Maritime lithium-ion battery fire detection starts with heat

AP Sensing explains how fibre optic Linear Heat Detection enables earlier lithium-ion battery fire detection on ships through continuous thermal monitoring

On the open ocean, where a ship’s hull is its entire world, fire is one of the few threats that can escalate faster than a crew can respond. Today, that threat is increasingly linked to lithium ion batteries.

Once specialty cargo, they now move through global supply chains in huge volumes, powering electric vehicles, e-bikes, tools, laptops and portable electronics. The maritime industry understands how lithium ion batteries behave under failure conditions.

The chemistry is well studied and the progression from defect to thermal runaway is familiar. What remains difficult is spotting developing thermal events early enough to act. Conventional systems often react only once smoke or fire is visible.

At sea, earlier automatic detection and precise situational awareness can make a critical difference.

How lithium-ion battery fires begin at sea

A lithium ion battery failure usually begins quietly. A defect, manufacturing flaw or Lithium-Ion Battery Fires “The maritime industry understands how lithium ion batteries behave under failure conditions.” impact can cause a small, localised rise in temperature. Inside a battery pack or sealed container, that heat can build slowly and invisibly.

On ships, where containers are tightly stacked and airflow is limited, early detection is difficult. Monitoring still often relies on inspections and fire watches, but thermal events can develop between checks, especially where visibility is restricted.

This is why maritime fire safety is shifting from reacting to visible fire toward continuous, automated awareness of developing thermal conditions.

How fibre optic Linear Heat Detection works

Fibre optic Linear Heat Detection addresses this challenge by continuously monitoring temperature along the protected area.

AP Sensing uses a passive fibre optic sensor cable routed through the ship or cargo zone, creating a continuous sensing line rather than isolated detection points. Wherever the cable runs, temperature is measured.

The system provides thousands of temperature readings along the cable, creating a real time thermal map that updates every few seconds. If thresholds or abnormal thermal developments are detected, it automatically alarms on the bridge, helping crews assess and respond earlier.

How fibre optic sensing detects heat before fire

At the centre of the system is a controller that sends short laser pulses into an optical fibre. As light travels through the fibre, a tiny portion scatters back from every point along the sensor cable.

Part of these backscattered light changes with temperature, while another part remains stable. By comparing the two, the system calculates temperature at every point along the cable. It also measures how long the light takes to return, allowing localised temperature changes to be precisely located.

This creates a complete, real-time temperature profile across the monitored area, not just a reading at one hotspot. Operators can see where heat is developing, how temperatures change and whether a thermal event is spreading.

For lithium-ion battery cargo, where conditions can escalate rapidly, continuous awareness is critical.

Maritime lithium-ion battery fire detection proven at sea

Technology is already proven in demanding environments.

Fibre optic Linear Heat Detection has long been used as a certified special detector within fire alarm systems. Before lithium-ion batteries became a growing maritime concern, it was deployed across road and rail tunnels, parking garages, large photovoltaic installations and storage facilities.

In these settings, reliability is essential. Detection systems must perform despite contamination, electromagnetic interference, vibration, weather and other harsh influences.

Fibre optic LHD has demonstrated this resilience while helping operators maintain safety and avoid unnecessary interruptions. This history is important because the technology is not new to challenging conditions.

At sea, however, airflow, motion and operational constraints create a distinct detection challenge. To explore this, AP Sensing’s system was evaluated alongside conventional and alternative detection technologies in a major European and insurance research initiative focused on fire safety on RoRo (Roll on, roll off) and container vessels. Testing included laboratory work and long-term onboard trials under real operating conditions.

The findings contributed to the inclusion of fibre optic Linear Heat Detection in the maritime SOLAS Fire Safety Systems (FFS) Code in early 2026, reflecting growing recognition of continuous thermal monitoring in maritime fire protection.

AP Sensing’s solution is also DNV-approved for safety-critical ship environments. The results highlighted the limits of traditional smoke detection on ships. In controlled settings, smoke detectors performed well. At sea, airflow, humidity, salt aerosols and engine related particles could delay detection or increase nuisance alarms.

