Balancing safety and comfort

Designing firefighter PPE is complex and highly specialised.

The challenge lies in striking the right balance: creating garments that protect wearers from external heat, flames, and contaminants, while also helping them stay cool and comfortable.

Our design team are proud to work closely with several quality fibre and fabric manufacturers.

This flexibility allows customers to choose from a wide-range of fabric combinations to suit all needs and budgets.

Whilst some FRSs prefer to invest in the premium options, others find that different solutions are equally effective or better suited to their needs.

Ultimately, safety and protection are never compromised.

Every garment undergoes rigorous testing and certification to meet or exceed the relevant industry standards.

Collaborating with customers and trialling kit is key to creating highly protective garments that fit the bill, whether that’s selecting a moisture barrier or determining the placement and size of pockets and loops to suit a crew’s existing equipment.

As a result, our product ranges are constantly evolving in response to feedback from firefighters.

Case study: All Wales Fire & Rescue Services 

In 2019 following a competitive tender, the All Wales Fire and Rescue Services (FRS) procurement group, representing South Wales FRS, Mid and West Wales FRS and North Wales FRS, appointed Ballyclare to provide its Xenon structural PPE for the nation’s 3,000 firefighters.

Tony Jackson, Group Manager on the Operational Appliances & Equipment Team at South Wales FRS, reflects on the rigorous selection process and the successful delivery of this contract, from sizing and roll-out to ongoing care and maintenance:

“Although we have separate budgets and financing, the three fire and rescue services in Wales frequently procure firefighting equipment together, so that we can benefit from shared resources and economies of scale.

“In 2019, we were looking to replace our structural firefighting kit, so published an All Wales tender outlining the industry standards to be met and our agreed specifications.

“In general, there were four key elements we were looking for. The first was breathability.

“We needed the kit to be significantly more lightweight and breathable so that it would be more comfortable to wear on hot days.

“Our existing kit was hot, heavy and cumbersome.

“Our next requirement was durability.

“We wanted kit that was tough, long-lasting and resistant to wear and tear, particularly in susceptible areas such as the elbows, knees and shoulders.

“We find shoulders are a typical point of abrasion due to the fit of our self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and also when operating firefighting jets or hose reels.

“Another important consideration was visibility.

“A high vis element was needed to help   keep our crews seen and safe.

“Finally, we were keen to offer a wide range of sizes to ensure all our firefighters had comfortable kit that fitted them properly.

“As part of the tender process, we undertook wearer trials with a team of volunteers from all three FRSs.

“The volunteers wore sample kits for a series of typical firefighting activities including hose running, crawling, wearing SCBA sets and climbing ladders.

“We then used a scoring matrix to gather feedback on specific points such as comfort, flexibility and suitability for the task.

“Wearer feedback is crucial to our tender processes.

“We want our firefighters to feel supported and involved in the decision making process, particularly for kit they will be wearing almost every day.

“Based on the tender submission and the trials, Ballyclare kit came out as the clear front-runner.

“The final decision was based on a combination of performance, comfort, cost and customer service.

“The Xenon structural kit meets all our requirements. It’s lightweight and comfortable to wear, it’s our firefighters’ ‘go to’ kit.

“Even on warmer days working on incidents not involving fire, they tend to wear it rather than our current technical rescue kit.

“It has reinforced elbows, knees and shoulder panels designed to resist wear and tear, and has highly effective high vis reflective and photoluminescent tape for visibility.

“It’s almost eerie on a dark night to see the fighters glowing as they move around the fire ground!

“Ballyclare provided us with a wide range of sizes for both male and female firefighters and came to the stations to undertake a sizing programme to ensure everyone got the right fit.

“At SWFRS, we decided to purchase two sets of personal issue kit for each firefighter, whereas colleagues at MAWWFRS and NWFRS opted for a pool system for their kit.

“Roll-out was tricky as the country was hit with the first wave of COVID.

“We agreed to pause for six months to let the situation settle before delivery got underway.

“Ballyclare handled the entire process efficiently and without incident despite the challenging circumstances.

