Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere. They power e-bike commutes, cordless tools on every construction site and robot mowers in groundskeeping fleets. Their numbers grow every year and so do the number of fires they cause. In January 2026, a DSV logistics terminal in Poland burned to the ground.

In Finland, a country of roughly 5.7 million people, two battery fires made national news within this spring. In Oulu in April 2026, a family of two adults and four children were forced to evacuate their home and were subsequently hospitalised, while neighbouring apartments suffered smoke damage.

In Espoo in May 2026, a tenant noticed an e-scooter battery beginning to overheat and did exactly what every safety guideline instructs: he moved to take it away from everything else. It exploded in his face and the fire spread to an e-bike battery beside it.

Apartment destroyed, building and other apartments suffered massive smoke damages. These are not exotic events anymore. More batteries mean more failures and a failing lithium-ion battery is unlike anything else in our buildings and workplaces. Once thermal runaway begins, there is no practical way for an ordinary person to put it out.

What happens when a lithium-ion battery fails

Thermal runaway is a self-accelerating chain reaction inside the battery cell. Heat generates more heat, cell by cell and the battery becomes its own fuel and its own oxygen source. This is why a battery fire behaves so differently from a bin fire. It reignites.

It ejects burning material. Cells can rupture violently, turning the battery into a source of projectiles as the Espoo tenant learned at close range. The fire itself is only part of the danger.

A burning lithium-ion battery releases a cocktail of toxic gases, most notably hydrogen fluoride. It is dangerous even at low concentrations. In large quantities it penetrates skin and tissue, but even in the light smoke we see before visible ignition it attacks the lungs and can cause severe injury to people who never see a flame. The Oulu family were hospitalised not because flames reached them, but because smoke and gas did. This combination of unstoppable fire, violent failure and toxic gas is what makes the lithium-ion problem categorically different from the fire risks our buildings were designed for.

Three pillars of lithium-ion battery fire safety, two of which fail at the critical moment

Society currently governs this risk with three tools: guidelines, restrictions and technology. It is worth being honest about what each one can and cannot do.

Guidelines are genuinely valuable. Charge with the original charger, inspect batteries for damage, do not charge unattended, do not charge near exits. Followed properly, they greatly reduce the already small probability of a fire.

But probability reduction is all they do. Guidelines do not stop thermal runaway once it begins and they quietly assume a level of supervision that does not exist in real life. The standard instruction to “supervise charging” asks a resident to watch a battery for seven hours or a logistics operator to assign a human to every charging shelf.

Nobody does this. Everybody knows nobody does this. And as Espoo showed, even the person who notices the problem early and follows the guidance to the letter can end up in the path of the failure. Restrictions are the newer instrument and they deserve more scrutiny than they get.

Housing companies and facility operators across Europe are responding to the risk by banning e-bike and e-scooter charging indoors. On paper, the risk disappears. In practice, it goes underground.

People do not stop charging the device they depend on for their commute. They charge it in their apartment, behind a closed door, where no policy reaches and no detection exists. A prohibited risk that everyone quietly takes is not a managed risk.

It is a denied one and it surfaces exactly the way the Espoo and Oulu fires did: inside homes, where people live and sleep.

A wild west of lithium-ion battery fires solutions

Walk through any fire safety exhibition and you will find an expanding catalogue of products marketed against battery fires. Many of them solve a fraction of the problem and leave the rest untouched.

Fire pouches, blankets and battery tarps can be useful for small consumer cells, but an e-mobility battery pack in full thermal runaway generates enough sustained energy to defeat most of them in seconds rather than contain them for minutes.

Specialised battery extinguishers exist but using one effectively means approaching a device that is ejecting flame, gas and potentially projectiles. For a trained responder in protective equipment with self-contained breathing apparatus, that is workable.

For a resident, a warehouse worker or a night-shift caretaker, in normal clothing it is not a realistic instruction. Passive fireproof cabinets are a step up.

They contain the fire and protect the surrounding space from flame spread. But containment is not suppression. The reaction continues inside and the toxic gases still need somewhere to go.

