product’s resistance level. Choosing products that are certified and have undergone thorough testing, provides assurance to specifiers and facilities managers that the fire protection measures in place are of the highest standard to preserve human life.
