See MSA Safety’s latest innovations in action at FDIC International

MSA Safety, Inc will is showcasing its latest innovations at this week’s Fire Department Instructor’s Conference (FDIC) in Indianapolis, Indiana – one of the world’s largest firefighter conferences and attracts more than 30,000 fire service professionals.

This year, to address the connectivity, accountability, and communications challenges facing those firefighters and their colleagues, MSA will feature the latest enhancements to its Connected Firefighter Platform.

Connected Firefighter Platform

The MSA Connected Firefighter Platform is an ecosystem of technology-based equipment and tools centered around the industry-leading MSA G1 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

The Platform includes the LUNAR Connected Device, a handheld device that provides search and rescue capabilities for firefighters and serves as a personal thermal imaging camera, FireGrid software, HUB, and ALTAIR® portable gas detectors.

FireGrid

Specific to accountability and situational awareness, MSA will feature FireGrid Map View, its latest enhancement to the Connected Firefighter Platform. Map View utilizes the LUNAR device’s GPS capabilities to enable tracking of a firefighter’s estimated location when outside of a structure. In use, Map View provides incident commanders with additional firefighter information from other devices on the Connected Firefighter Platform, including team assignment, G1 SCBA air pressure, and alarm status.

FirstNet

Since LUNAR’s release in 2019, MSA has continuously enhanced the capabilities of the device, Mr. Vartanian explained. At FDIC, MSA will highlight the latest LUNAR update – inclusion with FirstNet, a nationwide public safety communications network. LUNAR is the first device of its kind to work with the FirstNet network, which helps to ensure critical data and information from first responders are transmitted during high-traffic situations when cellular network usage is constricted, such as during natural disaster or national emergencies. FirstNet was developed by the U.S. Congress and the first responder community following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Also on show from MSA Safety

In addition to connected technologies, MSA will highlight a broad range of other fire product safety solutions, including the G1 SCBA, MSA Cairns fire helmets, and MSA Globe fire protective clothing and boots. Attendees can also learn more about the ALTAIR io 4™ portable gas detection wearable and MSA+™, the company’s comprehensive safety subscription offering. MSA+ is currently available for the LUNAR device and ALTAIR gas detectors.

Fire Door Safety in Review guides to be unveiled at FSE

At The Fire Safety Event 2023, which will take place from 25th to 27th April at the NEC, Birmingham, Allegion UK will unveil its new set of Briton ‘Fire Door Safety in Review’ guides. Allegion UK is a pioneer in fire safety hardware and manufacturer of ‘Briton’ door controls.

Pierce unveils apparatus line-up for FDIC

All-electric Vector on show from Ferrara at FDIC

NFPA Annual Conference & Expo: Where innovation meets industry

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) will host its annual Conference & Expo at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas on June 19-21, 2023.

This year’s event will feature more than 110 educational sessions, over 300 exhibitors, and a variety of pavilions, presentations, and special events.

The NFPA Conference & Expo is the largest and most comprehensive event for the fire, electrical, and life safety industry, bringing together thousands of leading professionals.

Keynote address

One of the highlights of the conference will be the keynote speaker at the opening general session, Dr. Albert Manero. Dr. Manero is a visionary social entrepreneur, educator, humanitarian, engineer, and superhero to hundreds of “bionic kids” who have benefited from his mission to make 3-D printed bionic prosthetic limbs accessible to all.

He will provide an inspiring account of the difference one person can make in the world while championing the art—and highly human impact—of science, technology, engineering, and math.

Highlights

The conference will also host the NFPA Spotlight on Public Education (SOPE) on June 19-20, which will cover a wide range of public education issues, such as fire prevention programs and approaches for multiple age groups, the value and impact of community partnerships, and CRR strategies that can help effectively impact communities as a whole.

