Fire in Poznań tenement building causes multiple injuries
As reported by the Headquarters of the State Fire Service, a fire broke out on the night of August 24-25, 2024, in the basement of a tenement house on Kraszewskiego Street in Poznań, Poland.
During the firefighting operations, an explosion occurred, resulting in injuries to eleven firefighters and three civilians.
The explosion injured two passersby and one resident of the building.
The fire prompted the evacuation of 20 people from the affected building, most of whom had evacuated before the fire brigade arrived, alerted by a smoke detector.
An additional 100 people were evacuated from neighbouring buildings.
The fire, which spread throughout the building and reached the roof, required the involvement of 100 firefighters and 30 rescue vehicles, including specialist search and rescue teams from Poznań and Łódź.
Despite their efforts, the building’s structural integrity was compromised, leading to a collapse that necessitated stabilisation efforts to continue the search for missing firefighters.

The operations led to the loss of two firefighters, Patryk Michalski and Łukasz Włodarczyk, both serving at the Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Poznań.
The explosion in the basement critically impacted the rescue efforts, and despite the best efforts of their colleagues, the two firefighters did not survive.
The injured firefighters received immediate medical attention.
Four are currently being treated in hospitals in Poznań, while two with severe burns were transported to a specialist facility in Siemianowice Śląskie.

The severity of the incident attracted the attention of several high-ranking officials, including Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration Wieslaw Leśniakiewicz, Voivode of Wielkopolska Agata Sobczyk, Senior Brigadier Mariusz Feltynowski, Chief Commandant of the State Fire Service, and Senior Brigadier Józef Galica, Deputy Chief Commander of the State Fire Service.
Also in attendance were Deputy Chief Commander of the Police Chief Inspector Roman Kuster and the Mayor of Poznań, Jacek Jaśkowiak.
Psychological assistance was provided on-site to support the firefighters and their families, a vital step in addressing the immediate emotional impact of the tragedy.