“All crews switched to the new kit on the same day, which worked well and presented us as a unified team.

“We also opted for Ballyclare’s ongoing care and maintenance service, which is fulfilled by a professional laundry company and works well.

“We have weekly collections of used kit, which is cleaned, dried, inspected, repaired if necessary, and returned within seven days.

“Over the years, our experience with Ballyclare has been very good and we have an excellent working relationship with our account manager, Lee Porter.

“We continue to work closely together to fine tune our processes and procedures.

“Above all, our firefighters are really pleased with the kit.

“They find it comfortable and easy to work in, and they trust it to keep them safe.”

Twiceme and SCHUBERTH add digital safety to firefighting helmet range

Twiceme enters firefighting market with SCHUBERTH

Twiceme Technology has partnered with SCHUBERTH to integrate digital safety data into professional firefighting helmet designs launched in Germany on Tuesday 18 November 2025.

The company said the collaboration marks its move into the firefighting market from its existing focus on digital safety for jobsites and outdoor activities.

According to Twiceme Technology, the integrated system allows users to record equipment health, inspection dates and compliance information directly within the helmet.

The data structure is intended to support tracking of certifications and expiration dates so that helmet condition and documentation remain current.

Twiceme Technology stated that this approach aims to support safety standards, reduce the risk of incidents linked to equipment issues and cut costs by streamlining safety management.

Christian Connolly, Chief Executive Officer of Twiceme Technology, said: “This is a historic step for Twiceme and for the firefighting community.

“We turn to firefighters when we need help the most, yet we rarely think about how dangerous their profession is.

“For the first time, they will have access to integrated digital safety information directly in their helmets, empowering action when seconds matter.”

Digital data built into firefighting helmet range

According to SCHUBERTH, the new F300, F220 and F130 models are the first professional firefighter helmets to include integrated digital safety information technology.

Each helmet is described as a high-performance model for use under extreme thermal stress in structural firefighting, rescue operations and traffic-accident response.

The manufacturer said the shells incorporate HighTemp-Fibre materials designed to resist high temperatures while maintaining impact protection.

All three models are certified to Deutsches Institut für Normung and European Committee for Standardization EN 443: 2008 structural firefighter helmet standards.

SCHUBERTH noted that all three helmets are Type A, with the F220 using a modern three-quarter shell, the F130 retaining a traditional half-shell and the F300 tailored to tasks requiring work overhead or extended upward vision.

Helmet design based on SCHUBERTH experience

SCHUBERTH said its firefighting helmet range draws on its long history of developing protective headgear for professional users in Germany.

The company described the HighTemp-Fibre shells as delivering protection against heat and impact while allowing for comfort and modularity.

Florian Brunck, Head of Business Unit industrial safety and firefighting at SCHUBERTH, said: “Our high-performance firefighter helmets were developed specifically to withstand increased thermal stress and meet the highest standards of safety and performance.

“We’ve always worked to set the benchmark in head protection, and now with Twiceme, we’ve introduced a bridge that connects the firefighter, the equipment, and the responder.”

Availability in Germany and industrial helmet rollout

According to SCHUBERTH, the firefighting helmets featuring Twiceme Technology are now available via authorised SCHUBERTH distributors and firefighting equipment partners in Germany.

The company added that Twiceme Technology has also been integrated into its CROSSGUARD and BOP industrial safety helmets.

These industrial models include functions for logging helmet inspections and keeping records of training certifications for workers.

Operational impact of digital helmet data

Fire and rescue chiefs and senior officers may use this development to assess how digital records embedded in helmets could support fleet-wide oversight of structural firefighting PPE across German crews.

Procurement officers and equipment specifiers may examine whether integrated tracking of inspections, certifications and expiration dates within each helmet can simplify compliance checks and budget planning for helmet replacement cycles.

Standards and certification bodies can reference the DIN and EN 443: 2008 compliance of the F300, F220 and F130 models when reviewing how digital data layers sit alongside established structural firefighter helmet requirements.

Training officers and instructors, particularly in organisations that also deploy CROSSGUARD and BOP industrial helmets, could apply Twiceme-based records to verify that personnel training certifications align with helmet status before operational deployment.

