LION has highlighted the Elbeco UFX Bold Uniform, a duty apparel system designed for law enforcement and public safety personnel working in demanding field roles.

The collection was developed to meet the physical and operational demands of modern fieldwork while maintaining a consistent professional appearance.

The range includes a zip mock neck shirt, a collared patrol shirt and cargo trousers.

The collection uses a stretch-ripstop fabric made with 50 percent nylon.

The material is intended to support movement during patrol work, tactical response and extended periods on foot.

LION states that the fabric is breathable and designed to promote airflow during long shifts in changing conditions.

The garments also include permanent nano moisture-wicking technology intended to move moisture away from the body during operational duties.

Construction and storage features

In its description of the range, LION states that the UFX Bold collection incorporates reinforced construction at high-stress areas to extend garment life during daily wear.

The fabric is designed to resist fading and degradation over time so departments can maintain a consistent appearance across their uniformed personnel.

Easy-care performance materials are also intended to reduce maintenance requirements.

The garments have been patterned to support movement while keeping a professional appearance.

Design features include underarm mesh vents to improve airflow, along with a smooth neckline intended to reduce irritation when garments are worn under protective equipment.

Stretch waistbands are included for comfort when worn with duty belts.

Reinforced pockets, magnetic closures and internal organisers are designed to keep equipment secure and accessible.

Semmco LPS highlights risks across prisons marine and freight rail

Semmco LPS highlights risks ahead of Health and Safety Event

Semmco Life Protection Systems (Semmco LPS), which will attend the Health and Safety Event at Birmingham NEC from 28 to 30 April 2026 at Stand 3/G1, has outlined how changing working environments are creating new risks across multiple sectors.

Semmco LPS said procedural changes, new materials and technologies, and developments in cleaner energy and electric transport are contributing to these risks.

Escape breathing apparatus was described as a regulatory requirement in relevant working environments and as equipment used to support safe evacuation from hazardous or oxygen deficient conditions.

Semmco LPS designs and manufactures short duration breathing apparatus intended for escape and working rescue in confined spaces and extreme environments.

Sector examples including prisons shipping and freight rail

Semmco LPS cited the prison system as one example, stating that 2,287 fires in prison cells were recorded in 2023.

Eighty percent of these incidents were attributed to vape pens.

Semmco LPS is working with HM Prison and Probation Service to provide its HEAD RPE/CSRE (Cell Snatch Rescue Equipment) escape breathing sets to prisons across England and Wales.

The contract includes user training and a managed refurb and maintenance programme.

Semmco LPS also referenced the global shipment of electric vehicles onboard ships and cited increased awareness of battery fire dangers during transport.

In freight rail transport, the company described the highest risks as being linked to hazardous goods and materials.

Semmco LPS said recent legislation changes in the USA mandate that EEBDs be available to employees working in freight train cabs transporting hazardous material “that would pose an inhalation hazard in the event of release during an accident.”

Product specifications and manufacturing expansion

Semmco LPS said its EEBD is a self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus with a 15 minute duration and no fit testing requirement.

Both the HEAD and EEBD devices are head worn short duration escape sets using potassium superoxide (KO2).

The products provide a constant oxygen supply for the duration required to escape hazardous environments.

Semmco LPS has opened a new manufacturing facility in Woking Surrey with dedicated production pods and a service and refurbishment area for the HEAD product.

Semmco LPS will exhibit at Stand 3/G1 at Birmingham NEC from 28 to 30 April 2026.

Meiko marks 10,000th M-iQ machine milestone in Offenburg

Meiko reaches 10,000 M-iQ machines

Meiko has completed the 10,000th machine in its M-iQ range, with the anniversary unit set for use at Gate Gourmet in Copenhagen Airport.

The machine was completed last December at the company’s headquarters in Offenburg, Germany.

It will operate as an M-iQ Cup machine capable of washing up to 10,500 reusable cups an hour.

Rapid and hygienic turnaround is important in airline and event catering where reusable items must return to service quickly.

