Britannia Fire is simplifying fire safety with composite extinguishers

Over the last ten years, the fire extinguisher market has evolved significantly. Customers have been calling out for change.

They want fire extinguishers that are longer lasting, easily maintained, more cost-effective and eco-friendly.

This is partly down to a global push to achieve net zero and move towards a circular economy, which aims to eliminate waste and prolong the life of materials and products by reusing, repairing, refurbishing, remanufacturing and recycling.

In the UK for example, businesses are expected to decarbonise operations, reduce emissions and improve efficiency with the aim of reaching net zero by 2050.

Through the Environment Act 2021 and Waste Prevention Programme updated in 2023, businesses are also expected to reduce waste and improve resource efficiency to help the Government meet legally binding targets to reduce residual waste per capita by 50% by 2042.

From 2022, large companies and financial institutions must also disclose climate-related risks, including waste and resource efficiency, in annual reports to improve transparency and accountability.

Traditionally, steel fire extinguishers have been the go-to solution for facilities managers and fire safety professionals, but they are prone to corrosion and therefore need servicing every year and replacing every five years.

They are also heavy, non-recyclable and often contain harmful ‘forever’ chemicals.

Composite fire extinguishers on the other hand, are helping organisations to meet stringent waste and carbon reduction targets and simplifying fire safety.

They’re made from a unique combination of durable plastic and aramid fibres, meaning they are strong, don’t corrode and therefore last 20 years.

They are free from harmful chemicals, fully recyclable and don’t need annual servicing.

A pioneer of this technology, Britannia Fire launched its first P50 composite range from its Norfolk factory 15 years ago.

Simple, in-house annual checks

Composite fire extinguishers only need a simple check by a Responsible Person every year, rather than a costly annual service.

This can be done by the customer at their convenience and is much cheaper and more time and carbon efficient.

For sensitive sites, this also removes the hassle of additional security clearances and safety inductions for service personnel.

Only one refurbishment required in 20 years

Lasting 20 years, composite fire extinguishers only need refurbishing once in their lifetime.

A refurbishment is carried out by a skilled engineer, who empties, pressure tests and refills the extinguisher.

They also replace the red outer jacket, which clearly states the expiry date.

Britannia has a stock of refurbished extinguishers so they can be swapped out immediately, ensuring continuity of fire safety.

Reduces carbon footprint and waste

Composite fire extinguishers are better for the environment and organisations can make huge carbon savings when switching.

Manufacturing is less energy intensive and at Britannia Fire it is partially powered by solar energy, resulting in a 22% carbon saving when compared to metal alternatives.

Carbon emissions are reduced further as there is no requirement for annual servicing and the additional journeys that entails.

They also last longer, are fully recyclable and free from harmful PFAS chemicals.

Saves money

Cost savings are huge over the product’s lifetime.

Customers are saving thousands of pounds on annual servicing and only have to replace their units every 20 years as opposed to five.

The P50 is also multi-purpose.

Both the water mist and fluorine-free foam versions are suitable for Class A (carbonaceous) and electrical fires up to 1000V, with the P50 ECO foam additionally suitable for Class B (flammable liquids) and Class F (fats/oils) fires.

Importantly, this means that one or the other should suffice in most locations and that CO2 extinguishers for suppressing electrical or class B fires, are often no longer required at all.

Many of our new customers can reduce the number of extinguishers they need by half, saving a huge amount of money from the outset.

Easy to use

A single fire extinguisher at each fire point takes away any confusion and makes it much easier to use confidently in the event of a fire.

Precious time in an emergency can be wasted when faced with a choice.

National Trust selects P50 Water Mist extinguishers for UK holiday cottages 

Britannia has built a strong customer base since launching the P50, listening to feedback and adapting to accommodate their needs.

The National Trust, for example, has installed P50 water mist fire extinguishers in all its 600 UK holiday cottages.

Bob Bantock, Operational Risk Business Partner and National Fire Specialist at the National Trust, explains: “The National Trust offers holiday lets in beautiful locations across the country.

“Of course, the safety of our guests is paramount and by law we have a number of fire safety measures in place in every property, including clear escape routes, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and the provision of fire blankets and fire extinguishers, which are typically fitted in the kitchen or hallway.

“We first tried dry powder fire extinguishers, but soon found issues with residue and contamination if they were ever discharged.

“The powder was a real problem to clean.

“AFFF foam fire extinguishers weren’t much better because the foam needed replacing every five years, with hazardous waste disposal eventually costing more than the extinguisher itself.

“It became cheaper to buy a new one than empty and re-fill an existing one, which clashes with our sustainability objectives.

“But above all, the biggest headache was that both the dry powder and AFFF foam came in traditional metal cylinders which can corrode and need servicing every year.