Industrial facility managers responsible for high-risk environments may review the industrial implementations of Twiceme Technology as examples of how helmet-based data can be used to document inspections and workforce training in day-to-day operations.

What fire investigation professionals gain from Fire-Dex’s new ensemble

Fire-Dex launches fire investigation PPE

Fire-Dex announced the launch of a new Fire Investigation PPE designed specifically for fire investigators, according to the company.

The manufacturer said the ensemble aims to bridge the gap between full structural turnouts and single-layer alternatives at post-fire scenes.

Fire-Dex stated that the design focuses on balancing protection, mobility and breathability for long-duration investigations.

Design driven by investigator feedback

According to the company, the garment was developed with input from experienced fire investigators to address real-world requirements.

Fire-Dex noted that users requested targeted waterproofing without sacrificing breathability, solutions to help manage heat during summer conditions and features that accommodate investigation tools.

The company said the ensemble is built to move with investigators, protect priority areas and reduce heat stress during extended operations.

Key features and material selection

Fire-Dex highlighted smart waterproofing that covers specific areas for targeted protection while maintaining breathability elsewhere.

The ensemble includes integrated knee pads intended for prolonged kneeling and climbing, the company said.

Strategic venting panels based on patent-pending technology used in Fire-Dex’s AeroFlex turnouts are designed to enhance breathability while blocking particulates.

Pass-through pockets are included for access to firearms, identification or other tools required for fire investigation work.

A specialised waterproof phone pocket provides protected access, the manufacturer added.

The garment uses TECGEN51 fabric, which Fire-Dex described as a lightweight, durable and breathable alternative PPE material used by first responders for nearly two decades.

Availability and ensemble compatibility details

Fire-Dex positioned the Fire Investigation PPE within its non-structural PPE ecosystem.

The company said investigators can pair the garment with Dex-Rescue Gloves, FDXL90 Boots and particulate-blocking hoods to create an integrated, lightweight set.

According to Fire-Dex, the Fire Investigation PPE is now available by requesting a quote to connect with a distributor.

Relevance for fire and safety professionals

Procurement officers and equipment specifiers can evaluate a purpose-built investigation ensemble that targets hazards common to post-fire scenes, including sharp debris, wet materials and contaminants, using targeted waterproofing and particulate-blocking venting panels.

Training officers and instructors may factor integrated knee protection, pass-through pockets and a waterproof phone pocket into practical task design for prolonged kneeling, climbing and documentation on scene.

Fire investigators and risk assessors can consider TECGEN51 fabric for lightweight, durable and breathable protection during extended operations, and assess compatibility with Dex-Rescue Gloves, FDXL90 Boots and particulate-blocking hoods when assembling a non-structural PPE set.

Facility managers responsible for investigation access control can plan for reduced heat burden and mobility-oriented features when scheduling prolonged scene work in warm conditions.

PGI launches BarriAire hoods certified to NFPA 1970 firefighter standard

The safety upgrade firefighters have been waiting for: BarriAire hoods

PGI has released its BarriAire Carbon Shield Elite Pro and Elite Pro Short firefighting hoods, which are now UL Certified to comply with the new National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1970 particulate-blocking standard.

The company said the certification follows the transition of the standard from a strong recommendation to a mandatory requirement.

The hoods provide 99.9% particulate efficiency and are made with the industry’s most flame-resistant fibre, according to PGI.

They are designed to protect against heat, toxic particulates and carcinogens encountered during firefighting operations.

Product design prioritises comfort and safety

PGI explained that the BarriAire hoods offer improved comfort and breathability while maintaining high levels of thermal and particulate protection.

The company said the Elite Pro and Elite Pro Short versions are softer, more breathable and made without intentionally added per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The removal of PFAS aligns with growing industry focus on reducing exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals in firefighting gear.

Setting new standards in firefighter protection

According to PGI, the BarriAire Carbon Shield hoods represent a new benchmark in firefighter safety equipment.

