IFSJ Exclusive: Adjusting the Approach to fire training with LION

Martin Joosen, Managing Director of LION speaks about creating an effective fire training proposal for the business sector

Did you know that you only have 3 minutes to decide what to do when a fire breaks? Are you ready to react? Do you know what to do? Where do you start? Do you first call the fire department or grab the extinguisher right away?

Martin Joosen, Managing Director of LION, says it is only adequate fire training will warrant a safe outcome to these fire emergency situations. Martin joined LION in 2018 as managing director and is responsible for Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Pacific. He has more than 20 years of experience in International Business, 17 of which are in the Fire Rescue Market.

We sat down with Martin to talk through the company’s new market approach for business and industry sectors in EMEA, focusing on healthcare, the first sector where LION is implementing this new approach.

What kind of emergency scenarios require fire safety training?

Imagine: An electrical shortcut in a patient room, a fire in the kitchen, or a leaking oxygen hose within a medical centre. Those possible fire scenarios can easily create damages, reaching millions of euros and potentially mean human loss.

Fire safety training is not only a legal requirement but also saves lives and protects businesses. Setting up the right training environment is vital.

What does LION propose with product market combination?

All-in-one package to train staff directly on their work location. No team’s transfer to other buildings or premises with LION digital technology. Essential training can now be given where they work using the right combination of products. We have created four training packages to ensure that anyone on the scene knows how to react during the crucial first minutes, deal with fires if appropriate, and escape safely in the event of a fire. Those packages are based on different scenarios that could occur in the healthcare industry.

 Why did you created these packages?

Protecting life, property protection, and operation continuity are the most common fire safety objectives. Being able to recognise fire hazards can help prevent fires from happening. The number of fires in the healthcare sector is increasing yearly worldwide due to the growing number of mobile devices constantly charging. Due to the lack of regular training and healthcare personnel being overly busy, people’s behaviour can’t be predicted easily, and panic will take over.

All patients can’t be evacuated that easily. The best to do then is to contain the fire until the fire department arrives.

For which training scenario are these product combinations packages applicable?

Various procedures can be trained, such as handling fire extinguishers, tactical training for first intervention teams, incidents involving hazardous materials, and evacuation exercises.

The healthcare sector is a critical part of the economy, and emergency training is essential to ensuring that hospitals can function effectively at all times. However, the needs of healthcare facilities can vary significantly, and it can be challenging to create a training proposal that meets all the different requirements.

There are several ways to create a highly effective training proposal. One approach is to create a proposal tailored to the sector’s specific needs. Another method is to create a proposal tailored to the particular needs of businesses within the industry. The best approach will depend on the sector’s specific needs and the companies it targets. However, both techniques can be highly effective in meeting the needs of the business and industry sectors.

Our mission is to use ground-breaking technology, to improve fire emergency situations training and understanding. For a few months, we collaborated and worked on feedback and requirements from fire safety professionals within healthcare structures. How have you developed your training solutions over the years?

LION’s Training Products are reliable, high-quality, and practical. We develop training tools to prepare any intervention team for emergencies.

We have worked closely with fire rescue services for more than 20 years and we can propose a training solution for almost all types of training. However, addressing the business and industry sector implied that we needed to adjust our approach and portfolio proposal. The requirements, thinking process and situation to consider can be very different, and each sector should have a training product proposal that matches their expectations.

When looking at those markets, we saw that our proposed products are compatible. Still, we should propose them in combination, answering a precise training scenario instead of loose from context.

How do you decide which training products to combine?

To create fire training product market combinations, we looked at several steps. The first step is to define the training objectives that our customers want to reach and their target audience. What is the goal of their training? Who will be attending their training? What is their budget? Once we had defined the training objectives and target audience, it was time to create a detailed training outline. This outline should include the topics that will be covered, the activities that will be conducted, and the training products that should be used.

We put together four product market combinations from the most standard (fire extinguisher training) to the more complex and sophisticated (complete fire training program). Each package answers a particular set of training requirements and provides the trainer with the opportunity to create the corresponding scenario. We privileged an escalating approach. As every healthcare facility can have its own unique guidelines, the trainer needs to be able to adapt as much as possible. So nothing is final; those are only suggestions based on facts and sales data.

