MSA to supply SCBA units to Orange County Fire Authority in $10m deal

Breathing apparatus contract awarded to MSA for Southern California fire agency

MSA Safety has announced it will supply respiratory protective equipment to the Orange County Fire Authority under a contract valued at $10 million.

According to MSA Safety, the contract will support the fire department’s transition to updated self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) units, selected following a review of available technologies.

The company stated that the G1 SCBA was chosen based on its digital features and modular design that allows future upgrades.

G1 SCBA chosen for connectivity and upgrade potential

MSA Safety reported that the Orange County Fire Authority selected its G1 SCBA system after a detailed evaluation process.

The organisation noted that factors influencing the decision included the SCBA’s embedded connectivity, its compatibility with the FireGrid software platform, and the ability to add new features over time.

MSA Safety said that the FireGrid system allows incident commanders to access live data such as air pressure, battery status and alarm notifications to support personnel oversight during operations.

G1 SCBA includes embedded thermal imaging for individual firefighters

The manufacturer explained that the G1 SCBA includes an integrated thermal imaging camera (iTIC), providing firefighters with direct access to visual information during incidents.

It added that the iTIC is part of the SCBA’s control module and includes a built-in video screen and other electronic components that support its operation.

According to the company, this feature allows each firefighter to use thermal imaging tools individually rather than relying on shared handheld devices.

MSA aims to build presence across Southern California

MSA Safety stated that this agreement further extends its supply of SCBA equipment in Southern California, following contracts with the Los Angeles County and Los Angeles City Fire Departments over the past two years.

Bob Apel, MSA Safety Executive Director, Global Fire Service and Digital Experience, said: “When it comes to protecting first responders, our vision at MSA Safety is to provide fire departments with the most advanced and versatile safety solutions available today.

“Our G1 breathing apparatus is a fitting example of that vision.

“The platform provides ongoing value to fire departments because it enables us to continuously add new technologies to the SCBA that enhance firefighter health and safety.

“That vision is consistent with our growth strategy to be the leading innovator in head-to-toe protection for the fire service.”

Joann Serakowski, MSA Safety Vice President, Fire Service – U.S. and Canada, said: “We are incredibly proud to establish this new partnership with the Orange County Fire Authority.

“Most importantly, we’re honoured the department has entrusted MSA with the responsibility of protecting the men and women who help keep the residents of Orange County safe each day.”

Driving digital compliance on the fireground with MSA Safety’s connected solutions

Danny Stranks, Connected Services and Solutions Sales Manager for MSA Safety, EMEA, explains how connected solutions optimise compliance and improve safety protocols across industries globally

Can you explain what digital compliance is and why it is beneficial for enhancing worker safety?

When we look at people not familiar with digital compliance, we need to take a step back and understand how conventional compliance is managed in safety.

I’ve spoken to customers across Europe, the Middle East and Africa and it’s managed in various ways—it could still be Excel spreadsheets or paper filing and both are very time-consuming and can be manipulated if it wasn’t right the first time.

Digital compliance is simple.

By integrating connectivity directly into a product, you can seamlessly automate the process, providing actionable data that helps safety managers create safer and more efficient worksites and you completely take that human element out of it.

Most importantly, by automating the process, you essentially gain a digital employee.

That can save a lot of time and energy that you would be spending to manage it manually, so you can focus on other areas of safety that are important.

Compliance is important, but it can be a very time-costly exercise.

Digital compliance streamlines that process.

How do connected solutions make compliance easier?

When you look at compliance, the core remains the same: Is the equipment ready to use? Do you have a reliable audit trail before and after the equipment has been used? And that’s really important.

When we look at audit trails of equipment, how do you go backwards to check over time if it was ready?

By adopting the connected solution, regardless of the industry, you can capture and manage that data in one place to build better safety protocols and better optimise the deployment of your assets in the field.

By capturing that data, we can address training opportunities and remove complacency in usage.

How can you reassure companies intimidated by data about its benefits for safety?

We’re living in an age where data is still new to some people and how we use data can sometimes be a source of concern.

I remind people that data is unemotional.

For example, if three people see an incident and we saw it from three different angles, we’re going to write about it all differently when we put it down.

If you had a friend involved in the incident, it is possible you will write about it completely differently compared to someone else because you’re emotionally attached to that person.

Data is unemotional.

It’s only going to give us the hard facts that we can then have actionable insight into.

Data can objectively tell us what happened, at what time and what the environment around it was.

It provides actionable data to then see improvements, whether that’s in safety improvements or training opportunities.

So that’s what I mean by unemotional and that data is a really powerful tool when used right.

People shouldn’t be intimidated because it’s collating that data that we should be collating without any other bits of being involved in that environment.

How does a data-driven approach change traditional methods for addressing workplace safety?

I have two words: accountability and visibility.

By adopting a data-driven approach, data provides visibility of what is happening within your organisation at any time.

Managing various machines, especially at satellite sites, can be difficult.

