The smoke detector spacing challenge on high ceilings

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is hosting an upcoming webinar addressing an often overlooked issue in fire safety: smoke detector placement on high ceilings. For those keen to join, you can sign up for the webinar here.

While the NFPA 72, a prominent fire alarm and signalling code, does not address smoke detection spacing considerations based on ceiling heights, it does provide a table for the reduction of spacing for heat detection.

This leaves some ambiguity in design and code enforcement when installing smoke detectors on ceilings higher than 10 feet.

The 2017 smoke detector spacing study and its findings

A literature review and gap analysis on smoke detectors in high-ceiling spaces were published by the Fire Protection Research Foundation in 2017.

The study showed that there were limited context and significant knowledge gaps, which precluded the formulation of scientifically justified prescriptive requirements regarding smoke detector spacing relative to ceiling height.

Working towards better understanding smoke detector performance on high ceilings

This study proposed a way forward to improve the characterisation of smoke detector spacing in high ceilings.

For example, it recommended establishing a performance metric for smoke detectors that could be applied to high ceilings.

The fire protection industry is in need of additional information about the impact of ceiling height and detector spacing on smoke detection performance.

Mishuk Datta, Lead Engineer at Jensen Hughes, will discuss these considerations for smoke detection based on ceiling heights and the necessary areas where further knowledge is needed.

Embarking from the Port Hamble Marina in Portsmouth, the event brought together ASFP staff and members for a unique day of team-building at sea.

The day culminated with a thrilling race where 12 yachts competed for the prestigious ASFP Regatta Challenge Cup Trophy.

Corrosion Resistant Products excel in the Regatta Challenge

This year’s Regatta Challenge saw intense competition, with the Corrosion Resistant Products yacht emerging victorious.

Securing the second spot was a yacht crewed by members and guests from Consort Insurance, R Lewis, Revolutionary Systems and Remote Monitoring.

A team comprising members from Minster, DHA Firestopping and Promat managed to secure the third position.

ASFP Regatta Challenge: a day of sail training and team-building

The eventful day started with a round of introductions before the seven-member teams boarded their Oceanis 37 yachts.

The morning was devoted to intensive sail training, teaching the participants the importance of teamwork under the guidance of each boat’s dedicated skipper.

FeuerTrutz: A vibrant gathering in Nuremberg

The FeuerTrutz 2023 event, held in Nuremberg, witnessed an impressive turnout, attracting over 5,500 trade visitors and delegates from 38 countries, marking a surge of over 30% from the previous year.

The two-day fair, with a total of 247 exhibitors showcasing pioneering solutions for passive, active and organisational fire protection, was noted for its excellent atmosphere.

Among the new features introduced this year, the forum on digitisation and the forum hosted by Asecos Academy received high acclaim.

Among the attractions, live explosions and chemical reactions at the Asecos Academy forum and a talk session on “Failure of critical infrastructure” engaged significant visitor attention.

The forum “A practical guide to digitization” offered a platform to gain a practical understanding of digitalisation for trade businesses, with 20 live interviews conducted over the course of the event.

NFPA CEO advocates for embracing digital transformation and updated safety measures

In a compelling address at the General Session of the annual NFPA Conference and Expo held in Las Vegas, Jim Pauley, President and CEO of the NFPA, advocated for the adoption of digital transformation and the evolution of safety measures to keep pace with an increasingly dynamic world.

Digital transformation, a driving force for industry change

Addressing a diverse gathering from across the United States and over 60 countries, Pauley elaborated on the dramatic effect of digital transformation on everyday tasks: “It is necessary to adapt to these changes to create value for users, improve efficiency, and achieve better outcomes.” He pointed out the facts: this year, digital transformation initiatives are forecasted to generate $2.3 trillion in spending, with nine out of ten executives agreeing that it will profoundly transform their sectors.

The urgency for advanced safety measures

In his address, Pauley also emphasised the need for heightened safety measures to complement emerging technologies. His specific references included lithium-ion batteries, which power a wide range of devices and extensive energy storage systems globally. He recalled unfortunate incidents and acknowledged the NFPA’s role in reducing such risks by creating standards, training experts, and spearheading research.

