NFPA reveals rise in fatal firefighter injuries in the US during 2022

The highest number of fatal firefighter injuries recorded since 2013, according to the NFPA

In their most recent report, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) revealed a significant increase in fatal firefighter injuries in the US for the year 2022. According to the report, a total of 96 fatal firefighter injuries occurred while on-duty, the highest count since 2013. This marked increase is primarily attributed to the inclusion of deaths occurring within the first 24 hours post-duty, which were not previously counted without a specific physical complaint while on duty.

Understanding the nature and cause of fatal injuries

The report provides comprehensive statistics from the NFPA’s study on on-duty firefighter fatalities in 2022. It offers insights into patterns by type of duty at the time of fatal injury, the cause and nature of injuries, age of victims, types of incidents, and the kind of properties involved in fires.

Key findings from the report include the following: Of the 96 fatalities, 51 were volunteer firefighters, 38 were career firefighters, six were contractors to state and federal land management agencies, and one was a full-time federal land management employee. There were six incidents with multiple fatalities, matching the highest number of such incidents since 2009. The majority of deaths happened on the fireground while firefighters were dealing with fires or explosions. Twenty-one fatalities happened while firefighters were either responding to or returning from alarms. Overexertion and stress were responsible for just over half of the deaths. Fourteen firefighters died in vehicle crashes.

Historic firefighter cancer legislation approved in Canada

Parliament unanimously passes significant legislation for occupational cancer in firefighters

In a momentous move, Canada’s Parliament has unanimously passed historic legislation, Bill C-224, creating a national framework to address the occupational cancer faced by firefighters. The legislation was developed in association with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), a substantial victory for them and their Canadian affiliates.

Supporting cancer research and establishing Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month

The newly passed legislation proposes a range of measures intended to actively bolster research, education, cancer screenings, and knowledge dissemination. This support aims to enhance the scope of occupational cancer coverage at a provincial level and ensures fair compensation and assistance for firefighters diagnosed with the disease. Additionally, the law designates January as Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month in Canada.

Legislation receives unanimous support from all parties

Montréal-area Liberal MP Sherry Romanado introduced the bill in January 2022, which was supported unanimously throughout the legislative process by all parties. The IAFF collaborated with Romanado, helping the bill through multiple House of Commons and Senate votes as well as two sets of committee hearings.

Notable figures recognise the importance of the legislation

Edward Kelly, General President of the IAFF, celebrated the passage of the bill, describing it as a significant stride in combating cancer, the leading cause of firefighter fatalities in Canada and the United States. Kelly thanked MP Romanado for proposing the bill, Senator Hassan Yussuff for championing it in the Senate, and Conservative Senator David Wells for his early endorsement. Montréal Local 125 President Chris Ross was also acknowledged, whose friendship with Romanado influenced her decision to develop the legislation. Kelly was quoted saying: “This historic legislation is a critical step forward in our fight against cancer and the toll it has taken on our members.”

Firsthand experiences inspire action

Sherry Romanado, whose father and husband were firefighters, acknowledged the lengthy process to get her bill approved but expressed pride in contributing to the protection of those in the profession. She stated: “Like I said many times before, they are always there for us, and we had the obligation to also be there for them.”

Next steps and historical efforts

Following the enactment of the legislation, Health Canada officials have already scheduled meetings with the IAFF to commence work on the national framework. It is worth noting the previous significant achievement by the IAFF in 2018, when the Canadian Government, following a 25-year lobby by the IAFF, established the Memorial Grant Program for First Responders. This program provides a $300,000 payment to the families of firefighters who lose their lives in the line of duty, including those who succumb to recognised occupational illnesses such as cancer.

Since the establishment of this benefit, the families of 278 Canadian IAFF members who have died in the line of duty have received a total of $83.4 million. In the past decade, 431 Canadian IAFF members have succumbed to recognised occupational cancers.

Structure, functions and benefits

All these values are observed through the Internet of Things (IoT) interface and the collected data is reported. In this way, the reported values make the efficiency of the installation measurable. The data can be analysed and even the flow, position and energy values can be changed with the analysed results.

It measures energy use thanks to the “Q = mC△T” calculation. By observing the behavior of the heat source, it determines the optimum energy requirement in the system. Thus, it ensures efficient use of energy. The Smart Valve maintains the correct flow despite pressure variations. Flow variability occurs when the variability in the actuator position changes only when the demand requirements change or when it is outside the “△T” set point. It is used in the HVAC industry as a solution for unstable systems with optimisation problems.

The Smart Valve is designed to meet the needs of the installation system. Thanks to its integrated compact structure, it observes the status of the installation. Thanks to the data collected through observations, it ensures efficient operation of the system and prevents unnecessary energy consumption.

System components

The system consists of a combination of five main components: DN050 Ultrasonic Calorimeter, Proportional / On-Off Electric Actuator, V-port Two-Piece DN050 Ball Valve, PT1000 Temperature Sensors (△T measurement), and a Differential Pressure Sensor.

As a solution, where a Smart Valve is used, by monitoring the low △T Syndrome and the temperature difference, the valve tries to keep △T at the highest possible value or at the value set on the interface thanks to the IoT platform by observing the temperature difference. It increases the △T value by reducing the flow rate of the excessive amount of water that is continuously pumped into the system.

This saves energy as the pump does not run continuously at full speed and provides comfort as the system runs more efficiently. It fulfills its functions not only in heating applications but also in cooling applications.

Thanks to its ability to reduce energy costs, the Smart Valve has become the darling of the HVAC sector due to its single structure (Combined Valve + Calorimeter + Shut-off Valve) and the possibility of observing and intervening with the IoT interface.