Using data, we can manage fleet optimisation, compliance, service and maintenance and equipment utilisation and usage.

This is important because companies provide equipment, but we don’t know if they always use it.

With data, we can generate usage reports and utilisation, which drive data adoption across the region.

Accountability is also crucial.

When someone is accountable for equipment and data is collected, it changes work cultures as they know something is being monitored.

Visibility of data and accountability allows us to act.

How are MSA’s connected solutions adapted across industries?

When MSA develops products or technology, the customer is always our priority to ensure robust, reliable products that users can trust.

Trust is crucial for safety-critical equipment.

Our connected solutions can be leveraged in various ways across industries.

For large refineries with hundreds of workers, they can use worker location alarm notifications.

In heavy industry, workers use our Grid ID RFID tag system to ensure fleet optimisation.

When workers tag in, it checks compliance, runs compliance reports and ensures bump tests or calibrations are performed.

This is powerful.

For example, one customer saved 200 devices per year by using tag in/tag out, avoiding device wastage and reducing costs.

What role will connected safety solutions play in future compliance and safety standards?

As connectivity becomes more common, standards for its use and collection will become integral to workplace compliance.

In large parts of Europe, gas exposure must be tracked to protect workers and companies.

Connected solutions will help ensure that exposure levels are recorded accurately, which will be referenced in future claims.

This integration is already happening in Europe and parts of the US.

What is the next phase for connected safety solutions at MSA and the industry?

The next phase involves offering a complete solution and working with our customers to identify their needs.

I meet customers who may be reserved about adopting connected solutions, but they often provide great ideas for improvements.

A significant part of the next phase is responding to these customer requests as connectivity becomes more integral to compliance.

We are developing a complete portfolio of products and integrating them into unified solutions, which is essential as we move forward.

New leader, expanded campus: Inside MSA Bristol

Jo Garner, General Manager at MSA Bristol, shares her vision on providing comprehensive safety solutions and the impact of recent upgrades on customer service

Could you start by sharing a bit about your background and what led to your role at MSA Bristol?

My career with MSA began in January 2020 and it’s been a truly fantastic journey.

I’m extremely proud to work for a company where the mission and core values are at the heart of everything we do.

Regardless of the branch of MSA you’re working in, the mission to help men and women return home safely at the end of the day is truly lived and breathed.

I began my career managing the MSA Latchways site in Devizes, UK, focusing on fall protection systems.

In July 2023, as part of the Bristol integration and my development, I spent four months at the MSA Bristol uniform service centre in Rainham, Essex.

As Business Support Leader, I supported the team’s integration into the MSA family, marking my first exposure to the firefighting industry.

In November 2023, I became Plant Manager in Berlin, overseeing breathing apparatus manufacturing, including the M1 SCBA, gaining valuable experience in the fire and mining industries.

In September, I returned to the UK as General Manager at Bristol, leading operations in Yate, Rainham, and Livingston.

What is your vision and your priorities for MSA Bristol going forward?

My vision is centred on positioning MSA Bristol as a leader in premium safety solutions while providing superior customer service.

Specifically for the fire service, this means demonstrating to our customers throughout the UK and beyond the benefits of being a one-stop shop for their fire protective needs.

As both the manufacturer and service provider, we offer comprehensive solutions to cover a variety of their needs.

One of the key advantages of MSA Bristol is that we don’t just design and manufacture fire protective clothing; we also work closely with our customers to ensure their teams are fully equipped.

This is where our fully managed service can make a significant difference.

By offering an end-to-end solution – including washing, drying, repairing and replacement of garments across all three of our MSA Bristol facilities – we can provide a seamless experience that supports our customers’ operational needs.

We always strive to meet our customers’ requirements with a focus on delivering an exceptional experience.

I intend for our teams to continue sharing the benefits of our fully managed service with our customer base not only in the UK but also globally.

By emphasising quality, reliability and customer care, we aim to strengthen our partnerships and support our customers in the important work they do.

How do the recent upgrades at the Bristol campus align with your goals for MSA Bristol?

The recent upgrades at the Bristol campus, particularly the implementation of RFID-enabled processes, align closely with our goals at MSA Bristol.

These enhancements mean we’re better equipped to support our customers by helping to ensure that brigades have the right gear at the right time for their firefighters.

With our system, we’re able to track the location of any garment throughout the servicing process.

The best way to describe our new railing system is like a giant laundrette—it’s quite something to see.

This advanced setup allows us to efficiently handle a high volume of garments while maintaining quality and accountability.

Currently, MSA Bristol operates three service centres across the UK, serving 23 managed service customers with 113 employees.

We care for 50,000 firefighters in the UK, washing approximately 361,000 garments and repairing 71,000 items every year.

As an industry leader, we’re always looking for ways to enhance our operations.

These upgrades enable us to improve the products we offer and how we care for our customers’ garments throughout the cleaning process.

