Survitec has reported the successful completion of performance testing for new alcohol-resistant, fluorine-free firefighting foam concentrates.

The company confirmed that the results demonstrate compatibility with marine foam proportioning and pump systems, supporting the global transition away from PFAS-based products ahead of incoming IMO regulations.

According to Survitec, testing was required to confirm that the denser, more viscous foam formulations can operate effectively within systems originally designed for lower-viscosity compounds.

The manufacturer stated that this process involved modifications to existing dosing and pumping components, rather than full equipment replacement.

Testing confirms performance with high-viscosity foams

Survitec explained that the latest round of trials builds on previous laboratory tests examining foam performance under various marine conditions.

Last year, Survitec conducted fire tests using different sprinkler nozzles and fuel types.

These earlier tests showed that the foam retained its stability and effectiveness, even with volatile substances like methanol.

However, as Survitec noted, the alcohol-resistant variant introduced new challenges due to its increased viscosity. Standard systems were not designed for such properties, creating dosing accuracy risks.

Maciej Niescioruk, Product Manager, Foam Systems at Survitec, said: “Standard proportioners are not typically designed to handle this kind of fluid.

“So it was essential that we rigorously test the system to ensure compatibility and dosing accuracy.”

Adjustments reduce dosing risk in existing systems

Niescioruk explained that proportioning accuracy is a key requirement under marine fire safety standards.

He said: “An incorrect dosing ratio can result in a foam that is ineffective in suppressing a fire.

“Foam proportioning systems must comply with a strict dosing accuracy range of -0% to +30% to ensure that underdosing does not occur.

“This is a critical requirement to avoid system failure.”

He added: “This is particularly important when using high-viscosity foam concentrates, which typically generate higher flow resistance.

“If a standard, unchanged, proportioner is used, the increased resistance can cause the actual mixing ratio to fall below the nominal value, violating regulatory requirements and compromising foam performance.

“By implementing our findings from these tests, we can ensure that our customers won’t face that risk.”

Survitec reported that the extent of system redesign varied depending on configuration and scale. In some cases, changes to internal components and orifices were enough to meet the required dosing precision.

Regulatory compliance drives fluorine-free transition

The tests were carried out ahead of new International Maritime Organization (IMO) rules coming into force in January 2026.

Survitec stated that under IMO MSC.532(107), the use and storage of foams containing PerFluoroOctane Sulfonate (PFOS) will be banned. PFOS is one of several PFAS compounds being phased out globally due to environmental and health concerns.

Niescioruk said: “Fluorine-free, alcohol-resistant foams are particularly suited for chemical tankers, Norwegian double-ended ferries, and methanol-fuelled vessels, where environmental performance and fire safety are paramount.

“The successful completion of these performance tests allows Survitec to offer a tested and validated solution that mitigates technical risk and supports a smooth, compliant transition to fluorine-free technology.

“The findings are already being implemented in current projects, including a system commissioning in Turkey.”

He added: “These are safety-critical systems.

“Any significant changes to these systems must be handled carefully, allowing time to assess the engineering requirements and obtain the proper approvals.

“Our message to the market is clear: plan now, test early, and work with an OEM partner who understands the technical and regulatory landscape.”

Veolia introduces PFAS treatment solution in UK

UK ban prompts new AFFF treatment rollout

Veolia has launched a high-temperature PFAS treatment service to manage Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) fire suppressants before their use is banned in the UK in July 2025.

According to Veolia, the company expects up to 10,000 tonnes of stored PFAS-containing AFFF to require safe disposal. The treatment will be carried out at its Ellesmere Port High Temperature Incinerator (HTI), approved by the Environment Agency.

The new service forms part of Veolia’s global BeyondPFAS programme and aims to support producers and users in safely disposing of AFFF stocks held across sectors including petrochemical, aviation and emergency services.

High temperature incineration process approved by regulator

The HTI process will destroy PFAS materials using thermal treatment at 1100 degrees Celsius.

Veolia stated that the facility has been validated by the Environment Agency, which has also approved the associated monitoring and emissions testing procedures.

The company projects a treatment efficiency of 99.999% for AFFF and other PFAS-containing wastes. The site is equipped to manage items such as fire extinguishers, suppressants and a wide range of industrial materials.

