Can you tell us about your recent appointment at Nightstick and what led you to this position?

Coming from SaaS marketing, I intentionally sought out a digital based role with an emphasis on content creation to carve my niche.

I saw over and over that the Nightstick team did things a little differently, which is extremely exciting.

From their social responsibility to an emphasis on open communication and continuous development, the foundation is solid.

While providing digital services for customer engagement is noble, equipping firefighters and first responders with life-saving tools certainly tipped the scale for me.

What expertise do you bring to the table, and how will this strengthen Nightstick’s position in the fire and safety market?

With a background in content marketing, video production, and having a millennial’s perspective on today’s digital landscape, I bring a creative, intentional approach to gather increased awareness to the established Nightstick LED portable lighting lineup.

Being able to build relationships with departments and volunteers alike through visual and print media, the fire and safety market is put on notice: there’s a new chief in town.

How will your appointment influence Nightstick’s strategic direction?

With an already expansive and established product line-up for fire and rescue at Nightstick, I am here to supercharge Nightstick’s marketing reach while leveraging the significant growth that comes along with global brand recognition.

Alongside a student mentality, taking the time to acquire field expertise and conducting proper research will lead me to focus on creating relative content that consistently educates and engages the fire and rescue audience.

Can you share any specific initiatives or changes that you will be spearheading?

Conducting in-depth market research will be priority one. I will analyse industry trends and customer feedback to identify areas of opportunity and respond with lightning speed.

My role is to stay ahead of the curve and deliver solutions that meet evolving needs.

Building strategic partnerships and collaborations will also be instrumental.

I carry the torch to expand Nightstick’s cultural history of collaboration with fire departments, rescue organisations, and industry associations.

These partnership opportunities are as vast as they are globally diverse.

What are the biggest challenges currently facing the fire and rescue industry?

Smaller divisions have limited budgets and resources compared to larger sectors. This makes it challenging to invest in R&D, upgrade equipment, or afford the latest technology.

Let’s face it: the fire industry is steeped in loyalty and tradition. Access to safety innovative products should not be a concern.

The prevailing mindset of “how it’s always been” is my job to destroy, along with the notion that one should depend on inferior legacy equipment from entrenched brands.

Nightstick has a 40-year history in lighting innovation, so I will promote knowledge sharing and offer scalable solutions regardless of department size or awareness.

Are there any new solutions coming from Nightstick for the fire and safety sector?

Nightstick was, is, and remains the originator of Dual-Light technology.

By combining multiple beam patterns of light, Nightstick incorporates a floodlight for proximity illumination with a traditional spotlight for smoke-cutting distance illumination.

Purpose based directional lighting allows firefighters and first responders to move quickly and assuredly, while being aware of any possible slips or trips in the heat of the moment.

Against this backdrop, organisations like Operation Florian take centre stage, operating at the intersection of emergency response, humanitarian aid, and community resilience.

 Founded in 1994, this UK-based charity has been at the forefront of efforts to bridge the divide in fire and rescue services across the globe, a challenge that becomes more pressing in the wake of conflicts, natural disasters, and economic downturns.

IFSJ sat down with Operation Florian to delve deep into its story, explore its mission, strategy, and modus operandi.

 Through this conversation with the team behind the scenes, we unpack how this organisation navigates the convoluted landscape of global aid, identifying and responding to needs for fire and rescue services with both agility and compassion.

Can you provide a brief overview of what Operation Florian is?

In 1993, a fire engine was donated to the Island of Brac during the Homeland War in the former Yugoslavia in order to ensure the safety of refugees and the local population.

 After the donation, our charity founder, Steve Owen Hughes, invited fire brigades around the UK to work together to organise more donations.

 A year later the charity was formed and was named after St Florian, the patron saint of firefighters.

How has the mission of Operation Florian evolved since its inception?

Operation Florian’s mission has expanded over time.

 Initially focused on providing fire equipment and training to the former Yugoslavia to assist with the safety of refugees and local communities, it has now garnered international interest and extended its support to countries like Paraguay, Chile, Zimbabwe and many more.

How does Operation Florian identify fire and rescue services that need help?

Requests for help come from various sources, often stemming from conflicts, natural disasters, and economic downturns.

 Ukraine serves as a good example.

