From spark to inferno: Wildland fire mitigation strategies

As wildfire takes over the globe, WFCA Senior Policy Advisor Bob Roper navigates the complex terrain of wildland fire policy development and mitigation strategies

The world’s attention is riveted on the increasing threat posed by wildfires, a global issue that has been amplified exponentially by the spectre of climate change. Recent developments underscore the severity and global scale of this escalating crisis. From the vast wilderness of Canada to the diverse landscapes of Europe, the wildfire threat casts a long, ominous shadow.

In Canada, an unprecedented wildfire season has been unfolding, triggered by a heat dome that caused temperatures to soar to unheard-of levels. This extreme heatwave, a direct consequence of climate change, has ignited hundreds of wildfires across British Columbia, Alberta, and other provinces.

The fires have incinerated vast swaths of forests, destroyed properties, and claimed lives. Toxic smoke from these wildfires has not only choked Canadian cities but has travelled thousands of kilometres to reach as far as Europe, underscoring the transcontinental reach of this crisis.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Europe is grappling with its own wildfire challenges. A deadly heatwave, dubbed “Lucifer,” has been sweeping across the continent, triggering a spate of wildfires from Spain to Greece. Climate scientists are unambiguous about the role of climate change in these extreme weather events.

The continent is seeing its temperature records shattered, and the scorching heat has turned vast tracts of vegetation into tinderboxes ready to ignite. The wildfires in the Mediterranean, known for their holiday destinations, are also threatening lives, homes, and the region’s valuable tourism industry.

The intersection of climate change, extreme heat events, and wildfires has created an inferno of catastrophe. It paints a dystopian portrait of a future where uncontrollable wildfires could become an annual event, drastically impacting ecosystems, human health, and economies.

This harsh reality is also evident in the United States, which grapples with its own unique challenges. The interplay of climate change, land-use practices, and an increasingly complex electrical infrastructure has created a unique tinderbox for wildfires. A confluence of factors, including drought conditions, rising temperatures, and human activity, has created a perfect storm for the wildfires.

Mitigating this crisis calls for a global response, and importantly, expert insight and guidance. As we dive into this looming threat, we sought the expertise of someone deeply embedded in the heart of this issue – Bob Roper.

Roper, with a career spanning over 45 years in the fire service and wildland fire policy development, has worked in various roles from Ventura County Fire Department Fire Chief to State Forester for Nevada. Currently, he is the wildfire policy advisor for the Western Fire Chiefs Association, where he focuses his expertise on strategic planning and public policy related to Wildland Fire issues. In our conversation, Roper sheds light on the complexities of wildfire prevention, the role of electrical utility vendors, and his vision for the future of wildfire mitigation.

As our understanding of the complexities deepens, it underscores the pressing need for strategic responses to manage and navigate this escalating threat. We sat down with Roper to these explore challenges in depth, providing insight into the complexities of wildfire prevention, the role of electrical utility vendors, and his vision for the future of wildfire mitigation.

What drove your decision to focus specifically on wildland fire policy issues?

Coming up through the Ventura County Fire Department, I had the pleasure to work with some of the founding members of FIRESCOPE. FIRESCOPE was created in the early 70’s to address issues involving common operational procedures and organization of emergency incidents. Thus, the Incident Command System (ICS) was born. My work experience focused on wildfires as I found that if an agency can command a dynamic moving wildfire incident, that agency can successfully handle most any other type of emergency incident.

I soon became involved in local wildfire policy development which dictated state policy coordination. This compounded and I soon became involved in the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ Wildland Fire Policy Committee, which created the opportunity to evolve into national policy interaction. It was through these collective experiences that I found the integral nature of how policies at all levels must work up and down for success.

How have you seen the strategies for handling wildfires evolve, especially with the advancements in technology?

Technology and procedural changes always enhance our overall success, but the real secret to success is getting the right players to the table to discuss and create good policy. These players need to understand all perspectives and remove the barriers to success while focusing on the goals.

We have seen top-down policy at all levels get enacted, but the degree of success actually lies with the performance of the policy at the field level. We also cannot rely on policy being adopted without proper education and marketing of consequence management. So, technology is not the be all end all – it becomes the supporting tool to make policies successful.

Can you discuss challenges and achievements in wildland fire policies across local, state, and federal levels?

When addressing the local, state, and federal policy levels, it really boils down to a matter of perspective. Example, Ventura County has a model Hazard Reduction program that builds defensible space. Its success rate speaks volumes, but it was built on local community relationships and hard data to gain the needed political support.

This program became a model for CA, but the enforcement program has not gained the same success rate. This is because of the exponential nature of education and outreach needed to have the same success as Ventura County did.

This situation is further exacerbated at the federal level when you do not have the same community bonds that the local level has. This is why the wildfire problem cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach. Success relies on a common vision and/or an enforcement program to force compliance rather than rely on intrinsic values.

How do electrical utility vendors’ transmission systems contribute to wildfire ignitions, and how significant is this issue?

Utility systems are an essential part of our daily lives, but everything needs to be maintained. These systems can produce trouble faults from arcing, heat exposures and critical failures due to age, accidents (traffic accidents) and acts of nature (trees into lines and animal ground faults). Serious consideration has been made to evaluate the cost of undergrounding the transmission and distribution systems, but that mitigation option can be cost prohibitive.

This becomes a conundrum where we ask: “What is the financial pain tolerance in utility bills to upgrade systems vs. what are acceptable wildfire losses?” It’s interesting that electrical utility caused wildfires only account for 7-10% of all wildfires. It’s just that many of the high-profile wildfires recently have been attributed to electrical utility ignitions.

What are some of the potential pitfalls of vendors being left in charge of their own system monitoring?

It’s always best to have all parties practice full transparency, so public trust is maintained. We must recognise that technology isn’t foolproof, leading to false positive trouble reports that can undermine our trust in it. However, as these systems improve over time and our confidence grows, this creates a corresponding dependence on them.

Can you explain how a state warning control centre might utilise technology to monitor these transmission systems more effectively?

By a state warning centre or equivalent having this type of data, utility companies can ensure that they have the best data available to mitigate potential ignition starts. This type of data also provides an overwatch display for the respective governing entity. The real secret in this type of data is the elimination of false positives, so there is a high degree of reliability for response.

How might such monitoring help in pre-positioning emergency resources before adverse wildfire weather conditions are present?