The M-iQ conveyor dishwashing range was first launched in 2009 and introduced to the market the following year at Europa-Park.

During that launch event the Ehrlich Brothers, a German magic duo, presented the machine live on stage to an international audience of industry experts.

Since then the series has been developed with versions designed for different sectors that require high throughput washing systems.

Recent additions include the M iFlow IPB automation module, which was introduced to help address staff shortages and increase operational efficiency.

The company is also studying applications of AI-supported automation within the range.

Meiko technology is also used in sectors that require high standards of hygiene for specialist equipment, including systems used to wash firefighter personal protective equipment and breathing apparatus components.

Meiko marks the milestone in Germany and Denmark

Employees gathered in Offenburg on 22 January for a “warewashing festival” to mark the completion of the 10,000th M-iQ machine.

The event included a winter barbecue and a gathering in the company restaurant despite temperatures of -2°C.

Dr.-Ing. Thomas Peukert, CEO of the Meiko Group, said: “Internally, the project was known as MGM, which in German stands for the ‘mother of all large machines’, whereby “mother” referred to the platform concept realised for large machines.

“And the launch was a truly memorable event – technically challenging, it attracted international attention and kept the audience in suspense until the very last moment.”

“The M-iQ is an example of teamwork at its best,” he added.

The anniversary machine was formally handed over in Denmark at the end of January.

At the beginning of February, representatives from Gate Gourmet’s headquarters in Zurich visited Offenburg where they received a miniature model of the machine alongside a certificate of appreciation.

Peukert said: “We were keen for Gate Gourmet to share in the celebrations.

“And we wanted to thank them for the close partnership between our two companies.”

The visit connected the production milestone in Offenburg with the machine’s installation for catering operations at Copenhagen Airport.

Putting PPE into practice: LION EMEA maps 2026 priorities

Fire and rescue organisations face increasing pressure to modernise equipment and training while keeping crews protected, compliant and available for response.

Decisions around PPE, training systems and maintenance are now closely linked, particularly as services respond to changing risk profiles and greater scrutiny of firefighter exposure during operations and training.

LION EMEA works across training solutions, EN-certified PPE and lifecycle support through its TotalCare services.

As the company prepares for 2026 and the return of INTERSCHUTZ, it is aligning new product launches with a more connected, operational approach.

IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey spoke with Anne-Lise Artaud, Marketing Manager at LION EMEA, about how the company is preparing for the year ahead.

LION works across training, PPE and service support.

How do these areas connect in practice?

If you only work in one area, you tend to stay within that box.

People often look at turnout gear on its own or training solutions on their own, and those perspectives are not always aligned.

Training is sometimes treated as secondary, even though it has a direct impact on safety, performance and long-term health.

When fire services buy turnout gear, the focus is usually on protection, durability and keeping firefighters safe over time.

With training solutions, the focus is more on preparedness, efficiency and improving decision-making.

These priorities are related but they are not the same, and they are often handled by different people within an organisation.

With our 3-pillar approach (Training Solutions, Protective Equipment (PPE), TotalCare service), LION proposed solutions across all three areas: training, PPE and service support, we can step back and look at the full firefighter journey.

We see how decisions in one area affect another and how equipment, training environments and maintenance interact over time.

That broader view helps us understand what customers want, why they want it and how different choices connect.

A clear example is the link between training environments and PPE.

In some training centres, firefighters may be exposed to high heat more frequently than during real incidents, depending on the types of interventions they attend.

Because we work closely with both training facilities and PPE, we see those patterns more often and understand how they affect equipment performance and firefighter safety over time.

Bringing these areas together helps ensure training, PPE and service support are connected in a practical, operational way.

What are LION EMEA’s main priorities and activities for 2026?

2026 is a very important year for us, particularly with the return of INTERSCHUTZ.

After the disruption of recent years, being back at the event is significant.

It is an opportunity to show where we are as a company, how the portfolio has evolved and what we are focusing on going forward.

