Colombia has become the first country in Latin America to introduce a national wildfire detection programme using satellite technology.

The initiative follows a new partnership between the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) and OroraTech, supported by local representative GeoSpatial.

According to OroraTech, the pilot programme deploys the company’s Wildfire Solution (WFS) platform, which combines thermal satellite imagery with artificial intelligence to detect and track wildfires in near real time.

More than 700 members of the National Disaster Risk Management System have been trained to use the WFS platform.

UNGRD has also conducted over 15 virtual and in-person sessions nationwide to support regional adoption and improve operational understanding of the platform.

California to create public wildfire catastrophe model

Legislation to create a fully transparent public wildfire catastrophe model was signed by California Governor Newsom on Friday 10 October.

The law will give consumers the ability to push back on secret wildfire risk algorithms insurance companies use to raise rates in California.

The legislation, SB 429, was authored by Senator Dave Cortese. It charges California universities and the Department of Insurance with creating the model and funding was approved in the 2025 budget.

SB 429 requires full public access to all aspects of the wildfire catastrophe model, including all “documentation and programs” and “underlying data and algorithms” of the model.

Current regulations in California

Under current regulations, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara specifically exempted insurance companies from disclosing the same information about the private black-box models they use to set insurance rates.

California regulations require home insurance companies to offer discounts to consumers who meet any of ten wildfire safety measures or who live in a certified wildfire safe community.

The discounts however are often negligible and insurance companies can avoid them by simply choosing not to sell a customer insurance. 

Balber concluded: “Consumers must be rewarded for making their homes – and by extension our communities – safer.

“Insurance companies should not be allowed to continue pushing all the cost of climate change on the public.”

New data shows wildfires inflicting record economic damage worldwide

Wildfire disasters becoming more severe globally

Wildfires are becoming more frequent, deadly and costly worldwide, according to a new study from the University of Tasmania published in the journal Science.

Researchers found that more than 43% of the costliest wildfire disasters since 1980 occurred in the past decade.

The study examined the 200 most damaging wildfire events relative to national gross domestic product (GDP), using data from the University of California, Merced, and insurer Munich Re.

Calum Cunningham, Research Fellow at the Fire Center at the University of Tasmania, said: “We’re now seeing societal effects of fire that are much larger than ever before, fueled by climate change.”

Billion-dollar wildfire events concentrated in past decade

The analysis identified 43 wildfire events since 1980 that generated direct losses of $1 billion or more.

Over half of those billion-dollar fires occurred in the past ten years.

Most of the costliest events were recorded in North America, where higher-value infrastructure and expanding urban development near wildlands increased exposure to loss.

According to the US Fire Administration, more than 60,000 communities in the US are now located in these at-risk zones.

The researchers noted that the frequency of billion-dollar fires has accelerated in parallel with worsening drought conditions and hotter temperatures.

Rising human impact and gaps in disaster planning

The study found that the frequency of deadly wildfires has increased alongside economic losses.

Cunningham said: “Fire disasters are not only influenced by climate change. They are also influenced by the way we manage built and natural environments.”

Researchers identified gaps in disaster adaptation, including communication and evacuation planning, as factors that continue to contribute to loss of life.

The study highlighted several high-impact fires from the past decade, including the 2016 fires in Canada, the 2017 California fires and the 2018 Camp Fire in Paradise, which killed 85 people and caused about $16 billion in losses.

In 2020, California wildfires produced an estimated $100 million in emissions damages.

The 2023 Lahaina fire in Hawaii killed 102 people.

The researchers noted that several recent events, including the 2024 Valparaiso fires in Chile and the early 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, were not included in the main dataset.

Cunningham said the Los Angeles fires were “literally off the charts,” generating around $65 billion in direct losses, more than double any previous wildfire disaster.

Two-way data integration launched for wildfire response

TracPlus and OroraTech have announced a two-way data integration that combines aircraft tracking, drop event intelligence and satellite-derived fire perimeter data to support faster wildfire response decisions.

According to both companies, the integration links TracPlus’ live aircraft tracking and drop event data with OroraTech’s space-based wildfire perimeter insights in real time.

The companies said the joint capability will allow fire commanders to view aircraft operations and active fire zones simultaneously, creating a shared operational picture for both ground and aerial units.

The integration will also allow TracPlus drop data to feed into OroraTech’s fire spread prediction model, helping firefighters visualise how suppression efforts affect fire behaviour.