In many cases today, when actual or anticipated incidents occur, resources are staged or prepositioned on a regional basis. This type of reliable data can locate scarce resources to a latitude/longitude location to verify a trouble spot or be in the immediate area pending a utility response. If an ignition does occur, hopefully it can be controlled much faster than from a regional response location.

What are some strategies or methods you recommend for mitigating the risk of wildfires in areas with high-density electrical utility infrastructures?

It starts with a wildfire mitigation plan. These plans detail probable areas, control actions and updates to the infrastructure. Maintenance of the infrastructure is key and improves the system’s performance while reducing liabilities.

Identifying the probable areas of ignition also allows a utility to consider how they might want to restructure grids to lessen the impact of a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). Also, many utilities have created their own response capabilities ranging from watch patrols to firefighting resources. In addition to these steps, I strongly urge utilities and their respective fire response agencies to enhance their relationships.

What is your vision for the future of wildland fire prevention?

We are currently witnessing an increase in wildfires due primarily to extreme wind conditions. We are also seeing utilities doing an amazing amount of infrastructure upgrades. My vision is that we will see the utility caused wildfire data flip-flop as utility infrastructure improvements become reality.

How can we better educate the public and private sectors about these issues, and what role can they play in wildfire prevention?

We must provide an on-going education message that the wildfire challenges are not one entity’s issue, it is the collective challenge to government, private sector, and the public at all levels. We need to form a common bond that enables all of us to focus on the right solutions for our communities.

That being said, there are general guidelines that each community can use to address their specific challenges. We also need to understand that wildfires have been part of our ecosystems for centuries and we must learn to live with wildfires as part of our culture today and into the future.

Moscrop elaborates: “Rather than enforcing change, our aim is to make sure users willingly adopt Nimbus because they find it intuitive and effective.”

To achieve this, Black Rainbow consistently engages with user groups, including both seasoned Nimbus users and potential clients, to understand the current user experience and future needs.

By visually modelling and rapidly prototyping based on this feedback, they ensure the software is efficient whilst actually resonating with its audience.

This commitment extends to details as fundamental as terminology.

Given that different law enforcement units can have varying jargon, Nimbus allows for easy tweaks to its interface.

“A user shouldn’t have to adjust to a system; the system should adjust to them,” Moscrop asserts.

Accessibility is another area where Black Rainbow shines. Whether it’s custom themes or compatibility across devices, Nimbus offers users the flexibility to work their way.

“From dark mode to corporate colours, we want our users to view the software in a light that’s comfortable for them.

Simplifying the Submission Process

Beyond user experience, Nimbus also excels with its evidence submission portal.

The goal here is straightforward: make evidence submission as smooth and logical as possible.

“We’ve designed it in such a way that investigators don’t have to fumble around. They’re led through the process, with pre-populated fields ensuring accuracy and efficiency,” said Moscrop.

Moscrop stresses: “Officers shouldn’t have to wait to get back to the office. If they’re on a scene, they should be able to submit evidence right then and there.”

When talking about cross-departmental coordination, Nimbus stands out as a benchmark. Its advanced workflow engine ensures that processes transition smoothly across departments.

“It’s a web-based application. It can run on all sorts of devices. We’ve built it with an SQL Server, using MS, and there’s a service engine around it for cloud deployments, and various other technologies to help us adapt to that scalability or volume increase of data,” Moscrop details.

A primary focus for Moscrop and her team is the continuous integration of cutting-edge features: “One of the new product developments is Nimbus Intelligence.”

Firefighting foam: Local blending, global impact

Fredric Pettersson, Sales Director, Fire Safety Group, Perimeter Solutions looks at the new firefighting foam blending facility in Saudi Arabia

A secure supply chain has always been an important facet of international business, but the pandemic of 2020-2022 taught us all that the unexpected can happen and underscored the importance of close availability of mission critical materials.

Firefighting foam is said to be one of the most mission critical materials we have.

This is particularly true for the petroleum industry whose existence is based on storing and transporting highly flammable raw materials and end products.

As a fire safety company with more than 60 years of experience supplying our products in a timely manner to some of the most remote locations all over the world, Perimeter Solutions has developed a range of delivery and deployment capabilities.

For more than 15 years, as part of our continuing efforts to service our customers, Perimeter Solutions has served different local blending plants with super concentrates to manufacture local firefighting foam concentrates.

There are a number of benefits to local blending, but also concerns with maintaining consistency and quality far away from the quality control programs and procedures employed at a centralised manufacturing facility.

Perimeter Solutions collaborated with fire protection equipment supplier Saudi Sicli to open a new firefighting foam blending plant in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to support the Kingdom’s fire safety industry.

Nearly a year after its startup, this project has proven to be highly effective, and the experience can be instructive on how local blending programs can be implemented around the world.

Why local manufacturing of foam concentrates?

A secure supply of mission critical materials is one of the major reasons for local blending of firefighting foam concentrates.

All things being equal, companies around the world prefer to source locally if possible.

Local manufacturing has other benefits.

It builds infrastructure and supports local economic development.

It also has the potential to reduce total costs of goods delivered through enhanced production efficiencies, reduced transportation costs and the possibility of lower import costs.

Sourcing commodities and raw materials locally, while blending key materials at their point of use, is the perfect combination to assure availability of large quantities of product that are delivered to end users more quickly.

A leader in the Saudi Arabian fire safety industry

Headquartered in Jeddah, Saudi Sicli provides mechanical, electrical, and plumbing products and services to various government agencies and companies in the private sector, including railways, airports, seaports, water/electricity, defense, and industrial sectors.

The company specialises in the design, installation, operations and maintenance of firefighting, fire extinguishing and fire detection systems and equipment.

Saudi Sicli was the first company to supply certified premium firefighting foam in Saudi Arabia and has been helping to protect lives and property in the region for over four decades.

Challenges and solutions

Previously, Perimeter Solutions had been supplying Saudi Sicli with firefighting foam and equipment for nearly 15 years from facilities in Norway, the United States and northern Spain.

The overall goal of the new project was to supply a foam super concentrate blended into a standard foam concentrate using water and locally sourced chemicals.

This type of operation requires equipment systems, local expertise and the ability to tightly control finished product while continually monitoring quality.

The blending plant follows a process in which third-party bodies certify and authorise their manufacturing practices.

In 2021, Perimeter introduced a Mobile Blending Plant to accomplish these goals.

The mobile plant consists of two 40’ maritime containers that contain the means to blend, control quality and pack the foam concentrate.

The plant includes a quality control lab to assure the quality of local batches.

