Kentec has announced that its Sigma ZXT control panel has achieved an Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listing to the UL 864 10th edition standard, allowing the platform to support compliant fire detection and suppression systems in global markets.

Kentec said the listing applies to a panel designed for early-warning fire detection and suppression systems across the Americas, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

The Sigma ZXT builds on the company’s Sigma A-XT range with additional features and compliance with the latest standards.

It can be configured with dual extinguishing outputs to support main and reserve cylinders, helping reduce downtime after a release.

A dynamic LCD display provides real-time system status using green, red, blue and amber indication for conditions including fire, faults and releasing stages.

The panel can also store 1,000 event logs in a downloadable record for diagnostics and investigation.

Technical details of the Sigma ZXT

Kentec said the panel is suited to high-risk applications including battery energy storage systems (BESS), where conditions that could lead to thermal runaway and fire need to be identified quickly.

Three initiating device circuits can be configured for coincidence activation so extinguishant release only occurs after confirmation of a fire event.

Three notification appliance circuits support horns, strobes and horn strobe devices from multiple suppliers, with patterns that indicate different stages of extinguishant release.

Six programmable volt-free relay outputs and two programmable inputs allow site-specific function control.

Remote indication and control can be provided through Sigma ZSi Status Units, with up to seven units connected on a monitored RS485 Data Bus.

Additional fixed-function relay outputs can be added through up to seven Sigma ZXT UL Ancillary Boards.

Kentec announces wireless lockdown notification system for UK public venues

Kentec has announced a Wireless Lockdown Notification System, described as a solution for UK public venues preparing for Martyn’s Law requirements.

Martyn’s Law is also known as the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025.

The legislation received Royal Assent on 3 April 2025.

Compliance is mandated by April 2027.

The requirements described include venues assessing capacity and implementing risk assessments, security plans and procedures for responding to terrorist incidents, including evacuation.

The rules are expected to be enforced by a new regulatory function within the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

Kentec stated that fines could reach up to £18 million, with the potential for criminal conviction also referenced.

Wireless lockdown system features and integration claims

Kentec said the system applies its K-Mesh life-safety reliability to a dedicated lockdown solution.

Activation is described as being controlled via a simple switch to send notifications throughout a building or site.

Kentec stated the system includes pre-recorded spoken messages, with options listed as lockdown, covert alert, all clear, or evacuation, and that only one message is broadcast at a time.

Sound output is described as up to 91dB(A) at 1m.

Kentec described a lockdown indicator panel with integrated LEDs, providing visual status, incident confirmation and fault logging.

The system is described as using a self-healing mesh network, with devices connecting to the strongest available signal path.

Device battery life is described as up to 10 years.

Kentec said the system can be configured and commissioned using K-Mesh software with off-site pre-programming, and that minimal cabling is required during installation.

Kentec hydrogen detector launched for BESS fire safety

New gas detector enhances BESS fire detection

Kentec Electronics has released a new flammable gas detector, K-Detect-iON, designed to provide early hydrogen detection for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) fire protection.

According to Kentec Electronics, the detector operates without calibration for at least ten years.

The company stated that the K-Detect-iON integrates directly with its Sigma ZXT extinguishing panels and provides live monitoring of hydrogen gas levels in remote energy storage environments.

Kentec said the detector is intended to detect hydrogen gas at the earliest stage of battery malfunction, helping reduce the risk of fire by triggering ventilation and suppression systems.

The company added that this early-stage monitoring is particularly relevant given the typical progression of BESS fire events from cell failure to gas release and ignition.

System compatibility and certification details

Kentec Electronics stated that K-Detect-iON is designed to function consistently across both EN and UL regulatory environments.

The company reported that the Sigma ZXT (EN) version complies with EN54 Part 2, EN54 Part 4 and EN12094 Part 1.

It also confirmed that the Sigma ZXT (UL) version is pending certification to UL 864 (10th Edition), FM Standards and NFPA 855.

According to Kentec, this multi-standard compatibility means the same core technology can be used across international installations without modification.

The integration of K-Detect-iON into the Sigma ZXT platform allows users to configure site-specific responses to hydrogen detection events.

Detector performance and environmental resilience

Kentec stated that the K-Detect-iON covers a 0–100% Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) range for hydrogen gas.

The detector is designed to identify hydrogen release at early stages, well before critical levels are reached.

It also supports a wide operating temperature range from -30°C to 75°C, with a tolerance of ±0.48°C.

The company said this performance helps minimise false alarms in challenging site conditions.

Kentec also noted that the unit is designed to respond rapidly to gas presence, allowing preventative action before ignition risk escalates.