 Operation Florian provides donated equipment and comprehensive training to rebuild Fire and Rescue Services in affected areas.

What sources of funding support the charity’s activities?

Funding for Operation Florian comes from diverse channels, ranging from dog walking to international funding streams.

 Individuals and organisations can contribute through avenues such as JustGiving, car washing events, guest speaker contributions, and collaboration with other charities like Save the Children and Rotary International.

Can you share any memorable success stories?

In Harare City, firefighters trained and equipped by Operation Florian responded to a fire in an illegal Ethylene plant.

 Despite facing a subsequent explosion, thanks to the training and protective gear donated by Operation Florian, the firefighters survived and continue to make a great recovery despite being severely injured in the incident.

Operation Florian re-equipped and trained the fire service of Srebrenica in Bosnia (the scene of some atrocious war crimes).

 There was only one factory that had been restored after the resettlement and return program had started and this was the main source of economy.

 Within weeks of establishment, the local fire service was able to save the factory from destruction by fire.

Are there any partnerships with local or international organisations that are integral to Operation Florian’s work?

Operation Florian collaborates with numerous organisations worldwide, including all UK Fire and Rescue Services, Rotary International, International Aid UK, Children in Need, the UK Government and Fire Aid just to name a few!

What are some of the challenges Operation Florian has faced?

Operational challenges include dealing with restrictive border crossings, navigating bureaucratic red tape, and encountering customs delays and unjust financial penalties due to corruption.

 Mechanical issues also arise but are overcome with resourcefulness and a problem-solving attitude by our volunteers.

What are Operation Florian’s plans and goals for the next 5-10 years?

We are currently reviewing our Strategic Plan and aim to attract and mentor younger members to assume strategic roles, gradually replacing the more experienced members.

Operation Florian welcomes volunteers with diverse skill sets.

Opportunities for involvement include fundraising, project planning, logistics support (loading and driving), administration, public relations, and more.

 Firefighting experience is not a requirement.

The rise of remote fire panel monitoring

Advanced’s Digital Product Manager, Michael Dunbar, unveils the evolution of remote fire panel monitoring

Smart buildings are on the rise and with them comes increasingly sophisticated remote monitoring technology – with the fire safety industry being the latest to see new developments.

 According to Jupiter Research, the number of smart buildings globally is expected to rise from 45 million in 2022 to 115 million in 2026.

 This is welcome news for facilities managers (FMs) and fire alarm engineers who recognise the benefits and efficiencies remote monitoring can bring, including improved safety and time savings.

Efficiency

In recent years the IoT (Internet of Things) has enabled the collection of digital data from physical assets and processes, resulting in greater efficiency.

 Remote monitoring has significantly advanced the capabilities and efficiencies of FMs with the expansion of internet-connected devices making it possible to remotely communicate, collect and analyse data without being on site.

Following extensive customer research, remote fire panel monitoring platforms such as AdvancedLive have been designed specifically to meet the needs of FMs by combining fire system monitoring, instant notifications, and remote fire system control in one software.

 These subscription-based platforms allow users to both view and control elements of their fire system from any internet-enabled device, at any location.

Crucially, users can only control a fire panel if they have permission to do so.

 With data security more important than ever, the latest software gives admins complete control over who can access their system.

 Flexible login methods to offer fast, secure access without the need to remember yet another password but also an automatic link timeout for added security.

 Actions taken by individuals are stored in a comprehensive log, allowing traceability and compliance.

Fire alarm engineer

Remote monitoring platforms also benefit engineers.

 Traditionally, if an engineer wanted to gain knowledge of how a fire system has been operating, they could only access the limited information stored in the event log.

 With the latest remote monitoring technology, all the data is hosted in the Cloud.

 This gives engineers the benefit of a real-time view of a fire system, as well as access to historical views of data.

 This insight can then be used to predict potential issues, improving both fire safety and system efficiency.

It is possible to view a panel’s complete device history, including when the device was last activated, isolated, tested and enabled, allowing engineers to troubleshoot the problem remotely or diagnose issues in advance to save time if a site visit is required.

 It is also possible to identify trends and potential issues, enabling better service and maintenance planning, and allowing preventive action before issues escalate.

Future

As remote fire system monitoring develops, there is huge scope for both FMs and engineers to benefit.