The NFPA Technical Meeting will begin on June 22, allowing NFPA members and the public to express positions on each certified amending motion (CAM). If necessary, based upon the number of CAMs, the meeting will continue on Friday, June 23, allowing additional time for full debate and action. Final details of the Technical Meeting scheduling, as well as the full agenda of all CAMS to be debated and acted upon each day, will be announced by the Motions Committee on or before May 9.

The Fire Safety Event: Bigger than ever before

IFSJ caught up with Tristan Norman, Show Director for The Fire Safety Event, to find out about what’s in store for attendees

Why should people attend The Fire Safety Event?

Since the fire safety event launched in 2016 in the NEC in Birmingham it has really gathered momentum over years, and even with the pandemic it has always grown year-on-year. This year it has grown more than any other year in its history – the show will be double the size of what it was in 2022.

We have some phenomenal exhibitors, a brilliant array of speakers, more networking opportunities and meeting opportunities than ever before, plus more opportunities for CPD. Overall, the event as a proposition truly is the UK’s number one meeting of the fire industry. We have more exhibitors and visitors there than any other platform in the UK

What is on the agenda for the fire industry at The Fire Safety this year?

One is the fallout from the Hackitt report. We’re five years on now and I think that some of the impacts are still being felt and worked through. Another is Brexit and what that has meant for product certification. In terms of new trends and innovation, we have a great section on cyber security and what that means withing the fire safety industry, how it impacts the likes of wireless detection.

Other things on our agenda are industry wide issues such as unconscious bias and levelling the playing field for anyone from any background, sex, nationality or belief to feel included in the fire industry, and to choose it as a viable career path. We’ve got some great sessions around diversity in the fire sector.

Nineteen as a business 60 per cent women. Diversity and inclusion is big on our own agenda as a business and we’re trying to help emanate that through our shows, and in light of recent reports that have come out from the London Fire Brigade, it has never been a bigger topic for the fire industry. It is one in particular that we would like to shine a positive light on and make sure that we’re doing everything we can as a vehicle and a platform for the industry to grow together and be more inclusive, and to make sure that we are utilising the incredible skillset of everyone that would like to be in the fire and safety industry.

All in all, we’re trying to create a platform for the fire industry to put them on the front foot and help people within the industry to lead the charge, whether that’s with technology and innovation or safety standards or diversity and inclusion. We are trying to be as forward thinking as we possibly can and ensure we are embracing all of the new impacts of trends and innovation as much as possible.

What key speakers and sessions should attendees from the fire industry look out for?

The session on day one that I’m really looking forward to is from Alison Phillips, the head of fire safety and risk management at Ocado. She’s coming in to talk about the lessons learned from the big Ocado warehouse fire in Andover – I think that’s going to be a fantastic session. On that same day, there’s going to be a session on unconscious bias within the industry. There will be representatives from manufacturers and industry professionals all talking around diversity and inclusion within the sector and how we can address that unconscious bias and grow as an industry.

Day two kicks off with an address from the Home Office, that is going to be a key session as it will address a lot of the issues that are still coming out of Grenfell and where we are five years down the line. We’ve then got a session in the afternoon of cyber threat to fire safety – as the world moves more digital, even in the fire and safety industry, the thread that seems to go through most industries is cyber security and cyber vulnerability and so its about making sure that our systems, particularly life safety systems are as robust as possible to ensure that there is no failure there.

Fire safety has some of the strictest certification in the world for a reason: if it fails the consequences are dire. If that is due to a hack or cyber threat then that’s something that we all need to be aware of. There are companies doing great things in that area for the fire sector.

The final day we’ve got Bob Docherty, the president if the Institute of Fire Safety Managers, talking around the Hackitt report five years on: what’s changed, what hasn’t, where there’s room for improvement.

We’ve got other interesting sessions around fire safety in residential buildings and on safe evacuation plans and the role of emergency lighting when it comes to tall buildings as well as larger commercial buildings and campuses. The conference wraps up with a session on protecting public premises so talking around what protecting public places and premises means in this day and age.

Can you tell me about the range of exhibitors from the fire industry at the show this year?