The company said the hoods are designed to deliver advanced protection without compromising wearability or long-term comfort.

PGI added that the launch marks a new chapter in firefighter PPE compliance under NFPA 1970.

Relevance for fire and safety professionals

The introduction of NFPA 1970-certified particulate-blocking hoods marks an important development for fire and rescue procurement teams, equipment specifiers and safety officers responsible for compliance with updated protective equipment standards.

Fire departments and training organisations will need to ensure firefighter PPE meets the mandatory requirements set by the new NFPA 1970 standard.

Manufacturers and distributors of protective hoods may also need to align product offerings with UL Certification and PFAS-free material standards to maintain regulatory compliance and occupational health objectives.

Firefighter PPE needs to always be fit for purpose and ready for use so having the option to clean it on site after an incident means it’s quickly available for the next callout.  

Hand washing is neither effective nor efficient and puts those undertaking it at further risk of exposure to harmful contaminants.

Using our products and automating the cleaning process saves precious time. It reduces exposure to contaminants and usually the kit room smells much better too!  

Having the ability to clean PPE at the station reduces the number of times PPE needs to be sent away for professional managed servicing, which saves time and money and reduces the need for multiple sets of personal issue PPE. 

What is Rescue Intellitech’s long-term vision for product development?

PGI Safety discuss protective gear with a purpose 

PGI Safety Managing Director Andy Slater outlines changing protection needs, international expansion, particulate research and the impact of firefighter-driven feedback  

Firefighters face daily exposure to harmful particulates, with long-term health consequences now better understood and harder to ignore.

Protective equipment has had to adapt, with greater attention placed on how garments balance safety, comfort and durability. 

PGI Safety, a technical garment manufacturer with roots dating back to the 1940s, has positioned itself at the centre of this shift.

The company combines certified protective clothing with education initiatives, giving fire and rescue services the evidence and practical knowledge they need to make informed choices. 

Leading the effort is Andy Slater, Managing Director across the UK, Europe and Asia Pacific.

With two decades’ experience in safety equipment – and a personal motivation through his firefighter son – he is guiding PGI’s expansion and focus on solutions that respond directly to frontline concerns.

IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey sat down with Andy to discuss the changing demands in firefighter protection and what’s next. 

When meeting firefighters or procurement teams, what key concerns do they raise about required on-the-job protection? 

The key concern now is that protection is essential. If you go back a few years, there wasn’t so much scepticism as a need for proof and more detailed studies.

That evidence is now available – through the work of organisations like the FBU, Hertfordshire University and from statistics alone. 

The challenge for firefighters and procurement teams is navigating the pitfalls. Sadly, as has been publicised, it’s not just about protecting against particulates.

They also need breathability and comfort. It’s about understanding the testing, the standards and what good really looks like. 

For example, some manufacturers claim NFPA certification when they don’t actually have it.

There is no specific EN standard for particulate hoods – NFPA is the only global benchmark and it is very difficult and expensive to achieve. We pride ourselves on meeting both NFPA and EN Certification.

So from the customer’s perspective, the question is: what does good look like and why is your product as good as you claim it is? For us, the answer is proof.

That means hard data, recognised certification, and real-world results from wearer trials.

It’s not just about making claims—it’s about giving customers the tools to understand exactly what performance clothing can and should do, and guiding them through the data so they can make sense of it with confidence. 

With increasing awareness of long-term health risks from exposure, how is PGI addressing this growing challenge? 

When I joined PGI, it was clear there was an education gap. Some authorities understood the research, others knew far less.

We started with a small knowledge-sharing session involving people like Robbie Burns and John Lord and that grew into our particulate and decontamination seminars. 

The first was at Biggin Hill Airport. We combined science, current evidence and practical solutions – not just products, but behavioural changes like showering within the hour and proper handwashing.

We also showed participants how to check standards, labels and certificates. 

The seminars have been good for us and for the wider community. Authorities have even brought projects forward after attending.

The science and data matter, but the personal stories are what really resonate. PGI has invested heavily in particulate protection, with millions spent on R&D.

Our Barrier Gold hood is now our biggest seller worldwide and we continue to improve it. 