 Not only will data be increasingly used in reports for compliance but also for intelligence and predictions.

Although the initial market for these platforms has been large complex sites, smaller businesses will also benefit in the long-term.

 This will be useful where a business owner is also in charge of the facilities management and is not able to always be on site.

Thermal Imaging: The indispensable tool of firefighting

Firefighting is no ordinary profession; it requires individuals to exhibit exceptional bravery, dedication, and resilience, often in the face of overwhelming danger. Beyond this personal commitment, effective firefighting also necessitates the availability and utilisation of appropriate, sophisticated equipment. In this respect, few tools have been as transformative for the profession as the advent of thermal imaging technology.

Thermal imaging tools give firefighters the ability to ‘see’ in conditions where visibility is severely compromised or practically non-existent – such as in pitch darkness, smoke-filled environments, or areas with intense heat. This level of visibility allows them to conduct their operations more safely, without needing to physically feel their way through a burning building or having to predict a fire’s movements based on its visible behaviour alone.

The enhanced visibility offered by thermal imaging extends to a variety of crucial tasks that firefighters must undertake. One of the most important of these is tracking the progress of a fire. Understanding how a fire is spreading, where the hottest areas are, and what materials or structures might be fuelling its spread are all critical pieces of information that firefighters can leverage to strategize their approach and operations.

In addition, thermal imaging can help firefighters identify hidden hotspots or embers that might not be immediately visible to the naked eye. These could be behind walls, beneath floors, or in the ceilings. Detecting and extinguishing these hidden sources of heat can prevent a fire from reigniting after it has been seemingly extinguished.

Since their introduction, thermal imaging cameras have moved from being an experimental tool to an indispensable part of the firefighter’s toolkit. Their impact on the profession is irrefutable, and their usage is now considered standard in fire departments around the world. As we mark the tenth anniversary of Teledyne FLIR’s K-series thermal imaging cameras, it is clear that these tools have revolutionized the field of firefighting. IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey spoke to Peter Dekkers, Director Global Business Development, First Responders to discuss Thermal Imaging and Teledyne FLIR’s K-Series.

Can you briefly introduce us to the world of thermal imaging and its importance in today’s industrial and firefighting applications?

Thermal imaging is a technology which allows you to visualize the thermal signature of a person, object, structure, vehicle, or anything It does not depend on light such as the sun or a lamp, so you will see in pitch dark conditions. And most importantly, you will see through smoke and can read the temperature of the scene. In firefighting, a thermal imager is a portable viewer, which is used by the firefighter to navigate through smoke or in dark environments.

What are the primary applications of Thermal Imaging Cameras, especially in the realm of firefighting?

A Thermal Imaging Camera, also called TIC, is a very versatile piece of equipment. Before entering a burning building, you’ll assess the exterior and decide on your plan for entering it. The prime use is fire attack, where you use the TIC to navigate your way in a building to the fire source and start controlling it.

The critical application is for search and rescue operations in burning, smoke-filled buildings, where you will use the TIC to locate and save persons, animals and other valuable. After the fire, the TIC is used to monitor if fire has been extinguished properly or whether there are still existing hotspots.

Can you take us through the journey of Teledyne’s K-Series thermal imaging cameras?

Thermal imaging has been used in the fire service since the 1990s. However, due to the high investment, technical limitations and overall unawareness at that time, the technology was not widely used. Some 10 years ago we wanted to break that circle and decided to enter the market with a much more affordable, but high-performance TIC. This step would allow fire departments across the globe to greatly expand or otherwise start using thermal imaging in their daily practices, helping them to fight fires and rescue people in faster and much more effective ways.

How did the development of the K-series thermal imaging cameras address the unique needs of firefighting professionals?

A TIC is a complex piece of equipment, as it needs to perform in the harshest conditions. Already from the inception of the development process we teamed up with firefighters from different countries to learn about how they operate, how they move, how they communicate, how they are trained; learn about their challenges etc. This helped us defining the shape, the video modes, the buttons and more. The K-Series is truly designed with the firefighter in mind in terms of usability and video image interpretation.

How did the evolution of the K-Series contribute to the disruption of the market for thermal imagers for firefighting?