Beyond INTERSCHUTZ itself, several priorities are shaping our plans.

One is health and safety for firefighters, trainers and trainees.

The challenge is balancing realistic training with protecting health over the short term and across an entire career.

On the training side, we are focusing on healthier ways to train, reducing unnecessary exposure while maintaining realism.

That means looking closely at wood burning, gas consumption and how training environments are designed and operated.

Another priority is PPE.

We are re-entering the European market with our own EN-certified turnout gear.

This is something we have been working towards for some time, and we are now at the point where the gear is in stock and customers are actively testing it through pilot programmes.

For the LION Group globally, this completes an important part of the overall portfolio.

2026 is about increasing momentum, getting the gear in front of more fire services and continuing development in close collaboration with firefighters and first responders.

TotalCare support activities are last but not least.

In Europe, we decided to deliver through qualified and recognized partners new services like PPE cleaning or training solution rentals.

 When we supply turnout gear, we want to ensure access to proper care, inspection and long-term support.

Across training solutions, PPE and TotalCare, the focus for 2026 is clarity and visibility, showing how these elements form a connected approach that supports health, safety and operational needs.

What training solutions is LION developing for the coming year?

There are a couple of strands to what we are working on.

One sits in the digital space.

We are working seriously on virtual and augmented reality-based training solutions.

Development is still ongoing, so it is too early to share specifics, but the intention is to bring something genuinely new to the market rather than small updates to existing tools.

INTERSCHUTZ would be a natural point to continue that conversation and demonstrate where this work is heading.

Alongside that, there is a strong focus on training around the equipment customers already have.

We see a real need for more structured guidance on how to use training equipment, training centres and PPE as effectively as possible.

This includes practical advice on operating smoke generators, getting the best performance from training facilities and using equipment in ways that support consistent, high-quality training outcomes.

How is LION approaching PPE development?

We have redesigned a dedicated PPE range called ENgage®.

It includes three structural firefighting models, the LION® ENgage® Ultra™ Edition,  the LION® ENgage® Select™ and LION® ENgage® Classic™, plus one wildland model.

Together, they cover a range of operational needs within a single PPE family.

In developing ENgage®, we drew heavily on the experience of our US team, particularly their knowledge of NFPA requirements and PPE design.

That input helped inform decisions around fabrics, construction and performance.

We also applied what we have learned about the expectations of European fire services and worked with high-quality suppliers to ensure all components work effectively together through testing and iteration.

One area where we have taken a different approach is availability.

ENgage® is a stock line, so it is available immediately rather than being fully custom-built from the outset.

This shortens lead times and allows fire services to access certified PPE quickly, whether to fill an unexpected gap or to trial equipment before making longer-term decisions.

Producing a stock range also allows efficiencies that support affordability while maintaining quality and certification standards.

How would you explain the scope of LION’s TotalCare offering?

TotalCare is a broad offering, and one of our priorities this year is to explain it more clearly, because it covers several distinct but connected areas.

It exists to support fire and rescue organisations beyond the initial purchase, ensuring equipment remains effective, compliant and usable over time.

At LION EMEA, TotalCare is structured around several elements.

One focuses on PPE lifecycle management, covering inspection, cleaning, repair and replacement.

In Europe, this is delivered through specialist partners using advanced cleaning and repair processes.

The emphasis is on extending the life of PPE while maintaining performance and compliance.

Another element is maintenance and service support for training solutions, from individual smoke generators through to complete training centres.

Like any technical system, these assets require regular servicing and upkeep to remain reliable.

There is also a training component, which is not about teaching people how to become firefighters.

It focuses on helping firefighters, trainers and instructors use PPE, training systems and facilities effectively.

Fire behaviour and training environments vary, and our role is to support the technical side and help customers optimise how they use the equipment they already have.

A further element relates to acquisition and financing models.

In some cases, buying specialist equipment outright does not make sense.

TotalCare includes options such as rental and leasing, allowing access to equipment when needed without long-term ownership, maintenance and storage costs.

