“There are many existing ways to introduce automation techniques into documentation, such as investing in structured/xml style authoring.

“This can be used to increase efficiency, organisation, and to keep all relevant documents up to date at once without compromising on accuracy or human led information control.

Importantly, these connections to sites are secure through cloud gateways, providing a range of details regarding the status of the system and replicating the information available from the on-site safety panel. 

In terms of information, its availability and accessibility are increasing significantly through digitalisation. Information derived through BIM not only allows the details of the original design to be retained but also enables changes to be tracked and controlled throughout the life of the building as it evolves.

It has also led to the introduction of the ‘building twin’, a digital, multi-dimensional machine-readable copy of a physical building, which helps to simulate the impact of any changes.

Using BIM to combine models with real-life data is enabling more informed decision making, assessing how different factors are likely to impact outcomes. 

Finally, there is automation. Through using information intelligently, efficiencies in design can be realised. Test plans can be created and automatically performed and reported, with faults identified automatically which can then be investigated and, if required, repaired.  

So what are the challenges in terms of AI continuing to develop in its contribution to fire safety? 

One of the issues is undoubtedly the sheer magnitude of data that is now available and finding ways to ensure that this is meaningful and useful rather than simply being data for data’s sake. We are already in the world of so called ‘Big Data’ and are moving into the era of ‘Hyper Data’ – the extremely large and diverse sets of data (both structured and unstructured) that are growing exponentially as the reliance on digital technologies increases.

The wealth of data that is now available through connected devices is a challenge – intelligent analysis is required to produce valuable insights and to identify future trends as the sheer volume means that traditional data processing software is often unable to store it efficiently or use it meaningfully.

The selected projects will compete for a share of over $1 million in funding.

The semi-finalists were chosen by an independent panel of experts in fire management, forestry, and technology.

Each solution was assessed based on technological feasibility, growth potential, environmental and social impact, and originality.

The competition aims to improve approaches to living with and managing wildfire risk.

Innovations range from AI tools to cultural fire practices

The selected projects cover a wide range of wildfire management strategies.

Plumas Wood Fiber, a California-based semi-finalist, has developed a method to convert forest thinning byproducts into a sustainable alternative for horticultural use.

The Sierra Fund, based in Nevada City, California, has created tools to help Tribal Nations incorporate traditional ecological knowledge into land management and fire stewardship.

Other innovations include AI-driven wildfire risk assessment, robotic fire containment systems, autonomous drones for cultural burns, and biochar production techniques.

These solutions address different aspects of fire prevention, suppression, and ecological restoration.

The Fire Grand Challenge, supported by organizations including the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation, the Coca-Cola Foundation, Esri, and Planet Labs, received 92 technical applications and over 50 partner community applications from 20 countries.

Finalists will be announced in March 2025, with each receiving $50,000 to test their solutions in real-world conditions.

The competition will culminate in December 2025, when the Grand Prize winner will be named.

Capita’s Fire Service College (FSC) hosted Guy Martin at its training site in Moreton-in-Marsh for an episode of his four-part Proper Jobs series.

Martin took part in intensive firefighter training, experiencing the physical and technical demands of the role.

He underwent instruction in casualty extraction using heavy rescue tools and performed a rescue from a smoke-filled compartment, demonstrating the critical decision-making involved in fire and rescue operations.

Clair Mowbray, director at the Fire Service College, said: “We were delighted to host Guy Martin at the College.

In filming the action, Guy put the spotlight on the brave and often underappreciated job firefighters do every day to an audience of millions of TV and streaming viewers.”

She added that the College continues to invest in training facilities and programmes to support the next generation of firefighters.

Martin shared his experience of the training: “The Fire Service College really opened my eyes up. All the students were keen as keen.

“And then even the instructors who’ve been there for years are still saying it’s the best job in the world. Amazing type of person. Yeah, massive respect.”

AI-powered analysis updates Churches Fire & Security’s customer service

Churches Fire & Security, the fully integrated fire safety company from the UK, has successfully updated its customer service operations through the Sabio Group‘s AI-powered analysis programme.

The company partnered with digital customer experience (CX) transformation specialists Sabio Group to conduct an Intent Capture & Analysis (IC&A) process, analysing over 25,000 customer calls to identify key pain points and improvement opportunities.

The analysis unveiled that 17% of all incoming calls, more than 16,000 annually, were simply requests to test fire alarms, representing the most common reason for customer contact.

This revelation has since prompted Churches to develop automated customer journeys through their online portal, potentially freeing up thousands of hours of customer service time.

Rather than investing in an entirely new customer service infrastructure, Churches Fire & Security opted for a more targeted approach based on actual customer interaction data. 

The company is now implementing various automation initiatives, including a PCI-compliant payment system integrated with their telephony infrastructure, after discovering that billing and invoice payments were the second most common reason for customer contact.