It is also fully automatised and can be controlled from Perimeter’s site in Spain.

The automatised system for blending and packing is managed by software that can: issue a work order specifying quantity and product type; add raw materials in the correct sequence and quantity; control the stirring speed and time; support the packaging by controlling recipient filling; and connect with Perimeter Solutions in Spain

All the data generated during the manufacturing process (sensors, video cameras, QC results, etc.) are transferred to Perimeter Solutions in real time.

The control room and quality control lab allow the manufacturing process to carry out quality control analysis.

Equipment includes: pH-meter, refractometer, densimeter, precision scales, surface tension meter, viscosimeter, digital thermometer, crystat, and other standard lab equipment.

At installation, Saudi Sicli personnel were trained by a Perimeter Solutions team in the operation of the facility.

During operation, every facet of the blending process is monitored and information is provided in real-time to Perimeter Solutions in Spain.

The facility allows Perimeter Solutions personnel to troubleshoot should it be necessary, and it can even be run remotely if required.

Once the equipment for the Mobile Blending Plant was delivered to the Saudi Sicli site, it was operational within a few months.

A ceremony to inaugurate the new blending plant was attended by leaders from Saudi Sicli and Perimeter Solutions as well as the Saudi Arabian ambassador of Spain, management from Saudi Aramco, representatives from the Saudi Arabia industry and infrastructure leaders from Modon, GACA, SEC, KAUST, and SAR.

Since operations first started, the plant has produced more than 800,000 liters of Perimeter Solutions firefighting foam products.

Fluorine-free technology leadership

Perimeter Solutions is today’s innovation and market leader in the development and implementation of effective, new fluorine-free firefighting foam technology, serving well-recognised end-users worldwide.

With R&D teams in North America and Europe, Perimeter Solutions is developing the next generation of high-performing fluorine-free Class B firefighting foams with new products introduced on a regular basis.

The Perimeter Solutions fluorine-free line contains foam concentrates suitable for use on most types of applications for both hydrocarbon and polar solvent fuel fires, training foam, specialty foams, and a complete line of Class A foam concentrates.

It includes products with certifications and approvals for commonly used systems and discharge devices.

Fluorine-free foam concentrate for the petroleum industry

In 2022, Perimeter Solutions introduced an alcohol-resistant firefighting foam concentrate developed specifically for the petroleum industry called SOLBERG® VERSAGARD™ 1×3 Multipurpose Fluorine-Free Foam Concentrate.

It is non-persistent, siloxane-free, and contains no intentionally added per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The foam concentrate is designed for extinguishing and securing both Class B (hydrocarbon fuel and polar solvent fuel) and deep-seated Class A Fires.

It is ideal for industrial emergency response and is used at multiple facilities that store crude oil on site.

Product testing has shown that SOLBERG VERSAGARD 1×3 foam concentrate performs similarly to AR-FFF products that are currently on the market, and several major multinational oil companies have already signed on to use SOLBERG VERSAGARD 1×3 in their transition programs to fluorine-free foam concentrates.

For a project of this magnitude to run smoothly, it takes a significant amount of technical expertise.

Colleagues from R&D, manufacturing, quality assurance, engineering, and business have to be perfectly synchronised and work together to execute the project successfully.

This is what Perimeter Solutions brings to the market in addition to flexibility and high-quality products.

Deploying new technology

The Perimeter Solutions Mobile Blending Plant currently in use by Saudi Sicli is an example of how the best technology can be delivered globally at the best cost with security of supply.

Can you explain the importance of ship safety management?

This is an exciting time for the maritime industry; we’re in a period of great change. There are key trends such as digitalisation and autonomous shipping driving the development of new and more advanced technologies.

At the same time, there is the drive towards greater sustainability, with the shift towards fuels that are more environmentally friendly, and the introduction of new legislative requirements to help reduce greenhouse emissions.

With new developments come new challenges. Each new or alternative fuel has its own safety risks and challenges.

For example, there is much discussion around effective fire suppression methods for methanol dual-fuelled ships, and for electrical propulsion systems with energy storage spaces.

The safe transportation of electrical vehicles and the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries is another focus area.

Furthermore, with autonomous shipping and the trend towards ships operating with fewer – or no – crew onboard, perhaps with operations being monitored from the shore, this then presents other safety risks and challenges that must be addressed.

Consequently, we see a greater need among ship owners and managers for solutions that can help to support crew with: Effective emergency procedures – i.e., procedures that are transparent and easy to follow; Early detection – to help identify changing conditions as early as possible to prevent a fire from happening; and Rapid response – to support fast and effective decision-making, especially in emergency situations.

How do traditional safety management methods fall short when it comes to contemporary needs of the maritime industry?

With the new fire risks and safety challenges associated with the new fuels and technologies of today, there is a renewed focus on fire prevention, and the possibility of detecting pre-fire conditions that can either allow for suitable preventive measures to be taken to avoid a fire from starting and/or that allows the crew to contain the fire more quickly and minimise damage.

We can also consider the number and complexity of the systems implemented on board a ship today, and the challenges this can present to crew.

A safety management system can potentially integrate different safety subsystems, allowing crew to manage them more easily and efficiently within one control system.

Diagnostics and preventive maintenance are also increasingly important, to ensure that the proper maintenance regimes are observed to keep safety systems running efficiently and to avoid any interruptions to service.

Remote support and monitoring services can also provide crew with fast access to expert technical support.

Systems can be monitored remotely – and even controlled, if required – from the shore, with the potential to log and track faults and analyse the data for insight on faults and/or behaviours.

What is SMARR-TI?

SMARR-TI stands for Safety Management And Rapid Response – Technology Interface. SMARR-TI is an interactive safety management solution that allows crew to monitor and control all their onboard fire safety systems – that is, their fire detection, fire prevention and fire suppression systems – within one integrated and easy-to-use solution.

SMARR-TI is unique in that it integrates both fire detection and fire suppression systems in one solution.

Currently, there is no other digitised safety monitoring solution that does this to such an extent.

How does the integration of fire detection and suppression systems contribute to enhanced safety onboard?

The aim is to give early warning of changes in a quick and effective way, and then to enable swift action to prevent a fire from happening.

A graphical visualisation of the fire systems on board the vessel is paired with real-time status updates and notifications, so crew receive early warning of any changing conditions.

In the event of a fault or alarm, crew has full visibility of the location of the alarm; the equipment at their disposal; and the ability to deploy systems automatically where possible, allowing them to take swift, decisive action to prevent or contain a fire, and protect onboard safety.

