Amthal secures multi-site security and life safety contract

Amthal has been awarded a planned maintenance contract to cover Barnet and Southgate College across all its three sites.

According to the company, this contract will ensure a reliable, rapid response and coordinated approach for the benefit of staff, students and visitors.

Barnet and Southgate College

Barnet and Southgate College is a large further education provider operating across three main campuses in Barnet, Southgate and Colindale.

The college supports a diverse student population across academic, vocational and technical programmes with sites that include teaching blocks, workshops, specialist learning environments and high footfall communal areas.

Given the scale and movement of people across the estate, maintaining life safety and security systems is a core operational requirement.

Ensuring safety

Amthal highlighted that it was selected to cover the college’s intruder alarm, fire alarm, Paxton access control and IP CCTV systems across all three sites.

The scope of works includes routine maintenance, system monitoring and ongoing technical support to ensure all systems remain compliant, fully operational and aligned with the college’s safeguarding and estates strategy.

“Essential to minimise disruption”

Pritesh Dattani, Soft Facilities Manager at Barnet and Southgate College said: “Managing life safety and security systems across three busy campuses requires a joined-up approach.

“We consolidated maintenance under a single provider to ensure consistent performance, improved visibility and reduced fragmentation across systems and sites.

“At this scale, reliability, fast fault response and coordinated maintenance planning are essential to minimise disruption to teaching and campus activity.

“Having Amthal in place gives us confidence that fire, intruder, access control and CCTV systems are managed within a consistent framework, supporting safeguarding and operational continuity across the college,” Dattani concluded.

Deployment

The complexity of the estate is reflected in the scale of the systems in place.

The intruder alarm infrastructure spans 800 circuits across 10 monitored panels, providing coverage across multiple buildings and departments with varying access requirements.

Amthal explained that the fire alarm system comprises 1,569 devices connected through 15 networked panels, designed to ensure early detection and coordinated response across densely occupied learning environments.

Access control is managed through 483 Paxton controlled doors, supporting controlled movement across campuses while allowing operational flexibility for staff and students.

In addition, Amthal said that the 452 IP CCTV cameras provide visual coverage across key internal and external areas, supporting safeguarding, incident review and day to day site management.

The company also now also supports the installation works delivered through the college’s contractors, helping ensure new systems integrate effectively with existing infrastructure and maintain overall system integrity as the estate develops.

Can you give us a brief introduction to Amthal and its place in the fire and safety industry?

There’s a real commitment to doing things the right way right from the start, which creates a strong foundation for delivering quality and building trust with customers.

Amthal is celebrating 25 years this year, how has it navigated the industry over this period?

Over the last 25 years, Amthal has responded to industry change by evolving its focus from traditional fire safety to presenting life safety systems.

This reflects how customer needs have shifted, with greater emphasis on integrated, people-first solutions.

We’ve adapted by investing in technology, strengthening compliance and building a structure that supports consistent service across the UK.

What’s driven this progress is a practical mindset: listening, learning and improving.

From day one, we’ve aimed to deliver work we’re proud of, with the flexibility to grow responsibly alongside our customers and partners.

How is Amthal working with the industry to tackle the skills shortage?

We operate in a very busy sector, striving to address the skills shortage in life safety and fire protection by developing skills, building expertise and shaping future leaders in fire and security.

Our new Fast-Track Programme is designed to accelerate technical knowledge, compliance and hands-on experience, with direct involvement from our senior management team.

We continue to invest in apprenticeships and run a rolling recruitment programme to bring in and support new talent.

Amthal expands international fire protection services

As reported by Amthal, the UK-based fire safety and security specialist has expanded its services to become an international provider of fire protection solutions.

Amthal is working closely with key clients in sectors such as Oil & Gas, Data Centres, Petroleum, Energy, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

The company recently completed the first of three fire and suppression pump packages for an energy project in the Middle East.

The programme involved the installation and commissioning of fire protection solutions tailored to the specific needs of the client’s modular units.

Amthal installed both main and reserve water mist systems, which are connected to a detection activation and alarm system.

Water mist technology was selected for its effectiveness in suppressing fires while minimising water usage and collateral damage.

Hazardous environment safety measures

The internal environment of the enclosure was classified as hazardous, requiring specialised equipment to ensure safety.

Amthal utilised ATEX-certified equipment, including lighting and control systems, to meet the stringent safety requirements.

Dave Pountney, IPL (Amthal Group Company) Business Development Manager, said: “The scope of works for the project was significant in being a highly hazardous environment, where it was critical to understand the dynamics involved.

“Designing fire protection solutions that could be seamlessly integrated into the client’s modular units while meeting strict space and weight limitations.”

Amthal’s team conducted extensive risk assessments, research, and testing to select the most suitable equipment and materials for the project.

They also collaborated with regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with local safety regulations.

Use of corrosion-resistant materials

All control and status panels were manufactured using 316 stainless steel, known for its corrosion resistance and durability.

This choice of material ensured the longevity and reliability of the fire protection systems, even in harsh environmental conditions.

Atrium Hotel enhances fire safety with Amthal

The Atrium Hotel, located within a five-minute drive from Heathrow Airport, has partnered with Amthal Fire and Security to enhance its fire safety maintenance service.

The collaboration aims to ensure the safety of both staff and guests by adhering to the latest fire safety legislation.

The hotel, known for its 573 ultra-chic bedrooms, worked closely with Amthal to develop a comprehensive maintenance programme.

As an approved Honeywell Gent partner, Amthal utilised Honeywell’s Connected Life Safety Services (CLSS), a cloud platform designed to maintain fire systems across the hotel facilities with minimal disruption.

Amthal’s implementation of Honeywell CLSS at the Atrium Hotel allows for real-time visibility and efficient decision-making regarding fire safety.

“The safety and security of our hotel experience is critical. Amthal offered advice and practical support on how this could be achieved remotely with Honeywell CLSS.”

As part of the fire safety maintenance, Amthal is responsible for testing emergency lighting, emergency voice communications, and regular fire door testing.

Mark Hunter, Honeywell Gent Business Manager, emphasised the importance of maintaining fire systems: “What Amthal demonstrates at The Atrium Hotel is the importance of not just installing the right specification of systems, but also maintaining them to maximise performance.”

Hunter noted: “This can be achieved with CLSS remotely to ensure less disruption and time on site from testing, with push notification of events to mobile devices to alert staff of any specific findings.”

Amthal delivers dedicated CPD seminar on fire technology

Amthal has delivered its first dedicated CPD seminar “Comply, Stay Alive!” on fire technology, to a leading integrated property consultancy.

In partnership with Honeywell Gent and Motorola Avigilon, the CPD was followed by the successful delivery of the Marlborough Science Academy Full Site Wide Fire Alarm Upgrade using GENT’s latest technology including Connected Life Safety Service.

Marlborough Science Academy is one of Amthal’s flagship CCTV installations, presenting a fully integrated 50 camera end-to-end Avigilon system deployed to protect pupils and staff and help maintain a friendly safe environment.