Fibre optic Linear Heat Detection was unaffected by these challenges. Because it measures temperature directly along the cable, it remained reliable regardless of airflow or airborne contaminants.

The trials also showed that the system can reveal how a thermal event develops. It pinpointed the heat source and helped operators track spread and direction, giving crews precise, real-time information instead of a general alarm.

Why fibre optic heat detection suits maritime fire safety

Beyond detection performance, fibre optic Linear Heat Detectors fit maritime operations. The sensing cable is passive and needs no electrical power along its length, simplifying installation and removing potential ignition sources.

The system also remains active during loading and unloading, when cargo handling introduces added risk.

How early heat detection improves maritime fire response

Detecting heat early is only part of the equation. What matters is how quickly and effectively that information becomes action. In a maritime environment, where response time is critical and access can be limited, crews need to know where something is happening and how it is evolving.

Fibre optic sensing provides this insight in real time. Temperature data is processed in the measuring unit and visualised through a graphical user interface (GUI), giving operators a continuous view of conditions across the vessel.

Alarm strategies can be configured around absolute temperatures or temperature gradients, enabling early warnings of abnormal developments before a localised issue escalates.

Lithium-ion battery fire detection beyond maritime transport

With lithium-ion batteries, the challenge does not begin or end at sea. A battery’s journey spans storage, transport, use and recycling. Across these stages, the pattern remains the same: heat develops before fire.

Fibre optic Linear Heat Detection applies this principle consistently. A continuous sensing cable enables early detection and precise localisation, supporting a unified approach to fire safety beyond maritime transport.

This is especially relevant in battery storage facilities, where large volumes of cells are concentrated in confined spaces and in recycling operations, where damaged or unstable batteries add risk during handling and processing.

Across these environments, the value is consistent: early insight enables faster, better-informed decisions and safer operations.

Meet AP Sensing at SMM Hamburg

At SMM maritime exhibition in Hamburg, September 1-4, discussions around lithium-ion battery safety and early fire detection will continue across the industry.

AP Sensing’s fire detection expert, Felix Heck, will be on site to present how fibre optic Linear Heat Detection and Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing are applied in real maritime environments. He will share how continuous thermal monitoring supports earlier detection and more informed response strategies.

Fluorine-free firefighting foam without compromise: The role of Enviro 3×3 NEO from Dafo Fomtec

John Olav Ottesen explains how the company’s new fluorine-free firefighting foam combines evidence-led testing, fully hydrated polymer technology and operational reliability

In January 2026 Dafo Fomtec announced the launch of Enviro 3×3 NEO, the sixth-generation alcohol-resistant synthetic fluorine-free firefighting foam (AR SFFF) that represents the culmination of its Enviro Programme.

Following the launch, International Fire & Safety Journal sat down with Founder and CEO John Olav Ottesen to discuss what sets the new concentrate apart, why an evidence-led testing programme has underpinned Fomtec’s approach to the fluorine-free transition and why the Middle East remains central to its strategy as the GCC accelerates its own move away from PFAS-based foams.

Enviro 3×3 NEO is described as the sixth generation in the Enviro range. Where does it sit in Fomtec’s line-up and why now?

NEO is the product that the Enviro Programme has been driving towards from the beginning. It is an alcohol-resistant synthetic fluorine-free concentrate engineered specifically for petrochemical, oil and gas, marine and offshore operations.

The timing of the launch reflects both where the regulatory landscape is heading and where our evidence base has brought us.

NEO delivers the performance profile those high-hazard industries demand, while meeting the environmental expectations industry and regulators are rightly placing on us. It is, in every sense, a no-compromise product.

You describe the Enviro Programme as the foundation of everything Fomtec has done in SFFFs. Why has it mattered so much and what has it actually delivered?

When we began the Enviro Programme more than a decade ago, we recognised early that removing fluorine from firefighting foam could not be a marketing exercise and had to be science.