We’re delighted with the support we’ve received from the fire safety industry, from the manufacturers and service providers we’ve really been blown away by the support. We have a full sweep of the Halma Group companies which is the first time we have managed to get all of them together in one exhibiting space in many years, so that’s a big development for us.

We’ve got the likes of SSAIB, IOSH, and our supporting event partners such as IFSJ. It would be remiss for me not to talk around the work the ASFP do at our event – they put a lot into making the Fire Safety Event a success. This year they’ll be coming with their portable classroom for people to learn about passive fire and that will have a VR learning experience.

We are indebted to the Fire Protection Association (FPA) for the work they do both speaking at our event and post event, and BAFE who are key partners with us, and IFE doing IFSM. We’re really proud to work with all of our event partners and we thank them for getting involved in our event.

What networking opportunities will be available at this year’s event?

There will be networking opportunities for individual groups, a lot of the groups that come into the event like NAHFO, they’ll have a meeting at the show; Women in Fire will be having a meet up.

There’s a general rule which has become a tradition around the event which is that from 4pm onwards the event doesn’t necessarily ‘down tools’ but we start hosting our happy hours on all the networking lounges – live Music, free drinks – that will really put networking into full swing. Then there are a whole host of evening events that will happen across the city of Birmingham and the NEC campus for the whole industry – there’s too many to list, but it’s one not to be missed.

What are you most excited for as the event draws closer?

As event organisers, that transition from staring at a 2D floor plan and then seeing that built into a show always brings that sense of excitement. Seeing it built and the time and effort that our exhibitors make into those stands presences and seeing that come to life is amazing.

The thing I’m most looking forward to is that buzz. We’ve got more visitors and exhibitors registered than we ever have before, the whole event itself is nearly double in size and we’re just so excited to get to April and put on a fantastic event. Seeing it all come together is what I’m most excited about.

Orama Group to make FIREX debut

Wireless fire safety solutions providers Ramtech and Hyfire will showcase their products at FIREX 2023 as part of The Orama Group, a collaboration that represents the industry’s commitment to working together.

The Orama Group was formed in 2022 through Halma Group’s investment and ownership, and already covers over 30 global geographies, utilising its combined expertise to develop new wireless technologies and solutions.

FIREX is one of Europe’s largest fire safety events and offers industry wide opportunity to connect, learn, source and discover the latest in life-saving technology. The group said it is confident that FIREX matches it mission to shape a safer world through innovation, with a culture built on thinking digitally, acting transparently, being accountable and staying close to customers.

The Orama Group first presented itself in the metaverse, to contextualise the technological vision, and FIREX will be its next appearance from 16 to18 May 2023.

Ramtech

Ramtech regularly launches new and improved versions of its most successful products – such as the audio recording feature on its REACT platform, which will be demonstrated live throughout FIREX – showcasing its commitment to seeking greater awareness and answers for its customers’ problems.

Adam Jurka, sales manager at Ramtech, said: “This year will be the first time that Ramtech and Hyfire attend FIREX under the collective group name. We hope this sends a message to our clients and competitors that collaboration is going to remain a key driver in achieving industry betterment.

Construction is one of Ramtech’s key sectors and its automatic 24/7 Water Leak Detection (WLD) offering, launched late last year, is an example of an integrated solution. Ramtech believes that the WLD system, combined with its established WES3 fire safety offering, is a significant stride forward in the digitisation of construction, as proven by a recent high-profile awards ceremony shortlisting.

Jurka added: “While fire is responsible for the largest insurance losses in construction, escape of water is still the most common – and most costly – for construction project teams. By extending functionality of our wireless solutions to also cover WLD, which can connect into our fire and evacuation WES system, construction professionals can begin improving site safety in a matter of minutes.”

