Women in Fire Engineering launch first conference

In 2021, the Institution of Fire Engineers launched the women’s networking group. One year on, and the group continues to go from strength to strength and has announced it is holding its first in-person conference on 9th February 2022 at Norton Park Hotel, near Winchester.

The organisers said the event will be an opportunity for delegates to discuss, collaborate and network with a focus on empowerment: “Women often suffer with a lack of confidence which can lead to a lack of self-promotion, leaving them unseen and undervalued.  The conference aims to address this issue.”

The conference will see Dr Barbara Lane, Arup Fellow, Director of the Arup University and officer to the Arup Group Board, give the keynote speech. This will be followed by a roundtable discussion on the challenges that women face working in the fire industry.

There will be three expert presentations on empowerment topics by leading executive coaches:

  • Mel Stanley will be covering how to make an Impact
  • Sara Pardoe-Flay will speak on assertiveness & confidence
  • Sarah Farmer will provide insight on influencing skills

The conference will conclude with a Panel Q & A session.

National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers announces Annual Conference and Exhibition

The National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers has announced that its Annual Conference and Exhibition 2023 will take place on 5-7th June 2023 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Stratford upon Avon.

The long-established Annual Conference and Exhibition was missed over the lockdown year before coming back with a bang in 2022 and now NAHFO is proud to bring the event to the Midlands for 2023.

This Annual Conference and Exhibition is aimed at Fire Professionals looking to network and exchange ideas and best practices with others at the forefront of the industry. Leading industry speakers will discuss current topics that will interest and engage. There will also be a wide range of exhibiting companies who will update attendees on the very latest equipment, services and supplies available.

In addition to the main conference agenda, there are accredited CPD sessions, a trade evening followed by a social networking BBQ and a Conference Dinner and Awards evening. The subject matter of the agenda is always designed to be fresh, completely relevant and up to the minute, so speaker details and the overall theme of the event will be announced early in 2023.

Recognising the possible challenges of funding for NHS and other Healthcare delegates, the costs for attendance are pegged by NAHFO at a very reasonable level. There’s a range of delegate and exhibitor packages on offer, the most popular of which include food, refreshments and accommodation, so organisations are able to send delegates or exhibit their products and services with the knowledge there won’t be multiple further expenses to cover.

Delegates can register here and Exhibitors can register here.

About NAHFO

With 13 Branches covering all areas of the UK and Ireland, the primary aim of the Association is to protect all relevant persons in healthcare premises from fire. Other objectives include:-

  • To promote the adoption of the highest standards of fire safety in healthcare premises.
  • To improve the wider understanding of the role of Healthcare Fire Officers / Advisors / Practitioners, by all persons working in healthcare.
  • To support and develop opportunities for educating and training people in healthcare fire safety.
  • To establish liaison with other bodies on matters of common interest where this is consistent with the aim and objectives of NAHFO.

Emergency Services Show reports record turnout

The Emergency Services Show has announced that a record number of visitors attended the award-winning event at the NEC on 21 and 22 September.

The UK’s largest event for the emergency services attracted over 10,100 visitors and buyers for the first time in its history, with strong representation from across all the emergency services including police, fire and rescue, ambulance, and search and rescue.

The show’s visitors attended a programme of over 80 CPD-accredited seminars running in six theatres covering Lessons Learnt, Emerging Technologies, Health & Wellbeing, Future Policing, the College of Paramedics and, new this year, First Responder which focused on improving collaboration between the emergency services and security industries.

The indoor and outdoor exhibition featured over 450 exhibitors where visitors could source new technology and products from the leading names in public safety, medical & fire-fighting equipment, vehicles, drones, command & control, satellite & blended communications, search & rescue, extrication, water rescue, CBRNE, first response, protective clothing & uniforms, training, community safety, and station facilities.

In an exclusive interview with IFSJ, David Brown, Emergency Services Show Director, commented: “When you’re so involved in organising the event, you take everything for granted and when you take a step back like now and are asked what’s there – it’s the best and biggest show we’ve ever put on since we launched in 2006 and I believe the show now truly reflects what a fantastic sector the fire and rescue services is and the brilliant work that they do along with the other emergency services. It is truly collaboration at its best.”

Aico celebrates 30th anniversary

Aico recently celebrated 30 years of renowned market presence in Fire and Carbon Monoxide (CO) protection solutions.

Incorporated in 1990 in Oswestry, Shropshire, United Kingdom, Aico has grown over its 30-year history, with the growth being marked by the move to a new, bespoke head office.

The new 7-acre site came as a necessity as Aico’s growth and success has seen significant expansion to the team and operations. The new building provides a bold welcome to company visitors and passing traffic.

More than half of the overall site is taken up with landscaping, paying homage to the wider county’s famous green countryside, which is a key theme throughout the new build, aiming to preserve current eco-systems and encourage wildlife to flourish.

The building was designed to facilitate the company’s key goal of a healthy work environment with employee wellness to the fore. Multi-functional rooms make space for the company’s core people development practices and team building, something Managing Director, Neal Hooper attributes to being the strength of the company.

Aico MD, Neal Hooper said, “We have a passion for developing people and it shows in our culture. We hold ourselves to high standards and make sure our values of integrity, excellence, teamwork, commitment and sustainability come to life in the way we work. Each member of Aico understands that this new site is theirs and for their teams’ infrastructure to grow and develop in for years to come.”

At the beginning of the year, the Lion Quays Resort in Shropshire played host to an event marking the special occasion, with employees treated to a surprise guest speaker in the form of footballing legend Kevin Keegan. Mr. Keegan took to the stage to congratulate Aico on its 30-year anniversary and regaled staff with anecdotes from his impressive career.

Reiterating Aico’s ethos of Education, Quality, Service and Innovation, Mr. Keegan spoke of the importance of teamwork, attitude and commitment.

Technical Advisor for Aico, Dave Jennings has an impressive 26-year career with the company. He commented, “I started my career with Aico in 1994 and seeing the company’s growth over the past 26 years has been incredible. Aico has advanced and expanded and it’s great to see the new apprentices coming in now so that Aico has a future for generations to come.”