Thermal imaging is a prime technology and is therefore also costly. Since we as FLIR own the technology, we had the opportunity to introduce the K-Series at a much better price. This not only helped fire departments scaling their TIC programs, but also forced other players in the market to focus more on price and performance.

How do the features of K-series cameras differentiate from a general-purpose or industrial thermal imaging camera?

Industrial cameras usually operate in a very controlled environment for a very specific purpose. This is far different for fire TICs. The conditions are very extreme, from cold to extreme heat, water, dust, steam, dirt, shock, vibration, and so on. Due to these circumstances, one should be able to use the TIC intuitively, therefore the operating is very straightforward. The IR image has specific colourisation which will help the firefighter to better interpret the situation and so the person can make faster and better decisions.

How has the thermal imaging technology evolved over time?

Thermal imaging has become mainstream in most of the firefighting community. This is very positive, because more lives will be saved, and property damages can be reduced greatly. With the wider use, come higher expectations. Users want a better and easier to interpret image, simplicity and reliability. That, for example, is the reason why we’ve put a lot of effort into our FSX technology, which gives you a much crisper image, so you can make a more educated decision.

Can you comment on the impact of K-series thermal imaging cameras on firefighting and emergency response?

Since so many firefighters are trained and are using TICs in their daily operations, the eagerness to learn more about thermal behaviour, fire dynamics etc. is increasing. Therefore, we put a lot of effort in having the best and most detailed image possible. Thanks to the FLIR K-Series, TICs are nowadays not just seen as devices to see hot-spots, but are an integral part of any fire or rescue mission.

What can we expect from Teledyne FLIR in the coming years in terms of innovation and product development?

A thermal imaging camera today is as good as its operator. We are working on technologies and innovation to move some of the decision-making challenges from the firefighter to the device – to the TIC itself. With that, the firefighter can concentrate more on other aspects in the harsh environment they are working in.

Can you tell us about the inception of the Pro-Alert 480 system, what inspired its creation, and what problems it was designed to address?

In 2003, there was a horrible fire in Chicago and 6 people lost their lives when they found themselves trapped in a smoky stairwell when the doors locked behind them.

There were no sprinklers, no two-way communications, and no safe way to communicate their location to emergency personnel.

The ordinance gave high-rises a choice of retrofitting for sprinklers or installing alternative safety features, such as fire-resistant stairwell doors and frames, and one- and two-way voice communication systems.

As of 2013, virtually none of the building owners had opted for sprinklers.

This highlighted the need for Area of Rescue systems.

Jeron was already leading the way in designing and manufacturing communications platforms that could had clear, non-blocking audio for many stations across a wide variety of big and small environments.

How does the Pro-Alert 480 system operate during an emergency and what sets it apart from other similar systems?

During an emergency, when a building occupant can’t evacuate on their own, they will go to an area of refuge location and utilise the Pro-Alert 480 system to alert first responders of their location with direct communication.

With a push of button on a remote station, a call is placed.  

If the Area of Rescue system is not monitored on-site, the Pro-Alert 480 system automatically routes the emergency call to an off-site, security monitoring location through an automated phone call using a standard telephone line, Voice over IP, or a cell network. 

Emergency personnel are made aware of the location(s) of the person(s) in need.

Differentiators of the Pro-Alert 480 system include: First AOR system listed under the new UL2525 standard; listed by Underwriters Laboratories; Standardised CAT cabling throughout; Daisey-chain head-end to remote station wiring – no costly home-run wiring; Fully supervised to ensure always available and proper operation- all remote stations, consoles, and remote alerting phone output; Embedded firmware architecture designed for 24/7/365 operation – no PC or servers are required to run the system; Designed and manufactured in the USA – ready to ship complete systems, no delays.

Why is the Pro-Alert 480 system important for the occupants in a high-rise building or a commercial facility during emergencies like a fire?

During a fire emergency, a high-rise building’s elevator shaft acts like a chimney and fills with smoke, subsequently they are turned off by emergency personnel.

Therefore, remote AOR stations should be placed in every stairwell above the ground floor.

Occupants in distress, who can’t evacuate the building on their own, must be able to contact first responders in an emergency. 

This system can be used in virtually any commercial, industrial, or institutional setting where instant, high-speed, clear communication is needed. 

Occupants must have a way to evacuate the building safely in an emergency. 