Smart Valve position scenario

It can see the position of the valve on the IoT interface. If necessary, the position of the valve can be adjusted within the limit values.

Flow scenario

Thanks to the ultrasonic sensors on it, it provides the opportunity to measure the flow rate. This flow rate can be seen on the IoT interface. If necessary, the required flow rate can be provided to the system by adjusting the flow rate.

Pressure scenario

Smart Valve performs delta P(△P) pressure difference measurement. These measurements can be monitored on the interface. The impurities accumulated in the installation system over time will affect the pressure loss of the system. To eliminate this negative effect by continuously reading the pressure values in a cycle, the problem of pollution accumulated in the installation is eliminated by alerting other peripherals.

In the installation example given above, the particles accumulated with a strainer can be monitored with the Smart Valve. When the pressure amount increases, it gives a warning to the system and the accumulated pollution is removed with the help of an actuator until the pressure value reaches the normal value.

Removal of impurities plays an important role for the long life of the installation.

Delta – T(△T) scenario

With the Smart Valve, △T is measured thanks to the temperature sensors on it. The △T limit value can be changed and the valve now regulates its behavior according to the set value. It automatically adjusts the flow rate so that only the amount of water required to achieve the desired power is used. It prevents the formation of low △T.

Energy scenario

Thanks to the Ultrasonic Calorimeter, the Smart Valve can calculate energy. It can observe this value on the IoT platform. If necessary, a fixed energy value can be entered. Thus, the valve changes its behavior and performs its functions at the set energy value.

IoT interface

It is simpler and more effective to use the Smart Valve’s options more efficiently and to meet the requirements with the IoT interface that contains all the data to observe and optimise to meet the needs in the system.

Maintenance period

The valve must be maintained to preserve its functions. Logically, the valve can predict the maintenance time by observing its own condition and gives an alarm.

Alarms

When the Smart Valve exceeds the values set in the scenarios or when the electrical signal is interrupted, the alarm scenario is activated. Thanks to the warning system, it provides the opportunity for early intervention to communicate the problems that occur, to prevent these problems from progressing further and to protect the functions of the installation system.

Drag and drop feature

In the IoT interface, the installation architecture can be set up and the values provided by the Smart Valve can be observed and the simulation of the installation can be provided through the interface.

Virginia Beach’s Jessica Xenakis crowned Fire Safety Educator of the Year

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) honoured Jessica Xenakis, Fire and Life Safety Education Coordinator for the Virginia Beach Fire Department, with the Fire Prevention and Life Safety Educator of the Year Award for 2023.

As a prominent figure in her field, Xenakis received recognition for her innovative “Safety Squad” programme and the successful launch of a comprehensive virtual learning resource, www.vbfdlifesafety.com. Her exceptional efforts in implementing fire safety education within the community earned her this notable honour, which is awarded annually to a dedicated educator.

Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki secures James M. Shannon Advocacy Medal 2023

Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki was also recognised at the gala for his unwavering commitment to fire safety and loss reduction. His substantial contributions in this area earned him the prestigious James M. Shannon Advocacy Medal for 2023. Siarnicki’s advocacy initiatives, including the establishment of the Everyone Goes Home Programme and his impactful leadership at the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, have made a remarkable impact on fire safety.

Daniel O’Connor bestowed with NFPA’s highest honour

Daniel O’Connor, a technical fellow at Jensen Hughes, was awarded the coveted Standards Medal at the event. This distinction, the highest given by the NFPA Standards Council, honours outstanding contributions to fire safety and NFPA codes and standards. O’Connor’s significant contributions and his extensive 43-year career as a consulting fire protection engineer highlight the reasons for this honour.

Fire Protection Research Foundation Medal and Harry C. Bigglestone Award winners announced

In addition to the individual accolades, a group of fire and life safety experts were honoured with the Fire Protection Research Foundation Medal. The medal recognises projects that best reflect the fire safety mission, commitment to addressing technical challenges, and successful collaboration. The 2023 medal was awarded for the project titled “Firefighting Foams: A Fire Service Roadmap.” This significant project, funded by a DHS/FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant, aimed to guide the fire service community during its transition to fluorine-free firefighting foam.

The winners of the Fire Protection Research Foundation Medal were Jerry Back, a fire protection engineer from Jensen Hughes, Casey Grant, the executive director of DSRAE, LLC, Edward Hawthorne, a global emergency manager and consultant, and Noah Lieb, a subject matter expert at Jensen Hughes. Each of these individuals demonstrated unwavering dedication to research, development, and innovation, contributing significantly to fire safety standards and practices.

Meanwhile, the Harry C. Bigglestone Award was presented for a paper titled “Experimental Study of the Fire Dynamics in a Semi-enclosure Formed by Photovoltaic (PV) Installations on Flat Roof Constructions.” This award annually recognises the paper in Fire Technology that best encapsulates excellence in communicating fire protection concepts. The authors of the paper, Jens Kristensen, Benjamin Jacobs, and Grunde Jomaas, have made critical contributions to fire safety research, particularly regarding the transition to renewable energy.

Their work provides valuable insights into the fire dynamics of photovoltaic systems on flat roof constructions, contributing to the ongoing discussion of fire-safe, sustainable environmental practices. These recognitions underscore the importance of research and technological development in enhancing fire safety standards.

Dr. James Milke Receives 2023 Distinguished Service Award

Lastly, the NFPA presented Dr. James Milke with the 2023 Distinguished Service Award. As a Professor and Chair of the Department of Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland, Milke’s significant contributions in promoting fire safety and advancing NFPA’s mission were lauded. This prestigious honour is a testament to Dr. Milke’s lifelong dedication to fire safety.