Broader PFAS disposal capacity beyond fire safety

Beyond firefighting applications, Veolia confirmed the HTI facility can also accept PFAS materials from sectors including chemical manufacturing, building and construction, metal finishing, semiconductors, textiles and paper products.

The company noted that the treatment infrastructure is part of a wider hazardous waste service that includes collection, incineration, recycling and reuse.

According to Veolia, this network currently treats around 8 million tonnes of hazardous waste annually across over 300 sites globally.

PFAS Alternatives Act reintroduced to support safer fire fighter gear

Lawmakers move to fund development of PFAS-free turnout gear

A bipartisan group in the United States Congress has reintroduced the PFAS Alternatives Act, legislation aimed at eliminating toxic chemicals from fire fighter protective clothing.

According to the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), the bill was brought forward by Representatives Debbie Dingell and Sam Graves, and seeks to authorise $25 million for research into protective gear that does not contain per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The IAFF said the bill would support the development of fire fighting gear that includes features such as visual alerts when cleaning is needed and adaptations to suit different body types.

IAFF highlights health concerns linked to PFAS exposure

The IAFF stated that exposure to PFAS in turnout gear is contributing to increased rates of cancer among fire fighters, citing that fire fighters are more than 14 percent more likely to die from certain cancers than the wider population.

IAFF General President Edward Kelly said: “The science is clear. Exposure to toxic PFAS chemicals is driving alarming rates of cancer in the fire service.”

He added: “The PFAS Alternatives Act is critical legislation that will help introduce next-generation, PFAS-free gear to better protect fire fighters and ensure we have a voice in developing the very products we rely on for safety.”

He continued: “The IAFF is grateful to Rep. Dingell and Rep. Graves for championing this legislation.”

Political backing for occupational safety reform

The IAFF reported that alongside Representatives Dingell and Graves, the bill has the support of lawmakers including Representatives Glenn Ivy, Brian Fitzpatrick, Dina Titus, Tom Kean Jr., Suzanne Bonamici, and Glenn “GT” Thompson.

Dingell said: “Fire fighters’ jobs are already dangerous enough without worrying about the long-term health risks of being exposed to dangerous PFAS in their turnout gear.”

She added: “The PFAS Alternatives Act will remove this unnecessary occupational hazard and help protect fire fighters as they work every day to protect us.”

Graves added: “America’s fire fighters charge into danger to save the lives of others. This bipartisan legislation will help develop the next-generation of firefighting gear to keep them safe.”

Federal support would extend beyond local efforts

The IAFF noted that while some U.S. states and cities have already moved to phase out PFAS in turnout gear, federal support is needed to scale research and ensure widespread availability of alternatives.

It explained that the PFAS Alternatives Act would provide funding through the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) to back collaboration between scientists and fire fighters on gear development.

According to the IAFF, the gear would be designed to be safer, more adaptable, and to include new safety indicators.

PFAS litigation risks in UK: Legal challenges grow for businesses amid regulatory scrutiny

UK inquiry into PFAS regulation highlights legal exposure

A parliamentary inquiry into per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is drawing attention to gaps in the UK’s chemical regulation and increasing the likelihood of legal claims against companies that manufacture or supply PFAS-containing products.

According to Pinsent Masons, businesses using PFAS face a growing risk of litigation due to the limited scope of current UK regulations.

PFAS are used in a wide range of products, including firefighting foams, food packaging, electronics, textiles and cleaning chemicals.

The Environmental Audit Committee is examining whether the UK’s regulatory regime—known as UK REACH—is sufficient.

The Committee will compare the UK’s approach with international frameworks such as those in the EU and US.

It has also opened a call for submissions on whether a precautionary or risk-based approach to PFAS regulation should be adopted, with a deadline of 26 May 2025.

Regulatory lag behind EU and US raises litigation concerns

Katie Hancock, a legal expert at Pinsent Masons, said that regulatory divergence from the EU following Brexit has heightened legal exposure for UK businesses dealing with PFAS.

Hancock said: “We have already seen how PFAS litigation is growing in other parts of the world, with a ‘class action’ claim against Apple in the US perhaps the latest high-profile example in the area of popular consumer goods.”

Hancock also noted that the perception of weaker UK regulation could attract more legal challenges, regardless of compliance with domestic rules.