Can you talk about the interactive features of SMARR-TI?

In the event of a fire or an alarm, crew can see instantly where the alarm is located, visualised on the ship layout, and also the nature of the alarm (e.g., whether it’s the result of a technical fault or whether there is actually a fire).

Furthermore, they can select the protected space on the ship plan visualisation to see which equipment is available in that space; and then have the capability to activate a firefighting system within SMARR-TI by following the screen prompts.

All of these actions can be performed within SMARR-TI; all the information the crew needs is at their fingertips, thus shortening the time to action.

How does the SMARR-TI system supplement the SOLAS requirements for general arrangement plans onboard?

SOLAS Chapter II-2, Regulation 15.2.4 requires general arrangement plans to be permanently exhibited for the guidance of the ship’s officers.

These plans must show: structural fire prevention measures onboard ship (fire doors, fire zone barriers, etc); location of firefighting equipment; and how to access the different compartments & decks.

These are generally static plans, normally printed/mounted on walls, and supplemented by, e.g. instruction manuals for the different systems/equipment.

SMARR-TI supplements these general arrangement plans by providing a digital, interactive, graphical visualisation of the ship layout and all the structural fire prevention measures on board with Fire Detection & Suppression systems attached plus real-time alerts and notifications to alert crew of any changing conditions.

This means that not only can the crew see instantly where the alarm originates, they can also differentiate between e.g. a technical fault or the presence of smoke or flame.

The operating procedures for deployment of the firefighting systems can then also be displayed on screen, so the crew has all the information they need in one place to support quick and effective decision-making in the event of a fire.

Could you explain the specific role of SMARR-TI during a potential fire hazard?

Within SMARR-TI, crew members can receive instant notifications of technical faults impacting system delivery, such as faulty connections or interruptions to power.

They also receive warnings of pre-alarm conditions, such as temperatures exceeding predefined limits, or the presence of smoke or flame.

SMARR-TI allows them to distinguish immediately between routine maintenance issues and situations requiring an emergency response, so they can manage resources accordingly.

Furthermore, the crew can identify the precise location and exact nature of the alarm instantly on the ship plan visualisation.

They can also integrate and control their CCTV cameras within SMARR-TI, allowing for an immediate view of the affected zone and local areas.

This enables them to mobilise the crew more quickly and efficiently, equipped to take immediate, preventive action to secure the space and protect life.

Should there be a fire, crew members can immediately identify the safety systems at their disposal within the protected space.

They can then select a system within SMARR-TI and follow the step-by-step instructions displayed on screen to proceed towards deployment.

They can sound the alarm, close fire doors and fire dampers, shut down ventilation where necessary, and trigger signals to the public announcement and alarm monitoring systems, all within the same system.

The crew is also able to activate fire suppression systems, such as water mist, automatically, which reduces the time to deployment.

They can follow the operating procedures displayed on screen to guide them through system deployment, support effective decision-making, and reduce the risk of human error in high-stress situations.

The ultimate aim with SMARR-TI is to streamline firefighting operations and save valuable seconds or even minutes in an emergency, to help protect life and minimise damage.

Can you share your experience developing SMARR-TI alongside Turkish shipyard Tersan and Havila Voyages?

SMARR-TI was designed according to the requirements of Havila Shipping ASA, which had experience of similar systems from other suppliers.

The purpose behind building the application was to create a tool that could provide a graphical representation of the text information provided via their dedicated fire detection system.

From the start, it was made clear that this information should be presented clearly and effectively so that it should be immediately apparent to crew when there was an alarm/notification requiring their attention.

SMARR-TI was designed to depict both the location of the fire and the fire extinguishing system available for use, and then also allow for that fire extinguishing system to be released remotely where possible, with crew able to follow operating instructions presented on screen.

Most importantly, the required actions at each stage had to be intuitive and efficient: the application had to be simple and easy to use and to facilitate swift, decisive action.

What are Survitec’s future plans for the expansion of SMARR-TI?

The official launch of SMARR-TI at Nor-shipping in June generated a lot of interest, and we have had many interesting discussions, not only with shipowners and shipyards, but also with other technology providers and suppliers of fire solutions who are interested in the potential of SMARR-TI to support additional safety features and systems. 

Today we have SMARR-TI Mark-1, which integrates Fire Detection & Fire Suppression systems, however we have many other ideas on how we can further develop SMARR-TI, to support effective and efficient safety management – for example, the integration of loose fire equipment (information on location and servicing requirements); support for monitoring fire patrols; and, of course, the integration of other safety systems – to highlight just a few of the ideas that are currently on our radar.

The future of firefighter training with FLAIM

James Mullins, Chief Technical Officer at FLAIM Systems gives us a glimpse in the vitality of VR firefighter training

In the fast-paced world of emergency services, continuous training is not just a requirement but a vital necessity.

Firefighters, in particular, must repeatedly train to respond to the unpredictable nature of fires, ensuring they are always prepared for the unexpected.

IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey caught up with James Mullins, Chief Technology Officer at FLAIM Systems to find out more about how virtual reality training is shaping the sector.

As a third-generation volunteer firefighter in Australia, Mullins’s connection with the fire industry runs deep.

His educational journey took him from a small country town in Australia to the grand halls of a university, where he pursued an engineering degree.

Not one to stop at just that, he delved directly into a PhD, focusing on soft tissue modelling and simulation.

His childhood fascination with robots coupled with his academic pursuits saw him collaborate with defence sectors on robotics.

It was this blend of personal passion and academic inclination that birthed FLAIM Systems.

Mullins paints a vivid picture: “I was starting to see how virtual immersive environments can be used for training soldiers on the battlefield.

“In Australia, we were beginning to close down some of our hot fire training rounds due to PFAS/PFOA contamination from firefighting foams and some pretty harmful chemicals that were burnt over the years.”

Recognising a need and sensing an opportunity, he combined his deep-seated love for firefighting with his expertise in robotics and virtual training.

This resulted in the proof of concept for a revolutionary hot fire training system.

When Mullins showcased this system using an HTC VR headset, the reaction was phenomenal.

He reminisces: “We went viral in the firefighting nerd community… We hit about 1.6 million YouTube hits in a week as a result of that.”

From humble beginnings in a university research centre, FLAIM Systems underwent rapid growth: “Since then, we’ve gone from literally one or two people in a shed to a team of about 43, in about the same number of countries.