System automation and suppression integration

When used with the Sigma ZXT panel, Kentec stated that K-Detect-iON can activate extraction vents in energy storage units.

This action removes hydrogen from the system and reduces the possibility of ignition.

Kentec explained that depending on how the system is configured, the detector can also trigger fire suppression sequences automatically.

This integrated functionality is intended to streamline the entire gas detection and response process within a single platform.

The company highlighted that early detection and automatic control are especially important for remote BESS sites where manual intervention may be delayed.

Kentec announces its ‘one-stop shop’ K-System fire detection solution

Kentec Electronics, a manufacturer of innovative life safety solutions, has announced the K-System, wired addressable fire detection

Drawing on Kentec’s panel expertise which features an open protocol, K-System compliments Kentec’s proven wireless range, K-Mesh, making Kentec a ‘one-stop’ solution for wired and wireless addressable fire detection in both EN and UL standards.

The K-System was created in response to the global market and specifiers requiring a single-branded system, whilst continuing its ethos of open protocol and supporting its community of technology partners. Solely available through Kentec Installation Partners (KIPs) and those on the Kentec Authorised Distributors Plus (KAD+) Programme, the K-System is backed by Kentec’s reputation for high quality, excellent technical support and comprehensive product training.

Features of the K-System

K-System includes a range of high performance intelligent detection devices, Manual Call Points, sounders, VADs (Visual Alarm Devices), interface modules and an assortment of ancillaries. The range also includes a highly sophisticated CO multi-sensor with 24 EN approved modes of operation. K-System’s detection device

Each K-System detection device has a unique type of code which enables the fire alarm control panel to identify what type of device has activated, this means users can tell whether an alarm has been generated from a smoke or heat sensor, a combination sensor or a manual call point, and an appropriate response is therefore ensured. An Interrupt System guarantees rapid responses from any device, and the time lapse between operation of a call point and indication of fire on the system is typically less than 1.5 seconds.

K-System devices are electronically addressed using a special programming tool, restricting this operation to trained engineers only. Up to 254 loop addresses are supported on K-System devices with addresses 1-127 allocated to detection devices, Manual Call Points, interfaces etc. and addresses 128-254 allocated to base sounder/sounder beacon devices.

In addition, K-System interface modules support sub-addressing where each input and output provided on an interface module are automatically allocated a sub-address of the main loop address. This allows independent monitoring, control, cause and effect programming for inputs and outputs. Sounder beacon devices also use sub-addressing to enable individual control of the sounder element and beacon element of the device.

Fire safety system implementation

The fire safety system installed across the plant includes 12 SIGMA ZXT units, manufactured by Kentec, a provider of fire safety control systems.

These units have been placed in key high-risk areas, such as electrical warehouses and storage zones.

The SIGMA ZXT units are designed to enable rapid response to fire outbreaks by delivering targeted extinguishing.

By allowing the system to extinguish fires only in specific zones, it helps reduce the risk of damage and keeps costs lower.

The system can be configured to release the extinguishant on an alarm triggered from one or more zones, offering flexibility in fire response and minimizing risk in areas with highly combustible materials.

Security features and integration

The SIGMA ZXT units come equipped with four configurable user passwords that provide restricted access, allowing only authorised personnel to access and modify the system.

This ensures that access to the fire safety system is controlled, and any changes made are tracked.

In addition, secure event logging records up to 1,000 events, which can be used for post-event investigations.

This feature offers valuable insights for safety assessments and enhances the overall security at the plant.

Integration with wider safety systems

One of the standout features of the new system is its seamless integration with the broader security infrastructure at Sharrcem.

According to Kentec, Professional Alarm, a security systems installer, played a key role in implementing the fire safety solution.

Kentec Electronics appoints Mike Estall as senior specification development manager

Mike Estall joins Kentec Electronics

Kentec Electronics, a manufacturer of life safety solutions, has appointed Mike Estall as Senior Specification Development Manager, as reported by Kentec.

Mike Estall has over 25 years of experience in building solutions, fire systems, and integration with other building platforms.

He will be sharing his knowledge through a series of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses for Kentec customers and partners.

The first session will be delivered at the NAHFO conference in June.

Extensive industry experience

Prior to joining Kentec, Estall worked as the Director of Fire Engineering at the TenBroeke Engineering Company and Specification Development Director at BBC Fire — Marlow Fire & Security.

His extensive experience includes designing fire alarm and safety systems, developing detailed site surveys, writing comprehensive specifications in line with UK standards, and conducting fire risk assessments.

He is also a member of the Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) and the Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM).