Hyfire

Hyfire will present the Taurus wireless fire solution, including the TauREX software for programming and setting up the Taurus system. FDIC International: Looking ahead to the ultimate firefighter conference

With new elements such as the Women in Fire Conference and IGNITE, there is a lot to look forward to at FDIC International 2023

FDIC International 2023 is one of the most anticipated events in the world for the firefighting community. The annual conference brings together thousands of fire and rescue professionals, world-class instructors, and industry experts from around the world to share knowledge, showcase innovative products and services, and participate in hands-on training and educational sessions. The 2023 event will be held from April 24-29 at the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.

With over 35,000 industry professionals expected to attend, FDIC International 2023 offers an incredible opportunity for attendees to develop stronger industry relationships, learn from other departments about the challenges they are facing, and bring back new insights to their own departments and businesses. The week-long event includes with interactive hands-on training sessions, where firefighters and fire and rescue professionals can participate in live training courses and pre-conference workshops.

Over 200 conference sessions will be taught by renowned instructors presenting new areas of interest within the fire service along with updated content on important topics. Attendees can learn about the latest tactics, techniques, and technologies designed to take their knowledge to the next level.

FDIC International 2023 also features special events, including the Women in Fire Conference, which provides training, support, and advocacy for women in the fire service, and IGNITE, an exhibiting destination for start-up businesses owned by emergency service entrepreneurs looking to make their debut at the show.

The North America region is expected to dominate the fire alarm and detection market at the event. The exhibition will showcase advancements in technology for fire protection, such as AI-powered and IoT-enabled fire detection systems. Everything to look out for at FDIC International 2023

Hands on Training

The H.O.T. Evolutions offers the latest training on fire service technology and techniques, led by some of the most influential figures in the industry. These sessions take place on 25-25 April and are designed to improve the skills of firefighters who attend, equipping them with valuable knowledge to enhance the safety of their communities.

Instructor Chris Minichiello, a firefighter from the FDNY and East Coast Rescue Solutions, will lead an informative session titled ‘Conventional Forcible Entry: The “Keys to the Job”‘. This class is designed to teach the basics of forcible entry, as well as advanced techniques, with an emphasis on hands-on experience for each participant, where they will be given the opportunity to force inward/outward doors on props.

Ray McCormack, a retired lieutenant from the Fire Department of New York, will lead a class titled ‘H.O.S.E.: Hoisting, Operating, Stretching, Estimating’. This session combines traditional best practices and contemporary research, offering advanced engine skill development. The class focuses on flowing while advancing, water mapping, interior hose stretches, and attack. Attendees will rotate through multiple stations to gain knowledge and confidence.

Firefighter Aaron Fields from the Seattle Fire Department will lead a session called ‘Nozzle Forward’, aimed at improving engine operations through a technique-driven methodology. The class will cover various topics such as handline stretching, hose bed configuration options, fire attack theory, hose-line management, and keystone angle configurations. Attendees will learn hose handling and advancement techniques, allowing them to apply their new knowledge in real-world situations.

Elsewhere, Joseph Berchtold, Chief of Teaneck (NJ) Fire Department, will conduct a session titled ‘Flashover and Modern Fire Behaviour Training.’ This class provides firefighters with a valuable opportunity to observe fire behaviour and the telltale signs that lead up to a flashover. The course aims to equip firefighters with the knowledge and skill required to recognise flashovers, along with escape methods and safe fireground operations.

Getting into gear

Show attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a series of pre-conference workshops on Monday and Tuesday. These workshops, which last around four hours, offer a comprehensive exploration of specific topics within the fire service, both traditional and new. With a variety of topics to choose from, participants can expect to gain new insights, ideas and approaches to bring back to their departments.

Captain Steven Hamilton of Fort Jackson (SC) Fire Department will be hosting a workshop on ‘Active Shooter: Preplanning the Response’. This session aims to equip attendees with guidelines and recommended practices to identify and analyse high-risk target areas, as well as the required multiagency participation to create practical and effective pre-incident plans.