“We’re in about 45 countries around the world with our technology.”

But what is the guiding principle behind FLAIM’s groundbreaking training solution? Mullins is clear about its intent: “This technology is certainly not designed to replace any traditional workflow training systems that are out there.”

He explains that despite the advancements FLAIM offers, it is not a replacement but an augmentation.

In a world where hot fire training events might only come around once every few years, FLAIM’s system aims to bridge the skill fade that could occur between such training intervals.

The focus is on regular 15-30 minute micro-learning sessions that keep skills fresh and always at the ready.

Realistic firefighter training scenarios

Mullins delves into the nuances that set their system apart, describing how a virtual immersive environment is beneficial: “Virtual immersive gives the opportunity to have a conversation in a cleaner environment, allowing an instructor to view through the trainee’s eyes – we get some really powerful insights from that.”

Mullins’s description paints a vivid picture of how trainees react.

The rookies, with tunnel vision, contrast starkly with the seasoned firefighter’s broader contextual grasp.

The ability of their system to simulate scenarios such as structural collapses, some logistically unfeasible in traditional training, is an added boon.

Ensuring realism in their training scenarios is no minor feat.

Mullins shares the intricacies of their development process: “We do a lot of AV testing. I think we’re at about 50-60,000 hours worth of code time to create our simulation platforms.”

On the realism of virtual training, he says that whilst achieving 100% accuracy in simulating real fires is improbable, their use of CFD (computational fluid dynamics) packages provides as close to reality as computationally possible.

Mullins shares their partnership efforts, mentioning a collaboration with a Fire Department in California and even NASA to model and understand fire behaviour comprehensively.

The feedback loop with firefighters continuously hones their system, with Mullins noting the importance of understanding the unique experiences of firefighters to simulate them virtually: “Senior firefighters really like sharing fire experiences, and our system is a way of allowing those senior firefighters to share that experience with hundreds or 1000s of firefighters around the world.”

This is especially vital in areas with limited exposure to hot fire training environments.

Mullins provides a hands-on description of a typical training scenario, vividly illustrating the process.

After setting up, which takes around ten minutes, a trainee immerses himself in a comprehensive simulation.

The scenarios are vast, ranging from residential neighbourhoods to oil refineries or a ship at sea.

Each scenario is hyper-realistic. Mullins describes: “You’ll crack open your hose line and you’ll be pulled backward, feel the heat intensity.

“If you’re in a residential environment, you’ll open a door, and the smoke level will increase.”

The attention to detail is immense, from water droplets on a helmet reducing visibility to simulating flashovers necessitating rapid reaction.

Casualties in the environment add another layer of realism, and Mullins emphasises the biometric monitoring to measure trainee stress and reactions.

He emphasises the inbuilt benefits of safety and repeatability in VR training: “We try and create as much realism as possible in the environment, but you’re in a safe environment, not exposed to carcinogens.”

The future of firefighter training

When discussing a future in which FLAIM positions itself in this rapidly advancing landscape, Mullins’s perspective on is as practical as it is visionary, pointing to the dynamic intersection of tradition and technology.

“It is challenging to introduce a technology like this into the fire service,” Mullins says, candidly expressing the hurdles of introducing cutting-edge technology into a historically traditional profession.

Drawing a parallel with the evolving attitude towards PPE, he reflects: “It’s the same as PPE – everyone wanted dirty PPE. Now the perception is completely different: clean cab, clean gear.”

Mullins’s focus on cleaner training, especially in light of health risks to instructors, is evident.

“This is another tool to give instructors the ability to get some level of training to firefighters without exposure,” he explains.

Unveiling FLAIM’s future plans, he reveals plans to launch a multi-user team training options.

The potential applications of this are vast and could see firefighters from around the world, training together, under the tutelage of globally renowned experts.

Another key venture has been in aiding those with PTSD. As Mullins describes, the technology could be used to: “slowly either inoculate people before they experience them, or bring them back by slowly reintroducing some of these stresses to their environment”.

As for FLAIM’s direction, Mullins is clear about their position in the larger context. “We’ve been simulating fires for training in some capacity for a long time. VR is just another type of simulation.”

Mullins advocates for a blended approach to learning, underscoring the potential of their technology as an invaluable tool.

A promising aspect of FLAIM’s system is its data-centric approach. As Mullins rightly points out, there are tasks in the firefighting realm that are not often practiced, leading to skills fade.

By gathering data, FLAIM can actively track and provide tailored training recommendations: “We can trend and track and analyse and we can start to push out recommendations on what training is needed.”

On what’s next for FLAIM, Mullins introduces the concept of a digital scorecard: “Effectively, it will say ‘Here is what you’ve got right, here’s a couple of things that maybe you want to brush up on the next time we see you in the system.”

FLAIM Systems is revolutionising fire training with its immersive virtual technology, adeptly merging the traditional firefighting ethos with cutting-edge advancements.

Fire protective clothing: Finding the best fit

Nik Blymiller, MSA Safety Product Group Manager for Fire Protective Clothing, highlights the evolution of firefighter PPE

Where do things currently stand with fire protective gear across the fire industry and the latest trends you are seeing?

We’ve been seeing the market evolve over the years and the roles firefighters are playing in responding to all different kinds of incidents, not just house fires.

Today, technical rescue situations are becoming more prominent, like during wildland fires and flooding, and we’re also seeing a desire for garments that can perform across new and different scenarios.

It’s these kinds of trends that are driving innovation and diversity in the fire protective clothing market.

The market used to desire having one set of garments that were suitable for everything, but customers have been calling for change.

We’re working to develop new solutions in our fire protective clothing offerings to address these changes.

Not every firefighter is built in the same way.

How is customer feedback incorporated into fire protection clothing design?

Customer feedback is imperative to what we do and how we work to design and deliver new protective firefighting equipment.

MSA Safety and its affiliates, like Globe Manufacturing Company and MSA Bristol, invest heavily in Voice of Customer (VOC) activities during the product development process, and that is critical in firefighter product development.

We work closely with customers throughout their selection, evaluation and tender process to ensure we’re putting forth a garment and solution that aligns with their needs.

That can include different fabric combinations, designs, trims, pockets, whatever it might be.

The flexibility that Globe and Bristol offer is what makes them differentiators in the fire protective clothing industry.

We see that with just the number of different fabric combinations and garment styles that Globe and Bristol can provide.

We’re seeing a move toward lighter, more flexible material, and we’re getting more requests for comfort shields.