With digital and evacuations fire simulators, smoke generators, and rescue manikins training products, we propose a solution for healthcare teams to perform versatile, realistic evacuation exercises and procedures within any space or room directly on the spot. No need to move rooms or locations. The practical training will have the most minor impact on the personal schedule.

What are the biggest challenges you see around training staff?

“Train them right here – right now, during their shift.” This is the motto we kept in mind when putting together our product-market combinations. One of the biggest obstacles our customers are facing and that we needed to help them with was to propose training scenarios within their own environment and a cost-efficient and time-saving solution. The goal is to train the people faster and often enough that fire safety becomes a reflex. The course can be planned efficiently: the employees are trained in their working environment while care can continue.

Training within your own work environment is crucial. This is even more true within the healthcare industry. So within our product combination, we propose our digital fire training extinguisher system, the BullsEye™. With it, it is possible to train in practice real-life situations based on the specific circumstances and tasks that apply in a hospital. It combines digital flames, sound, and smoke to create various fire scenarios.

With the extension of the R.A.C.E station, laser extinguishers, misty blind mask, rescue and fire manikins, our customers can combine all the products suggested and make the training complete and very challenging. The training products meet all the technical requirements in hospitals, so they can train safely in places that are not usually possible. Even in an operating room or a laboratory, the quality of our LION Training Products ensures that it is safe to use in the most sensitive conditions.

What is the best way to ensure fire safety training is effective?

We also concluded while conducting our market research that product combination suggestions make it easier for the trainer to set a training environment that teaches the facility’s safety standards to prevent fires and to learn how to best respond to this type of emergency. Immersing the trainees within a good training scenario starts with choosing the right product combinations.

Do you evacuate, or do you apply a stay-put policy? Quick and effective decisions and actions must be taken when a fire starts. Is it clear where the fire extinguisher is located in your department? Do you know the escape plan, and do you know where the closest emergency exit is? Do your staff know how to react in case of fire?

This new approach lets us see more opportunities than ever. Product combinations can be endless; with a portfolio of 80 products and most of those products able to communicate with each other, LION sees a bright future for those tailored training product scenario suggestions.

The key is understanding the sector, the customer and what they want to achieve. Only then can we put together the proper product-market combination.

IFSJ Exclusive: The true colour of fire with Insight Training LLC

Andy Starnes, Instructor at Insight Training LLC, explains why with thermal imaging camera colour palettes, what you see is not always what you get

Thermal Imaging Cameras offer a variety of application-based colour palettes for the end user to choose from. Certain manufacturers offer as many as 23 different choices of colour palettes. In addition to the variety of colour palettes available, certain manufacturers offer feature specific benefits such as hot spot/cold spot tracker, electronic thermal throttle and more.

With such a variety of choices, options, and applications; it is no wonder firefighters are often seen using these application-based colour palettes incorrectly. How can these colour palettes be used incorrectly?

To properly address this issue, we must first define these various application-based colour palettes and their appropriate and intended environment for use. Each specific colour palette is assigned what is known as false colours by the programming in the thermal imaging camera based on different intensities of radiation at different levels.

Most of these colour palettes have uses that were not originally intended for firefighting – they were intended for low temperature and low contrast environments except fire-based colour palettes such as TI Basic. This is especially important to note as the fireground will have much higher temperatures than most of these colour palettes listed here were intended for.

Fire departments who are choosing thermal imaging cameras would be wise to do their research before purchasing any device that offers many options that may not be applicable to their service delivery model. In other words, if a department chooses a highly complicated device with numerous application specific options, they must invest in thermography-based training for their firefighters to maximise the effectiveness of their investment.

Establishing common ground

Firefighters are quick to recognise the colour palette known as TI Basic. NFPA 1801, The Standard on Thermal Imagers for the Fire Service-chapter 6.6.4.1.9 states regarding colourisation the following:

In the TI Basic mode, the heat colour reference bar shall have a colour scale that includes only the following colourisation: Greyscale — at the bottom of the heat colour reference bar before colour indication begins and shall not be more than 50 percent of the overall height of the heat colour reference bar; yellow at the low end of the heat colour reference bar; orange in the middle of the heat colour reference bar; and red at the high end of the heat colour reference bar.

