Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority has obtained global accreditation from the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI), recognising it as an accredited international testing proctor in fire and explosion investigations.

Abu Dhabi Media Office said the authority was also officially recognised during NAFI’s annual conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The designation allows professionals from across the UAE and the region to undertake internationally recognised certifications, including Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator and Certified Vehicle Fire Investigator.

It also enables access to the Certified Fire Investigation Instructor certification.

Certification and investigator training

According to Abu Dhabi Media Office, the authority has also certified 19 investigators from its technical teams through a training programme that included accredited courses and professional assessments based on internationally recognised protocols and standards.

The programme was described as strengthening incident analysis and root cause identification.

It was also presented as supporting preventive policy development and wider safety and response systems.

Institutional development and standards

Abu Dhabi Media Office said His Excellency Brigadier Salem Abdullah bin Barak Al Dhaheri, Director General of Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority, linked the accreditation and recognition to confidence in the authority’s training system and the competence of national cadres.

The authority said qualifying fire investigators to international standards forms part of its proactive prevention systems and supports data-driven decision-making.

NAFI also commended the authority’s training and qualification systems, stating that its programmes are aligned with international standards.

Memorial fire damages tribute site near Crans-Montana

A memorial for victims of a deadly fire at a New Year party in Switzerland caught fire early on Sunday, with police saying candles left burning inside were the likely cause.

The Guardian reported the details from a statement by regional police in the south-western canton of Valais.

The memorial was a makeshift tribute to 41 people killed and 115 injured in a fire that erupted in the early hours of 1 January at Le Constellation bar in the ski resort town of Crans-Montana.

It was laden with flowers, candles and messages of condolence and had been set up near the site of the tragedy.

Regional police said it caught alight shortly before 6am on Sunday.

Images broadcast by Swiss public broadcaster RTS showed the blackened top of a white, igloo-like tarpaulin erected over the memorial to protect it from the weather, visible behind a white screen and police tape.

Police said: “Thanks to the rapid intervention of the emergency services, the fire was quickly brought under control,”

No one was injured in the fire at the memorial, police said.

Police said several commemorative objects were damaged by the flames.

A large book of remembrance, filled with messages of condolence left by those who have visited the memorial over the past five weeks, was saved, police said.

Investigation opened into cause of blaze

Police said an investigation had been opened into what caused the blaze at the memorial.

The memorial had initially been placed in front of the burned-out bar and had recently been moved a bit farther away.

Police said: “According to initial reports, the fire started near the candles placed on a table in the centre of the memorial.”

Police said: “At this stage, third-party involvement can be ruled out.”

Investigators believe the New Year inferno at Le Constellation started when champagne bottles with sparklers attached were raised too close to a ceiling in a bar crowded with revellers, igniting sound insulation foam.

The French couple who co-owned the bar, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, are facing charges of manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence and arson by negligence.

Crans-Montana’s head of public safety and a former local fire safety officer are also under criminal investigation in connection with the blaze at the bar.

The bar had not undergone mandatory annual fire inspections since 2019.

Family members voiced consternation after learning of the fire at the memorial.

Swiss bar fire investigation finds no safety inspections for five years

An investigation into the Swiss bar fire has found that no safety inspections were carried out at the venue for five years prior to the deadly incident, which broke out on NewYear’s day and killed more than 40 people.

Nicolas Féraud, the mayor of the Swiss municipality of Crans-Montana, confirmed that Le Constellation bar had not undergone any safety inspections between 2020 and 2025.

Authorities said the blaze may have been caused by sparkler candles attached to champagne bottles coming into contact with the venue’s sound-proof ceiling, raising concerns about fire safety compliance.

Speaking at a press conference, Féraud said the last full inspection of the bar took place in 2019, following an earlier review in 2018 after the merger of neighbouring municipalities Chermignon, Montana, Randogne and Mollens into the newly formed Crans-Montana authority.

The 2018 inspection resulted in the installation of a panic handle on the main entrance door, while inspectors reported no issues with the acoustic lining.

A follow-up inspection on May 13, 2019, confirmed the correction of the door handle and again raised no concerns regarding sound-proofing materials.

Both inspection reports set the venue’s maximum capacity at 100 people in the basement and 100 on the ground floor.

Courts to determine responsibility for Swiss bar fire

The inspection carried out in mid-2019 was the last before the fatal incident last week. Féraud said the failure to carry out inspections in the following years was unexplainable.

Speaking during a press conference, he said the Municipal Council had only become aware of the gap between inspections when “consulting the documents submitted to the Public Prosecutor this weekend.”

“We bitterly regret this,” Féraud said, adding that “the courts will determine the influence such a failure had in the chain of causality that led to the tragedy.”

Investigation finds two possible ignition sources

The Massachusetts Government’s Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and Department of Fire Services have released initial findings into the Gabriel House fire that occurred on 13 July 2025 in Fall River, Massachusetts.

According to State Fire Marshal Jon Davine, the blaze at the assisted living facility resulted in ten fatalities and injured almost three dozen residents and firefighters.

The preliminary investigation was led jointly by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, State Police Fire Investigation Unit, Fall River Police Department, and Fall River Fire Department.

