Capita’s Fire Service College (FSC) hosted Guy Martin at its training site in Moreton-in-Marsh for an episode of his four-part Proper Jobs series.

Martin took part in intensive firefighter training, experiencing the physical and technical demands of the role.

He underwent instruction in casualty extraction using heavy rescue tools and performed a rescue from a smoke-filled compartment, demonstrating the critical decision-making involved in fire and rescue operations.

Clair Mowbray, director at the Fire Service College, said: “We were delighted to host Guy Martin at the College.

In filming the action, Guy put the spotlight on the brave and often underappreciated job firefighters do every day to an audience of millions of TV and streaming viewers.”

Martin shared his experience of the training: “The Fire Service College really opened my eyes up. All the students were keen as keen.

“And then even the instructors who’ve been there for years are still saying it’s the best job in the world. Amazing type of person. Yeah, massive respect.”

The FSC recently hosted The Princess Royal, who visited the site to open an AI-powered Immersive Technology Suite.

As reported by Capita’s Fire Service College, the lab integrates artificial intelligence to simulate realistic fire scenarios in a controlled, safe environment.

The College said this approach aims to minimise risks associated with live fire training, such as safety concerns and environmental impact.

Traditional live incident training remains a core element of the College’s curriculum, with the new facility complementing these practices.

IFE collaborates with Fire Service College for National Apprenticeship Week

The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) has joined forces with leading training facility, the Fire Service College, to boost the number of new entrants to the profession during National Apprenticeship Week. In a bid to drive recruitment and encourage young talent, the industry bodies are demonstrating the varied and diverse career opportunities that derive from apprenticeships.

As the global professional membership body for fire engineers, the IFE is dedicated to supporting its members through legislative change and encouraging new talent to join the industry. As a testament to this, the institution recently made its student membership free of charge, providing the new talent pool with access to key resources and online continuing professional development (CPD). Keeping abreast of regulatory changes is vital in order to keep up to date with new ways of working and best practices.

In the early stages of developing an Early Careers Networking Group, the IFE is tapping into their global community to encourage people into the fire sector. This will provide budding fire engineers at the Fire Service College with a platform to share knowledge, raise issues and network.

As part of the apprenticeship pathway, every apprentice must successfully undertake an independent end-point assessment to confirm they have achieved occupational competence and capability.

The IFE recognise the FSC’s end-point assessment as a route to membership and through working cohesively, this enables students to apply for Technician grade membership earning the post-nominals TIFireE.

Dräger, a medical and safety technology company, has partnered with Fire Service College (FSC). Together furthering technical innovation through the optimisation of SCBA product development, firefighter training and communications. 

The FSC, owned by Capita, delivers training to all UK fire and rescue teams, as well as defence, national resilience and critical national infrastructure, and is recognised as an international leader with delegates from across the globe regularly utilising its expertise and facilities. Located on a 320-acre former Royal Air Force airfield, more than 7,000 delegates a year train using every scenario imaginable across domestic and industrial buildings, a ship, aircraft, motorway, train set/station and high-rise buildings – all of which are used for real fire and rescue scenarios on a daily basis.