Fluorinated foams had decades of real-world data behind them; a credible fluorine-free

alternative needed a comparable evidence base and it did not yet exist. The Programme has been built on full-scale fire testing at a scale few have attempted: over 2,500 full-scale fires to date, on hydrocarbons from heptane to Jet A-1 to plant-based fuels and gasoline blends, alongside polar solvents, foam destroyers and fuels tested with fresh, brackish and sea water.

Out of it has come the entire Enviro family (Class A, ICAO, USP, ARK, 3×3 Plus, Ultra, eMax and now NEO). We have also developed an analytical modelling tool that allows us to predict performance on a client’s fuel without setting it on fire.

For Fomtec, the Enviro Programme is a benchmark for how fluorine-free foam should be developed and not just a research project.

The launch material highlights the elimination of the “hidden gum” effect associated with partially hydrated polymer systems. Can you expand on this and explain where it sits within Fomtec’s broader formulation approach?

This goes to the heart of Fomtec’s formulation philosophy and it applies across the entire Enviro range. Alcohol-resistant foams need polymers to build the membrane that extinguishes polar solvent fires, but how those polymers are handled in the concentrate matters enormously.

There are broadly three possibilities. Un-hydrated polymers — essentially dry polymer added to the concentrate — will absorb water unpredictably over time, leading to viscosity drift, sediment formation and potential proportioning failure.

Partially hydrated polymers avoid the dry-powder problem but bring their own issue: the “hidden gum” effect, where viscosity increase, phase separation and polymer drop-out can develop when the foam encounters water ingress or suboptimal storage.

Either way, the operator ends up with a concentrate that no longer behaves like the product they originally approved. Fomtec’s commitment, across every AR product in the Enviro range, is to use only 100% fully hydrated polymers. That is a formulation decision, not a marketing one.

It means stable viscosity and known shear-thinning today and in the  future. For high-hazard sites where systems can sit dormant for long periods and must perform on first demand, that reliability is not optional.

NEO is a 3 × 3 product (3% for hydrocarbons and 3% for polar solvents). Why does that matter operationally?

For any facility holding both hydrocarbon and polar solvent inventories a single 3% concentrate simplifies almost everything. One product in the tank, one proportioning setting, one set of procedures.

The envelope includes MEK, ethyl and butyl acetate, IPA, methanol, ethanol and acetone, and it handles what we call “foam destroyers” such as MTBE. For a fire officer, that breadth under one SKU is a real operational advantage.

Performance with seawater and brackish water is repeatedly highlighted in the NEO documentation. Does that tie back to what we have just been discussing?

Directly. Many GCC and offshore installations draw firewater from the sea and the quality is simply not a controlled variable. We have validated NEO across fresh, brackish and sea water so the performance envelope is the same whichever source the deluge draws from.

The 100% hydrated polymer formulation holds its viscosity and shear-thinning profile and proportioning remains uniform.  For Gulf operators, marine and offshore facilities anywhere in the world, that consistency across water qualities is what separates a predictable fire performance margin from a guess.

ECHA’s restriction dossier is advancing, with SEAC and RAC opinions due by end-2026 and legislation anticipated in 2027. How should end users interpret the timeline?

I would urge end users not to confuse the regulatory timetable with their own planning timetable. Even with the derogations we expect — and Fomtec has

consistently supported the time-limited derogations approach — the direction of travel is settled globally, not just in Europe. The GCC is watching ECHA closely and procurement specifications in the region are already shifting toward fluorine-free.

A safe transition takes time, and Fomtec continues to supply fresh, approved C6 foam to customers while they plan and execute that work. That is not a contradiction; it is how we reduce risk. A responsible transition is holistic — the foam, the system, the procedures, the training.

What should the industry, and the Middle East region in particular, take from NEO and the next phase of the Enviro Programme?

First, demand evidence: ask your foam supplier for full-scale data on your fuels, your hardware and your water quality. Second, treat fluorine-free as an engineering project, not a procurement decision. Third, start now. Enviro 3×3 NEO is where the Enviro Programme was always heading, but the Programme continues — more fuels, more hardware combinations, more validation.

The Middle East will be central to that next phase, through Leaders in Fire 2026, through Intersec and through engagement with the region’s NOCs and the wider JOIFF community. We are ready for what comes next — and with NEO, our customers are too.