 “It was costly to send service technicians to remote locations and we found ourselves continually apologising to guests that their holiday would be interrupted by a service visit.

“Thankfully, Britannia Fire was able to offer a convenient and cost-effective solution, with environmental benefits.

“We transitioned to the two-litre P50 Water Mist fire extinguishers which have proved much more suitable.

“The P50s contain de-ionised water, which means when they are discharged, there’s almost no residue to clean up.

“They are multi-purpose and suitable for both Class A fires and electrical fires.

“Crucially, the cylinder is made from composite materials which don’t corrode, so they don’t need annual servicing, just regular visual inspections by our own staff.

“After 10 years, the P50s are refurbished and then good to last another 10 years.”

Britannia Fire sees 40 percent rise in production after P50 shift

Production growth driven by composite extinguisher focus

Britannia Fire has reported a 40 percent increase in fire extinguisher production one year after halting traditional metal unit manufacturing in favour of its P50 composite range.

The UK-based manufacturer said it made the switch in July 2024 in response to rising demand for cost-efficient, lower-carbon alternatives.

The company stated that this strategic change has been supported by a recent factory refurbishment, doubling its capacity and enabling it to produce more units in the last quarter than it did in the whole of 2020.

Britannia Fire added that the P50 model has attracted widespread interest due to its reduced environmental impact, extended lifespan and reusability.

According to the manufacturer, the production line is now partially powered by solar energy and operates at a lower energy intensity than its previous processes.

Environmental impact and regulatory context

The company said the composite-based P50 extinguisher is PFAS-free and made using a low-carbon, low-energy manufacturing process.

According to Britannia Fire, the extinguisher’s components are fully recyclable or reusable, with no material sent to landfill.

“A year on and business continues to go from strength to strength.

“The switch and subsequent £1m factory upgrade has enabled us to double capacity, reduce delivery times and keep up with unprecedented demand.

“This move was as much about future proofing our business as it was becoming more sustainable and supporting the circular economy.

“The benefits of embracing new technology and doing things differently were also a big draw but the industry has been slow to catch-up.

“As PFAS regulations come into force and awareness grows, the shift toward more sustainable fire safety is a must.

“We have a real opportunity to reduce our environmental impact without compromising on protection.”

Employment growth and company expansion

Britannia Fire confirmed it has increased its workforce by eight people over the past year, bringing its total headcount to 54.

The company said it has invested in new machinery and added vehicles to its delivery fleet to support distribution across the UK.

According to the manufacturer, further plans are underway to add a new administration centre as part of its site development programme.

It said this expansion is intended to meet growing demand and improve internal operations as part of its long-term development.

The company stated that its latest investments will also reduce delivery lead times and streamline customer service.

Customer perspectives on P50 extinguisher use

Nick Greenwood, Fire Safety Manager at the University of Brighton, commented on the benefits of the P50 compared to previous imported models.

Greenwood said: “Our previous fire extinguishers were non-recyclable, inferior imports from abroad that required costly servicing.

“Sustainability is one of the University’s core values. We opted for the P50 due to its impressive environmental credentials.

“Its carbon footprint is less than steel alternatives and it’s also suitable for a multitude of fires, including electrical fires, meaning we only needed one at every fire point rather than two.

“This streamlined things considerably and now makes it easier for the end user, who can simply point and shoot!”

Britannia Fire said the extinguisher’s extended lifespan and low servicing requirements are among the features driving uptake in education, commercial, and public sector settings.

It added that the P50’s suitability for electrical fires means customers can reduce the number of extinguishers required per site.

Large-scale real estate application and regulatory preparedness

Billy Cunningham, Director of Fire Safety at Landsec, said the organisation saw clear value in switching its estate to P50 extinguishers.

Cunningham said: “For a large company like Landsec, the benefit of switching to the P50 was huge.

“The fact that the water mist P50 is so versatile and can be used to tackle all types of fires experienced in office and public spaces, including live electrical equipment fires, means that we’re typically halving the number of fire extinguishers needed at sites and cutting costs considerably.

“We’re always looking for innovative solutions to reduce our carbon footprint.

“The P50 meets all our requirements thanks to its low-carbon, low-waste manufacturing process and servicing requirements.

“It’s also long-lasting, non-toxic and recyclable. The switch to P50 also means we’re ahead of the game and ready for the impending PFAS ban.”

Britannia Fire said growing awareness of incoming PFAS-related restrictions has contributed to increasing demand for its composite extinguisher range.

The company stated that regulations around PFAS and material disposal are likely to shape procurement decisions over the coming years.