Additionally, working through our service Care Teams, we are able to use real life wear experience to design common repairs that can help optimise the cost of ownership.

What efforts are being made to accommodate the diverse physical builds of firefighters?

When it comes to fitting firefighters for protective clothing, we have an array of solutions, whether it’s our MSA Bristol or Globe fire protective clothing.

We offer a wide range of sizes, both male and female, for chest and waist widths, along with five different height groups ranging from extra short to extra tall.

All of our styles are available in women’s fit, which is important as we see the number of women in the fire service continue to grow.

Ultimately, it’s about helping firefighters find their best fit and so they can concentrate on safely doing their jobs.

If you have the feeling that something with a garment is stopping you or is uncomfortable or is physically restrictive, it might be time to consider the latest options.

Layer combinations are becoming lighter and more flexible and there is also the desire for gear that looks nice, as well.

What recent developments have impacted fire protection clothing?

It is well documented that there has been a rise in the frequency and intensity of wildland fires.

We’re seeing a demand for more flexible PPE that allows firefighters to fight those types of incidents in a way that can help reduce or prevent excess heat stress or burden on their person while they’re fighting such fires.

As we speak with customers, we’re hearing more about the different kinds of PPE needed for these types of wildland responses.

To develop solutions for these situations, we’re looking at balancing appropriate levels of thermal protection, particulate protection, heat stress and garment weight for these responses.

A second lesson is about the diversity in the type of firefighter. We are seeing more women and diverse firefighters.

As such, we’re working to make sure we offer products that work effectively to help protect firefighters across a wide range of body types and sizes.

How are hygiene and maintenance aspects being balanced with PPE design?

Cleanability and serviceability are two important factors we look at when designing PPE for firefighters.

In the United Kingdom we offer the Bristol Care managed service, which gives us the ability to help maintain garments for our customers.

We’re also looking at ways to help more of our US fire and rescue customers care for their gear because, after all, purchasing fire protective clothing is an investment and having longevity in protective gear is important.

In addition, observing best practices in cleaning is an important way that our fire and rescue customers can help protect themselves against exposures in the field, so helping to streamline that process can really add value.

We also take attention to selecting trims and seam tapes that can help reduce or prevent particulates from being trapped in the clothing.

For example, we heat seal labels for turnouts with a heat activated adhesive. This eliminates stitching and gives a smoother surface that’s easier to clean.

These tapes also tend to be lighter, more supple and breathable in challenging environments.

How is MSA Bristol staying on top of evolving rules and standards?

MSA Bristol is actively engaged with the various standards organisations, including EN, NFPA and ISO.

We work with these standards making organisations and help provide input on areas like the latest technology and trends in fire protective clothing.

By working through leading laboratories and approval bodies, we ensure our products meet the standards that our customers expect.

Exploring Ziamatic’s new Heavy Rescue Tool Mounts and their impact on firefighting

When it comes to mounting heavy rescue tools, Ziamatic is a top player in the game.

The Yardley, Pennsylvania based company offers over a dozen heavy rescue tool mounting solutions for firefighters – from the Single Extrication Tool Holder (QM-ETS-1) to the more recently available Heavy Rescue Tool Mounts.

Durability

For Ziamatic, durability is the name of the game with the newest mounts being made of tough HDPE material.

“We chose this because of its strength and durability,” says Creely.

“HDPE is also gentle on equipment. Being plastic, one will not see corrosion nor will they have any dissimilar metal issues.”

Ziamatic’s new Heavy Rescue Tool Mounts are a great example.

The brackets of the tool use mounts made of HDPE material and are designed to store most extrication tools available to fire departments today.

The mounts are most effective when combined with one of the brackets from Ziamatic’s SURE-GRIP product line.

The Heavy Rescue Tool Mounts have been rigorously tested by receiving free falling weight drops of 60 pounds, over 100 times in a row to assure they will withstand the day-to-day use of firefighting.

They are tested with a maximum 5″ spacing using 3/8″ fasteners (not included).

Easy to use design

Ziamatic also offers another mounting option with its popular Multiple Extrication Tool Holder.

Firefighters can secure up to four extrication tools in minimal space with this easy-to-use “Lazy Susan” rotating platform.

Adjustable mounting brackets accommodate most brands of cutter, spreader, and combination tool – including both hydraulic and battery-powered models.

Users can simply press down on the easily accessible yellow paddle to disengage the lock and rotate the turntable to access the tool they need.

Ziamatic offers other rescue tool mounting solutions. Runtime is measured from the initial light output value (30 seconds after the light is turned on with fresh batteries) until the light output drops to 10% of the initial value, measured in hours.

Light output may gradually decrease over time or remain largely constant and then suddenly drop out. A runtime graph, if available, provides the best illustration of the performance of a light over time.

As for brightness, this is measured in ‘lumens’ and stands for the total quantity of emitted light energy from the light source on its highest setting, powered by new or fully charged batteries.

Flashlights can range from lumens in the single digits (great for reading a book) to a terrain-scorching 10,000 lumens.

While these values represent a great comparison tool, they do not tell the whole story about brightness, with beam intensity, distance and type all influencing the effectiveness of a light in different applications.

Of course, the better the technology, the longer the runtime – so even the brightest of flashlights can operate for lengthy periods.

Indeed, this is one factor that will affect the broad price range for what might initially appear to be similar products.

The Streamlight Vulcan® 180 HAZ-LO® ATEX is such a product that falls into that territory, offering a runtime of 16.5 hours while providing 450 lumens of light – enough to flood a whole room.

An aesthetically similar lantern may be half the price, but if it only delivers 40 lumens for 10-hours, it would not be suitable for much other than dimly illuminating a pathway, as it likely won’t offer different modes nor will it perform well in bad weather or hazardous atmospheres.

Batteries: disposable vs chargeable

Power source should be at the top of your checklist when choosing a flashlight, either by way of disposable or rechargeable batteries.

Disposable batteries, either alkaline or lithium, have an excellent storage life – 7 and 10 years respectively.

They generally offer longer runtimes for a given bulb power, are typically lower in initial purchase price, and spares are readily available.

In the long run though, operating costs are considerably higher than rechargeable alternatives.

Rechargeable flashlight batteries can feature extraordinarily low operating expenses – as little as a penny per day – and are well suited for frequent use.

Depending on the model, they often store conveniently in custom charger holders.

Their initial purchase price can be higher, but considerable cost savings are seen over the total life of ownership.