This flexibility reflects how training needs and operational risks continue to change.

Last elements of TotalCare is when fire and rescue services plan the creation of a training centre, LION provides consultancy as part of TotalCare to support informed decision-making.

This includes needs assessment, site and layout studies, selection of appropriate training systems, safety and compliance guidance, and long-term operational planning.

The objective is to help organizations develop training facilities that are effective, safe, and sustainable over time.

What role do major events like INTERSCHUTZ play for LION EMEA?

INTERSCHUTZ is about visibility and reconnection.

After such a long gap, it is an opportunity to clearly restate who we are, what we do and how the different parts of our portfolio connect.

It is also about relationships.

The event allows face-to-face conversations with partners and customers that are difficult to replicate online.

This year, our intention is to be very present, both inside and outside the exhibition space.

INTERSCHUTZ gives us the right platform to bring training solutions, PPE and services together in one place and demonstrate how they connect.

Looking ahead, how do you see LION EMEA’s role as risks and expectations change?

At its core, LION’s role is to support first responders.

We contribute by providing the tools, knowledge and support that help fire and rescue services adapt to new ways of working and respond to changing risks.

Our role is to help facilitate change, whether that means supporting research and innovation or making it easier for fire services to adopt new approaches in practice.

We are not doing that alone, but we do see it as our responsibility to contribute and to support that direction.

Ultimately, everything we do is intended to support firefighters in their daily work, reduce unnecessary complexity and help them feel prepared and confident in increasingly demanding environments.

That purpose has been part of the company since it began more than a century ago, and it continues to define our role going forward.

Internal emails show forest service knew PFAS were in firefighters’ pants

What ProPublica reported about forest service gear and PFAS

U.S. Forest Service officials knew for years that pants used by wildland firefighters contained per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), according to internal correspondence obtained by ProPublica.

ProPublica reported that the agency was alerted as early as 2021, ahead of public acknowledgement of the issue.

In February 2024, ProPublica said it asked the Forest Service and the Department of the Interior whether federal wildland firefighting gear contained PFAS.

The organisations provided near-identical replies stating they did not have “specific measured concentration data showing that PFAS is contained in protective clothing and gear.”

ProPublica said the emails show the Forest Service chose to wait for the results of a study into whether PFAS can be absorbed through the skin before sharing information more widely.

Emails show internal questions and supplier responses

ProPublica said the emails were released last week in response to a Freedom of Information Act request filed in 2022 by George Broyles, a former Forest Service employee who studied smoke exposure among firefighters.

Broyles said: “They just obfuscate.

“It’s just a continuation of the same thing: ‘We’re going to stick our heads in the sand and hope that nobody notices.’”

In April 2022, ProPublica said a senior Forest Service official named David Haston asked colleagues whether TenCate’s fabric was “still coming with PFAS in the finish?” and whether there was a duty to notify employees.

ProPublica said earlier emails show a Forest Service equipment specialist asked TenCate in April 2021 whether the Shelltite finish on its Advance fabric had any PFAS presence.

A TenCate manager replied with a document confirming one of its finishes contained a form of PFAS applied to repel hydrocarbons and gasoline, and said the company was developing a finish without the compound.

TenCate did not respond to ProPublica’s requests for comment.

ProPublica said emails from TenCate to the Forest Service described the finish as using a form of PFAS with six or fewer fluorinated carbon atoms.

Studies, health concerns and what remains unclear

ProPublica said the Forest Service decided in 2022 to wait for studies from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), including one on whether PFAS can be absorbed through skin, before making decisions.

A Forest Service physiologist wrote that a labour advocacy group should submit an official request for the information.

ProPublica reported that the Forest Service never told rank-and-file wildland firefighters that their pants might contain PFAS.

Bryan Ormond, an associate professor of textile engineering, chemistry and science at North Carolina State University, said: “From the wildland firefighting perspective, I don’t see any reason to have the PFAS treatments in their gear.

“They don’t really need the oil repellency.

