Early fire detection with TITANUS® air sampling smoke detectors

Every second counts where fire is concerned. The faster a fire is detected, the faster action can be taken in order to prevent more serious damage. The head start that WAGNER’S TITANUS® air sampling smoke detectors offer can be crucial to a company’s continued existence. After all, fire is an ever-present risk that is not to be underestimated. Material assets, operational processes, people and the environment are always exposed to this threat, which is why appropriate fire protection solutions are so important.

According to statistics by Siegfried Bussenius, the majority of damaging fires (68 %) develop from prolonged smouldering fires. Conventional smoke detectors have a crucial disadvantage there: depending on whether they are optical fire detectors or heat detectors, these smoke detectors will only react to high concentrations of smoke or increased temperatures within the protected area. By that time it is often too late to implement countermeasures.

WAGNER’s highly sensitive air sampling smoke detection systems (previously known as aspirating smoke detection systems) offer early smoke detection in the pyrolysis phase along with graduated alarms. High response sensitivity, continuous air sampling, and a graded alarm-activation concept ensure early detection of smouldering and incipient fires, so that users have time to react to alarms appropriately.

BIG Fire & Ventilation Smoke Blocking Curtain assists rescue teams in disaster situations

BIG Fire & Ventilation have been designing and developing some of the world’s most innovative equipment to assist rescue teams in disaster situations and firefighting teams across the world with improving visibility and operating temperatures for rescue situations.

With the easily operated tension lever, the BIG Fire & Ventiliation’s portable smoke blocker made out of heat resistant fabric can be installed quickly into a door or entrance opening. The door to the affected area can then be opened so firefighters can enter the room behind for their operations without the spread of smoke and heat in the building. Escape routes for the residents and retreat ways for the fire fighters can then be kept smoke-free.

It is possible for the security backup to stay close to the attacking firefighters so the time for a rescue operation in case of a breathing protection emergency is considerably reduced. Dangerous situations through the spread of smoke and heat are effectively minimised or avoided because the portable smoke blocker allows control of the inflow of air to the area of the fire for directed and controlled ventilation.

Tomar presents Apsire Series: scene illumination solution

TOMAR has announced their Aspire Series which is set to revolutionise scene illumination for the market. Adaptable telescoping scene lighting is the foundation of the Aspire Pole Mounted Series. Selecting a combination of Flood or Spot optics in 2 independently adjustable light heads not only helps illuminate what matters on your scene, but also increases performance of the scene light.

Should a vehicle or apparatus change environments or overall uses, the modular design allows a quick swap out of modules that adapt to the vehicle’s overall mission. Since the modules in the Aspire Series are constructed using TOMAR’s patented hermetically sealing process, swapping out a module does not void the warranty or damage any seals.

Aspire Pole Mounted Series Summary:

  • Independently adjustable light beams to maximise the performance of on-scene illumination
  • Hybrid TIR Optics direct light where it belongs and greatly reduces stray light
  • Hermetically sealed light modules housed in a marine-grade coated extruded housing that are easy to replace and/or repair

Xtreme Mask – the latest advance in respiratory protection for wildfires

Wildland firefighters are exposed to several labour risks; heat, humidity, radiation, incandescent particles, microparticles, nanoparticles, smoke, fog, aqueous dispersions, viruses, bacteria, enzymes, proteins, gases, organic and inorganic vapours, acids, amine and formaldehyde in slow combustion.

The lack of solutions to protect firefighters from these contaminant agents limits the time of fire management’s interventions and represents significant damage to the health of firefighters, with short-term consequences (causing discomfort, choking sensation and poisoning) and long-term sequel (continued exposure to CO and formaldehyde can lead to disabling occupational diseases and even cancer).

The Xtreme Mask is an effective solution to protect the face and the respiratory tract in extreme situations*.

A multipurpose device specifically designed for wildland firefighting

The Xtreme Mask adapts completely to every protection need that can occur in a wildfire. It allows the coupling of different filters according to the operative:

Johnson Controls launched TYCO pressure control valves for fire protection systems

Johnson Controls announces the launch of two new TYCO® pressure control valves for fire protection systems: the TYCO® Model RV-1A Pressure Relief Valve and the TYCO® Model PRV-1A Pressure Reducing Valve. The new valves offer simple, low-maintenance solutions for controlling and maintaining optimal water pressure within commercial fire protection systems.

The TYCO® RV-1A Pressure Relief Valve automatically relieves excess pressure in fire protection systems to maintain a relatively constant system pressure as flow demands change. Its simple design eliminates the need for users to bleed trapped air from the diaphragm chamber. The valve offers users a nominal relief “set pressure” range of 30 to 250 psi (2.1 to 17.2 bar).

The TYCO® PRV-1A Pressure Reducing Valve reduces a higher inlet pressure to a lower outlet delivery pressure in water-filled pipes. It automatically maintains the outlet “set pressure” (static and residual) within a close range, regardless of fluctuations in the higher-pressure inlet line or varying flow rates.

“We developed both valves using the same diaphragm design as the TYCO® DV-5A deluge valve, said Gijsbert van Rooijen, global product manager, Johnson Controls. “With a simple trim configuration and just one moving part, just like the DV-5A, these new valves provide optimal pressure control with minimal maintenance and dependable, consistent operation over time.”

The RV-1A and PRV-1A valves are UL and ULc Listed and FM Approved. Both valves are factory assembled and fully trimmed. They are available in sizes ranging from two inches to eight inches, with flange-by-flange and grooved-by-grooved end connection options.

Bristol Uniforms launches stock styles

Bristol Uniforms, a specialist in the design, manufacture and supply of protective clothing for the emergency services, has launched its first ever selection of stock styles for structural firefighting.

Immediately available, the stock styles offer a more cost-effective solution than bespoke alternatives. Although ready-made, the PPE can be personalised by adding a heat-sealed patch to the back of each coat, a name to the front, and a name to each trouser. A choice of two styles are currently available, both conforming to the European CEN standard EN469 Level 2, and featuring the most popular elements of the company’s existing top-quality ranges.

The Ergotech Action stock design includes an anti-wicking barrier on the cuffs and hems, underarm gussets and pleated back panel for improved ergonomics, knee reinforcement, and numerous pockets, loops, and rings for equipment. The kit is made up of a navy TITAN1220 outer, Gore Crosstech Fireblocker moisture barrier and a quilted aramid felt and viscose inner lining.

The XFlex stock design features elbow reinforcement, ergonomic 3D knee pads with reinforcement to make kneeling more comfortable, plus an adjustable waist band, a removable braces system and a knife pouch in the trouser. It is made up of a gold PBI Max outer, Gore Crosstech Airlock moisture barrier and an aramid viscose inner lining. Bristol will soon be unveiling an additional Ergotech Action stock style which conforms to the NFPA standard 1971:2018 for Protective Ensembles for Page 2 of 3 Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting.

The new style will be on display for the first time at the Intersec trade exhibition in Dubai in January. Similar to the CEN certified version, it features a Gore Crosstech moisture barrier and Hainsworth TITAN outer layer, but this time in Desert Tan.

Roger Startin, joint managing director at Bristol Uniforms, commented: “We always listen to feedback from our customers, and although many have specific requirements and value our bespoke manufacturing service, there are others, particularly those with smaller crews, that would prefer to be able to buy top quality styles off-the-peg. These new styles provide our customers with the option to purchase kit that is cost-effective and immediately available without compromising on quality.”