Pauley shone a spotlight on the ongoing threats of domestic and wildfires, reporting a rising trend in home fire fatalities over the past ten years, and reminding us that around 75% of fire deaths occur in homes: “There is a clear need for the installation of functioning smoke alarms and sprinklers.” He also highlighted the NFPA Fire and Life Safety Ecosystem’s role in promoting this and spoke about the association’s Outthink Wildfire initiative, which advocates for stronger policy measures in areas vulnerable to wildfires.

NFPA’s strides in digital evolution

Pauley outlined the NFPA’s digital progression, focusing on the growth of their main digital platform, NFPA LiNK. This platform, home to nearly 1500 of the NFPA’s codes and standards translated into multiple languages, offers instantaneous access to safety regulations and has grown exponentially since its inception: “It aids companies, government bodies, and individuals alike in their journey towards digital transformation.”

The CEO highlighted the NFPA’s digital efforts in their training and certification programmes, citing the provision of more than 300 online courses and the introduction of an augmented reality learning experience for wildfire mitigation. The NFPA’s online training programme for electric vehicles has now reached over three hundred thousand first responders.

Lastly, Pauley announced a comprehensive update to the NFPA website, due to provide a smooth, user-friendly experience with improved search functions and a built-in translation platform when it becomes operational later this summer. He encouraged attendees to provide feedback on the new site at the NFPA stand at the Expo.

New Board elected at annual meeting of Metro Fire Chiefs Association

On June 4-8, 2023, over 130 fire chiefs from across the globe assembled in Columbus, Ohio for the annual Metro Fire Chiefs Association meeting. Chiefs from countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Guatemala, and Mexico, gathered to elect the Association’s 2023-2024 officers and board members.

New officers and board members

The meeting saw the election of several officials:

  • Edward “Loy” Senter Jr., was elected president, hailing from Chesterfield County, Virginia Fire & Emergency Medical Services.
  • Ernest Malone from the Indianapolis, Indiana Fire Department was elected vice president.
  • The Fairfax County, Virginia Fire Rescue Department’s John Butler was elected as secretary.
  • Trisha Wolford from Anne Arundel County, Maryland Fire Department was chosen as the treasurer.
  • The board welcomed new members including Steve Dongworth, Calgary, Alberta Fire Department; William Bryson (retired), City of Miami, Florida Fire Department; Samuel Peña, Houston, Texas Fire Department; and Robert Rocha (retired), Corpus Christi, Texas Fire Department.

Don Lombardi, the outgoing Metro Board member, issued the oath of office to the new officers and board members.

2023 Metro awards and honours

Several commendations and awards were also given:

  • Fire Chief of the Year was awarded to Chief Samuel Peña of the Houston, Texas Fire Department.

The event is a comprehensive gathering of top industry professionals, who will participate in over 110 educational sessions discussing recent developments, challenges, and trends in fire, electrical, and life safety.

The Expo, showcasing more than 300 exhibitors, will provide a platform for attendees to explore the latest products and services essential for ensuring and maintaining compliance with relevant codes and standards in the creation and operation of all types of buildings and facilities. The event will be punctuated by pavilions, presentations, and special events focusing on diverse areas like electrical safety, emerging technologies, and community risk reduction (CRR), among others.

The NFPA will also host the Spotlight on Public Education (SOPE) on June 19-20, shedding light on various public education topics such as fire prevention programs for various age groups, the effectiveness of community partnerships, and CRR strategies to enhance community-wide impact.

Following the conference, the NFPA Technical Meeting will commence on June 22, providing an opportunity for NFPA members and the general public to voice their views on each certified amending motion (CAM). The Keynote Speaker

Dr. Albert Manero, the Co-Founder of Limbitless Solutions and an engineer by profession, has dedicated his life to effect global change through the power of creativity, inclusion, and empathy. His nonprofit organisation, Limbitless Solutions, aims to make 3-D printed bionic prosthetic limbs accessible to all, with a special focus on children, veterans, and first responders.