This colour palette is simple and intuitive for all users to understand except for the following variable: Manufacturers choose when these colours engage, and they are approved by NFPA if they follow the approved colour/temperature progression with no more than 50% of the colour palette being in grey scale.

This creates a problem for firefighters as they can pick up any of the currently certified NFPA 1801 Certified Thermal Imaging Cameras and each will show colourisation at different temperatures at differing pixel percentages and some show colourisation in high and low sensitivity modes.

The issue of non-uniformity in colour temperature correlation continues to worsen when we notice that many manufacturers offer an overwhelming selection of non-firefighting application-based colour palettes such as: Rainbow or High Colour, Iron Bow, Fire & Ice, Black Hot, Green Hot and many more.

One of the best explanations for how and why colour palettes are developed comes from Teledyne FLIR: “In thermal imaging, each individual pixel represents a specific temperature data point. These data points are assigned a unique colour or shade based on their value, meaning that as the thermal sensor detects changes in heat energy, it will express this change by adjusting the colour or shade of a pixel. These pre-set gradients—or thermal palettes—determine pixel appearance and help identify different heat sources throughout a scene.”

By assigning specific temperature data points to a specific colour or shade this allows firefighters to quickly identify areas of interest. But which colour palettes should and should not be used in the realm of firefighting?  Per NFPA 1801, TI Basic is the recommended colour palette for firefighting but there are numerous other colour palettes available for use. The issue is not the colour palettes themselves but the end user and their level of overall knowledge.

Colour palette options

First, the end user must be trained on the specific application-based colour palette. While the temperature and conditions of a scene is the same, each colour palette will detect and interpret the scene differently. By understanding the colour palette and its intended use, a firefighter can use these colour palettes to their advantage in various emergency situations.

According to Dave Lee from FLIR Delta: “Not all colour palettes are well suited for every situation. In fact, some colour palettes can even make your job harder or even hide what you are looking for.”

Iron-Bow: The Iron-bow colour palette is one of the most popular palettes chosen by thermography professionals. It is used extensively in the inspection industry when viewing roofs, solar panels, and electrical equipment. It is also used in pinpointing skin temperature variations in industrial thermal imaging cameras known as EBT or elevated body temperature devices. Many TIC manufacturers do not publish the temperature colour correlations for this palette.

Rainbow Colour Palette: In thermography, the rainbow colour palette is typically used for demonstration purposes to show clients/customers areas of potential interest as the broad spectrum of colours provide a separation of specific areas of interest. It is also used in the electrical industry when inspecting circuit boards and electronic components. In emergency services, this colour palette can lead to confusion for firefighters due to the manufacturer does not publish the colour/temperature correlations.

White Hot: Prior to the addition of TI Basic Plus, the standard colour palette was White Hot. With this, the hottest object within the field of view of the will appear white whereas the coldest object within the field of view will be colorised black. The issue arises when we are trying to determine the areas that are in-between black and white.

Firefighters who use this colour palette would be wise to consider any area that is white (in fire conditions) as hot and cool the area until it becomes black. Shades of grey are not as easy to differentiate as thermographers tell us. When compared to the other options the firefighter must choose from within the various colour palettes; White Hot is the simplest option for staying oriented.

Colour selection criteria guide

In situations such as the fire ground, a firefighter does not have the luxury of time to select from various colour palettes. The end user must ask themselves the following questions: Do I have seconds? Such as a fire or rescue scene? -or- Do I have minutes? Such as a lost person search operation or drone application as pictured here.

When seconds count, newer standard fire service TICs will turn on and default to TI Basic without selecting or pressing any additional buttons other than the power button. If a firefighter is in another application mode other than TI-Basic, they can simply tap the green power button and it will return to TI-Basic. When the end user has more time such as during investigations, size up, or overhaul situations, they can quickly select their colour palette of choice.

The following colour selection criteria guide is designed for applications where time is not of the essence The end user should consider the following questions:

• What am I looking for? High Heat? Low Heat? No Heat?

• What is the background temperature compared to the object of interest?

• What type of Incident? Fire, Lost Person, Haz-Mat, Active Shooter?

• Do I need detail, or Do I need simply to identify the area of interest?

• Who is the operator? Are they colour blind or have issues with their eyesight?

