2020 was a challenging year for fire departments. As the COVID-19 pandemic raged, the west also experienced a severe wildfire season. To assist volunteer firefighters that were on the frontlines of the wildfires, ADT provided $10,000 donations to five fire departments in the western U.S.

ADT is a longtime partner of the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) and reached out to the organisation to help identify fire departments in need. This is the third year that ADT and the NVFC have partnered during the holiday season to recognise and reward volunteer firefighters with donations to departments.

ADT ‘pleased to recognise departments’

“We commend ADT for giving back to the volunteer firefighters who protect our communities from all kinds of hazards,” said NVFC chair Steve Hirsch. “The five departments that received donations had a challenging time in 2020 due to both the pandemic and wildfires. These donations provided by ADT will help them overcome these challenges and move forward so they can be there when their communities call.”

“ADT is pleased to recognise these volunteer departments which serve as the front line of defense in their communities,” said Bob Tucker, ADT director of corporate affairs. “We hope these funds will help these brave firefighters continue to save lives and protect property.”

The five recipients of the $10,000 grants are as follows:

Coolin-Cavanaugh Bay (ID) Fire Protection District: COVID-19 prevented the department from holding its annual fundraisers, which meant a possible reduction in service. The donation will enable the department to meet the budget shortfall and continue to provide full protection to residents.

Grand Fire Protection District No. 1 (Granby, CO): The donation recognises the work of the volunteer firefighters who fought wildfires that destroyed land and property, including firefighters’ homes. Read more.

Malden (WA) Fire Department: The fire station and 80 percent of the town’s buildings were destroyed by wildfire in September. The contribution will help rebuild the fire station. Read more.

McKenzie Fire/Rescue (Leaburg, OR): The donation recognised the tireless work of the department’s volunteer firefighters to contain a massive wildfire that destroyed over 37,000 acres and hundreds of buildings, including some of the firefighters’ homes.

Turlock (CA) Rural Fire Department: Thanks to the donation, the department will be able to buy new hydraulic tools to rescue victims from vehicle accidents, after an existing unit recently failed and needed to be replaced. Read more.

In addition to these donations and partnership with the NVFC, ADT regularly gives back to the first responder agencies who answer the call when alerted to home emergencies. The ADT LifeSaver program has donated over $550,000 to first responder agencies, including volunteer fire departments.

Telstra and Motorola Solutions will provide Tasmania’s emergency responders and government organisations with a highly advanced, state-wide mission critical communications network to effectively respond to emergencies.

The contract to design, build, operate and maintain Tasmania’s Government Radio Network (TasGRN) will provide enhanced digital communication and vastly improved radio network coverage for Tasmania’s public safety and essential services personnel throughout the state.

The innovative network will be built on a feature-rich technology platform to provide a variety of additional capabilities for today and the future. These include broadband push-to-talk services enabling seamless communication between radios, smartphones and other devices as well as enhanced integration between existing communication centres’ operating systems and Motorola Solutions’ consoles.

In delivering the contract, Telstra will draw on its extensive experience in delivering wireless communications services and managing radio systems for public safety agencies.

Telstra Enterprise Executive Gretchen Cooke said “TasGRN will be the largest single project Telstra has ever carried out in Tasmania and will transform the way government agencies communicate.”

“This new radio network will be more reliable, more resilient, more secure and will replace five separate systems so Tasmania’s emergency services can communicate with confidence to help keep Tasmanians safe,” Ms Cooke said. 

“The new communications service will enable Tasmania’s emergency services to manage increasingly complex operational requirements – from combating natural disasters, to dealing with the evolving security landscape and beyond,” said Con Balaskas, vice president Motorola Solutions Australia and New Zealand.

“In addition to instant and interoperable communications across multiple government organisations, the contract will provide managed services to keep all of TasGRN’s critical technology, infrastructure and features up to date.

“Our involvement in this significant project for Tasmania demonstrates our commitment to ensuring the highest levels of safety for communities as well as the emergency responders that put their lives on the line every day to protect them,” Balaskas said.

The Government Radio Network will be constructed over the next three years with associated services running over 12 years.