High-performance lights, like our PolyTac 90® X USB, can operate with different fuel type batteries or work as a rechargeable system using universal connections.

As such, these can be plugged into charging ports safely to ensure they are fully powered before every operation.

As with other rechargeable flashlights, the initial purchase price is understandably higher, but there are significant cost savings over the total life of ownership.

You should also look to source devices with battery life indicators. We include them on many of our models, conveniently located inside the button to highlight when batteries need replacing or recharging.

Knowing your device has ample power is one less thing to focus on in an emergency.

LED types

LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) offer the flexibility to adjust a flashlight’s output and beam patterns to meet a multitude of needs.

LEDs are of a solid-state construction offering a high-intensity light which lasts up to 100,000 hours.

“Chip On Board” (COB) LEDs are made of multiple LED chips that are packaged together as one lighting module.

When it lights up, it looks more like a lighting panel than multiple individual lights for a smooth, flood beam for up-close work.

Flashlights offering a combination of LEDs and COB LEDs provide a multi-function solution to provide much greater flexibility for the task at hand.

An example would be our Dualie® series of flashlights, which feature dual lighting modes to offer convenient spot and flood lighting from the same device.

This is an intrinsically safe flashlight which allows you to light up what is ahead of you and at your feet at the same time or individually, over long periods of time.

Lighting modes

Having more than one lighting intensity setting can be the difference between success and failure on many levels.

When everything goes to plan, a fixed intensity flashlight can likely stand up to a task for a couple hours.

However, if other factors arise, which they often do, changing between low and high intensity can extend the use of a flashlight considerably, lasting from dusk till dawn with constant use.

Looking at our Survivor® X ATEX model again, this features a high, super bright beam that delivers 250 lumens over 447m with a runtime of 3.75 hours.

Its low mode, on the other hand, delivers 60 lumens over 237m but increases the runtime up to 15 hours.

It also features a flash mode for signalling (8-hour runtime). Lighting modes can also allow you to switch between flood beams – for less intense light over a bigger area – or spot beams – intense light focused on a narrow subject over a greater distance.

Safety ratings

There are several types of locations where it can be extremely dangerous to use any light that has not been specifically designed – and approved – for that location.

Areas such as those with flammable gases, liquids, vapours, or fibres present, which could lead to catastrophic explosions, are incredibly dangerous with the wrong lighting tool.

It is critical that you have a safety-rated flashlight you can trust to operate in these atmospheres, such as our HAZ-LO Division 1 and ATEX safety-rated series.

The options are pretty endless, and this can make your final choice quite difficult, but with thorough understanding, a light that balances the cost against the specification is out there for you.

Editor’s Comment: Chances and opportunities

I recently returned from the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Conference and Expo in Kansas City, Missouri where I was afforded many opportunities to enhance my knowledge and understanding of new technology and innovation on display, writes IFSJ Managing Editor Duncan J. White.

Having joined the UK fire service at the age of eighteen, with the sole intention of driving big red lorries and wearing breathing apparatus to fight fires, I very quickly realised that there was much more to being ‘just a firefighter’ if you are prepared to take your chances and explore the opportunities offered.

Within a couple of years, I became frustrated with the management style of my immediate superiors and decided that if I wanted to influence change, I would need to pass my promotion examinations and apply for promotion.

With each promotion came additional responsibilities as well as more frequent and varied opportunities to move into new roles, which provided a more rounded understanding of the running of a modern fire and rescue service / fire department (FRS).

Despite undertaking several roles during my career which included incident commander, specialist trainer, project manager and supervisory officer I never felt my true potential was being nurtured or even understood by the organisation.

I became bored and to make best use of my time undertook voluntary roles, one of which afforded me the opportunity to attend fire trade shows.

This opportunity presented me with the opportunity to learn about another side of the industry and I soon received a commercial opportunity, which resulted in me setting up my own company and becoming a freelance consultant, alongside my fire service career.

I once heard a client comment: “Anyone working with a fire service should secure the services of an insider who knows the industry as it ensures that no questions are left unanswered, and all requirements can be understood and taken into consideration.”

There have been times when I was not always sure if I had the necessary skills or experience to fulfil opportunities but have always remembered a quote made by Sir Richard Branson, “If someone offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later.”

This has proven to be extremely valuable!

I retired after almost thirty years’ service; however, throughout my time I was never afforded an appraisal which specifically looked at my transferrable skills which could have been of benefit to the FRS.

This was disappointing, although more concerning is that it seems like this is still the norm today and skilled people are being pigeonholed by rank / role rather than utilising their skills to best effect for the organisation.

For the fire service to remain an attractive career option it must look at new ways to get the best out of employees by implementing remuneration structures which allows them to reward staff who choose to specialise in one area or use their skills for the good of the FRS rather than continually changing roles because they are chasing the next promotion.

Never underestimate the demoralising and disruptive effect that boredom can have on the most aspirational members of your team.

Exclusive: ASFP Chair Clive Miles talks the future of fire protection

Clive Miles, newly appointed Chair of the ASFP, is heralding a focus on excellence, innovation, and addressing workforce concerns

In the historic setting of Hatfield House, Hertfordshire, on the 7th of June, the Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) welcomed Clive Miles of CLM Fireproofing as its new Chair and celebrated the landmark appointment of Sharon McClure of Avesta Scotland as its first female Vice Chair.

The torch was passed from Chris Miles, marking the end of his commendable two-year term.

Having etched his mark on some of the UK’s most renowned buildings with three decades of experience in delivering passive fire protection solutions, Miles is no stranger to the intricacies of the passive fire protection (PFP) sector.

With a fervour for excellence, Clive’s vision for the ASFP is one that underscores best practices, relentless innovation, and a staunch commitment to people development.

In a candid response to his appointment, Clive Miles articulated the looming challenges on the horizon for the industry, accentuating the seismic shifts brought about by various pressures – from legislative mandates and media scrutiny to the undeniable crunch of skill shortages.

As he put it: “Our response to these challenges must be agile, forward-thinking, and innovative.”

He also highlighted the pressing issue of an ageing workforce in the industry, urging for proactive measures to attract the next generation of professionals.

Advocating for structured training, apprenticeships, and outreach programmes, Miles envisions the ASFP as the gold standard in ‘educational best practice’ for the industry.

IFSJ sat down with Clive Miles to journey through nearly four decades of changes, challenges, and transformation within the PFP sector.

Miles’ accounts, punctuated by his personal experiences, give us an intimate look into the industry’s evolution.

