Zelim recognised for AI system in British Safety Council awards

Zelim has been named the winner of the British Safety Council’s 2025 Health and Safety Transformation Award for its automatic man overboard detection system.

According to Zelim, its system ZOE was selected from a shortlist of ten international organisations, including Saudi Aramco, Pertamina, and the Universities Safety and Health Association.

The company stated that ZOE is designed for use in maritime, offshore and defence sectors and has been developed using over 7 million maritime images.

ZOE was created with support from the United States Coast Guard and uses machine learning to detect and track people in the water.

The company added that the system can function in poor visibility and high-motion conditions, removing the need for wearables or human confirmation.

Zelim stated that the ZOE system integrates with existing vessel camera and sensor setups.

Once a person is detected, the system activates a series of automated safety responses.

These include location tagging, alert notifications, video logging, and a recovery checklist that supports emergency crews.

The company reported a 96.8 percent probability of detection at a distance of 300 metres.

It also stated that ZOE can differentiate between people, small craft, and marine animals such as seabirds.

ZOE is designed to maintain day and night functionality without manual oversight.

Deployment on vessels across maritime and defence sectors

Zelim reported that the ZOE system has already been deployed on a North Sea jack-up rig and a UK-flagged cruise ship.

It is also scheduled to be installed on a naval frigate.

According to the company, ZOE is being trialled with asset operators, ports, and defence agencies worldwide.

It explained that the technology aims to improve survivability in man overboard events.

The company also noted its additional potential for use in preventing collisions and unauthorised water entries.

British Safety Council outlines purpose of award

The British Safety Council explained that its Health and Safety Transformation Award is given to organisations that have used information in new ways to reduce harm.

It added that the award was sponsored by Croner-i and was part of its wider programme of recognising safety performance across sectors.

The Council stated that ZOE was chosen for the award due to its contribution to operational safety in high-risk environments.

It also noted that the shortlisted entries represented a range of industries and international submissions.

The award has been running annually and recognises changes made in health, safety or wellbeing.

Certification process and Lloyd’s Register approval

Zelim stated that ZOE currently holds Approval in Principle from Lloyd’s Register under ISO 21195.

This standard relates to the performance of man overboard detection systems.

The company added that it expects to complete full type approval in the near future.

It reported that ZOE would become the first system of its kind to hold complete certification under the standard.

The system’s approval process has included trials and third-party assessments to confirm detection capability and operational integration.

Twenty selected for NEBOSH scholarship programme in honour of Michael Adamson

NEBOSH has reported that 20 individuals have been awarded full scholarships for the 2025 Michael Adamson NEBOSH Diploma Scholarship programme.

The scholarship, named in memory of Michael Adamson, who died in a workplace incident, provides funding for the NEBOSH Level 6 National or International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals.

According to NEBOSH, the 2025 selection process received over 1,000 applications.

The organisation stated that the recipients were chosen based on their commitment to improving health and safety standards and their potential to make a positive impact in their communities and workplaces.

NEBOSH explained that this year’s applicants reflected a broad spectrum of motivations, including improving mental health in the workplace and promoting safety legislation within their sectors.

IOSH appoints new Chair and four trustees to its Board

IOSH confirms leadership changes with UK-based Chair appointment

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has announced that Ruth Boumphrey will become Chair of its Board of Trustees on 27 May 2025.

Boumphrey currently serves as Chief Executive of Lloyd’s Register Foundation and brings experience in research, development and regulation.

She will succeed Bobby Chakravarthy, who has acted as interim Chair since Professor Peter Bonfield stepped down in 2024 to take up a UK Government appointment.

Boumphrey holds additional roles as a Non-executive Director of the UK Government’s Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (Cefas) and as a Commissioner for the National Preparedness Commission.

She said: “I’m delighted to be the next Chair of IOSH’s Board of Trustees, and look forward to working with IOSH and its members around the world in delivering its vision of a safe and healthy world of work.

“This vision is very close to my heart and aligns with our mission at Lloyd’s Register Foundation, so I hope to bring and share knowledge, networks and insights that help amplify IOSH’s impact globally.”

IOSH adds four new trustees to Board

Alongside the appointment of Boumphrey as Chair, four new trustees have also joined the IOSH Board.

Arlette Anderson and Sonia Whiteley have been named as member trustees, while David Auger and Stuart Stockley take up positions as independent trustees.

Anderson is a Chartered Fellow of IOSH and the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment. Her previous work has focused on cultural change in multinational organisations. She has served on IOSH’s Performance and Development Committee.