By investing in these advancements, we’re better positioned to meet our customers’ needs and support them in their critical work.

In what ways do you see these facility investments enhancing the services provided to customers?

These facility investments enhance the services we provide to customers by allowing us to continue fulfilling our company mission of helping to keep people safe at work.

With the upgraded facilities, we’re better able to scale up and respond to large incidents as we have the capacity to handle unique situations that may arise.

This means we can support our customers more effectively, especially during times of increased demand.

Another benefit of performing everything in-house is that we have detailed PPE and garment insights and traceability throughout the process.

This transparency allows us to manage the process more efficiently and ensure that garments are returned to customers promptly.

Despite the new equipment and processes, we maintain the same high standards, using specific wash programmes for certain types of contaminants across all three of our service centres.

When inspecting garments, we have approximately 17 checkpoints, covering the fabric layers, reflective tape, pockets, trims and fastenings on the garment.

This thorough inspection process helps to ensure that every item meets our quality standards before it is returned to the customer.

By combining advanced technology with careful attention to detail, we’re able to enhance the services we provide and better support our customers’ needs.

How has your team responded to the leadership transition and the service centre upgrade?

The team has responded really well to both.

They’ve been very welcoming and it’s been great to see how they’ve embraced the changes.

We have a strong team here in Bristol and they understand the importance of their work in helping to keep firefighters safe.

As an organisation driven by our mission, we’re all aligned and motivated around that singular goal.

The team is committed to bringing that mission to life through new ideas and dedication to quality.

They take their responsibilities seriously, knowing that their work has a direct impact on the safety of our customers.

Having our operations together on one campus at the new facility in Bristol gives us a greater opportunity to make a significant impact for our customers.

It’s something that our employees are deeply committed to.

They’re enthusiastic about the advancements and are actively contributing to the continued success of MSA Bristol.

What additional developments or upgrades are coming for MSA Bristol?

One is our brand new design studio.

Having expanded areas for the fire protective clothing team really enhances how we work together.

With the design space, dressing rooms and garment stations all in one location, it looks fantastic and creates a more cohesive environment.

This setup makes it easier to have conversations with customers about their fire protective clothing needs.

They can see firsthand how closely we work together as a team, both as a manufacturer and service provider.

It provides transparency and allows us to engage more effectively with our customers, ensuring we meet their specific requirements.

We’ll always look for ways to make improvements and ensure that our operations are running smoothly.

Is there anything you would you like share about the direction MSA Bristol is taking under your leadership?

I’m proud to say that we’ll continue providing the high-quality service that our customers expect from MSA Safety.

We understand that trust is incredibly important in our industry.

Our customers rely on us to provide solutions that help to keep them safe and enhance their productivity.

Under my leadership, MSA Bristol will remain committed to upholding these standards.

We’ll focus on delivering value to our customers by offering reliable products and services that meet their needs.

Our aim is to be a partner they can depend on, supporting them in their important work.

Leadership, legacy and lifesaving tools: Nish Vartanian highlights MSA Safety’s tech-driven firefighting solutions

By Nish Vartanian, Non-Executive Chairman, MSA Safety’s Board of Directors

For my entire 39-year career, I’m proud to say I worked at MSA Safety, a company that’s mission is to help keep people safe at work.

While I retired earlier this year as President and CEO, I continue serving as the company’s non-executive Chairman, and remain connected – and committed – to the MSA mission.

The same passion I have for the mission continues today with the new MSA leadership team, as they carry on this same mission that started 110 years ago.

Part of fulfilling this mission includes helping to keep firefighters safe when they’re on the job and answering calls for help.

During my career, I witnessed many changes in the fire service, from how fire protective equipment was designed, manufactured, and utilised by firefighters, to how new technologies were developed and revolutionised firefighting.

The fire service has come a long way, but the one thing that I never saw change was the strength of and respect for the traditions of the fire service.

Currently, the fire service faces many challenges, as the market and environment are constantly evolving.

New construction materials and the way firefighters tackle automobile fires, especially with the rise of electric vehicles, are examples of these changes.

There’s a growing need for solutions related to incident command, remote monitoring, and asset management, and these are areas where technology is improving.

We’re also seeing the emergence of data and its importance for training and education, how it can help fire departments make quicker, safer decisions on the fire scene, and even help manage firefighter health and wellbeing.

As we look to the future of firefighting, I believe the focus will be on the user experience and how new innovations in technology can provide data and insights without being obtrusive or add complexity.

It’s showing the impact of leveraging data effectively and integrating it into existing tools, but also means developing intuitive technology tools that are not burdensome to firefighters and can be adopted across various scenarios and departments.

It will remain important to honor the traditions of the fire service, but it will be more important not to let those be a hinderance to innovation and advancing technology.

Ultimately, no matter where in the world firefighters are doing their jobs, in a large city or a small town, prioritising their safety through innovative solutions that are developed and tailored to their needs will be key to advancing the fire service in the years to come.