What are the main focus areas for your future seminars and how are you planning the next one? 

We always try to introduce new subjects, but our top priority is keeping the message alive – PSA tests, SNOMED codes and raising awareness.

At the same time, we focus on educating people about available solutions. The challenge is convincing authorities to allocate budgets.

We get strong feedback and sometimes projects move forward, but momentum can fade once people return to daily work. That’s why we keep updating the data, which changes quickly.

We also work to keep seminars fresh. Much of the message is the same, because cancer is cancer, but we adapt the focus and stay close to universities, professionals and influential voices like Robbie Burns and John Lord, who connect directly with audiences.

The next seminar is planned for February or March, though dates aren’t finalised.  

How do you ensure industry feedback and experience directly shape the development or updating of products? 

The seminars are interactive, usually around 100 people and we learn as much as we share. Ideas raised there feed back into our R&D, guiding product development.

Simple measures like snoods and base layers can reduce exposure significantly. Cross-contamination is also a big issue – in the past, firefighters took kit home to wash and families were exposed. 

Everything we do is tested against standards and practicality. If it has to be washed a hundred times, it needs to stand up to that.

These discussions help us refine fabrics, products and approaches, ensuring solutions are practical and effective. 

Crews often highlight comfort and mobility – how do you balance these needs with garment performance standards? 

Although we have a facility in the UK, our main production is in the US, so everything we make meets NFPA standards as a minimum. 

Take hoods as an example. They must filter particulates but also remain breathable. Heat stress is the second biggest killer of firefighters.

Early products blocked contaminants but overheated users, like wearing a plastic bag.

Standards now require breathability, moisture management, flame resistance and durability through repeated laundering.

Needs differ. Instructors face high exposure and may accept less breathability for greater protection. For them we developed a laminate version of our Nanoflex based Hoods.

The standard achieves 97–98% efficiency, while the laminate reaches 99.9%. Whilst it is marginally less breathable but ideal for controlled training environments. 

Which areas of innovation are you focused on and how might fire service needs change? 

We are constantly developing, but hoods remain a priority because they are one of the simplest changes an authority can make.

Firefighters already wear them for heat and flame protection, so swapping to a hood with a protective membrane is an easy upgrade.

It is equally comfortable and breathable but now adds particulate protection. 

Some authorities are further ahead than others. Often that comes down to budgets and resources rather than a lack of awareness. For those who adopt them, it is a quick, straightforward improvement.

Firefighter readiness before, during and after with LION

Anne-Lise Artaud, Marketing Manager EMEA, shares perspectives on LION’s regional integration, firefighter readiness strategies and the company’s preparations for INTERSCHUTZ 2026

LION EMEA has recently expanded its role within the global LION organisation by adding EN-certified turnout gear to its portfolio.

This integration means the division can now deliver the full range of LION solutions, combining protective equipment, immersive training and post-incident maintenance into one complete package.

The aim is to provide a structured approach that supports firefighters before, during and after each call.

To explain how this approach is being developed and applied across the region, IFSJ spoke with Anne-Lise Artaud, Marketing Manager EMEA to discuss the company’s philosophy, the challenges faced across EMEA and its priorities ahead of INTERSCHUTZ 2026.

For readers who may not know, what is LION Protects and how does the EMEA division fit within the wider organisation?

The EMEA division based in the Netherlands delivers a complete package of solutions – from immersive training to gear maintenance and cleaning – ensuring safety and readiness for first responders across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

What was the reason for bringing the EMEA business into the global LION portfolio?

Until recently, the EMEA business offered only part of the complete LION portfolio:  Training Solutions, CBRN and Maintenance and Services.

Integrating EMEA into the global organisation was a strategic move to align our regional capabilities with the comprehensive solutions available in the U.S.

This shift allows us to deliver the full range of offerings – from immersive fire training to service and maintenance and, now, proudly, EN-certified PPE.

Adding this final piece enables us to strengthen our value proposition and truly serve our customers with end-to-end readiness solutions.