Another workshop, ‘Developing Firefighter Resiliences’ will be led by Firefighter Ric Jorge of Tactical Resiliency Training. This session is based on the book Developing Firefighter Resiliency by Fire Engineering, and includes video and photos of immersion training classes. Attendees will learn performance training techniques such as bio-metric monitoring, team pairing, mindset work, and emotional regulation.

Battalion Chief (Ret.) William Peters of Jersey City (NJ) Fire Department will be leading a session on the intricacies of apparatus purchasing. The course will provide guidance to participants through the challenging process of specifying fire apparatus. Peters will look at justification, the use of the National Fire Protection Association 1901 Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus (including upcoming changes), conducting successful preconstruction conferences, thorough final factory inspections, and the delivery and acceptance of new apparatus.

Meanwhile, Assistant Chief David Polikoff of Frederick County (MD) Fire and Rescue will be hosting a workshop called “Command Under Fire”, designed to teach new and experienced incident commanders, as well as line officers, the art of commanding an incident. Students will learn to make sound decisions, convey their strategy over the radio, and run an effective functional fireground.

Bill Gustin, Captain of Miami-Dade (FL) Fire Rescue, will conduct a workshop titled ‘Management and Operations for Newly-Promoted Company Officers’. The main goal of this workshop is to equip newly-promoted company officers with the necessary leadership skills and confidence to manage their company when responding to alarms, when operating at roadway incidents, and when their company is first to arrive at fires in different types of buildings.

And for those looking to better understand fire through technology, Joseph DeVito, Captain/Paramedic of Fort Myers Beach (FL) Fire Control District, will delve into Fire Behaviour and Thermal Imaging. Students will learn how to scan with a thermal imager, recognise flow paths, and identify go/no-go situations based on their understanding of fire behaviour,

Knowledge is power

FDIC International provides an abundance of opportunities for learning the latest tactics, techniques, and technologies in the fire service. With world-renowned instructors, attendees can take their knowledge to the next level through a variety of courses offered throughout the week.

Terri Reid, Captain of Baltimore County (MD) Fire Department, will be presenting a seminar on ‘Recruiting for All the Right Reasons’, addressing the persistent issue of recruitment in the fire service. The class will analyse the latest statistics on fire and emergency services in comparison to data over the past several years, public perception surrounding why some individuals do not believe they have what it takes to join the service, and proven techniques to recruit and retain a more diverse fire service.

Denis Onieal, former Deputy US Fire Administrator, will be sharing his expertise on ‘Leadership Lessons Learned on the Line’. This presentation is a practical exercise designed for aspiring or current fire officers. Participants will identify the leadership traits they admire and those they want to develop in themselves in a confidential setting.

Mental health is a critical topic in the fire service, and Daniel DeGryse, retired Battalion Chief and Director of the Rosecrance Florian Program, will be leading a conversation about suicide with leaders in the fire service and mental health field. The aim is to facilitate thoughtful perspectives on suicide and to generate ideas on how to shift from reactive approaches to preventive ones.

Paul Shoemaker, Firefighter Paramedic and Owner of Next Level Extrication in Colorado, will discuss the causes, risks, and tactics surrounding lithium-ion battery fires in a session titled ‘Electric Vehicle Fires: Causes, Risks, and Tactics’. Students will gain knowledge about electric vehicle fires, fire behaviour associated with lithium battery fires, causes of the fires, proper steps to extinguish them and more.

Bobbie Scopa, Deputy Director for Fire Operations at the US Forest Service – Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, will host a seminar on ‘Leadership and Diversity’. Through entertaining stories based on 45 years in the fire service, the instructor will share experiences of a long and successful fire career, from being a tailboard firefighter to an assignment in Washington, DC. The class will encourage firefighters, company officers, and chiefs to reflect on their behaviour in relation to diversity in the workplace.