In addition to TasGRN, Telstra and Motorola Solutions have delivered many successful public safety projects throughout Australia. This includes designing, building, operating and maintaining Queensland’s Government Wireless Network and partnering to deliver a number of communications networks and services for Victorian public safety agencies.

Global safety equipment manufacturer MSA Safety Incorporated (NYSE: MSA) have announced the donation of 300 Advantage elastomeric
half-mask respirators (EHMRs) and 600 sets of P-100 filter cartridges to COVID Courage, a New York City-based non-profit organisation focused on supplying NYC healthcare providers with adequate personal protective equipment (PPE).

By design, elastomeric half-mask respirators are tight-fitting reusable respirators that cover a wearer’s nose and mouth and utilise twin filters to provide respiratory protection. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that NIOSH-approved respirators, including MSA’s Advantage line of EHMRs, are appropriate for use against SARSCoV-2 in healthcare settings.

This established class of respirator can play a critical role in the nation’s response to COVID-19 and, importantly, bolster future readiness for similar microbial viruses and other emergencies. “All of us at MSA appreciate and are grateful for the efforts of COVID Courage to get PPE into the hands of those who need it now, particularly given the current resurgence of COVID-19,” said Steve Blanco, President of MSA’s Americas business segment.

Mr. Blanco noted that elastomeric respirators can play a critical role in easing PPE insecurity because of their ability to be cleaned, disinfected and reused. In addition, studies show that the strategic incorporation of EHMRs into a respiratory protection program can lead to lower usage costs as well as reduced warehousing needs and fewer product expiration concerns.

The connection between MSA and Covid Courage was made by SecondMuse, an impact innovation firm working to connect PPE manufacturers to front line workers. COVID Courage has distributed the MSA respirators to The Brooklyn Hospital Center (TBHC) and has
purchased an additional 100 MSA EHMRs for use in the same facility, enabling TBHC to reach their goal of protecting 1,000 frontline healthcare workers with reusable masks.

Sutphen Corporation, the largest family-owned fire apparatus manufacturer in the U.S, has added a 36-inch custom cab length to its product line up. The 130-year-old business now offers four different custom cab length options.

Measuring 36 inches from the center of the front wheel well to the end of the cab, the new two-door custom cab option allows departments the opportunity to reduce unused cab space while remaining in Sutphen’s renown custom cab and chassis. Sutphen now offers 36-inch, 56-inch, 62-inch and 73-inch cab length options, all of which are placed on the family-owned business’s renown Monarch extreme-duty chassis.

“This new cab is a testament to our innovative spirit,” said Zach Rudy, Sutphen’s director of sales and marketing. “As one of the core principles and driving factors of our business, this new cab option opens the door for customers who may need to reduce travel size or only use two-firefighter crews.”

Sutphen’s first 36-inch cab was designed and manufactured as an air and light truck for the Greensboro Fire Department in Greensboro, North Carolina.

“It does more than just fill bottles on calls,” said Eric Campbell a Greensboro Fire Department engineer. “It provides supplies for rehab; it also provides supplies for the guys whenever they’re done with a fire to clean their gear.”

Campbell continued by saying the truck only has one person assigned for each 24-hour shift, so the department doesn’t need room for extra people. With the extra room provided by the two-door cab, the truck is a catch-all and prepared for any situation the department may face.

“After speaking with the Greensboro Fire Department and understanding their needs and wants, we were able to work with them to provide this new two-door custom cab,” said Justin Howell, Sutphen’s senior sales territory manager. “It is a first for Sutphen, but as a long-time customer, the Greensboro Fire Department trusted us to provide them with their exact needs and wants. We thank them for their trust in our process, our engineering and our innovation.”

The chassis is complete with Sutphen’s cathacoated 10” double frame rails, a 214 ¼-inch wheelbase, an exterior cab compartment for the driver’s gear, Sutphen’s classic Federal Q2B in the center of the grille and more.

The body of the truck was built through Sutphen’s partnership with SVI Trucks. The two engineering departments worked closely together to create the best possible apparatus for the department.

The body is complete with a 40KW generator, a 7,000 PSI Bauer air compressor, two double bottle cascade fill stations, a recessed light tower on top of the body, three electric retractable awnings and 55 individual SCBA bottle holders.