Why MSA Safety’s GALLET fire helmets remain iconic after 40 years

MSA Safety marks 40 years of GALLET fire helmets in France

MSA Safety is highlighting four decades of helmet innovation at the 131st National Congress of French Firefighters in Le Mans, France.

The company is showcasing its GALLET F1XF fire helmet and Connected Firefighter Platform at this year’s event.

According to MSA Safety, 2025 marks 40 years since the GALLET F1 was first developed in collaboration with the Paris Fire Brigade.

The company said the original design introduced the first “jet-style” helmet after a firefighter sustained a facial injury during an intervention, prompting a new approach to safety and functionality.

Advancing fire helmet design

The F1XF is the latest generation in the GALLET line and builds on the original model’s patented visor system, which adjusts to the face to reduce the risk of projectiles.

MSA Safety explained that the visor and gold or clear face shield protect against radiant heat, electrical risks, arc flashes and high-speed particles through UV filtering and polycarbonate design.

The company added that the GALLET F1 series has remained central to firefighter protection through decades of continuous design evolution.

Introducing the GALLET F2XR rescue helmet

MSA Safety is also presenting its GALLET F2XR rescue helmet, designed for multi-purpose use across diverse emergency scenarios.

The helmet is certified for water operations and includes accessories such as an integrated ocular visor and modular ear protection covers.

It is approved for use on motorised boats and recognised for wildland firefighting, technical rescue, urban search and rescue, and climbing.

According to MSA Safety, these features make it a versatile option that supports firefighter safety across various mission types.

Expanding connected firefighter capabilities

The company’s Connected Firefighter Platform will also feature at the congress, offering attendees a look at its latest updates.

MSA Safety described the platform as an ecosystem of internet-connected technologies that help fire and rescue services manage personal protective equipment (PPE) and related maintenance data.

It includes the M1 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), the MSA HUB for wireless and cloud-connected monitoring, and the FireGrid cloud platform for incident and asset management.

MSA Safety said the M1 SCBA was recently ranked as the number one manufacturer of choice by the Union of Public Purchasing Groups (UGAP), France’s public procurement body for responsible and measurable purchasing.

The company will be located at booth ROT-F14 during the congress.

KASK has announced the updated Quantum helmet series, designed for wildland firefighting and rescue operations, and now certified for water rescue use when equipped with protection panels.

The Quantum series was first introduced as KASK’s debut helmet range developed specifically for wildland firefighting, technical and mountain rescue.

The company said the latest version extends protection capabilities to water rescue scenarios by meeting the EN 1385 standard for canoeing and white-water sports when the Quantum protection panels are mounted.

Developed to meet four key European standards

According to KASK, Quantum helmets are tested to four European safety standards covering wildland firefighting (EN 16471), technical rescue (EN 16473), mountaineering (EN 12492) and, with the new panels fitted, water rescue (EN 1385).

The company explained that the series was created to meet the demands of modern emergency response operations, combining impact resistance, durability and stability with improved comfort and usability.

Focus on material performance and comfort

KASK said the Quantum helmet features a polycarbonate external shell that resists heat, flame and chemical exposure, combined with a high-density expanded polystyrene (EPS) internal shell and a thermoformed cover for enhanced strength and easy cleaning.

The helmet includes an Adaptive Fit system with ergonomic side wings and a self-adjusting hinge that maintains stability while allowing movement.

It is available in two configurations – a closed shell or a Cabrio version with 14 vents and anti-intrusion metal mesh covers for airflow and debris protection.

Integration with multiple protection accessories

As part of its modular design, the Quantum series includes integrated slots for mounting KASK eye, face, hearing and weather protection systems, as well as the new protection panels.

A front attachment point also allows for easy installation of accessories such as badge holders and headlamps.

The company added that all KASK helmets have been tested for rotational impact performance since 2019 under the KASK rotational impact WG11 test.

Award-winning design recognition

The Quantum series received the iF Design Award 2023 for Design Excellence from the iF International Forum Design.

KASK said the award reflected its goal to combine user-centred safety with advanced technical design under its guiding principle, “Performance is a beautiful thing.”