Whiteley, also a Chartered IOSH Fellow, is Vice-Chair of the Essex Branch. She has over 20 years’ experience in occupational safety and health and is currently Head of Health and Safety at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Independent trustees bring business and industry experience

David Auger joins the Board as an independent trustee following a 35-year career in finance.

He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and has held senior roles in manufacturing companies. His previous posts include Chief Finance Officer and Board Advisor to a global shipping group.

Stuart Stockley also joins as an independent trustee. He has over 20 years of experience in senior positions within the building materials industry across the UK and Europe.

His background includes work in commercial, operational, sales and marketing, category management and e-commerce roles.

Board transition marks the end of current trustees’ terms

The announcement also marks the conclusion of terms for three long-serving trustees: Simon Hatson, John Green and David Blower.

IOSH extended its thanks to the departing members, as well as to Bobby Chakravarthy for his service as interim Chair.

Chakravarthy will remain on the Board as an independent trustee once Boumphrey assumes the role of Chair.

NEBOSH to present on leadership and psychological safety in Birmingham

NEBOSH announces presence at Birmingham safety event

NEBOSH has confirmed it will exhibit at the Health and Safety Event 2025, taking place from 8–10 April at the NEC in Birmingham.

As reported by NEBOSH, the organisation will be located at Stand 3/G40, where attendees can speak with its team about available qualifications.

These include courses developed in partnership with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

NEBOSH representatives will also deliver presentations each day as part of the Knowledge Exchange theatre.

Vantify ecosystem launches with £5m investment to support health and safety compliance

Vantify has officially launched in the UK as a new full-service compliance software ecosystem, with more than £5 million invested in the platform.

According to Vantify, the system has been developed by a team of health and safety professionals to help businesses manage workplace risk, statutory compliance, supply chains and certification.

The launch comes in response to an increase in work-related deaths.

The Health and Safety Executive reported that 138 workers were killed in 2023/24, a 12 percent rise on the previous year.

New platform integrates services from William Martin, Elogs and Prosure360

The Vantify platform brings together several brands within The GRC Group, including William Martin, Elogs and Prosure360.

It offers seven services: safety consultancy, risk management software, supply chain management, computer-aided facilities management, contractor network vetting, e-learning, and guidance on legislation and standards.

The launch follows a study by Vantify Risk Manager (formerly Meridian), which analysed 20,000 risk assessments and found that workloads for facilities managers remain high.

NEBOSH and L’Oréal support international women pursuing safety careers

NEBOSH has announced that ten women from across six countries have been selected as recipients of the 2025 NEBOSH–L’Oréal International Bursary.

The bursary provides funding for study and assessment fees for the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

The initiative, now in its third year, is a collaboration between NEBOSH and global cosmetics company L’Oréal.

It attracted over 1000 applications from women aiming to advance their careers in occupational health and safety.

Health and Safety Executive celebrates 50 years of workplace safety in Great Britain

The Health and Safety Executive’s 50-year journey

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the national regulator for health and safety in Great Britain, marked its 50th anniversary on 1 January 2025.

Established by the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, HSE officially launched on 1 January 1975.

Over the past five decades, it has contributed to reducing workplace fatalities and injuries, positioning Great Britain as one of the safest places to work.

According to HSE’s latest statistics, workplace deaths have decreased from 651 in 1974 to 138 in 2023/24.

Current mission and challenges

HSE’s Chief Executive, Sarah Albon, highlighted the ongoing relevance of the organisation’s mission despite changes in workplace practices over the years.

Sarah said: “We’re proud of our successes over the last five decades, but the fact remains that any work-related death is a tragedy, and there are still far too many workers suffering ill-health brought about by work activity.”

In 2022, HSE introduced its 10-year strategy, Protecting People and Places, which aims to tackle emerging challenges and extend its responsibilities.

Evolving responsibilities of HSE

The scope of HSE’s work has expanded beyond worker safety to include public safety and regulatory roles.

Recent duties include acting as the Building Safety Regulator and managing chemical regulations following Brexit.

Sarah noted: “It is hard to foresee what the world of work will look like in the next 50 years but as ever, our fundamental principle will continue to be to make sure that those who create risk, take responsibility for controlling risk.”

Asbestos awareness for emergency responders

With over 20 years in asbestos health, Samantha Collins, Principal Examiner (Asbestos), British Occupational Hygiene Society, discusses the unseen risks firefighting personnel face in asbestos exposure

I consider myself very lucky to have no real experience of the fire sector.

I have of course always been aware of the dangers firefighting personnel must face.

As an occupational hygienist with some health and safety experience, I can probably recognise some of the slightly less obvious issues such as smoke and soot inhalation, exposure to extreme temperatures and the risks of working in high-stress environments.

