Fire Brigades Union donates 10k to Syria and Turkey earthquake appeal

The Firefighters100 fund, which was set up and run by the Fire Brigades Union, has made a £10,000 donation to the Syria and Turkey earthquake fund to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected by the disaster.

Dozens of UK firefighters, including them FBU members have travelled to the affected area in recent weeks with UK International Search and Rescue (UK ISAR).

Tracy Doyle, a firefighter and FBU activist, was deployed to Hatay in Turkey as part of a 77-person team. Shortly after returning, Doyle reported to FBU members on her work searching and locating casualties in the rubble of the disaster, and urged her fellow firefighters to support aid initiatives in the region providing medical treatment, shelter, food and clean water.

As well as crowdfunding for the Disaster Emergency Committee appeal, the FBU has now backed up its international solidarity work with this substantial donation from its’ Lottery fund.  

Speaking of her work, Tracy Doyle said: “Seeing a whole city razed to the ground – homes gone, rubble everywhere – was overwhelming. Even harder to take in was the impact on the survivors. People were sleeping in the streets, huddled around fires to keep warm as temperatures dropped below freezing. The only items they had were the clothes on their back. It broke my heart when people would approach us and ask us to remove their wives, husbands, and children from the rubble. The image of body bags in rows lining the streets will never leave me.

“Being a firefighter is about solidarity and humanitarianism. We do everything we can to help people – it doesn’t matter where they’re from, or where they are.”

‘Solidarity is crucial’

Speaking about the donation FBU National Officer Tam McFarlane, said: “As firefighters and trade unionists, humanitarianism and solidarity is crucial to everything we do. This is a disaster that has devasted thousands of lives and the FBU were determined to assist. The Firefighters100 fund, funded by the weekly Firefighters100 lottery, was set up to support people affected by fire or disaster, especially where there is a particular need for the support of skilled fire and rescue intervention, and we wanted to respond to these devastating events.

“The work of Tracy and her firefighting colleagues has been inspirational and is in the finest traditions of our service and our union. We hope this £10,000 donation assists those in need and we call on all members and supporters to assist where they can and support the Disasters Emergency Committee.”

Dahua Technology donates food supplies after Beirut explosion

The massive explosion that shook Beirut on August 4th had a devastating impact on Lebanon and its citizens killing at least 180 people and injuring thousands. At the same time, tens of thousands of the city’s residents were left homeless after the blast destroyed their houses and properties. International organizations and peacekeepers from all over the world have reached out to send daily necessities and medical supplies to the region and assist in the reconstruction of the affected areas.

Dahua Technology and its Lebanon team immediately contacted the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Lebanon after the blast at Beirut Port, and donated 350 cases of food supplies to help the affected residents tide over this extremely pressing circumstance.

PELI agrees to donate to fire and humanitarian services

After its large donation of PELI 9600 Lighting systems to the Italian Red Cross at the beginning of the crisis, PELI decided to help its closer community in Barcelona; the city where the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) headquarters is located.

PELI’s donation to the ‘Fundació Patrimoni Natural de Matadepera´ includes fire & rescue teams, forest preservation and law enforcement entities

The foundation was created for the preservation and to improve safety against natural hazards, fires and emergencies, with the ultimate goal of reducing the loss of assets and natural heritage in our territory: Matadepera and the Natural Park of Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac. Approximately 45 torches PELI 1910 has been given to them.

Other entities belonging to the same Foundation such as a unit of the local Police has also received a selection of 400 models including PELI 7110, 7610 and 7620 from PELI. Furthermore, several Fire departments from Barcelona and Catalunya have received 1380 units of PELI 3325Z0 and almost 50 units of PELI 9430; the Forest Agents and Fire departments also received approximately 1020 headlamps of model PELI 2785Z1. Lastly, the Red Cross of Barcelona has received 300 headlamps.

Cottenham firefighter rallies community to donate face masks

A Cottenham based firefighter has rallied his local community to donate face masks to a hospice charity. Crew Commander Roger Pake raised more than £2,000 to cover the cost of 700 N95 masks for staff at Arthur Rank Hospice in Cambridge.

Roger said: “I saw the plea from the charity on Facebook and felt I could help. I know people that have family members looked after by the hospice, plus my wife works there so I am fully aware of the great work they do. This is why I was very keen to do something to help.”

Roger divides his time between running his own business as an electrician and being available to respond to emergencies as an on-call firefighter from Cottenham Fire Station.

He added: “I knew I could use contacts from my business to source masks for the staff at the hospice, so decided to see if my Facebook friends wanted to get involved and donate some money to fund them. I have been truly overwhelmed by the response and the generosity of people. I had no idea that I’d receive this much support.”

Hospice Matron Carly Love added: “We are so grateful to Roger and all those who contributed to the collection and the purchase of 700 masks. This is vital equipment that the hospice currently needs to enable the excellent care that they deliver in the community to continue and ensure that the patients that still need the help of the hospice continue to receive this vital service. We were truly touched by this generous donation; it really will make a difference.”