Flame detectors from FlameSpec gain Saudi Made domestic status

Saudi manufacturing for FlameSpec flame detectors

Fire & Gas Detection Technologies said it has begun local manufacturing of its FlameSpec line of flame detectors in Saudi Arabia under the Saudi Made initiative.

The company reported that this step advances its work with energy operators in the Gulf Cooperation Council region and aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 programme.

Since its founding in 2017, Fire & Gas Detection Technologies has focused on product development in flame and gas detection markets.

FlameSpec detectors are described as offering rapid response times and strong resistance to false alarms.

They are designed to identify both large and small fires at distance in varied environmental conditions.

The company stated that customers have reported high satisfaction with product quality and performance when systems are delivered and commissioned.

Performance features and regional growth

The company reported that FlameSpec is now regarded as a leading flame detector brand in the Americas and Europe.

To support growth in the Middle East and South Asia, Fire & Gas Detection Technologies opened its first international branch in Abu Dhabi in November 2024.

Even before that office opened, the company was working to secure vendor approvals from major energy companies in the Gulf Cooperation Council region.

This work led to Approved Manufacturer status with Saudi Aramco and ADNOC in July 2025.

According to the company, these approvals reflected interest from operators in ultra-fast fire response times, improved false alarm rejection and an integrated video camera within the detectors.

The integrated camera is intended to support alarm response and incident recording by providing immediate visual evidence after an event.

Fire & Gas Detection Technologies said this evidence can help clients maintain operational continuity and may support reduced insurance premiums where insurers accept such data.

An image supplied with the announcement shows Mudassir Sawant, Division Manager at Binzagr for Industry and Maintenance, alongside Fire & Gas Detection Technologies President Olden Carr, 9com Manager Technical Sales Bernard D Souza and Vice President Worldwide Sales Iain Evans.

BFIM partnership supports Saudi production

To deliver local manufacturing within Saudi Arabia, Fire & Gas Detection Technologies has partnered with Binzagr for Industry and Maintenance.

Binzagr for Industry and Maintenance has more than 30 years of experience in industrial supplies and services and more recent activity in flame and gas detection.

The company has an established history as a 9com approved supplier.

Fire & Gas Detection Technologies worked with Binzagr for Industry and Maintenance to upgrade the partner’s Jubail manufacturing facility to electronics production standards.

This upgrade included adoption of Fire & Gas Detection Technologies operating procedures and quality standards at the site.

Earlier in 2025, the Jubail facility was added to the Fire & Gas Detection Technologies Anaheim FM Manufacturing certificate.

In August 2025, Binzagr for Industry and Maintenance was confirmed as a 9com provider for flame detection.

Fire & Gas Detection Technologies said that together the two companies are now the first to manufacture flame detectors domestically in Saudi Arabia.

The company added that local production allows customers to source equipment that can improve IKTVA score outcomes and support Vision 2030 localisation goals while maintaining access to FlameSpec technology.

Localised flame detection for energy projects

Energy-sector safety officers in Saudi Arabia and the wider Gulf Cooperation Council region may find the localisation of FlameSpec production directly relevant to procurement planning.

Local manufacturing through Binzagr for Industry and Maintenance creates a domestically produced flame detection option that can contribute to IKTVA scores and Vision 2030 localisation targets.

For procurement officers and equipment specifiers working with Saudi Aramco, ADNOC and other regional operators, Approved Manufacturer status with these companies clarifies that FlameSpec detectors meet internal vendor requirements.

The integrated video camera in each detector also has operational implications for facility managers, risk assessors and fire-protection contractors.

Immediate access to incident footage can support faster alarm verification, structured incident recording and discussions with insurers where coverage depends on documented evidence.

For installers and system integrators, the combination of rapid response times and improved false alarm rejection will be relevant when designing detection schemes for complex industrial environments.

The presence of a regional branch in Abu Dhabi also offers a contact point for consultants and engineering teams in the Middle East and South Asia who need technical support close to project sites.

Overall, the combination of local manufacturing, documented approvals and performance features aligns the detectors with large industrial and energy facilities rather than general commercial properties.

