Pierce Manufacturing launches High Flow Phase I

Phase I of the new High Flow production line has launched at Pierce Manufacturing’s Appleton, Wisconsin manufacturing campus, changing the custom chassis assembly process as part of a wider manufacturing update.

Pierce Manufacturing, an Oshkosh Corporation business, announced the launch as part of its multi-year modernisation programme and ongoing $150 million investment across manufacturing facilities in Wisconsin, Florida and Tennessee.

The company said the High Flow Line introduces a redesigned manufacturing model centred on balanced workloads, enhanced quality controls within the production line and integrated technology.

Pierce said Phase I is already delivering measurable improvements across the custom chassis production process.

The company linked the line to plans to expand production capacity and improve quality, with the aim of reducing fire apparatus lead times.

According to Marty Bass, president of Pierce Manufacturing: “These investments reflect our continued focus on transforming how custom fire apparatus are built to meet the needs of modern firefighting.

“By integrating High Flow production principles with advanced technology and expanded facilities, we’re creating safer, more efficient work environments for our team members while accelerating lead time reductions for our customers.

“We’ve already reduced lead times by more than three months from their peak, and we expect this next phase will build on that momentum.”

Pierce Manufacturing outlines further production changes

Pierce said later phases of the High Flow Line will change the remaining final assembly operations in the second half of 2026.

The company said improved workflow design and closer alignment of labour and resources are supporting faster backlog reduction while maintaining customisation, craftsmanship and performance standards.

Phase I also includes expanded use of digital work instructions, improved tooling, ergonomic workstations and advanced inspection technologies.

Pierce said these changes add to other recent Appleton campus investments, including advanced automation, robotics, fabrication technologies and expanded paint capacity.

Across its operations, the company said it has added more than 500,000 square feet of facility space, invested over $70 million to date and hired about 800 new team members.

Bass added: “With High Flow, we’re embedding continuous improvement into every stage of production.

“This approach helps eliminate waste, simplify work and elevate customer quality while creating a more consistent, predictable manufacturing process that supports our teams and our customers.”

Additional phases of the High Flow Line are planned as Pierce continues applying its modernised production model across operations.

MES-New Mexico becomes Rosenbauer dealer for apparatus sales and service

Rosenbauer America has appointed MES-New Mexico as its authorised dealer for apparatus sales and service in the State of New Mexico.

Rosenbauer America announced that MES-New Mexico will operate from a full service facility in Las Cruces, New Mexico, with in house and mobile service capabilities for fire departments across the state.

The appointment follows a transition in dealer representation in the region, which was previously managed by Artesia.

Rosenbauer America also welcomed Shannon Cherry, Apparatus Sales Manager, MES New Mexico, and the service team to its dealer network.

Service support for fire departments statewide

Rosenbauer America stated that the change is intended to strengthen its presence in the region and raise service and support for fire departments across New Mexico.

Since 2001, MES has supplied SCBA and PPE in the United States through a national network of sales representatives and certified mobile service technicians.

Rosenbauer delivers first fire truck simulator for China airport training

China receives first fire truck simulator

Rosenbauer has put the first fire truck simulator into service in China through a mobile system installed in a trailer and delivered to a Beijing company with a training centre in Wuhan.

The simulator was delivered to Super Umbrella, which specialises exclusively in airport fire departments.

The trailer-based system can be installed for use anywhere and is intended to support training for airport fire truck operators.

Alexander Schneckenreither, Managing Director of Rosenbauer China, said: “With the mobile simulator, you have the ability to conduct training and instruction anywhere and without extensive preparatory work.”

Training can be carried out without being tied to a specific time or location.

Rosenbauer that this is especially relevant for airport fire departments, where drills can be difficult or impossible to carry out during flight operations.

It also said that there are almost no live-fire simulators at airports in China.

China simulator covers driving and tactical training

The company said the simulator uses a generic cockpit with five displays and controls similar to those of the PANTHER, allowing it to be used for multiple vehicle types.

The training scenarios cover driving as well as firefighting operations.

Schneckenreither said: “It is a driving and tactical simulator that allows you to intensively train both the approach to the scene and the correct application of firefighting techniques in a wide variety of training scenarios—from basic training to complex scenarios including operational tactics, fire suppression, and communication with incident command,”

Rosenbauer states that the simulator recreates airport grounds and cockpit procedures such as buckling up, starting the engine and releasing the parking brake.

It also includes the operation of firefighting equipment including front and roof monitors.

Some scenarios at a virtual airport with two runways were pre-programmed at the customer’s request.

Trainers have their own room in the trailer for control and observation.

They can also create their own scenarios or change existing ones in real time, including the placement of additional vehicles or aircraft and changes to weather conditions.