Can you share your industry background and its key milestones?

I have been working in the passive fire protection industry for 38 years. I founded CLM Fireproofing Systems Limited in 1989 and here we are 24 years later.

Key milestones for CLM were being awarded the refurbishment of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

This project demonstrated that we could complete challenging and complex large projects.

We then went on to win the Shard which cemented us as a tall buildings specialist.

Obviously, a more recent key milestone for all of us has been the Grenfell tragedy which continues to change and shape our industry. 

What major changes have you seen in your 30 years?

Three decades sounds like a lifetime.

When I first became involved in the industry, cementitious and mineral fibre sprays were the dominant products used for structural fire protection.

We then saw a massive shift in the 90s towards mineral fibre boards before intumescent coatings really took over as the choice for steel frames.

Firestopping has also developed massively since the 90s, becoming much more complex.

However, the biggest changes I have observed are in attitude towards passive fire protection.

We are in an era where people are beginning to listen to what many of us have been talking about for years –competence and compliance.

There is no longer a drive to the bottom within construction projects, with much greater emphasis now placed on quality.

There is still a long way to go, but at long last things are changing and the attitude towards our industry and how crucial it is in the construction process is changing.

Why did you decide to stand for ASFP Chair?

We have a very straightforward process at the ASFP for the role of Chair and Vice-Chair.

The Vice Chair is voted in by Council and serves for two years in this role before becoming Chair for a further two year term.

I originally stood for Council and then as Vice Chair as I wanted to try and give something back to our industry.

As an association, it is important that we engage with the membership and encourage more of the members to become involved in the activities of the Association.

It’s the best way to grow and improve as an association.

You are succeeding Chris Miles after his two-year term – are there any initiatives from his term that you plan to build upon?

Chris Miles has a very different background to mine, coming from a testing and compliance background rather than contracting.

So, it’s been a useful time working with Chris and understanding his drivers within the industry.

During his tenure we introduced a new CEO to the ASFP from outside of our industry but who had a deep understanding of associations.

This proved extremely successful.

We have also sourced and purchased our own building which is due to open later this year.

The new building has classroom and training facilities, which will perfectly facilitate my plans to introduce and develop a greater emphasis on education to our sector.

What are the main challenges in the industry and how will the ASFP tackle them?

I think that we all recognise that the construction industry stands on the precipice of great change and opportunity; driven by both legislative and technological advancements.

Our sector is particularly affected by this change in the form of:

  • The Building Safety Act, which has given rise to the Golden Thread meaning a greater reliance on technology
  • Increased pressures from legislation, media coverage, insurances, and skill shortages; driving unprecedented transformation in our market.

This means our industry, the ASFP and our members must evolve in new and innovative ways to adapt to this new, ever-changing world.

As an Association I believe we need to focus on three key areas to address the significant change which is coming and maximise the opportunity.

Over the next two years, I will focus on technology, skill shortages, and knowledge sharing.

How can we address the industry’s ageing workforce and skills shortage?

YouGov research shows that only 3% of people between 18-24 searched for a job in construction.

The industry is suffering both from an ageing workforce and a skills shortage.

More needs to be done to attract and retain young fire protection professionals.

The ASFP aims to inspire and secure the next generation of our profession through a combination of apprenticeships, academies, and outreach programmes.

How do you aim to set ASFP as the standard for ‘educational best practice’ in PFP?

Following the Building Safety Act, there has been an increased demand for competent and qualified Fire Safety professionals.

By creating and implementing new ways to train, engage and promote passive fire protection, we can ensure the ASFP becomes the industry benchmark for ‘educational best practice’.

How will you encourage innovation in PFP as Chair? Any initiatives in mind?

Both legislative demands and digital advancements are driving innovation in the construction sector, but also specifically within passive fire protection.

The rise of BIM, the increased reliance on digital recording and even Virtual Reality are changing the way we interact with clients, products, environments, and end users.

The ASFP and our members need to be at the forefront of this digital transformation.

We need to produce guidance around what this digital transformation should look like.

The future of fire protection

The persistent issue of an ageing workforce, paired with a prevalent skills shortage, presents a formidable challenge for the construction and fire protection industry.

With a wealth of seasoned professionals nearing retirement, the industry finds itself at a pivotal juncture.

The repercussions of not addressing this gap are significant, as both expertise and invaluable hands-on experience risk being lost.

More than just a matter of numbers, this deficit underscores the urgency for a rejuvenated focus on attracting fresh talent and investing in their training.

Industry bodies and associations, such as the ASFP, have an instrumental role to play, paving the way for a future where the legacy of current professionals is handed down and built upon by the next generation.

Miles’ insights into the impending challenges—be it the industry’s ageing workforce, the impending technological advancements, or the shifting paradigms of compliance and competence—paint a picture of a sector standing on the cusp of substantial change.

And while Miles charts the course, the introduction of Sharon McClure as the Vice Chair serves as a beacon of the rising diversity and the promise of a fresh perspective in leadership.

With leaders like Miles and McClure at the helm, the ASFP appears poised to lead the sector into a future where safety, competency, and innovation are not just ideals, but ingrained practices.

The implications for the broader fire and safety industry are profound; as standards rise and best practices evolve, the bar is set higher, promising safer, more resilient constructions for all.

As Miles put it: “Our industry, the ASFP and our members must evolve in new and innovative ways to adapt to this new, ever-changing world.”

Sharon McClure

While Clive sets the strategic direction, Sharon McClure, with her vast experience since 2006 and an active role on the ASFP Council, is poised to play an instrumental role in reshaping the PFP landscape.

Her focus? Championing competency, quality, and timely consideration of passive fire and other crucial construction elements.

“The construction industry has come a long way with regards diversity and inclusivity,” says Miles.

“This has been helped in the main by encouraging new young talent into the industry. The increase in diversity and inclusivity has been driven in part by the need for talented people.

“Our industry is no different.”

Speaking on McClure’s appointment, he says: “We are beginning to see some brilliant talent coming up through the ASFP and our membership.

“Sharon is an extremely talented Operations Director at her own company, Avesta Scotland Ltd, which is a contractor member of the ASFP.

“Sharon has been voted onto Council for several continuous years and was unanimously voted by Council to become Vice Chair earlier this year.

!This will mean that Sharon will become Chair of the ASFP in two years’ time.

“This is a positive direction for the Association and will hopefully encourage even greater diversity and engagement from our membership.”