“It would be a safer option to not have the PFAS treatment.”

In January 2023, a senior director at TenCate wrote: “To the best of our knowledge wearing ADVANCE with Shelltite or Supershelltite has not caused deleterious health impacts,” and the company also told the agency it was producing a PFAS-free finish for the pant fabric.

ProPublica said it is unclear whether the government began purchasing pants with the new finish or continued to purchase pants with PFAS.

In 2024, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released a study mandated by Congress in 2021, and ProPublica said it found some wildland firefighting gear contained PFAS.

Heather Stapleton, an exposure scientist and professor at Duke University, said the study showed levels in certain samples “similar to what has been reported in structural firefighting gear.”

ProPublica said NIST did not respond to its questions, and the NIOSH study that Forest Service officials were waiting on remains ongoing.

Firefighters remain exposed to hazardous fire residues despite policy changes, says London Assembly Report

Firefighters continue to face exposure to toxic contaminants

A London Assembly Fire Committee report warns that firefighters in London may be routinely exposed to hazardous substances released during fires.

The report Exposure to fire contaminants in London: A hidden, growing risk? was produced by the London Assembly Fire Committee.

The findings identify asbestos, heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants among contaminants present at incidents.

The Committee notes that definitive UK evidence on cancer causation is still emerging.

Research presented to the Committee shows higher cancer incidence and abnormal tumour markers among firefighters compared with the general population.

Fire Brigade Union commissioned research found that 4% of firefighters surveyed, around 1 in 25, reported a cancer diagnosis in a self-reported sample of more than 11,000 personnel.

Prevalence was highest among those aged 35 to 39, around three times the rate seen in the general population.

Between 10% and 15% of respondents were recorded as having abnormal tumour markers, compared with a control group drawn from the public.

Policy progress and recommendations for national action

The Committee concludes that the London Fire Brigade (LFB) Fire Contaminants Policy has shifted attitudes away from the “badge of honour” of dirty kit.

Implementation varies widely across stations, partly because of limitations in personal protective equipment availability and older station layouts.

The Committee urges the Government and the National Fire Chiefs Council to reduce firefighters’ exposure to fire contaminants.

Recommendations include creating a UK-wide exposure and health monitoring programme for firefighters.

A pilot of operational exposure monitoring in London is also proposed.

Further measures call for stronger training, assurance and compliance with fire contaminants policies, improved PPE supply and procurement planning, and greater emphasis on health promotion within occupational health services.

The Committee also asks the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council to review evidence on cancer risks linked to firefighting.

Chair of the London Assembly Fire Committee Zack Polanski AM said: “Fires don’t end when the flames are out as toxic contaminants can remain long afterward.

“Firefighters accept risk as part of the job, but exposure to toxic chemicals should not be an unavoidable consequence of protecting the public.

“While London Fire Brigade has made real progress, this report shows more needs to be done to understand and reduce the long-term health risks firefighters face.”

The report treats decontamination practices, station design and long-term health monitoring as closely connected areas for further action.

Lifestyle references criticised by the Fire Brigades Union

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has responded to the London Assembly Fire Committee report Exposure to fire contaminants in London: A hidden, growing risk?.

In its statement, the FBU said the report includes a recommendation referring to “positive lifestyle changes, including smoking cessation, physical fitness, diet, sleep hygiene, and alcohol awareness”.

Steve Wright, Fire Brigades Union general secretary, said: “Firefighters are dying younger and living with life-altering cancers and chronic illness.

“These are preventable occupational deaths, and this is a national scandal.

“The UK is decades behind other countries on this issue, and this report underlines the urgent need for basic, long-overdue measures: stronger prevention measures, regular health monitoring for all firefighters, and re-evaluation of compensation for firefighters’ occupational diseases.

“However, firefighters will rightly find the references to ‘lifestyle’ offensive.

“Firefighters are not getting sick because of personal choices – they are getting sick because they are being systematically exposed to toxic substances in the course of their work.