Occupants who cannot traverse the stairs need assistance during emergencies when the elevators are shut down.

Could you explain how Pro-Alert 480 facilitates clear communication between occupants and first responders?

A press of a button starts the clear, two-way, audio-visual communications.

A person places the call from a remote station and the non-blocking two-way communications begin.

When a call for assistance is placed from a remote call station, a solid green “call placed” LED illuminates and an alert tone pulses once to verify the call placed.

At the console, the LCD display shows the location of the calling station by programmed area, and the alert tone sounds.

The console displays multiple calls simultaneously.

Through programming, the remote level threshold can be lowered or increased to allow clear communication with the console.

The console also has three internal potentiometers that allow the adjustment over various volume levels.

How does the system ensure the safety of those who are unable to evacuate the building during an emergency?

The system ensures safety by Pro-Alert adhering to the requirements of the local and international codes in force. 

The experts set the standards by years and years of life safety experiences of what to do and what not to do – an everchanging system all designed to create a secure environment.

Jeron’s alerting and communications systems are specifically designed to meet the Area of Rescue Assistance communication requirements as defined in the American Disabilities Act.

During an emergency in commercial and multi-story residential buildings, residents can use Pro-Alert to call for assistance and communicate with first responders from a designated Area of Refuge.

In addition, Pro-Alert 480 has continuous diagnostic testing to ensure reliability.

Could you tell us more about the Pro-Alert 480s advanced features?

At the Console, the LCD display shows the location of the calling station by number and location.

The Console displays multiple calls simultaneously and Jeron Consoles provide the ability to see 4 calls, 8 calls and with our touchscreen console…up to 128 simultaneously.

Calls displayed on the Jeron Console and if not answered in a predetermined time, the calls are transfer off site using a land line, Voice over IP, or a cell phone network, to a Remote Monitoring Station or 911 Operator. 

The operator will hear the Global address and remote station location including the building name and address.

This message is repeated until the operator presses any DTMF (dual tone multi-frequency) number to establish two-way communication with the caller at the remote station in the Area of Rescue location.

Is the Pro-Alert 480 compliant with various regulations and codes?

Pro-Alert 480 fulfills all necessary requirements set by IBC, ADA, NFPA72, UL2525, NFPA101, and local building codes.

It provides a reliable two-way communication system, adhering to specific design and operation parameters outlined in these codes, and ensuring safety during emergencies, especially for those unable to use stairs.

How do you ensure the quality and reliability of the Pro-Alert 480? How do FDA registration and UL listing contribute to this assurance?

Jeron maintains strict documentation of manufacturing processes as required by FDA. The system is fully tested and certified by UL, as per the UL2525 standard, which is a third-party validation of its quality and reliability.

The company upholds rigorous standards throughout research, development, production, and distribution to meet customer and regulatory demands.

Six years after the Grenfell tragedy in June 2017, significant changes have been made to fire safety legislation, building regulations, standards and codes of practice.

Notable among them is the recent requirement for evacuation alert systems in all newly built high-rise residential buildings in England.

These systems are separate from fire detection and alarm systems.

Evacuation alert systems are designed for use by Fire & Rescue Services (FRS) as a ‘last resort’ measure when the ‘stay put’ strategy fails.

This may occur due to factors like a wind-driven fire or simultaneous fires within the same building.

These systems enable the FRS to warn occupants of flats to evacuate immediately in a controlled manner without physically knocking on doors.

This saves time and allows the FRS to prioritise critical evacuation areas, reducing the need to deploy firefighters for evacuation purposes.

Evolving standards and legislation

In response to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 1 report, the Scottish government recommended the installation of evacuation alert systems in new residential buildings that are 18 metres tall and higher.

This necessitated the creation of a standard, BS 8629: 2019, to ensure the effectiveness of these systems when installed.

Amendments to this standard were considered just two years later and introduced in March 2023, reflecting the evolving nature of this fire safety measure.

In England, separate amendments to the Building Regulations (Approved Document B) came into effect on December 1, 2022.

These amendments require the installation of evacuation alert systems in all new high-rise residential buildings taller than 18 metres.

Existing buildings of this height that undergo substantial alterations in the future also fall under these requirements.

However, similar requirements currently do not cover Wales or Northern Ireland.