Officials said the fire began in a resident’s room on the second floor but could not identify a single confirmed cause.

Investigators found no indication that the fire was intentionally set, nor that cooking, heating, or electrical appliances were involved in ignition.

They did find smoking materials and an oxygen concentrator in the room, but damage to the site prevented confirmation of which caused the fire.

Room of origin and evidence limitations

Investigators determined the fire originated in a room located on the left side of the second floor of Gabriel House.

The room was approximately 8 feet by 10 feet in size.

This finding was based on analysis of burn patterns, smoke damage, witness interviews, and video footage from surrounding cameras.

No signs of arson, open flame sources, or battery failures were discovered during the investigation.

The occupant of the room died in the fire, leaving no eyewitness account of the early stages of ignition.

Due to extensive fire damage, officials could not eliminate either the oxygen concentrator or smoking materials as possible causes.

Investigators classify fire cause as undetermined

The investigation followed the NFPA 921 guide, which recommends classifying fire cause as undetermined when multiple potential causes cannot be excluded.

Officials cited this standard in concluding that the Gabriel House fire had two plausible ignition sources.

Both were identified as accidental in nature.

District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III said: “The Gabriel House fire represented the greatest loss of life to fire in Massachusetts in more than 40 years.”

He added: “It was one of the worst fire-related disasters in the state’s modern history and an unprecedented tragedy for the community of Fall River.”

Role of medical oxygen in fire spread

State Fire Marshal Jon Davine reported that the presence of medical oxygen likely accelerated the spread and intensity of the fire.

Oxygen use was common in resident rooms and may have created an environment where the fire ignited more readily and burned more intensely.

“Ten vulnerable residents, primarily older adults and people with limited mobility, perished in the Gabriel House fire,” Davine said.

“Nearly three dozen residents and firefighters were injured.”

Davine added: “Home oxygen was a known factor in about 20 fire deaths and more than three dozen injuries in Massachusetts over the past 10 years.”

Investigators stated that most oxygen-related fire incidents in the state involved smoking materials, followed by candles.

Ongoing code compliance investigation

A separate inquiry is being conducted into Gabriel House’s compliance with fire safety and building codes.

This work is being led by the Fall River Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Bureau, the Department of Fire Services’ Code Compliance and Enforcement Unit, fire protection engineers, and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

Officials said the investigation includes the review of extensive documentation and may require weeks or months to complete.

Some of the relevant records are held by third-party contractors and require formal processes to access.

Investigators said the aim is to determine whether Gabriel House met all life safety obligations under state codes at the time of the fire.

London Fire Brigade promotes fire investigation careers to young women

Fire education outreach introduces students to forensic careers

London Fire Brigade has reported a series of STEM engagement activities aimed at encouraging more young women into science and engineering through fire investigation education.

Fire Investigator Lisa Wincott led a lecture for Forensic Criminology students at the University of Greenwich ahead of the 12th International Women in Engineering Day.

Wincott used real case studies, CCTV footage, and scientific analysis of fire scenes to demonstrate practical applications of forensic techniques and share career opportunities within the Brigade.

Dr Molly Ackhurst, Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Greenwich, said students described it as their “favourite class of the term”.

The Brigade confirmed that the programme forms part of a wider effort to expand awareness of STEM-related careers and support representation of women in fire and safety professions.

Students take part in hands-on fire investigation session

Following the university lecture, London Fire Brigade arranged a practical visit to Dowgate Fire Station for participating students.

During the visit, students wore fire investigation PPE, examined equipment, and identified mock evidence as part of an immersive learning experience.

They were also introduced to Smokey, the Brigade’s fire investigation dog, who demonstrated detection techniques used during real fire scenes.

First-year student Kiara Curzon said the event deepened her interest in fire investigation and allowed her to see how classroom theory connects to fieldwork.

The Brigade stated that the visit was designed to make fire careers more tangible and support academic learning with real-world examples.

Outreach expands to local secondary schools

In addition to the university programme, London Fire Brigade organised outreach to Norbury High School for Girls as part of its community STEM initiative.

Fire Investigator Lisa Wincott and Station Officer Steve Girling led interactive sessions for Year 10 pupils, focusing on forensic science, public safety, and fire scene interpretation.

The Brigade noted that this work builds on its long-term effort to diversify its workforce and increase visibility of career paths beyond frontline firefighting.

She said: “It’s important for young people to see that the fire service offers more than just firefighting. There’s a whole world of science, investigation, and public service to discover.”

Wincott added that if she could inspire a few students to pursue fire investigation as a career, she would be proud of the outcome.

STEM and fire safety promotion will continue

London Fire Brigade said it plans to continue working with schools and universities to encourage interest in STEM careers through the lens of fire science.

According to the Brigade, only 26 per cent of the UK’s STEM workforce identifies as women, prompting a need for focused outreach.

Future sessions will continue to highlight both fire safety risks and forensic science careers, linking public safety to education.

The Brigade confirmed that its Fire Investigation team will remain involved in this work throughout the year.

The organisation added that these initiatives reflect its commitment to bridging the gender gap in science and engineering.

Can you tell us about your background and transition to BlackRainbow?

I completed a 30-year policing career.