This three-point model can simplify the process.

1) Check Conditions: What are the overall background temperatures compared to the object of interest? Toggle through the available colour palettes while keeping in mind that as the environment changes so will the discernible details. Is this a high heat or low heat situation? Be aware that as the overall temperature increases, the TIC will switch from high to low sensitivity which can cause a loss of detail. If the end user is viewing a high heat scene, they would be wise to stay in an application mode that offers dual gain or high and low sensitivity. If they are viewing a low temperature scene, a single gain application mode will benefit them greatly.

2) Colourisation Adjustment: Certain colour palettes have adjustable temperature/heat spans to highlight areas of interest.

3) Contrast Check: Certain Colour Palettes offer too little contrast for contexts where clarity and detail are of the utmost importance.

In summary, thermal imaging cameras offer a variety of options and features but they cannot be used to their maximum potential without proper education and training. We recommend learning and training on your specific model of thermal imaging camera. Colour palettes and application features vary by manufacturer. This diagnostic tool can be an asset or a detriment. The determining factor of its overall effectiveness is ultimately up to the knowledge, skill, and understanding of the end user.

Aico sees record breaking year for Expert Installer training

Aico has reported a record-breaking 10,000 installers complete their FIA-CPD accredited Expert Installer training throughout 2022.

Expert Installer training is delivered across the UK by Aico’s team of Regional Specification Managers. The one-hour core module of the award-winning Expert Installer training covers the key information required to correctly install domestic fire and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and environmental sensors with details about standards and legislation.

Training sessions are available throughout the UK, delivered in popular locations and onboard Aico’s mobile training and demonstration units to offer accessibility and flexibility for customers.

The course is suitable for many areas of the company’s supply chain, including electricians, fire and rescue services and social housing providers, as well as apprentices.

Upon completion of the training, Aico’s Expert Installers are encouraged to become a member of the Aico Installer Community Online – a connected platform built to support Expert Installers with carefully designed educational challenges to inspire members to expand their knowledge of home life safety devices.

Hochiki Europe launches new training facility

Life safety manufacturer Hochiki Europe has opened its all-new training facility as well as launched brand new online courses to allow customers from all over to upskill for life.

The new classroom is located at Hochiki Europe’s head office in Gillingham, and is set to be a key asset in the organisation’s vision to provide world class training in the life safety industry.

The new training centre will cater for businesses and system partners who want to ensure their employees stay at the forefront of fire safety. The new educational facility will allow companies to send individuals or whole teams to attend life safety courses.

A range of application-led educational content can now be delivered via both online modules and practical face-to-face sessions, either at customer premises or at the brand new classroom. The resources and course content have been compiled by Hochiki’s team of highly experienced training facilitators, who also deliver the face-to-face courses. 

Remote product and systems training is also possible via the new training centre’s large interactive screen which includes an integrated web cam, allowing customers further afield to benefit from the Hochiki team’s expertise.

Within the classroom, engineers will be able to learn at individual workstations which feature working versions of Hochiki’s life safety system, Latitude, along with two loops of devices.

Safety training in native language improves understanding says UL

When it comes to safety training comprehension increases when learners can give their complete attention without needing to translate information into their first language, according to UL Solutions.

UL Solutions offers courses in multiple languages through its environmental, health and safety library.

UL said that in terms of safety training, it is particularly important that learners can give their complete attention to the content without the needs to mentally translate the information into their first language: “From the beginning of the course, the learner can focus on the subject matter, not on trying to translate and interpret the material. This can be especially helpful in improving comprehension of essential safety training.

“Misinterpretation can lead to lower productivity, lost revenue, injury and loss of life. This can be especially true in high-risk sectors, such as manufacturing, oil and gas exploration, and construction. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that language barriers contribute to 25% of job-related accidents. Moreover, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that fatal injury rates were 69% higher for foreign-born Hispanic workers than those born in the United States.”

It added: “People learn, understand and retain information best if it is taught in their native language. UL Solutions understands the needs of diverse workforces and offers safety programs in widely spoken global languages. Training in various languages is essential because OSHA requires all of training content to be provided in a language and vocabulary that employees understand.”