“When so many other countries and international bodies are doing the right thing and recognising the risks firefighters face, it is time for our own government to stop ignoring the evidence and act.”

Anna Stec, Professor of Fire Chemistry and Toxicity at the University of Lancashire, said: “While the report makes positive recommendations on the need for a UK-wide rollout of harmonised contamination exposure tracking and health monitoring for firefighters, the argument that firefighter cancers and diseases could be reduced through lifestyle changes is fallacious.

“Lifestyle factors influence health outcomes in any population, but they do not explain the elevated rates of cancer and disease seen in firefighters.

“Why should firefighters be expected to adopt such changes in order to compensate for the toxic environments they are routinely exposed to at work?”

Report Summary: Exposure to fire contaminants in London: A hidden, growing risk?

Why the investigation was launched

The report states that firefighters are expected to accept risk as part of their work, but that exposure to fire contaminants represents an emerging and less visible risk, particularly in relation to cancer.

Purpose of the Committee’s inquiry

The London Assembly Fire Committee launched its investigation to examine how these risks are manifesting in London, the evidence linking exposure to cancer, and what actions could better protect firefighters locally and nationally.

Nature of exposure in London

Evidence presented to the Committee indicates that firefighters in London are exposed to products of combustion at fire incidents, and that these exposures are broadly similar to those faced elsewhere in the UK.

Cumulative exposure in London

Witnesses told the Committee that, because of the high number of fires attended in London, there may be risks associated with cumulative exposure, even though London is otherwise comparable to other large metropolitan areas.

Evidence and uncertainty on cancer causation

The report notes that definitive UK evidence of direct causal links between firefighting and specific cancers is still developing, given the varied nature of exposures and the time it can take for related illnesses to emerge.

International evidence context

The Committee references the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s 2023 designation of occupational exposure as a firefighter as carcinogenic, while also noting that more UK-specific research is needed.

Why uncertainty should not delay action

The Committee argues that the absence of definitive causal proof should not prevent action, and that better assessment, measurement and tracking of exposure is needed.

Call for a national monitoring programme

The report recommends that central government, working with the National Fire Chiefs Council and devolved administrations, establish a UK-wide firefighter exposure and health monitoring programme with national standards for data collection and long-term surveillance.

Recommendation on compensation evidence review

The Committee recommends that the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council undertake a fresh review of the evidence on cancer risks linked to firefighting, in light of developments since its 2021 position paper.

Progress made by London Fire Brigade

The Committee recognises that London Fire Brigade (LFB) has taken several steps since publishing its Fire Contaminants Policy in 2022, and that this has led to a clear cultural shift away from viewing dirty kit as a “badge of honour”.

Key elements of the policy in practice

The report describes changes such as safe disrobe procedures, the use of designated zones within fire stations to reduce cross-contamination, and the expectation that firefighters should shower within an hour of exposure.

Changes to frontline practice

Witnesses and site visits indicated that firefighters are now more focused on decontamination at incidents and on preventing secondary exposure when returning to stations or fire engines.

Persistent practical barriers

The report identifies ongoing challenges with the availability of personal protective equipment, including shortages reported in 2025, which have affected implementation of the policy in some cases.

Financial and operational pressures

The Committee notes that increased cleaning and replacement of PPE are placing additional pressure on fire and rescue service budgets.

Station design as a structural constraint

The report finds that many older fire stations were not designed with modern contamination control in mind, making it difficult to separate clean and contaminated areas consistently.

Cross-contamination risks in existing stations

The Committee observed that, in some stations, contaminated equipment still has to pass through areas intended to remain clean because of building layout constraints.

Recommendations on future PPE contracts

The report recommends that LFB ensure its next PPE contract is designed to meet current and anticipated demands from fire contaminants policies, including more frequent cleaning, faster turnaround times and sufficient stock levels.

Recommendation on exposure monitoring in London

The Committee calls for LFB to develop a time-limited pilot exposure monitoring programme for operational firefighters, scoped in 2026/27 and launched in 2027/28, developed with academic and occupational health experts.