Rosenbauer noted that many fire truck drivers in China come from truck or bus driving backgrounds rather than firefighting.

Schneckenreither said: “This is precisely where using a simulator makes a lot of sense.

“Drivers can familiarize themselves with the vehicle without risk and already have a certain level of routine in operating it before they take the wheel of a real vehicle with a crew,”

Rosenbauer states that there are around 50 PANTHER-type airport fire trucks in service in China, alongside other fire trucks that can also be used in simulator training.

Schneckenreither added: “The Civil Aviation Administration of China has already expressed interest.

“The simulator offers real added value in the training and continuing education of drivers and can thus become an important tool for training and education.”

ZIEGLER sets out INTERSCHUTZ 2026 trade fair plans

ZIEGLER will present firefighting vehicles, pump systems and extinguishing systems at INTERSCHUTZ 2026 in the outdoor area K66 and Pavilion 35.

The company said the stand will include new products, digital operations management systems, interactive presentations and live demonstrations.

Visitors will be able to see current vehicle technology and established systems, with specialists available to answer questions and provide background information.

ZIEGLER said the exhibition will cover firefighting vehicles, specialised pump and extinguishing systems, and components from across the ZIEGLER Group.

ZIEGLER links event plans to 2025 performance

Hyundai unveils firefighting robot for hazardous fire scene deployment

Firefighting robot video follows agency handover

Hyundai Motor Group has released a video introducing its Unmanned Firefighting Robot after the system was unveiled and donated to South Korea’s National Fire Agency on 24 February 2026.

The video, titled A Safer Way Home, was released on 2 March and presents the robot as a disaster response platform developed with Hyundai Motor Company, Kia, Hyundai Rotem, Hyundai Mobis and the National Fire Agency (NFA).

The Unmanned Firefighting Robot is designed for deployment in active fire scenes where collapse, explosion, high temperatures, toxic gas or dense smoke make access difficult for firefighters.

It remotely identifies conditions at the scene, approaches the source of the fire and extinguishes the blaze.

The video includes field footage, photographs and testimony from active-duty firefighters.

Im Pal Soon, a rescue team leader from the Central 119 Rescue Headquarters who operates the Unmanned Firefighting Robots, provides narration in the campaign video.

The footage also includes a factory fire in North Chungcheong Province, South Korea, on 30 January, which the Group described as the first real-world use case for the technology.

Robot design and operational features

According to Hyundai Motor Group, the robot is based on HR-SHERPA, a multi-purpose unmanned vehicle developed for military use, and combines remote operation with vision enhancement and a thermal management package.

Its body includes a self-spraying water-cooling system and an insulation structure intended to support operation in temperatures of up to 800 degrees Celsius and protect the battery and electric control systems.

The robot includes an advanced self-driving assistance system that recognises terrain and obstacles to reduce collision risk in curved, narrow or obstacle-dense environments.

It has a top speed of 50 kph and can handle inclines of up to 60 percent longitudinally and 40 percent transversely.

It can also cross vertical barriers up to 300 mm.

An AI vision-enhancing camera uses short and long wave infrared thermal imaging sensors to transmit real-time video in dense smoke and high heat.

A high-pressure self-illuminating hose reel uses a photoluminescent hose that emits light in dark conditions and is intended to support orientation and escape routes in low-visibility spaces such as underground areas.

The 6×6 in-wheel motor system places a motor in each wheel, allowing 360-degree rotation in place and supporting manoeuvrability in confined spaces.

Hyundai Motor Group said the electrical modules are waterproof and dustproof, and that removing the need for a separate drive shaft improves drive efficiency and control.

Future firefighting role set out by agency and Group

The Group said the robot’s longer-term role is as a data acquisition platform that digitises disaster scenes and uses machine learning to analyse conditions such as smoke volume, fire scale and temperature.

The future plan described by the Group, the NFA and the National Fire Research Institute is for a fully autonomous system that can assess conditions, analyse the fire’s origin and suppression priorities, and calculate an extinguishing method after deployment.

Seung-ryong Kim, Acting Commissioner of the National Fire Agency, said: “The true value of this robot is not merely its heat resistance or fire suppression power, but its role as a ‘Physical AI’ that operates in actual disaster sites.

“In extreme environments where firefighters cannot enter, it will collect and learn from real-world operational data to develop into a sophisticated disaster response platform.

“This will usher in an era of hybrid convergence where humans and robots overcome their respective limitations, marking a ‘paradigm shift for AI in firefighting.’”

The Group said it plans to continue developing related technologies and expanding support for on-site response capabilities, and linked the robot campaign to other support programmes for uniformed services in Korea.