The effect to people problem remains unsolved. Active suppression systems based on aerosols go further and attempt to interrupt the fire. The difficulty is that aerosols suppress visible flame without reliably stopping the chain reaction underneath it and testing has shown that suppressing the flame while the cells continue venting flammable gas can create explosive conditions. Slowing the reaction is not the same as ending it.

Stop arguing probability. Engineer for consequence of lithium-ion battery fires

The uncomfortable truth is that these fires cannot be prevented. As long as lithium-ion chemistry surrounds us, a small number of failures is a statistical certainty. The meaningful question is not ‘how to reach zero probability’, because we cannot.

It is what happens in the building when the failure occurs. Research within Finland’s national LION project points to a clear answer: water immersion.

Driven by a combination of extreme heat, prolonged drought and strong winds, the fires have spread rapidly through areas of dry vegetation and pine forest, forcing mass evacuations and placing communities across the region on alert.

Here’s what we know so far about the Bordeaux wildfires.

Where are the Bordeaux wildfires?

The largest fires are burning in the Gironde department, west of Bordeaux, where extensive areas of pine forest have provided significant fuel for the flames.

Authorities have reported that the main fire front has moved to within around 15 kilometres of the Bordeaux metropolitan area. Several nearby communities have been evacuated.

How many people have been evacuated?

More than 250,000 have been evacuated across the Gironde region as the fires have intensified.

How large is the fire?

Authorities estimate that approximately 42,000 hectares of land have been affected by the fires.

The combination of dry vegetation, resin-rich pine forests and strong winds is said to have allowed the flames to spread quickly.

Firefighting response

More than 2,500 firefighters have been deployed, supported by water-bombing aircraft, helicopters and military resources.

France has also received assistance from European partners as crews work to slow the spread of the fires, defend homes and critical infrastructure and prevent further expansion towards populated areas.

The scale of the response highlights the growing challenge posed by wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires, where fast-moving vegetation fires increasingly threaten communities, businesses and essential infrastructure.

What is causing the fires?

Authorities have linked the severity of the fires to a combination of prolonged drought, exceptionally high temperatures and strong winds, creating conditions where fires can ignite and spread rapidly.

While investigations into the causes of individual fires are ongoing, officials have warned that weather conditions remain the biggest challenge for firefighting operations.

Forecasters expect temperatures to remain high this week, with parts of south-west France approaching 40°C. Any increase in wind speed could further accelerate the spread of active fire fronts.

Travel disruption

The wildfires have caused widespread disruption across the Gironde region.

Several roads have been closed, with travellers advised to check the latest transport updates before setting out. Bordeaux Airport remains operational, although precautionary measures have been introduced in surrounding areas.

Government response

French President Emmanuel Macron has chaired crisis meetings as the government coordinates the national response to the wildfire emergency.

Emergency services remain on heightened alert, with additional resources deployed to protect communities and critical infrastructure as conditions continue to change.

A growing challenge for fire and rescue services

The Bordeaux wildfires are part of a wider wildfire crisis affecting several countries across southern Europe.

For fire and rescue services, the incident highlights the increasing operational challenges created by prolonged heatwaves, drought and more extreme fire behaviour. It also reinforces the need for robust wildfire preparedness, effective inter-agency coordination, aerial firefighting capability and stronger protection for communities located at the wildland-urban interface.

With hot and dry conditions expected to continue, firefighters face a challenging task in containing the fires and preventing further destruction in the days ahead.

Wildfire risk warnings issued as third heatwave approaches

The National Fire Chiefs Council is urging the public to take extra care as prolonged hot, dry weather raises wildfire risks across the UK

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) has issued UK wildfire risk warnings as the country enters its third heatwave since late May, with fire chiefs urging the public to take extra care outdoors to help prevent fast-spreading fires.

Temperatures are forecast to exceed 30°C across many parts of the UK this week, with some areas expected to reach around 34°C. Although the current heatwave is not expected to match the extreme temperatures seen in late June, it is forecast to last longer, increasing the likelihood of vegetation drying out and creating conditions that allow fires to ignite and spread more rapidly.