Existing health screening arrangements

The report records that London firefighters receive routine medicals every three years, including basic cardiorespiratory checks and an asbestos-specific element.

Limits of cancer screening

The Committee notes that comprehensive cancer screening for firefighters is complex, and that some cancers most strongly associated with firefighting, such as mesothelioma and bladder cancer, do not currently have safe, reliable population-level screening tests in routine NHS use.

Prevention and occupational health

The report recommends that LFB strengthen its prevention-focused approach by embedding proactive health promotion, including support around smoking cessation, fitness, diet, sleep and alcohol, within routine occupational health provision.

Regulatory context

The Committee records that the Health and Safety Executive considers the existing regulatory framework, including the Health and Safety at Work Act, COSHH regulations and Workplace Regulations, sufficient to reflect firefighting’s classification as a carcinogenic occupation.

Overall conclusion of the Committee

The Committee concludes that LFB’s Fire Contaminants Policy represents a substantial step forward, but that further national coordination, better exposure data, improved PPE systems and updated fire station design standards are needed to reduce long-term health risks for firefighters.

Firefighters rely on breathing apparatus masks and personal protective equipment that must perform consistently in hostile environments.

During incidents and training, this equipment is exposed to soot, fine particulates and biological contaminants that can remain embedded if cleaning is poorly controlled.

For BA masks and regulators, residue can affect the seal, compromise performance or expose the next wearer to harmful substances.

Amid growing awareness of occupational health risks and cancer exposure, many fire and rescue services have moved away from manual, sink-based cleaning towards automated, repeatable processes in dedicated workshops.

MEIKO UK Managing Director Paul Anderson sat down with IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey to explain how the company’s TopClean washer-disinfector systems work, the problems they are designed to solve and how controlled cleaning processes are reshaping BA mask and PPE hygiene in the fire service.

What risks do fire services face when BA masks and PPE are not cleaned using a controlled and repeatable process?

Over recent years, fire services have placed much greater emphasis on firefighter health.

It is now widely recognised that fires expose equipment to carcinogens that can adhere to clothing and breathing apparatus masks and then be inhaled by the next wearer.

In some cases, the person cleaning the equipment may also be exposed.

Protecting firefighters therefore has to be central to how PPE is managed.

Traditionally, many services relied on a three-sink method, where equipment is dipped sequentially through separate sinks.

That approach leaves significant room for variation, relies heavily on individual practice and typically involves large volumes of chemicals, leading to inconsistent results.

With an automated process, cleaning is built around defined parameters such as time, temperature, mechanical action and chemistry.

When those elements are balanced correctly, the result is a controlled and repeatable method of cleaning every time, reducing water and chemical use while providing a consistent outcome for BA masks and other PPE.

From a technical perspective, what makes BA masks and regulators more challenging to clean than general PPE?

Cleaning PPE is very different from cleaning items like glassware or plates.

PPE goes straight back onto the human body and sits in close contact with the skin, so there has to be confidence that contaminants are fully removed.

With BA masks, cleaning the outside alone is not enough.

The inside of the mask also has to be cleaned thoroughly.

After a fire, particulates drawn into the mask can remain detectable by smell and those residues can carry bacteria and other contaminants that should not be inhaled.

The process therefore has to address both internal and external surfaces using appropriate temperatures and, where required, specific levels of disinfection.

This approach is well established in healthcare settings, where defined contact times during the final rinse are used alongside temperature and chemistry to remove viruses.

The aim is to clean a mask to a standard where it can be safely worn by one firefighter and then issued to another immediately afterwards.

Other items such as helmets, gloves and boots present fewer challenges because they are not part of the breathing system.

Masks are more demanding, and regulators and breathing components must also be protected during cleaning.

This is achieved using controlled air connections that prevent water from entering sensitive areas, allowing a fully automated process that protects the equipment while delivering a high standard of hygiene.