And Todd McNeal, Chief from Dixon (CA) Fire Department, will lead a seminar on harnessing data during wildland emergencies called ‘Data-Driven Decision Making for Wildland Emergencies’. The class will introduce attendees to the volume of data available at their fingertips and accessed in a split second related to wildland fires. Students will be taught how to harvest data, apply context and filters, convert information to intelligence that is actionable, and incorporate that intelligence into their decision making and crew briefings for safer operations and decisions in the wildland fire environment.

Women in Fire Conference

The Women in Fire Conference is set to return to FDIC International, starting with an opening ceremony and followed by a line-up of educational classes that offer training, support, and advocacy specifically tailored to women in the fire service.

On Monday 24th, the dedicated day-long conference will feature a session by Bradley Pinsky, Attorney at Law; Chief (Ret.) – Pinsky Law Group, PLLC; Manlius (NY) Fire Department, titled ‘Must-Have Policies and Practices for Every Fire Department’. This class focuses on the most essential administrative policies and operational practices required by every fire department in the US and Canada.

Patrick Kenny, Chief (Ret.) – Western Springs (IL) Fire Department will present ‘Why We Need to Put the Cape Back On’. In this presentation, Kenny shares a personal perspective on the challenges of mental illness in the fire service. He discusses how the stigma surrounding mental illness can prevent firefighters from seeking help, and how this can lead to tragic outcomes.

Elsewhere, Mike Gagliano, Captain (Ret.) – Seattle (WA) Fire Department will look at The Art of Go/No-Go. The goal that Gagliano outlines is to create a framework of three varying profiles: Rescue, Building, and Fire. The instructor will show how these profiles allow you to keep focused on your decisions and give you the ability to draw on what you have learned and react to changes in the dynamic fire environment.

Networking opportunities

FDIC International provides a unique opportunity for members of the fire service from all over the world to come together, connect, and share knowledge. With so much to offer, attendees can maximise their experience by attending a variety of special events planned throughout the week. One such event is the MATCH! Program, which has returned this year to facilitate networking.

Fire Rescue Station of the Future

FDIC International will feature the “Fire Rescue Station of the Future” – an interactive showcase of cutting-edge design and products. Designed by H2M architects + engineers (H2M) and featuring more than 30 additional sponsors, this walk-through exhibit of a futuristic station will look at essential programmatic changes to the current fire station model.

The futuristic station is designed to look at how current fire/rescue station designs evolve to accommodate new needs such as the growing number of electric apparatus and support vehicles and managing the electric service of a building while dealing with local codes and ordinances for proper fire separation and fire suppression systems.

It will seek to answer: how fire stations can accommodate battery storage technology; if drones and robots become common; if biometrics will become the new standard for measuring the health and well-being of responders; how we can retrofit existing stations with these ideas and equipment so that all battalions are prepared for the future; and above all what a ‘futuristic’ station look like.

Attendees will be able to navigate through the exhibit, exploring exciting new building and room designs with new equipment/products in each. Explorable spaces will include: bays with brand new electric apparatus, robots, drones, and the state-of-the-art apparatus support; decontamination and transition zones and laundering facilities that will bring visitors from the traditionally “dirty/red” side of the building to the “clean/green” side; cutting-edge training rooms where presentations will be offered throughout the conference; a top of the line command and dispatch centre; modern living quarters and exercise room; and an outdoor/well-being area.

A tribute to Bobby Halton

An evening event will be held on Wednesday 26 April from 5:30-7:15 pm to remember the late Chief (Ret.) Bobby Halton. He served as the education director of FDIC and editor in chief of Fire Engineering, and his sudden passing on December 19, 2022, was deeply felt by the fire service community.

The is a celebration of Halton’s life and career by encouraging attendees to share their funny stories and reminiscences about Bobby’s 18 years of service in those roles. It will serve as an opportunity to pay tribute to the man who loved, served, and taught the fire service throughout his life, and everyone is welcome to attend.

NVFC announces winners of 2023 Fire Service Achievement Awards

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has announced the winners of its annual fire service achievement awards, recognising those who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and service to their department and community.