According to National Resilience data, fire and rescue services in England and Wales attended 342 wildfires between 1 January and 6 July 2026, compared with 639 during the same period last year.

While the total number of incidents remains below last year’s level, the NFCC warned that sustained warm, dry conditions are steadily increasing the threat. Grass, crops, heathland and woodland are becoming progressively drier as warm days and nights prevent vegetation from recovering moisture, raising the potential for larger and more challenging wildfire incidents in the coming weeks.

Fire and rescue services have already responded to several wildfires across southern and eastern England in recent weeks, where extended periods of dry weather have left landscapes particularly vulnerable.

The NFCC said many wildfires are caused by everyday human activity, with discarded cigarettes, disposable barbecues and litter among the most common ignition sources. The organisation is urging people to dispose of smoking materials responsibly, avoid using disposable barbecues in the countryside and take litter home to reduce the risk of accidental fires.

The current conditions are also increasing the fire risk during agricultural activities, with dried crops and the start of the harvest season creating additional hazards. Farmers and contractors are being encouraged to exercise extra caution when operating machinery and to follow seasonal fire safety guidance.

Alongside the wildfire warning, the NFCC is reminding people of the dangers posed by inland water during hot weather. As schools begin breaking up for the summer holidays, fire chiefs are urging families to avoid swimming in unsupervised rivers, lakes, reservoirs, canals and quarries, warning that cold water shock, hidden currents and submerged hazards can prove fatal despite high air temperatures.

Dave Swallow, National Fire Chiefs Council Wildfire Deputy Lead and Lead Tactical Advisor, said: “Hot, dry weather can significantly increase wildfire risk, but most wildfires start because something provides the spark. Whether it is a disposable barbecue left behind, a discarded cigarette or even a glass bottle left in the sunshine, we all have a role to play in preventing them.

“Summer should be a time for people to enjoy the outdoors, but it’s important not to underestimate the risks. Every year we see devastating wildfires and tragic drownings in inland water.

“As more schools break up for the summer holiday, we’re asking people to enjoy the warmer weather safely, look out for one another and take simple steps to help prevent avoidable tragedies.”

The NFCC is advising the public to avoid using disposable barbecues in open countryside, parks and moorland, dispose of cigarettes and matches responsibly, follow local fire risk guidance and report any fires immediately by calling 999. The organisation is also encouraging people to choose supervised swimming locations, avoid entering open water after consuming alcohol and remember the “Phone, Float, Throw” and “Float to Live” water safety advice if an emergency occurs.

Wildfire safety warning issued as fire chiefs urge caution amid warm weather

Fire chiefs have issued a wildfire safety warning ahead of expected warmer, drier conditions

Fire chiefs are urging the public to take extra care during the upcoming bank holiday, with forecasts indicating warm and dry weather that can increase the risk of wildfires and accidents around open water.

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) has renewed its appeal for vigilance as wildfire activity continues to rise. NFCC National Resilience data shows more than 270 wildfires have already been recorded in England and Wales. By November, fire and rescue services had responded to just over 1,000 wildfires in 2025, exceeding the 994 incidents recorded in 2022, previously the worst year on record.

Officials said many wildfires are preventable and are often caused by everyday behaviours such as disposable barbecues or carelessly discarded smoking materials.

Fire data from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) shows fire and rescue services in England responded to around 40,000 more incidents in the year ending December 2025 compared with the previous year, driven largely by a 29% rise in fires linked to outdoor incidents.

The NFCC is also warning of increased drowning risks during warmer weather, as more people spend time in and around water. Data from the Water Incident Database Water Incident Database, published by the National Water Safety Forum National Water Safety Forum, recorded 193 accidental drowning fatalities in the UK in 2024, with May seeing the highest monthly total at 28 deaths.

NFCC Chair Phil Garrigan said, “With the risk of wildfires increasing as we go into the warmer months, we’re asking everyone to take a few simple precautions to help keep themselves, their communities and the environment safe this summer.