She cited a judicial review that was brought—though ultimately unsuccessful—against the Environment Agency’s handling of PFAS oversight as an example of mounting legal interest.

Firefighting foam ban signals regulatory movement

Current UK regulations place minimal restrictions on PFAS.

However, from July 2025, the use of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) in firefighting foams will be banned.

OHEAP Fire and Security stated that the change “will not affect many units at all as the chemical that is being banned hasn’t been used for more than 10 years.”

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is assessing additional restrictions on wide dispersive uses, including coatings and cleaning agents.

It is also examining consumer goods that may release PFAS into air, water or soil.

Agricultural sector highlighted as at-risk area for PFAS claims

According to Hancock, agriculture is another sector where PFAS litigation may emerge.

She said outdated laws governing the use of sewage sludge on farmland could expose suppliers to legal challenges.

“There is a risk that land owners could raise claims against sludge suppliers in relation to PFAS content in the sludge,” Hancock said.

She referenced examples from the US, where such claims have been pursued, and from Germany, where a compensation fund was set up in 1998 to address damage linked to agricultural use of sewage sludge.

Hancock said: “Industry in the UK would benefit from further guidance from government and regulators on this topic.”

PFAS destruction technology tested in Minnesota waste facility

PFAS trial launched at Lake Elmo site in the United States

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems has reported that its commercial PERSES waste destruction system is being delivered to a waste management facility in Lake Elmo, Minnesota.

The deployment is part of a demonstration project led by environmental remediation firm Bay West LLC and funded by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC).

The trial aims to show PERSES’ capacity to destroy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) waste at industrial scale.

The system will remain at the Lake Elmo facility for approximately four weeks before being moved to other locations for additional demonstrations under separate contracts.

PERSES system previously verified in full-scale testing

In 2024, Bay West carried out trials at the General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems testing site in San Diego.

Analysis of the results, submitted to ERDC, indicated PERSES achieved 99.99% or greater PFAS destruction across various waste materials from both public and private sources.

The upcoming Lake Elmo trial will involve processing PFAS and other organic waste from sources including Aqueous Film-Forming Foam, landfill leachate, biosolid sludge, soils and sediment, and filtration materials such as granular activated carbon and resin beads.

Government and community support for demonstration project

Scott Forney, president of General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems, said: “Minnesota’s government leadership, as well as states across the nation are actively implementing strategies to eliminate PFAS from the environment and mitigate the adverse effects these ‘forever chemicals’ have on public health and safety.”

He added: “We are excited to bring the destruction power of PERSES to Lake Elmo as local, state, and federal government agencies continue to evaluate PERSES’ capabilities to eliminate PFAS from a myriad of waste streams.

“We appreciate the efforts the Lake Elmo city council and local community have made to support this project and look forward to a successful demonstration program.”

Bay West and ERDC roles in research and remediation

Bay West LLC is overseeing the demonstration project.

The company is based in St. Paul, Minnesota, and offers environmental consulting and remediation services for government and commercial clients.

ERDC is part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering.

It provides scientific and engineering expertise to U.S. military and civilian agencies on environmental and infrastructure challenges.

The phase-out of PFAS in firefighting: Britannia Fire explores what it means for fire safety standards

Innovations in fire extinguisher design and technology mean we now have greener alternatives that considerably reduce carbon emissions and improve sustainability.

Easier to maintain, they also provide long term cost-savings for the customer.

So why has the fire protection industry been slow to embrace this change?

Fire extinguishers play a vital role in fire protection.

They are essential for suppressing fire in its early stages and can help to prevent catastrophic damage and harm.

But there is so much more we can do as an industry to make their manufacture, supply and maintenance more environmentally friendly.

The sector has been slow to change course but is waking up to the fact that change is inevitable and that viable solutions are now readily available.

The future is composite

Traditional, steel fire extinguishers last around 10 years, but are prone to corrosion and must be serviced annually to ensure they remain fit for purpose.

We first started manufacturing steel fire extinguishers at our Britannia Fire factory in Norfolk back in 1970 and built a highly successful and respected brand around these early models and successive versions.

But by embracing the introduction of new materials and technology, our founder Roger Carr, saw an opportunity to create a new model out of composite material that would be corrosion resistant and lightweight, with no annual service required.