SylvanSport’s GO. Rapid Response heads to FDIC 2026

SylvanSport will present its GO. Rapid Response trailer at the FDIC International Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, from 20 to 25 April 2026, with the exhibitor hall open from 23 to 25 April.

The company said first responders, fire, emergency and rescue professionals will be able to learn how teams can deploy, haul and operate the system in mission-critical environments.

GO. Rapid Response is described as a lightweight trailer for fire and rescue operations.

It is designed to shift from a transporter to a hauler and then into a mobile command centre or field shelter.

Rosenbauer to supply 26 Dutch airport fire vehicles

The Dutch Ministry of Defence has awarded a contract for 26 Rosenbauer PANTHER 6×6 vehicles to renew the airport firefighting vehicle fleet in the Netherlands.

Rosenbauer announced that the order will be handled by Kenbri Fire Fighting, its exclusive partner in the Netherlands, and the vehicles will replace the crash tenders currently in use at airports.

Andreas Zeller, Chief Sales Officer at Rosenbauer International AG, said: “This order once again highlights the strong international position of the Rosenbauer PANTHER as a leading aircraft rescue firefighting vehicle.

Rosenbauer vehicles include HRET and roof turret configurations

Rosenbauer said seven vehicles will be delivered with high reach extendable turrets (HRET) and 19 vehicles will be equipped with roof turrets.

The HRET units include an extendable telescopic arm that reaches around 16 metres and allows firefighting from a distance.

Water, foam or extinguishing powder can be dispensed with precision through the extinguishing arm.

The roof turret vehicles use electrically remote controlled turrets with flow rates of up to 9,000 litres per minute and throw ranges exceeding 90 metres.

The vehicles accelerate from 0 to 80 km/h in less than 33 seconds to support rapid response to major fires.

PANTHER 6×6 designed for airport firefighting operations

Rosenbauer said the PANTHER 6×6 is designed for airport use and includes high engine performance and off road capability.

The vehicles also include high extinguishing agent capacity with pumping and monitoring systems designed for rapid firefighting operations.

The crash tested cabin is ergonomically designed with all round visibility and assistance systems intended to support crew safety and comfort.

The vehicles comply with international International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and are tailored to the operational requirements of Dutch airport fire services.

US fire truck orders face five-year delays

Fire trucks face longer waits and higher costs

Fire departments across the United States are facing delivery delays of up to five years for new apparatus as prices continue to rise.

InvestigateTV reported that the issue has become a national challenge affecting response capability, fleet management and long-term procurement planning.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, fire departments typically waited around a year for a new fire engine after placing an order.

Jason Shivers, division chief of Forsyth County Fire Department in metro Atlanta and chair of the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ emergency vehicle management section, said: “Before 2020, the fire chiefs of North America could fairly accurately know how long it was going to take.”

Shivers said: “You could expect to get a fire engine in about 12 months, maybe 14, maybe 16. That was consistent for many years before the pandemic.”

Supply chain disruption slowed manufacturing, shut down plants and delayed parts shipments, pushing delivery windows from months into years.

Shivers said: “Today, unfortunately, an order may take up to four years, sometimes five years.”

Harold Theus, fire chief of Alachua County Fire Rescue in north-central Florida, said the price of a fire engine in his department rose from roughly $550,000 in 2022 to $915,000 by December 2025.

The increase represents a 64% rise over four years for equipment that has remained largely unchanged.

Shivers said the national price floor for a new pumper engine is now at least $1 million.

Theus said: “I keep thinking we’ve hit the ceiling. I don’t know where the ceiling is. For the taxpayer, it needs to be soon.”

Why delays in fire trucks orders have grown

InvestigateTV reported that fire service leaders said the backlog has worsened as departments placed extra orders to secure production slots.

As delivery timelines stretched, many departments tried to get ahead of longer waits by ordering earlier or ordering more than they once would have.

Shivers said: “The chiefs of America have been part of the problem.

“The natural reaction was to say, ‘If I’ve got to wait that long, maybe I need to double that order.

“Maybe I need to triple that order.’”

Shivers said: “It’s cyclical. And we’ve aggravated the problem because of the number of orders we’ve tried to put in to get ahead of the next guy.”

Industry leaders also said the custom-build model for fire apparatus has slowed production.

Fire engines are often built to the specifications of individual departments rather than produced through a standardised assembly process.

Shivers said: “Firefighters hate two things: change and the way things are.

“We are very, very stuck in the tradition of the fire service. We are very proud of being stuck in the tradition of the fire service.”

Some departments are now purchasing stock vehicles or demonstration units through dealer allocations to shorten delivery timelines.

Forsyth County has used that approach for trucks, and Alachua County Fire Rescue bought seven stock ambulances with a 12-month delivery timeline.