“Wildfires can start quickly and spread fast, but small actions make a big difference. Avoid using disposable barbecues in parks or open countryside, take care not to drop cigarettes or leave glass behind, and follow local fire safety advice. If you see signs of fire, call 999 immediately.

“Fire and rescue services are already dealing with a high number of incidents, and by working together we can help reduce the risk and ease that pressure. Taking care outdoors helps protect homes, wildlife and open spaces for everyone.

“We’re also encouraging people to stay safe around water. Cold water can be a shock, even on warm days. If you see someone in trouble, call 999, encourage them to float, and throw something that floats to help.”

Officials also highlighted prevention advice, including avoiding disposable barbecues in open countryside, not discarding cigarettes or glass, and following local restrictions. The public is also urged to report fire risks immediately and contact police or Crimestoppers if arson is suspected.

Water safety guidance includes the “Phone, Float, Throw” approach promoted by the Crimestoppers Crimestoppers supported safety messaging and the National Water Safety Forum. It advises calling 999, encouraging floating, and throwing flotation aids to anyone in difficulty.

The NFCC also reinforced “Float to Live” guidance, encouraging people who find themselves in trouble in water to tilt their head back, relax, control breathing, and float until help arrives.

Partnership aims to advance fire service leadership and safety

Oklahoma State University and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to drive fire service leadership and safety

Oklahoma State University and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) have signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a strategic partnership focused on strengthening fire service leadership, expanding applied research and improving firefighter safety across the United States.

The agreement brings together Oklahoma State University’s academic expertise in fire and emergency management with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s mission to honor fallen firefighters, support their families and reduce preventable line-of-duty deaths and injuries.

The partnership is designed to strengthen the NFFF Fellowship Program by providing fellows with access to academic mentorship, applied research guidance and faculty support from OSU’s School of Fire, Construction and Emergency Management within the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology.

“This partnership reflects a shared commitment to translating research into practice and ensuring firefighter safety initiatives are grounded in both real-world experience and academic rigor,” said Haley Murphy, associate professor in the School of Fire, Construction and Emergency Management in the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology. “Together, OSU and NFFF are creating new pathways for leadership development, evidence-based learning and professional dialogue across the fire service.”

Under the agreement, fellows will complete applied practicums addressing operational challenges within the fire service, with faculty providing academic oversight to ensure projects meet both professional and scholarly standards. The collaboration may also create opportunities for micro-credentialing and other forms of academic recognition for participants who complete fellowship requirements.

“This collaboration creates a unique space where academia and emerging fire service leaders come together with a focused purpose,” said Daniel T. Kistner, director of fire service programs for the NFFF. “It helps prepare fellows to engage with policymakers, regulators and peers while strengthening the connection between research, education and real-world practice.”

The partnership also reinforces ongoing research collaboration between OSU and the NFFF on firefighter leadership, behaviour and organisational culture.

A key example is the Firefighter Behaviors and Viewpoints Survey, a national research initiative examining firefighter perspectives on training, fireground tactics and safety practices. Findings from the project were recently published in the International Fire Service Journal of Leadership and Management, highlighting how academic and industry partnerships can inform operational decision-making and safety protocols.

Murphy was a principal contributor to the survey design, working with national partners to develop and analyse the data.

“When research is intentionally connected to practitioner needs, it becomes a powerful tool for improving safety and leadership,” Kistner said. “This partnership allows us to expand the impact of the Fellowship and ensure lessons learned are shared broadly across the fire service.”

As part of the collaboration, Fire Protection Publications at OSU may also develop a companion publication to the journal to showcase work from NFFF fellows and selected practicum projects, helping distribute applied research findings to both practitioners and scholars.

Future plans may include joint training initiatives, research symposia and presentation opportunities for fellows to engage with fire service leaders, policymakers and researchers.

Leaders from both organisations said the agreement reflects a shared commitment to improving firefighter leadership, safety and survivability while expanding access to evidence-based learning across the profession.

Educational materials, publications and events developed under the partnership may be co-branded to reflect the shared fire service mission of “Until Everyone Goes Home.”