Launched in 2010, the P50 was the first composite fire extinguisher of its kind and has since been sold around the globe, with demand continuing to outstrip supply.

Last year, we took the significant step to discontinue the production of our original metal ranges altogether to focus solely on increasing supply of our P50 range.

It’s a superior product which provides a win-win for the customer and the environment.

Thanks to their anti-corrosion properties, composite fire extinguishers like the P50 can last 20 years: typically twice as long as metal varieties.

They don’t need to be serviced by a technician every year.

Instead, they just need simple, regular checks from a designated competent person, which can be done with the help of our dedicated App.

After 10 years, factory refurbishment will extend the life of a P50 for another 10 years.

As well as saving time and money on annual services and replacements, these extinguishers are much better for the environment, with a reduction in wastage and in carbon emissions around servicing.

Despite these innovations and the success of the P50, it’s still the case that the vast majority of fire extinguishers currently in use across the UK and Europe are traditional metal designs.

Most will have been manufactured in China and shipped thousands of miles before reaching the customer.

They are sold cheaply but on annual servicing contracts, which bring in an attractive revenue many suppliers are reluctant to give up.

An end to PFAS chemicals

AFFF fire extinguishers containing PFAS are the most common type of foam extinguishers.

These harmful ‘forever chemicals’ don’t break down in the environment, can disrupt biological processes and are toxic to some species.

Measures are being taken across the globe to reduce, restrict and phase out the use of PFAS, such as the UN’s Stockholm Convention, which is a global treaty to protect human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants.

Europe is taking the most progressive approach to regulation with a ban on firefighting foams containing PFAS due to come into force by 2030 and the UK is expected to follow this lead.

Britannia Fire is proud to be leading the way in championing environmentally friendly fire safety products.

In 2023, we launched our PFAS-free foam P50 model, which works effectively without the use of harmful fluoro chemicals.

Many companies and organisations are ahead of the game and choosing PFAS free models to help reduce their environmental impact.

UK government regulation is anticipated later this year, which will prohibit the manufacture and sale of fire extinguishers containing PFAS.

This is absolutely the right course of action, ensuring that as an industry we are all playing our part in supplying and promoting more sustainable products.

Multi-use extinguishers

Recent technologies and innovation have also helped to simplify the various types of fire extinguishers required and their applications.

This reduces the number of fire extinguishers required in certain locations, with a positive impact on both the environment and the customer’s bottom line.

Historically, customers would be required to install a combination of water-based, dry powder, or CO2 fire extinguishers depending on whether a fire in that location is likely to involve wood and textiles, electrical equipment or cooking oils.

Frequently, two or more models were installed side by side, with instructions for the user on which to operate.

Thankfully, a number of multipurpose options are now available, making installation and use much more straightforward.

Our P50 Water Mist extinguisher is safe to use on carbonaceous (Class A) fires, as well as electrical fires, so it’s perfect for offices, hotels, shops, churches and rental properties, for example.

It contains de-ionised water, which means it leaves almost no residue after use.

Our P50 PFAS-Free Foam model goes even further, extinguishing Class A (carbonaceous) fires, Class B (flammable liquids) fires, Class F (fats and oils) and has also passed the EN3 test for use on live electrical equipment up to 1000V.

This is suitable for garages, farms, chemical storage and large event venues, for example.

Heathrow Airport recently replaced its multiple sets of two extinguishers with P50 Foam multi-purpose units as part of its sustainability strategy.

These have saved the airport more than £1m and will need minimal servicing for a decade.

Providing one multi-purpose option is also much more user-friendly, particularly in a busy airport with worldwide travellers speaking many different languages!

Despite these innovations, too many companies and organisations are still wasting time and money on unnecessary annual servicing and multiple units.

Some guidelines, even those issued by the British Standards Institute, have been slow to keep pace with innovations and still recommend outdated servicing practices.

However, we can assure our customers that Britannia Fire P50 extinguishers conform to Pressure Equipment Regulations and European standards, they are BS EN3-7 certified and have a BSI Kitemark to show they are safe and legal to use in the UK.

In addition, we need to raise awareness amongst those responsible for fire safety, providing them with the right training, tools and guidance to source the most suitable equipment for their fire safety needs whilst minimising impact on the environment.