What I am ashamed to say, however, is that despite having worked within the asbestos industry for 20-plus years, asbestos exposure to firefighting personnel has never been at the forefront of my mind, possibly due to several reasons.

The first is that the ‘immediate risks’ to firefighter’s health and safety were always the ones I thought of first.

The second is that I always imagined the PPE, RPE and decontamination procedures within the emergency services to be of such a high standard that exposure to various ‘nasties’ would be almost non-existent, and finally, as an industry with the HSE as our regulator, we are primarily focussed on the exposure risk in ‘tradespeople’ and members of the public more so than emergency responders.

Recent press releases and campaigns, news articles and reports have all predominantly centred around the risk of asbestos in schools, hospitals and government buildings and there are more training courses marketed for electricians, plumbers, property maintenance workers etc than you can shake a stick at.

But what is this ‘asbestos’ and could we be doing more about it for the fire industry?

Understanding the risks

Asbestos, from a Greek word meaning “inextinguishable” is the name given to a group of ‘naturally occurring fibrous silicate minerals’ formed over time throughout the Earth’s crust.

The mineralogy of asbestos formation is somewhat complex and requires quite specific circumstances influenced by local geology and environmental conditions.

Asbestos was first reportedly discovered by the ancient Greeks and Romans and appears in early texts written by the Greek geographer and philosopher Strabo (64/63 BC – 24 AD) and the Roman naturalist ‘Pliny the Elder’ (AD 23/24 – AD 79).

Following its initial discovery, we quickly recognised the ‘magic’ properties of these asbestos minerals, notably their high resistance to fire and excessive heat, and its historical use has been found in many countries around the world used to strengthen clay cooking pots, form lamp and candle wicks, woven into fireproof tablecloths and interestingly even cremation blankets because the blanket itself didn’t burn and could contain the deceased’s ashes for easy separation from the rest of the funeral pyre.

Closer to home during the Industrial Revolution, the expansion of Britain’s global trading empire and the threat of a second World War, the use of asbestos in the UK became more widespread, particularly in the aftermath of WWII when several political changes resulted in increased demand for schools, hospitals and government buildings, and a general desire of the country to get back on its’ feet.

Cheap and readily available

There are reportedly more than 200 different types of asbestos mineral globally, however, due to various reasons, including how abundant they were and how commercially viable they were to extract, only 6 types tend to be ‘regulated’ in the UK.

These are Chrysotile, Crocidolite, Amosite (more often known by their colours as white, blue and brown respectively) and the slightly rarer types of Fibrous Anthophyllite, Tremolite and Actinolite.

The concept of new construction and engineering materials which were strong, cheap, readily available and more importantly said to ‘save lives’ through fire protection, meant demand and importation of asbestos fibre and the production of asbestos containing materials (ACMs) skyrocketed.

ACMs quickly found their way into various installations around the country with the number of imports increasing steadily from the late 1930s, peaking in the 1970s and only finally reducing throughout the 80s and 90s when awareness of the health risks associated with asbestos exposure began to expand until asbestos was finally banned in the UK in 1999.

It’s estimated that during the 20th Century over 6 million tonnes of asbestos were imported into the UK, mostly as ‘raw fibre’ direct from the mines of countries such as South Africa, Canada, Russia, Cyprus and Australia.

Often arriving by sea and distributed countrywide by road and rail, UK factories and processing plants produced a variety of different ACMs.

There are thought to be approximately 3600 different types of ACMs in the UK.

We have thermal insulation, fireproofing, firebreaks and ‘compartmentalisation’ materials, ‘sprayed coatings’, friction products such as clutch linings and brake pads, roofs and rainwater goods moulded from asbestos-containing cement, ‘Artex’ ceilings, floor tiles, toilet cisterns and even full woven asbestos firefighting suits at one point in time – the list goes on.

The ancient Greeks and Romans may have had conflicting ideas of what asbestos was and where it came from.

They were however in agreement that asbestos caused illness in human beings noting that workers involved in extracting the fibres from the ground or weaving them into cloths and ropes often developed ‘lung sickness’ and had short life expectancies.

Unfortunately, as advancements were made in medicine it became undeniable that asbestos exposure was a serious health concern.

Due to the unique fibrous shape of the minerals, the microscopic size of the fibres, their ability to become easily airborne when agitated, and their resistance to heat, acids and alkalis, once they enter the human body (usually via the respiratory system) they can remain in situ for decades without being broken down or removed by our body’s defences.

This can cause devastating damage including diseases and conditions such as lung cancer, asbestosis, pleural plaques, pleural effusions (lung fluid accumulation), pericardial effusions (build-up of fluid around the heart) and even laryngeal and ovarian cancers.