JAHEZIYA and Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy collaborate for fire safety and maritime training

NFPA online training receives top honour for approach to e-learning

Two of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)’s online training programs, NFPA 1700, Guide for Structural Fire Fighting and NFPA 2400, Standard for Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Used for Public Safety Operations, have been awarded top honours in 2022 for their creative educational approach to e-learning.

NFPA received the honours from The Brandon Hall Group, Horizon Interactive, Summit Creative, and the Davey Awards.    

The training offerings, designed and developed with input from industry experts, help support fire service practitioners who must critically think about codes and standards and how to apply the guidance found within these key documents to their everyday work tasks.

Competency Frameworks for Community Risk Management Planning Launched by NFCC

The National Fire Chiefs Council’s (NFCC) Community Risk Programme (CRP) has launched competency frameworks for community risk management planning covering senior leader and risk analysts/implementation levels. 

The frameworks detail the competencies (behaviours, skills, knowledge, experience, and techniques) needed to develop and oversee an effective community risk management plan and provides a template which FRS can use to audit themselves and to identify any gaps in their current workforce capabilities, either at senior leadership level or risk analysis/implementation level.  

The framework has been developed by expert consultants, through consultation with fire and rescue services and can be used in conjunction with other products developed by the NFCC Community Risk Programme.

BESA welcomes government funding for energy efficiency and heat pump training

The Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) has said the £9.2 million in government funding for energy efficiency and heat pump training announced last week is a welcome boost for green skills. 

The new money is designed to support 8,900 training courses across England and was awarded by the department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) following its Home Decarbonisation Skills Training competition. 

The share allocated to BESA’s will allow it to deliver 400 free training places for qualified heating engineers looking to upskill to become MCS accredited heat pump installers and extend its existing network of specialist training providers.  

This will be the next phase of the programme the Association runs in partnership with MCS and heating equipment manufacturer Worcester Bosch that has already provided free training for 1,000 installers. The training will be delivered through the Association’s online training Academy and the new courses will run until the end of March 2023. 

A shortage of skilled workers has been identified as one of the biggest barriers to the government’s goal of achieving a net zero carbon economy by 2050 and a recent study found that the industry would need to train 46,000 workers and invest £150bn in the South East alone to get homes up to the necessary standards of energy efficiency. 

BESA said this next round of funding was a much needed “shot in the arm” for the training needed to grow the low carbon heating industry.

“There is huge and growing demand for this type of specialist skill,” said BESA’s director of training and skills Helen Yeulet. “However, getting access to quality heat pump training continues to be challenging for several reasons. 

“There is a shortage of trainers and only limited facilities equipped to the right level in places installers can easily access while juggling busy day jobs. And while market demand is clearly growing, it is still not at the level where many SMEs feel able to justify taking their valuable installers off the job for training days to upskill on new technology. We need to make the process easier and more cost effective for them.”

NFCC initiates Middle Leadership project for UK fire and rescue services

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) has initiated the NFCC Middle Leadership Programme project for the benefit of UK fire and rescue services.  

Led by Project Executive ACFO Matt Cook, in conjunction with the project team under NFCC’s Leadership Programme, the project aims to provide a standardised approach to developing middle managers, both operational and support, for the fire sector. 

The programme will incorporate blended and social learning approaches to broaden diversity of thought, skills and knowledge, with the aim of developing people-focused and empowering leaders. 

Alongside the national programme, a portal containing online learning modules will support new, existing and aspiring middle managers.

The Middle Leadership Programme will provide a transition from the Supervisory Leadership Development Programme, launched by the NFCC in September 2022, which supports individuals to further their leadership journey to the strategic leadership pathway.  

The programme is aligned to the NFCC Leadership FrameworkCore Learning Pathway and Core Code of Ethics.  

Intended to be inclusive and accessible to all, a consultation to help define the full scope of the project will be available early next year.

The Middle Leadership Programme will complement other leadership products recently delivered by the Leadership Programme for the benefit of the sector, including the Coaching and Mentoring Portal, Talent Management Toolkit and Supervisory Leadership Development Programme.  

Further products in development include Strategic CPD Masterclasses which are virtual sessions hosted by FRS leaders. The Direct Entry Scheme will also complement the programme which is expected to be delivered in 2023.  

It is anticipated the project will go live in early 2024.