Zenova FX fire extinguishers to be distributed across UK by Firefighting Supplies

Zenova agrees UK distribution deal for fire extinguishers

Zenova has announced a distribution agreement with a newly incorporated UK company, Firefighting Supplies, to expand the availability of its fire extinguishers.

According to Zenova, the deal includes an immediate order of 200 units of the Zenova FX 6L all-class extinguisher, with a further 2,000 units confirmed for delivery in the coming months.

Zenova said deliveries will begin immediately and will supply fire extinguishers to schools, hospitals, local authority buildings, infrastructure projects and the new terminal at Leeds Bradford Airport.

The company expects the order to generate more than £125,000 in revenue over the next year.

Zenova said Firefighting Supplies was created to distribute its fire extinguisher products within the UK, particularly targeting the public sector.

Distribution firm established to support national deployment

Zenova stated that Firefighting Supplies was formed to act as a distribution channel for its products, leveraging the fire safety experience of Gary Poole.

Poole previously worked at Calendar Fire Ltd, and Zenova said his background was a key factor in the decision to create a dedicated distributor for the UK market.

The Board of Zenova said it expects Firefighting Supplies to serve as a core route-to-market for the Zenova FX range, with a focus on public sector and infrastructure applications.

The company added that early interest in the new extinguisher model has been strong.

Zenova confirmed that the first units will be deployed across a range of building types, including healthcare and education.

Zenova FX product designed for multi-class fire risks

According to Zenova, the FX 6L extinguisher is suitable for Class A, B, F, and electrical fires.

The extinguisher uses a proprietary fluid developed by Zenova.

The company said the product complies with EN3 and British Standards.

Zenova also said it is intended to provide an alternative to foam-based extinguishers, which are gradually being phased out under the UK Fire Safety Act 2021.

The company added that the extinguisher is suitable for a range of settings, including regulated environments.

Zenova sees broader market interest from distributors

Zenova stated that other established distributors have also shown interest in stocking the Zenova FX range.

The company said this interest is driven by the extinguisher’s multi-class compatibility and alignment with UK fire safety regulations.

From theory to tactics: Inside the new Foam School from Perimeter Solutions

Mark Siem, Business Development Manager at Perimeter Solutions, shares why affordability, mobility and realism were key to designing a new model for foam education

Can you give us an overview of the Perimeter Solutions Industrial Foam School and what prompted its creation?

The idea for the Industrial Foam School started with internal conversations about the need for hands-on training with fluorine-free firefighting foam, but we needed to develop the resources and bring in the personnel to make it happen.

As we continued those discussions and spoke with people across the industry, we heard consistent feedback: most foam training programs felt more like sales pitches than educational experiences.

We also learned that travel was a barrier for many.

Not everyone can afford to fly to Texas or other centralized locations for a week of training.

So, we introduced a new model, deciding to bring the school to our customers.

By traveling to different locations, we are making high-quality, practical foam training more accessible to people who need it.

Affordability was also important to us.

We intentionally priced the program to fit within the budgets of departments and facilities that might otherwise not have the opportunity.

The first session recently took place at the Delaware State Fire Academy – how did it go, and what kind of feedback did you receive from attendees?

The first session went as well as we could have hoped, and the feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive.

We asked participants to complete a post-course survey, and on a 10-point scale, every aspect of the training received ratings of 9 or higher.

Attendees appreciated the quality of the content, the amount of hands-on nozzle time they received, the affordable price point, and even the meals we provided.

One of the things they valued most was the smaller class size, which allowed for more one-on-one time with instructors and a better opportunity to ask questions, something that’s often missing in larger, more traditional foam schools.

The only complaint was really about the rain, which we didn’t enjoy either, but aside from that, it was a strong start and a great foundation to build on as we take the program to new locations.

What are the key skills or knowledge areas that participants walk away with after completing the program?

Over the course of the two-day session, participants receive in-depth training on four key areas: fluorine-free foam fundamentals, foam hardware, application tactics and techniques, and incident preplanning with F3.

Another advantage of our program is the hands-on experience with actual fluorine-free foam.

For a long time, traditional foam schools used training foam during their sessions.

We use SOLBERG® fluorine-free foam, and the facilities we teach at allow for their use, giving attendees the opportunity to work directly with foam used in real-world large-scale fire suppression.

How do you see this training initiative supporting broader industry efforts around the transition to fluorine-free foam solutions?

This training plays a critical role in helping the industry make a successful transition to fluorine-free foam.

By giving end users the knowledge and hands-on experience they need, we are helping them become more confident and capable with F3.

Training is essential and using F3 effectively requires a strong understanding of its properties and application tactics.

Without that, even the best product will not perform as intended in a real-world fire.