The awards for 2023 have been presented to LeRoy Koopman for Lifetime Achievement, Chief Mahlon Irish Jr. for the Chief James P. Seavey Sr. Health & Wellness Leadership Award, Kyra Kozey for Junior Firefighter of the Year, and East Norwich Junior Program for Junior Firefighter Program of the Year. The awards are sponsored by California Casualty, VFIS, Lincoln Financial Group, and Ward Diesel Filter Systems.

NVFC chair Steve Hirsch praised the winners for their exceptional contributions, highlighting the ways in which volunteers give back to their communities every day. The winners will receive their awards at an event in May, with Koopman, Irish, and Kozey honored at an awards ceremony during the NVFC spring meeting in Arlington, Virginia, on May 21.

The East Norwich Junior Program will receive their award at a local ceremony to ensure all members can attend. The awards underscore the importance of recognising and rewarding those who serve their communities and promote safety within the fire and emergency services sector.

Lifetime Achievement Award

The Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by Lincoln Financial Group, has been awarded to Chief LeRoy Koopman in recognition of his long and dedicated service to the fire and emergency services. Chief Koopman joined the Colton Volunteer Fire Department in South Dakota in 1963 and has continued to serve for more than six decades.

He has held leadership positions in numerous fire organizations, including the South Dakota Fire Chief’s Association, where he was elected as Fire Chief of the Year in 1982, and the NVFC Board of Directors. Koopman is also dedicated to training and mentoring firefighters, providing his expertise across South Dakota.

Health & Wellness Leadership Award

The Chief James P. Seavey Sr. Health & Wellness Leadership Award, co-sponsored by VFIS and Ward Diesel Filter Systems, has been awarded to Chief Mahlon Irish Jr. Chief Mahlon Irish Jr. of the Homer Fire Department, NY, was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in 2014, which doctors linked to his time in the fire service. Irish has made it his mission to educate firefighters across New York and beyond about protecting themselves from certain types of cancer.

He has delivered presentations to 202 fire departments, reaching 2,886 fire service personnel over 11,734 miles. Irish has made significant changes to his lifestyle since his diagnosis, and in his home department, he assembled decontamination buckets, convinced the village to pay for significant upgrades, and converted an unused apparatus bay into a clean gear storage room.

Junior Firefighter of the Year

The Junior Firefighter of the Year Award, sponsored by California Casualty, has been awarded Kyra Kozey. Kozey, 17, of the Scotts Valley (CA) Fire District has been a junior firefighter for four years. During this time, she has completed over 400 hours of community service, demonstrating a passion for helping others. She has organized and led several community events, including a diaper drive for the Santa Cruz Pregnancy Resource Center, a candlelight vigil for 9/11, and an annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

Kozey has completed the district’s firefighter academy and assists with regular training and maintenance of the department’s tools and equipment. She has also taken the initiative to create and maintain the department’s Instagram account and actively recruits new junior firefighters.

In addition to her community involvement, Kozey is a high school honor student, plays varsity soccer, and is involved in the school’s Interact Club. She plans to pursue a career in the fire service after college.

Junior Firefighter Program of the Year

The East Norwich Junior Program has been awarded the Junior Firefighter Program of the Year Award, sponsored by California Casualty. Established in 1994 to aid in the recruitment of firefighters to the East Norwich Fire Company #1, the program has since evolved into a structured youth program, providing valuable firefighting and safety skills to young leaders on their path to becoming future firefighters, officers, and chiefs.

These juniors have received extensive training in various firefighting techniques, including hose lines, aerial and ground ladders, and forcible entry. Additionally, they have taken part in community activities, such as organizing Safe Kid’s Day, conducting fundraising for sick firefighters, and participating in an international exchange program that brought junior firefighters from Germany to the U.S. to participate in training and fire camp.

The program has produced current chiefs, officers, firefighters, and medics, highlighting the benefits of training and the development of leadership skills from a young age.