“Until Everyone Goes Home reflects a commitment to honoring fallen firefighters through the relentless pursuit of reducing preventable line-of-duty deaths,” Kistner said. “Partnerships like this help move that work forward by strengthening leadership and expanding how knowledge is shared across the fire service.”

The memorandum of understanding took effect upon final signature and will remain in place for three years, with an option for renewal.

Lithium-ion battery fires reported in UK every five hours, QBE data shows

Fire and rescue services across the UK are now responding to lithium-ion battery fires approximately once every five hours, according to new research from insurer QBE, highlighting a sharp rise in incidents linked to everyday electronic devices and electric transport.

QBE’s analysis found that UK fire services attended the equivalent of 4.8 lithium-ion battery fires per day in 2025, up from around two per day in 2022. Overall incidents have increased by 147% over the three-year period.

The data, based on Freedom of Information responses from 42 of the UK’s 49 fire services, shows a continued upward trend in fires involving batteries used in devices such as mobile phones, laptops, e-bikes and electric scooters.

QBE said e-bikes accounted for 520 fires in 2025, more than triple the figure recorded in 2022. These incidents represented nearly a third of all lithium-ion battery fires recorded that year. Of the e-bike fires, 44% were attended by the London Fire Brigade, which reported 230 such incidents.

Electric vehicle-related fires also rose, increasing from 120 incidents in 2022 to 279 in 2025, a 133% rise. Over the same period, the number of electric vehicles on UK roads more than tripled, increasing by 206% from 664,148 to 1,971,764.

Key stats behind lithium-ion battery fires in the UK

QBE said almost half (46%) of lithium-ion battery fires occurred in homes, while 31% took place outdoors and 23% in commercial properties. Around 45% of incidents involved commonly used consumer devices such as phones, tablets and power banks.

The insurer attributes many of these incidents to “thermal runaway”, a chemical reaction in which batteries overheat and ignite, often due to damage, overcharging or exposure to heat.

Adrian Simmonds, Risk Manager at QBE Insurance, said:

“Lithium-ion battery fires continue to increase. It’s vital that people and businesses take action to better manage this growing risk. Thermal runaway caused by these types of batteries burns differently, takes much longer to tackle and can require up to 10 times more water to contain.

“Awareness of safe charging, storage and disposal is essential to keeping people and property safe. People should use only certified e-bikes and batteries, charge them away from escape routes and avoid charging items overnight.

“The statistics suggest retrofitted bikes are more prone to these incidents, so we would encourage people to stick to reputable companies when purchasing and avoid unregulated devices.”

Among UK fire services, the London Fire Brigade recorded the highest number of lithium-ion battery fires in 2025 with 522 incidents, followed by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service with 126 and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service with 117.

The data also shows variation across regions, with Bedfordshire and Luton Fire and Rescue Service reporting a year-on-year reduction in incidents following updated safety guidance issued in 2023.

The findings come as the UK prepares to implement reforms under the Product Regulation and Metrology Act, which received royal assent in July and aims to strengthen oversight of product safety, including uncertified e-bikes sold via online marketplaces.

QBE is urging both households and businesses to follow stricter safety measures, including using certified products, avoiding overnight charging, inspecting batteries for damage and ensuring proper storage and disposal of lithium-ion devices.

New safety protocols announced following fatal Wang Fuk Court fire inquiry

Fire safety coordination mechanism launched following public inquiry

TThe Hong Kong Fire Services Department (FSD) will introduce a new system this month to manage building safety complaints following a public inquiry into the fatal Wang Fuk Court blaze.

Michael Yung Kam-hung, an assistant director of the Fire Services Department, told an independent committee that his department lacked the construction expertise to handle complaints about flammable building materials.

Yung said: “We do not know how it would affect the project’s progress if we arbitrarily decide that certain materials cannot be used.”

The witness stated that legal action was not taken during the renovation of the estate because the department could not identify which materials were integral to the project.

Regulatory gaps identified during Wang Fuk Court fire investigation

The committee legal team noted that the disaster involved several human factors including the use of polyfoam boards to seal windows and substandard scaffolding mesh.