We can’t continue to fight the fires as we’ve done in the past, we need to be more mindful of how the foam is applied.

With more dates and locations on the 2025 schedule, what are your goals for the program moving forward?

Our goal is to continue growing the program and expanding its reach.

The next two sessions are set for October 9–10 at Lambton College in Sarnia, Ontario, and October 28–29 at the Fire Academy of the South in Jacksonville, Florida.

We are sticking with our model of small class sizes, hosting 30 or fewer attendees, to ensure quality instruction and personalized engagement.

Looking ahead to 2026, we plan to increase the number of sessions and bring the program to more regions around the world.

Time to retire submersion tactics: Why water tanks fail to stop lithium-ion battery incidents

Neil Pedersen, CEO at Fire Containers limited, explains why submersion tactics are ineffective and how targeted containment units offer a safer and more sustainable alternative

As the global transition to electric vehicles (EVs) accelerates, so too does the challenge of safely managing lithium-ion battery incidents, particularly in post-collision or fire-related recovery scenarios.

For years, one of the most commonly discussed methods for handling runaway battery fires has been full submersion in water.

Yet, while this may appear on the surface to offer a reliable solution, the reality is far more complex – and dangerous.

It is time the industry confronts an inconvenient truth: submersion tactics are not only outdated, but they pose significant safety, environmental, logistical, and cost-related risks.

Instead, advanced water suppression containment systems – such as those utilised in purpose-built containment units – offer a far more effective, scalable, and environmentally responsible alternative.

The myth of submersion

Submersion is often marketed as a “catch-all” solution: place the burning or compromised EV in a large container, flood it with water, and let it sit until the risk has passed.

On paper, it sounds logical.

In practice, it’s riddled with flaws.

1. Size and impracticality

A typical electric vehicle weighs between 1.5 to 3 tonnes and is roughly 4–5 metres long.

Submerging such a vehicle requires a container large enough to fully engulf it in water, filled with tens of thousands of litres.

This volume is not only difficult to access in most real-world recovery scenarios, especially roadside or in urban areas, but also impossible to mobilise quickly without significant delay and infrastructure.

2. Environmental hazards

Lithium-ion battery fires release toxic and corrosive gases, and when these batteries are submerged, the water rapidly becomes contaminated with heavy metals, fluorinated compounds, and harmful particulates.

This produces a hazardous waste by-product that must be disposed of as chemical waste – at high environmental and financial cost.

Spillages or improper containment can lead to serious ecological damage.

3. Fire re-ignition risk not resolved

The common belief that submersion ‘kills’ the fire is misleading.

Lithium-ion battery cells can undergo thermal runaway – a self-sustaining chemical reaction that doesn’t rely on oxygen.

Water may cool the battery temporarily, but cells can reignite hours or even days later, especially once the submerged vehicle is removed.

Submersion delays, but does not neutralise, the root problem.

4. Logistics and transport challenges

Once submerged, how do you move the vehicle? Most recovery operators do not carry 30,000-litre submersion tanks.

Transferring the vehicle between the scene, a submersion tank, and a disposal site increases the risk of cell re-ignition, environmental leakage, and injury.

It also escalates operational complexity beyond what recovery teams or emergency responders are trained or equipped to manage.

The case for water suppression containment

Rather than trying to extinguish thermal runaway through sheer volume, a smarter, safer method lies in controlled suppression within purpose-built containment systems – designed to isolate, cool, and control the event while supporting emergency response and recovery.

1. Engineered for real-world application

Water suppression containment units – such as the Fire Safety Containment Unit (FSCU) and Electric Vehicle Containment Unit (EVCU) developed by Fire Containers limited – are designed specifically to handle EV incidents.

These mobile units can be deployed at the scene, allowing immediate containment without moving the vehicle over long distances or waiting for specialist tanks.

2. Targeted water mist technology

Unlike brute-force submersion, these units use high-efficiency water mist suppression systems.

Fine water droplets rapidly absorb heat and cool the battery casing, suppressing flames and preventing escalation.

Water is applied directly to the risk zone, minimising waste and environmental runoff.

3. Continuous suppression with water recycling

Advanced units incorporate recycling sumps and filtration systems, allowing for continual suppression without requiring thousands of litres of clean water.

Contaminated water is captured, filtered, and reused within the sealed system – protecting the environment and drastically reducing disposal costs.

4. Sealed and safe transport

Unlike submersion tanks, water suppression containment units are built to comply with ADR regulations, meaning they are legal and safe to transport hazardous goods.

The vehicle remains sealed within the unit – under suppression and observation – during its journey to a secure facility.

This reduces the need for on-site firefighting and protects recovery operators from toxic exposure.

5. Supporting ESG goals