Theus said: “We did have to give some things up. We were in a situation where we didn’t have enough ambulances on the road.”

Older fleets stay in service as parts remain hard to source

InvestigateTV also reported that departments are facing shortages of replacement parts for existing vehicles, leaving some apparatus out of service.

Keith Durden, a fire apparatus service technician with more than 35 years’ experience in the industry, said some trucks are waiting on components that are no longer made or are unavailable.

Durden said: “There are fire trucks on the road right now that if a part fails, there isn’t a replacement part still manufactured or in stock.”

He said two fire trucks in the Caribbean were sitting out of service while crews waited for a part to arrive.

In Alachua County, a 2009 ladder truck due for retirement in 2024 remains in frontline service while the department waits for its replacement, which is expected in January 2027.

When that vehicle is out of service, the department has no backup aerial apparatus.

Asked whether crews still respond to incidents without an aerial ladder available, Theus said: “without aerial device? Yes, we do.”

Theus said smaller departments are especially exposed when a single breakdown or crash can remove a vehicle from service.

Industry groups including the International Association of Fire Chiefs are looking at standardised apparatus specifications for different operating environments as departments continue managing ageing fleets and longer procurement cycles.

Darley reports new product launches and supplier recognition

Darley update outlines spring initiatives

Darley has used its March and April edition of Inside Darley to outline updates on a new data platform, supplier recognition, defence manufacturing activity and product plans for April’s Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC).

Paul Darley introduced the issue and said the spring and summer Darley Times newsletter includes a feature on Lee Wise, Darley’s new president, alongside operational updates from across the company.

The update introduces the Darley Data Center at DarleyData.com.

The platform allows fire departments to compare operational data with up to four other departments, including response times, duration on scene and incident categories.

The idea for the platform came from Ed Tiesenga, village trustee at Oak Brook, Illinois, who had questioned his local fire department about response times and related performance information.

The newsletter also reports that Pierce Manufacturing named Darley its supplier of the year for 2025.

Darley linked the award to teams in Chippewa Falls and at its headquarters in Itasca who support those accounts.

Mike Darley, one of six fourth generation family members at the company, is set to manage the Pierce account and Oshkosh accounts alongside other large defence prime contractor relationships.

Darley sets out certification and FDIC plans

The newsletter also outlines Darley’s defence manufacturing activity and its progress with Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC).

Darley said the company was among the first 300 of roughly 60,000 defence manufacturers in the United States to receive the third-party certification required to work with federal government customers.

The update also sets out product plans for FDIC in Indianapolis from 21 to 23 April.

Darley plans to present new wildland equipment at the event, including a wildland pump module and a dual control panel designed for Kubota wildland pumps.

The company also intends to display unmanned aircraft systems, reflecting its involvement in aerial drones, underwater drones and robotic drones, along with counter-drone technology from Dedrone.

Elsewhere in the newsletter, Darley notes that employees and the Chicago Tribune named the company one of the best places to work, following similar recognition from Crain’s Chicago Business and Deloitte in the previous year.

Paris Le Bourget adds fourth electric ARFF vehicle to Striker Volterra fleet

Groupe ADP has ordered a fourth Oshkosh Striker Volterra 6×6 Electric Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicle for Paris Le Bourget Airport.

Oshkosh Airport Products announced the order, which follows a public procurement procedure that led to the initial purchase of three Striker Volterra Electric ARFF vehicles announced in 2024.

The latest purchase represents the airport’s first repeat Striker order.

The first three vehicles were delivered in early December 2025.

Vehicle configuration and operating profile

Oshkosh Airport Products described Paris Le Bourget Airport as Europe’s largest executive and business aviation airport, located immediately north of Paris.

The airport’s operating environment requires ARFF vehicles capable of responding across a dense urban setting and supporting a range of operational scenarios.

The Striker Volterra fleet uses an Oshkosh electric powertrain paired with an electro mechanical infinitely variable transmission.

This configuration enables zero emissions operation during station entry, standby periods and low speed movement.

Equipment and performance features

Oshkosh Airport Products stated that all four vehicles were configured to match one another in order to simplify operator training and support long term fleet management.

The vehicles include bus style stack doors for compartment access, a camera based mirror system designed to improve visibility and an extensive lighting package for scene illumination.

Three vehicles are equipped with a roof turret.

The fourth vehicle includes a Snozzle High Reach Extendable Turret (HRET).

Performance specifications include a low attack bumper turret and roof turret with flow rates up to 79 litres per second.

The vehicles also include TAK 4 Independent Suspension, a 10,500 litre water tank and an 800 litre foam tank.

Each unit is fitted with a 7,570 litres per minute water pump and the Oshkosh Eco EFP Foam System.