Those responsible for the fire safety of approximately 12,500 high-rise residential buildings in England are being warned to comply with the incoming legal requirements under the Building Safety Act 2022.

They have a six-month period, starting from April 1 2023, to register with the new Building Safety Regulator established in response to the Grenfell Tower fire to protect residents from unsafe building practices in England.

The Building Safety Act defines “higher-risk” buildings as those that are 18 metres tall or higher, or at least seven storeys with two or more residential units.

The HSE’s ‘Be Ready’ campaign is alerting “accountable persons” (e.g.

building owners, freeholders or management companies) that they must comply with the Act by October 2023 or face investigation and potential prosecution.

Considering the evolving regulatory landscape and the focus on the evacuation of tall buildings, interest in evacuation alert equipment is expected to intensify.

It is essential to emphasise that evacuation alert systems should not be used as compensation for any reduction in fire protection measures, or as mitigation for construction defects such as inadequate fire compartmentation within a building.

Evacuation alert systems typically consist of secured evacuation alert control and indication equipment.

These systems include manual controls for the Fire & Rescue Service to operate enabling evacuation alert sounders in groups of flats, as well as in areas like gyms, restaurants and roof gardens that may also need to be evacuated.

Provisions for those with disabilities may include visual alert systems, vibrating pillow pads and vibrating pagers.

Issues such as the integrity of evacuation alert systems are addressed in BS 8629, which covers both wired and wireless systems.

For example, all wiring must be enhanced to ensure the system operates during a prolonged fire, while wireless radio systems must demonstrate the same reliability as wired configurations.

Competent oversight

A designated member of the premises’ management team should be appointed to supervise all elements.

Their responsibilities include ensuring the FRS is aware of, and familiar with, the system, and that residents understand the need to evacuate if the alert devices activate.

System logs (paper or electronic) must be maintained and monthly visual inspections undertaken.

Each system should be inspected, tested and supervised by a competent person every six months, which includes renewing the system’s certificate of compliance.

If this is neglected, the system will no longer be compliant with BS 8629, making ‘Duty holders’ vulnerable to potential prosecution, and may also render insurance invalid.

BAFE’s Evacuation Alert Systems Scheme SP207 was launched in 2020 following a thorough development process in conjunction with the fire safety industry and FRS.

 Compliance with the scheme through third party certification enables system installation and maintenance contractors to independently demonstrate their competence.

As one of the industry bodies involved in the scheme’s inception and development, NSI was the first certification body to be licensed by BAFE for SP207, in October 2020.

As the scheme is modular, companies can gain third-party certification from NSI for one or more modules they provide i.e. the design, installation, commissioning and/or maintenance of systems.

Looking ahead

As all aspects of fire safety continue to be affected by tightening requirements, evacuation alert systems are likely to become an increasingly familiar sight in high-rise residential buildings, particularly if their scope is widened in future by law to include lower height blocks of flats.

Is there a difference between Intrinsically Safe and Explosion Proof?

When considering LED lighting procurement geared for safety, it is essential to grasp the differences between Explosion-Proof (Ex) and Intrinsically Safe (IS) lighting products.

BIOEX was founded in 1998 within the LEADER Group. The name of the company means BIO EXCTINCTION.

From its beginning, BIOEX goal has been to provide efficient, environmentally friendly solutions to extinguish fires to save lives and property.

BIOEX is the pioneer in fluorine-free foams, introducing the first multipurpose fluorine-free foam in the industrial fire service market in 2002: ECOPOL was born.

BIOEX uses its extensive experience and comprehensive long understanding of industrial fire risks, to provide eco-friendly foams for efficient fire extinguishment and burn-back resistance.

Since 2002, we have been developing a wide range of fluorine-free foams effective on class A and class B hydrocarbon and polar solvent fires, are and certified under international standards, such as EN1568, UL162, LASTFIRE, IMO, ICAO and more.

Can you explain how your products align with your commitment to ecological responsibility?

BIOEX designs efficient products to control the fire quickly, and limit fire damages and loss.

Additionally, BIOEX range of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) free products are environmentally friendly.

They are made of bio based raw materials to limit the impact of foam spreading into the environment.

They do not contain fluorinated surfactants, nor siloxane.

Those firefighting foams are biodegradable and do not persist in the environment.

