Eight members of the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) have been awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) as part of the Australia Day Honours.

The AFSM, established in 1988, acknowledges individuals who have shown distinguished service and commitment as members of Australian fire services.

According to the NSW Rural Fire Service, the eight recipients were recognised for their dedication, leadership, and contributions during critical emergencies, including the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires.

NIFRS launches recruitment drive across 43 stations in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) is inviting individuals living or working within five minutes of their local fire station to apply for roles as on-call firefighters.

On-call firefighters work part-time, responding to emergency incidents in their communities through a pager system.

This recruitment campaign spans 43 stations across Northern Ireland, including Antrim, Armagh, Ballycastle, Ballyclare, Ballynahinch, Banbridge, Enniskillen, Newry, and more.

David Doherty, NIFRS Western Area Commander, emphasised the critical role of on-call firefighters: “Our On-Call Firefighters are the cornerstone of our Fire & Rescue Service.

“They provide emergency response to their local communities 24/7, 365 days a year.”

Key requirements and training opportunities

The role is suited to individuals who live or work near their local fire station, have a strong sense of community, and are physically fit.

No prior experience is required, as NIFRS provides comprehensive training at its new Learning & Development College in Cookstown.

The training facility enables recruits to develop their skills and competence in a first-class environment.

Successful candidates participate in a 12-day annual training programme and weekly drill nights to maintain the highest professional standards.

Doherty added: “If you are successful, you will be joining NIFRS at a really exciting time.

Home Office and IBM partner on Emergency Services Network

Frontline emergency services will benefit from a new communications network, as the government announces a new partnership with IBM following a series of delays by previous suppliers. 

The Emergency Services Network (ESN) will support more than 300,000 emergency responders in Great Britain, providing them with better technology and faster access to data in emergency situations and frontline operations. 

Police forces, fire services and ambulance trusts will be able to share live data and imagery, location reports and essential public safety information as they work on time-critical rescue and response efforts. 

After several delays to the rollout of ESN over recent years, the government is committing to delivering the project as quickly as possible, helping to save lives as a result. The Policing Minister, Dame Diana Johnson, will chair regular meetings to ensure the project is running to time and cost.

Providing the emergency services with improved technology is a key part of the government’s drive to make the nation’s streets safer, which is a crucial part of the Prime Minister’s Plan for Change.

Features of the software

Software for new handheld devices will provide data-sharing functions and real-time video features, providing personnel with the critical information they need to save lives, as well as a push-to-talk protocol for instant communications. 

One real-world example of how the network could work is in a serious road traffic collision:

  • The first service to arrive would be able share their exact location using GPS data with the other services
  • Fire services would be instantly updated with the make and model of vehicle, which can then be cross-referenced with data on how to best use cutting equipment, if someone was trapped, or where batteries are located on electric cars
  • They could also update paramedics with passenger details to check medical information and determine if there is anything they need to know such as prior medical conditions
  • This would greatly speed up dealing with the incident and the ability to aid the victims involved

Led by the Home Office, ESN will implement the next generation of fast, safe and secure voice, video, and data communication, allowing emergency services to work in tandem and coordinate efforts when protecting and aiding members of the public. 

Similar technology has already been rolled out with success in countries including the USA, Canada and South Korea.

As the new user services supplier, IBM will be responsible for leading the design, build and system integration of the ESN platform.

Key to achieving this will be IBM’s delivery of IT infrastructure, which will be fundamental to ensuring improved and more efficient communication capabilities for mission-critical services.

S Jones Containers provide Cardiff Uni racing team with specialist unit

Container conversion company, S Jones Containers, has provided Cardiff University’s School of Engineering with a bespoke, secure battery testing and storage unit for its Formula Student team, Cardiff Racing.

The specialist container is used to safely store and charge batteries for Cardiff University’s Formula Student racing team, which is made up of students from across the engineering degree disciplines.

Cardiff Racing competes every year in the Formula Student (FSUK) competition, which tasks teams to design, build and race a single-seater race car, and became the first British team to win FSUK in 2017. The team is making the leap to electric racing cars making battery safety paramount.

Features of the unit

As the unit is located on the university’s busy city centre campus in close proximity to other buildings, S Jones Conversions Division incorporated additional safety elements as part of the design, such as fire-rated materials throughout to make sure the entire container is fire rated from inside to out to give 60 minutes of fire resistance, and installing three phases of electrics – all with surge protection.

The 10ft container, which was converted at S Jones Containers’ specialist workshop in the West Midlands, was also fitted with an external isolator and a powerful 5KW HVAC unit – deliberately oversized to keep the equipment cool at all times.

The new battery testing and storage unit also features a super strong steel 60 Min Fire Rated Door and doorset and is securely locked with S Jones Containers’ own heavy duty patented Contain-A-Lock® system which is corrosion resistant and tamper proof.

The unit was spray-painted to a dark olive green shade to blend with its surroundings. It took just four weeks from initial design to completion, ready to deliver to campus.

This is the second project S Jones Conversions Division has completed for Cardiff University. A few years ago, the team created a specialist battery testing and storage unit for the university as part of a previous research project at the Centre of Research into Energy, Waste and Environment.

London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe has informed Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan of his decision to retire after serving five years in the role.

As reported by London Fire Brigade, Commissioner Roe expressed pride in leading the service during a transformative period: “It has been an honour and a privilege to lead London Fire Brigade.

“When I became Commissioner, I inherited a service suffering from decades of under investment.”

He highlighted improvements in emergency response and organisational culture during his tenure.

The Greater London Authority (GLA) has commenced the process of selecting a successor.

The timeline for Commissioner Roe’s departure and the appointment of his replacement will be announced in due course.

Major achievements under Commissioner Andy Roe

Since assuming his role in January 2020, Commissioner Roe has overseen significant reforms, particularly in response to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) has implemented all 29 Phase One recommendations from the Inquiry, marking a major milestone.

Under his leadership, LFB introduced enhanced training in high-rise firefighting and emergency evacuations, deployed advanced equipment such as drones and turntable ladders, and improved its response to terrorist incidents.

Improving culture within London Fire Brigade

Commissioner Roe prioritised cultural reform within LFB, commissioning an Independent Culture Review and introducing new organisational Values.

Measures included establishing a Professional Standards Unit and an independent reporting line for staff concerns.

The Brigade also engaged with communities through the creation of a Community Forum, which involved survivors of major incidents such as the Grenfell Tower fire.

This initiative aimed to improve LFB’s post-incident response and accountability.

Leading during challenging times

Commissioner Roe’s tenure began during the global pandemic, a period that presented unprecedented challenges.

LFB played a critical role in supporting London’s emergency services, with 500 firefighters seconded to the London Ambulance Service and millions of PPE items delivered to communities.

Reflecting on his time in the role, Commissioner Roe said: “I never imagined when I joined LFB 23 years ago as a firefighter that I would have the honour of serving as London Fire Commissioner. I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved.”