As a Fulbright Scholar and a graduate student at the University of Central Florida, Dr. Manero was inspired to establish Limbitless Solutions after learning about the high costs of prosthetic limbs. Within a year of its founding, the organisation had developed and donated its first prosthetic arm, garnering widespread attention and support, including from Microsoft’s The Collective Project and actor Robert Downey Jr.

His team’s innovative work extends beyond prosthetics to include projects like a jaw and facial muscle-controlled wheelchair for those diagnosed with ALS, quadriplegia, and spinal cord injuries, and the use of video game technology in stroke rehabilitation. 2023 Technical Meeting

In a critical update, the 2023 Technical Meeting is announced to be a single-day event, a change that’s attributed to the number of Notice of Intent to Make a Motion (NITMAMs) received for the Annual 2023 standards. This intensive session will take place on Thursday, June 22nd, with a start time of 8:00am. The meeting will commence with the presentation of Committee Service and Special Achievement Awards, recognising outstanding contributions in the field.

Following the awards ceremony, a concentrated session of debate and presentation of certified amending motions will take place. All Certified Amending Motions, as recorded in the final Motions Committee Report, are set to be discussed and finalised within this single day. The complete agenda and the sequence of the certified amending motions will be posted on the official website, with the final details expected to be available on or before June 8, 2023.

On the agenda

The 2023 NFPA Conference and Expo is set to be a platform for engaging presentations and discussions on a wide range of topics related to alternative fuels. Attendees can look forward to sessions covering chemical and industrial aspects, codes and standards, community risk reduction strategies, and data collection, management, and utilization practices. Design and engineering considerations, along with detection and notification technologies, will be explored in detail.

Electrical safety and emergency preparedness will also take centre stage, alongside discussions on emerging technologies and issues. Energy storage systems, facility management, and the fire and life safety ecosystem will be among the key areas of focus. Additionally, the conference will address critical concerns such as first responder health and safety, hazardous materials management, and health care considerations within the alternative fuels industry. Inspection and code enforcement practices, international impact, life safety measures, and loss control strategies will also be discussed.

NFPA products and services will be showcased, and public education initiatives will be highlighted. The conference will provide a platform for sharing the latest research findings and insights, while addressing storage and warehousing practices, fire suppression techniques, and the availability of tools and resources. Transportation considerations and wildland fire management will also feature prominently, making the event a comprehensive gathering for anyone interested in the diverse aspects of fire and safety.

Key sessions

On Monday, June 19, a presentation titled “Addressing Life Safety Risks and Hazards of EV Manufacturing” will discuss the unique hazards in lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle (EV) production. James Taylor and Tanner Burke from ACS Group will present from 8am to 9am.

Another session, “Fireground Contaminant Exposure Control: National and Regional Approaches” will focus on exposure control policies and training used by fire departments. Meanwhile, “Emergency Action Plans and the Role of the Fire and Life Safety Director” will emphasize the importance of emergency action plans in protecting building occupants, from 10:30am to 12pm.

Tuesday, June 20, begins with a significant presentation titled “Constructing the World Cup – Qatar Civil Defense leads with Fire and Life Safety” at 8 am. It will delve into Qatar’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2022, including extensive infrastructure expansion, construction, and renovations to ensure fire and life safety, crowd management, and stadium protection. Qatar’s Civil Defense, part of the Ministry of Interior, will share their experiences, highlighting successes and challenges in this unique event.

Later in the day a session called “Fire Alarm Contractor Shortcuts and Mistakes: How to Avoid Common Code Violations” will educate attendees on identifying and avoiding common code violations committed by fire alarm technicians. The discussion will refer to NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) and NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code) and their practical application in the field.

On Wednesday, Lieutenant Joe Kovalsky will discuss “Mental Health Resources in the Fire Service: Tips, Advice, and More,” addressing the industry’s mental health challenges and the stigma around seeking help. Attendees will hear a firefighter’s personal journey with PTSD and treatment.

Elsewhere, Ashley Rodrigue, Public Affairs Director at Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, will present “Data-Driven Community Risk Reduction: Innovative Ideas and Action Steps,” equipping participants with tools to implement effective Community Risk Reduction initiatives, connecting theory to practice.