Part of our range of product is GreenScreen certified, the first ecolabel for firefighting foams.

What drove the development of your recent products, ECOPOL 3N and ECOPOL 3 Premium UL?

Our team of engineers and PhDs is constantly developing and improving processes of searching for new raw materials with lower impact on the environment and testing new efficient formulations.

Our latest formulations do not contain fluorinated surfactants.

Our lab team also works on reducing firefighting foam viscosity to optimise foam mixing equipment compatibility and to avoid any issue when mixing the foam.

How do the properties of ECOPOL 3N combat hydrocarbon fires effectively?

ECOPOL 3N forms a foam blanket made of thousands of bubbles, which spread over the flammable liquid.

The foam blanket has enough fluid to seal the fuel on fire.

It makes a physical barrier between the fuel and the surrounding air, enough thickness to block fuel vapours and oxygen supply.

Depending on the nature of the fuel, the foam blanket offers cooling features that also contribute to the extinguishment process.

The firefighting foam is applicable by direct and indirect application, avoiding foam blanket contamination by the fuel fire.

ECOPOL 3N robust foam blanket offers a long drainage time to ensure any residual fuel does not re-ignite.

This class B fluorine-free foam offers similar performances to traditional Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) 3%.

How does the compatibility of ECOPOL 3N with existing equipment benefit your customers?

ECOPOL 3N viscosity is like most AFFF 3%, that is to say, liquid.

This requires no change on foam proportioner equipment and settings.

It makes the transition easier from traditional fluorinated foams to fluorine-free foams.

What sets ECOPOL 3 Premium UL apart in its efficiency on different types of fires?

ECOPOL 3 Premium UL is a Synthetic Alcohol Resistant Fluorine-Free Foam (AR-FFF).

This multipurpose foam is efficient on several fuels (alcohol, ethanol, acetone, methanol and so on) and is applicable at 3% on hydrocarbon fire, and 3% polar solvent fires, as well as class A fires.

ECOPOL 3 Premium UL is UL 162 listed.

The formulation of this pseudoplastic foam has low viscosity.

This gives it a significant advantage and makes it easy to mix with most of foam equipment.

What is your vision for the future of firefighting foams, given the trend towards SFFFs?

The fire industry is globally moving towards the transition to Fluorine-Free Foam.

Some in many different fire service industries have already chosen to use environmentally friendly foams and have been using them for their fire protection for decades.

The speed of the global transition mainly depends on the regulation on the country/area and the type of activity.

By doing numerous fire tests and data collection, high quality fluorine-free foams have proven that they are effective on fires, on several fuel types with different discharging and mixing equipment.

They offer similar fire performances as with traditional AFFF foams.

What are your thoughts on the global shift to fluorine-free foam in fire safety practices? How are you helping clients manage the transition to fluorine-free foam?

Since 2002, BIOEX has been supporting its customers with the transition from traditional foams to fluorine-free foams.

We support fire departments and brigades, industries, airports, ships and fire engineers in this transition, worldwide.

The implementation of fluorine-free foam will necessitate careful consideration as a project to undertake.

This process will involve various tasks such as remediation, emptying, cleaning, and disposal.

Adequate time and training will be required to ensure a smooth transition before the regulations enforce its prohibition.

Ultra Fog’s water mist fire suppression systems offer robust, effective, and meticulously engineered solutions for applications that demand optimal fire suppression while minimising water consumption.

The magic begins with our high-pressure pumps, which forcefully propel water through our stainless-steel Ultra Fog water mist nozzles.

As a result, the water is transformed into millions of minuscule droplets typically ranging from 30 to 200 μm in diameter.

A single litre of water in this mist form generates around 4 billion droplets, covering a total surface area of 75-sq m.

When the system is activated, this deluge of water mist creates a protective blanket that maximises heat absorption from the fire, while the subsequent evaporation and expansion of the mist into steam effectively displaces oxygen.

Unlike traditional sprinkler systems, our water mist solution leverages the mist’s ability to present a significantly larger water surface area, facilitating rapid heat absorption.

Moreover, the mist remains suspended in the air for an extended duration, granting more time for heat absorption to take effect.

As a result, Ultra Fog systems cool and suppress fires while utilising considerably less water than conventional sprinkler systems.