How do washer-disinfectors improve consistency and limit exposure compared with manual cleaning?

The cleaning process is built around what is commonly referred to as Sinner’s circle, which brings together time, temperature, mechanical action and chemistry.

In manual cleaning, those elements are applied inconsistently and are heavily influenced by the individual carrying out the task.

With an automated system, all parameters are controlled.

In a manual sink-based process, half a litre to a litre of detergent per sink is common.

In an automated washer-disinfector, chemical use is typically around seven millilitres per litre of water, and even less during the final rinse.

That level of control directly affects exposure, energy use and resource consumption.

The system uses less chemical, less water and less energy overall, which means less contaminated water entering the drainage system and a more contained process for the operator.

Throughput is also significantly higher.

Up to 40 BA masks can be cleaned per hour, with larger systems such as the TopClean D increasing capacity further, while cleaning performance remains consistent internally and externally and is supported by validated process data.

Why pressurise regulators during cleaning and what practical benefits does it deliver?

The TopClean M is designed to clean both the inside and outside of the BA mask while allowing regulators to be cleaned as part of the same process.

A regulator controls the flow of air from the cylinder to the wearer and certain internal areas cannot be exposed directly to water.

To address this, the system uses a low-pressure compressed air connection during the wash cycle.

This maintains internal air pressure within the regulator, preventing water from entering sensitive components.

The regulator is cleaned externally while its internal parts remain protected, delivering effective cleaning alongside protection of critical breathing components within a single controlled process.

How do clamping and racking features reduce cross-contamination inside larger systems?

The TopClean D is a larger system that many fire services now use as a single solution where space is limited.

It can clean masks, cylinders, backpacks, complete apparatus, gloves, boots and helmets within one controlled cycle.

It operates quickly while using less water and fewer chemicals and can incorporate heat recovery so energy from the process is reused to preheat incoming water.

Cross-contamination is prevented through controlled separation within the machine, with contaminants removed through filtration and discharged safely so items are not re-exposed during the cycle.

How are cycles and detergents set to remove contaminants without damaging seals, visors or valves?

Cleaning programmes are developed within the temperature ranges and parameters approved by mask and equipment manufacturers, supported by the relevant certifications.

Materials such as silicone and rubber need careful handling, as prolonged exposure to excessive heat can lead to gradual degradation and shorten service life.

To avoid that, temperatures, detergents and cycle times are matched to the materials being cleaned and checked in partnership with manufacturers.

This ensures contaminants are removed effectively while the integrity of seals, visors and valves is maintained.

What changes when services adopt automated cleaning and how might hygiene expectations evolve?

Moving from a manual process such as a three-sink system to an automated one is a significant change.

Initial reactions are often positive, as teams no longer need to clean equipment by hand, but structured training remains essential.

Teams are taken through the process from start to finish, supported by clear visual guidance displayed in the workshop.

The operation itself is kept simple, with most machines running on three main cycles: short, medium and long.

Heavily contaminated equipment requires a longer cycle, while routine post-training cleaning can be completed more quickly.

Training covers how to run the machine and how to maintain it, with elements such as colour-coding used to identify parts handled and cleaned daily.

Looking ahead, how do you see expectations around PPE and BA hygiene evolving?

Over the last two to three years, expectations around PPE hygiene have shifted quickly, influenced in part by developments in the United States, where contamination and cancer exposure among firefighters have been more openly discussed.

Cost will always shape decision-making.

Services still have to balance capital investment with ongoing spend on water, power and chemicals.

Systems that reduce resource use while delivering reliable decontamination allow services to improve protection for crews while making realistic choices about where money is spent over the life of the equipment.

In addition to specific fire boots standard, teams must be aware of the latest updates to general safety standards.

In particular, EN ISO 20345:2022, which includes new testing such as slip resistance on ceramic tiles with a soap solution as a basic requirement, ladder grip, puncture resistance and water penetration and absorption resistance.

Firefighter footwear which meets and exceeds these standards is crucial in keeping workers safe and comfortable.