2025 marks the official launch of FGD’s products in the Middle East with a newly opened branch office in the UAE to better serve key clients in the region and across the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Fire & Gas Detection Technologies Inc. (FGD) tackles the daily challenges that affect productivity, safety and profitability by offering solutions that minimise false alarms. FGD specialises in flame detection equipment designed to enhance workplace safety in the event of accidents and process failures.

FGD’s key markets include oil and gas, energy transition (including BESS sites and hydrogen) and waste recycling and energy facilities. Since its establishment in 2017, FGD’s team of experienced engineers has developed a range of flame detectors, including the FlameSpec series.

Since 2019 and 2020, FGD has been supplying products to customers in the Americas and Europe, respectively.

Global expansion and new branch office in the UAE

The branch, offering customer service, technical and sales support, is poised to meet the growing demand for advanced fire and gas detection technologies. Iain Evans, who has been promoted to President of FGD Middle East, will lead a team to fulfil the needs of customers across the region.

Innovative flame detection technology

One of the company’s standout offerings is its advanced flame detection technology, which includes both IR3 and UV-IR detectors. These technologies are well known in the Middle East, but FGD has significantly improved response times and false alarm rejection.

These products were created by the same engineers responsible for developing the original IR3 and UV-IR technologies still in use today. FGD’s core goal is to meet the industry’s ongoing need for safer and more reliable detection systems.

False alarms remain the most frequent issue for users of IR3 and UV-IR technology and these advancements address that challenge head-on with some truly innovative solutions, including FlameSpec CO2L, FlameSpec Blade and FlameSpec StretcH2.

With these enhancements, FGD’s FlameSpec family of detectors provides a significant leap forward in flame detection technology.

These products serve both traditional oil and gas industries and the emerging energy transition sectors, offering specialised solutions for hydrogen flame detection, spark and arc monitoring and avoiding false alarms from hot CO2 exhausts.

Additionally, these detectors can pinpoint the exact location of flames within their field of view.

Integrating video and AI technology for enhanced safety

In addition to these improvements, FGD has integrated video technology into its detection systems. This offers operators an added layer of security and provides them with real-time visual confirmation of any fire alarms.

Typically, security cameras are installed in safe areas such as the perimeter, entry gates and doors, but they rarely cover hazardous areas due to restricted access. However, FGD’s HD detectors allow operators to view these high-risk areas and even employ AI to detect movement, such as people or objects.

Given the vast amount of data operators must process, these devices help reduce information overload, ensuring that quick, informed decisions can be made in the event of an alarm.

FDG expand reach by launching in the Middle East: Summary

Fire & Gas Detection Technologies Inc has announced that they will be launching their services in the Middle East. Since 2019 and 20202, FDG have supplied products in America and Europe.

Cerberus PACE systems are fully compliant with the EN 54-16 standard and local codes of practice in European countries. The systems can cover all redundancy, ensuring there is adequate back-up. To support the safety-first approach, both high performing and reliable systems stand for no single point of failure, thanks to distributed intelligence, where each network participant has a CPU (a chip that allows the device to be made independent).

Ensured business continuity

For convenient setup and management of all components, Cerberus PACE comes with dedicated configuration software and real-time engineering. The system can be configured live, while it is running, without causing any interruption to day-to-day activities. No shut down is necessary for maintenance or to change the configuration, with remote access ensuring business continuity, whatever the environment. This is a crucial consideration for many applications where 24/7 operation is required.

Flexibility and compatibility

The state-of-the-art modular and scalable system architecture ensures that Cerberus PACE can be customised for buildings of all types and requirements. Cerberus PACE Compact can be combined with the Modular system using the same network and configuration tools to offer a wider choice of ancillary products (for example, amplifiers or audio matrix), while also enabling cost optimisation.

In addition, both systems can be used for stepwise modernisations of older voice alarmsystems (often using existing cabling), making it possible to futureproof the systemto meet changing demands. Different connection options (loop, stub line, double stub lines, and even compatibility with star structures or T-taps) offer greater flexibility during the installation process.