Lead counsel Victor Dawes SC argued that a serious regulatory vacuum existed because multiple agencies denied responsibility for supervising temporary structures and flammable materials used during renovations.

While fire officials claimed such items fell outside their remit, the Housing Bureau’s Independent Checking Unit (ICU) also stated it was not responsible for the temporary arrangements.

The FSD confirmed that future referrals contested by other departments will be escalated to senior management for cross-departmental coordination to prevent complaints from being ignored.

Yung accepted that the previous lack of clarity was not ideal and confirmed that the department would no longer expect residents to identify which authority should receive their reports.

Regarding the maintenance of fire water tanks at the site, senior station officer Ng Wing-kwong said internal guidelines did not require officers to verify the severity of reported leaks.

He noted that he could not provide an explanation for why officers were not required to double-check defects before allowing the continued shutdown of fire hosepipes.

Industrial fire was initially contained before deadly vapor explosion

Industrial fire kills two firefighters in Wando

Two firefighters died after a vapor explosion during an industrial fire at a seafood processing facility in Wando County, South Jeolla Province, South Korea, on 12 April.

The Dong-A reported that Senior Fire Sergeant Park Seung-won, 44, of Wando Fire Station and Firefighter Noh Tae-young, 30, of Haenam Fire Station were trapped inside the structure when conditions escalated.

The fire started in a first-floor freezer used for seaweed storage.

A worker was removing epoxy flooring with a torch at the time of ignition.

Fire crews arrived at 08:38 and achieved initial suppression within nine minutes.

The fire then reignited and prompted a second operational phase.

About three minutes into that response, a vapor explosion occurred within the enclosed space.

The explosion caused a rapid spread of flames consistent with flashover conditions.

Both firefighters were unable to exit the structure.

Investigation examines industrial fire conditions and staffing

The Dong-A reported that preliminary findings suggest flammable vapours accumulated inside the sealed warehouse environment and were then ignited by an ignition source.

Authorities referenced a comparable 2020 logistics centre explosion in Icheon that resulted in 38 fatalities.

An investigation is ongoing into compliance with operational and site safety requirements.

The review includes the use of open flame equipment in confined industrial environments.

It is also examining adherence to the two-person work rule during hazardous operations.

The incident has prompted review of staffing levels across local fire stations and deployment practices during high-risk incidents.

It has been reported that Noh was primarily assigned to emergency medical services and had been redeployed to firefighting duties due to staffing shortages.

Park had 19 years of service and is survived by his wife and three children.

Noh was in his fourth year of service and had been preparing for his wedding later this year.

Authorities have indicated that findings from the investigation will inform any required changes to safety procedures and operational protocols.

Three firefighter fatalities have been recorded in the line of duty this year.

Industrial fire breaks out near ADAMA facility in Israel

Fire at southern Israel industrial site

A fire broke out at an industrial area in southern Israel on Sunday after a missile attack, with ADAMA saying its Makhteshim plant was hit either by an Iranian missile or debris from an intercepted missile.

Reuters reported that no injuries were reported and the extent of any damage to the plant was not immediately known.

ADAMA, a maker of active ingredients and crop protection materials, said the site affected was its Makhteshim plant in southern Israel.

The company is part of Chinese-owned Syngenta Group.

Israel’s fire and rescue service said the fire broke out in an industrial area in southern Israel that houses several chemical manufacturing and industrial plants.

It said the cause was likely debris from a missile that was intercepted.

Public warning issued near Ne’ot Hovav

According to Reuters, Israel’s fire and rescue service urged the public to stay away from the Ne’ot Hovav industrial area due to the presence of “hazardous materials” as 34 firefighting crews worked to contain the blaze.

It said there was no danger to the public beyond a distance of 800 meters from the industrial area.

The service said: “Residents in the vicinity are instructed to remain indoors, close windows and ventilation openings, and follow the instructions of security and emergency forces until full control of the incident is achieved.”

Video and images released by the service showed a large ball of fire and heavy black smoke as firefighters worked to prevent the fire from spreading.