There is also the infamous ‘mesothelioma’ whereby inhaled fibres can migrate through the lung tissue, penetrate the lung wall and lodge themselves in the pleural lining on the outside of the lungs where they can trigger the growth of aggressive cancerous tumours.

Health impact of asbestos exposure

The frightening thing is that the effects of asbestos exposure and inhalation are not immediate; there is a ‘latency’ period of anything between 15 and 60 years depending on the source of the information and asbestos is now firmly recognised by the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) as a Group 1 Human Carcinogen.

The current stance of the regulators in the UK is that if ACMs are not disturbed and the risk of any fibres being released and becoming airborne is mitigated, then ACMs should stay in place and be ‘managed’.

They are often still doing an important job of thermally insulating or fire-proofing structures and their removal could compromise structural integrity and/or cause unnecessary exposure to removal workers and the public.

There are issues with removal costs; who is liable for these costs, and what we should do with waste asbestos.

Currently, it’s buried at specialist landfill sites but many of these sites are now ‘full’ and ideas on dealing with asbestos waste in the future are limited.

Under the current Control of Asbestos Regulations (2012) Duty Holders are legally obliged to survey their properties for ACMs, keep a register of what and where they are and have a management plan to monitor condition and mitigate exposure.

In addition, we have legal training requirements stating anyone liable to disturb the ‘fabric’ of a building during their work must have a minimum of ‘asbestos awareness’ training to educate them in what different ACMs can look like, their different applications and how to avoid exposure.

There are also tight restrictions on knowingly working with asbestos including minimum RPE and PPE requirements, control measures to reduce fibre levels if disturbed and the all-important site and personnel decontamination.

Limitations of current safety protocols

Whether this system is working however is hotly debated both by industry leaders and politicians, with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) Select Committee raising its concerns with the Government in 2021 about the usefulness of the regulations for managing asbestos, prompting a review on ‘effectiveness’ by the HSE.

The reason is that despite the legal requirements in place we still have more than 5000 people dying each year in the UK from asbestos-related disease.

So even with the regulations in place and a duty to Manage which has been in effect since 2004, we are still seeing many annual deaths, and this is mostly with our focus on managing asbestos in a controlled way within buildings which are intact or undergoing planned demolition.

Registers should be in place for contractors to reference before starting work; tradespeople are taught not to conduct any work without the correct information and we usually have the small luxury of time for planning and acting when it comes to ACMs in the form of training, data retrieval, method statements and risk assessments.

However, what do we do about emergencies, explosions, unplanned structural collapse, fire and dare I say terrorist attacks?

Of course, these are situations where something has the potential to end a life immediately which understandably takes precedence over some strange ‘fibrous rock’, exposure to which may or may not cause harm in the next 30 years, but should we be doing more when it comes to safeguarding firefighting personnel from this so-called ‘Magic Mineral’?

HSE reveals UK workplace injury and ill health data for 2023/24

Work-related ill health statistics from HSE

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released its annual report detailing workplace injury and ill health statistics for 2023/24.

According to the report, 1.7 million workers experienced work-related ill health during this period.

This figure is similar to the 1.8 million reported in 2022/23.

Half of these cases were attributed to stress, depression, or anxiety, totalling approximately 776,000 cases.

The report noted a decline in work-related stress, depression, or anxiety cases from 910,000 in 2022/23.

However, the current rate remains higher than pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2018/19.

Economic and productivity impact

Workplace injuries and ill health caused substantial productivity losses in 2023/24.

An estimated 33.7 million working days were lost due to self-reported work-related injuries or illnesses.

The HSE report highlighted the broader economic implications, noting that workplace injuries and new cases of ill health cost the economy £21.6 billion in 2022/23.

This represents a decrease of £1.6 billion compared to the previous year.

Workplace injuries and fatalities

The statistics also cover work-related injuries and fatalities in 2023/24.

During this period, 138 workers were fatally injured in workplace accidents.

Additionally, 604,000 workers reported non-fatal injuries sustained at work.

HSE’s chief executive Sarah Albon reflected on the progress made in workplace safety: “This year marks 50 years since the legislation which established HSE was passed.

Much has been achieved in that time, including a dramatic reduction of around 85 per cent in the numbers of employee fatal injuries in the workplace.”

The HSE emphasised the importance of maintaining progress while addressing ongoing challenges.

Albon added: “Today, Great Britain is one of the safest places in the world to work but these statistics serve as a reminder that there is still room for further improvement, and we remain committed to ensuring people remain safe and healthy wherever work is taking place.”

The report demonstrates the HSE’s ongoing focus on improving health and safety outcomes across Britain’s workplaces.
