Fit for purpose, fit for duty, with Fire-Dex

There’s no blueprint for fighting wildfires, much less the countless other emergencies firefighters must respond to. Recently, we’ve witnessed how quickly California’s Santa Ana winds can turn a small blaze into a raging inferno. Conditions and circumstances change in an instant—fires suddenly explode in size, while rescue missions can stretch for hours and miles, and firefighters must adapt on the fly. 

Simply put, daily workloads have no quick in and out or predictability. Responders must be ready to endure exhausting shifts, sometimes for days at a time, haul heavy gear over rugged terrain, or manage all the unknowns that may accompany a motor vehicle accident (MVA). 

In fact, NFPA statistics show that all firefighters are taking more calls than ever, including hazardous materials and hazardous conditions.

That’s why PPE manufacturers like Fire-Dex are designing gear to help ease stress on the fireground and beyond. Advances in material science, smarter designs and a changing philosophy are creating the next generation of apparel that’s designed to work with—not against—first responders and keep them in the fight longer. 

Rethinking PPE  

For a long time, many firefighters have worn the same PPE for every call. That usually means full turnouts for everything from a structural fire to an MVA in the July sun. But increasingly, research is revealing the downside of this thinking, making way for an approach that calls for the right gear for the right call.  

The shift is long overdue. While structural fire incidents have dropped significantly over the past 40 years, EMS calls have surged by 421%, and all other calls have nearly tripled according to the NFPA. Yet firefighters are still expected to wear turnouts for non-fire emergencies where no thermal protection is needed.  

Turnouts are great when you need them—but wearing them all day? That’s just added weight and stress on your body. Heat stress and overexertion are the top causes of firefighter line-of-duty-deaths (LODDs), and sometimes, lighter gear is the smarter choice.

Alternative PPE provides the right level of protection for most calls while preventing unnecessary fatigue and keeping structural gear fresh for when it’s truly needed. 

There’s also the issue of contamination. Firefighters don’t just fight fires—they bring part of them back. Moving between the scene, the truck, and the station in the same gear means contaminants can come along for the ride.

Studies show that air pollution inside fire stations poses significant risks, especially in living quarters and engine bays where gear and equipment are stored.

Pollutants can also concentrate inside fire trucks. Alternative PPE, as an option for non-fire calls, can help mitigate these risks by reducing the likelihood of cross-contamination. 

The alternative PPE advantage 

Not all PPE is created equal—especially when it comes to alternative gear. It’s not just about making something lighter; it has to be built to perform. Firefighters don’t just face one type of hazard. Even on non-fire calls, there’s still heat, abrasion and unexpected risks.  

That’s where strategic material selection comes in. The best alternative PPE doesn’t overload firefighters with unnecessary bulk, but it also doesn’t skimp on protection where it’s needed.

It’s a delicate balance: Use materials that provide the right protection for the right call, without adding extra bulk that weighs you down. Without the need for the heaviest materials, firefighters can choose PPE that breathes better and lets cool air circulate around the body. 

Regulating core body temperature is essential for reducing heat stress and fatigue, both of which can significantly impact a person’s cognitive function and reaction time. When body temperature rises, the body naturally cools itself through evaporative heat loss—but traditional turnout gear can trap sweat, preventing proper heat dissipation. 

One suit, many uses 

Not every emergency is a structure fire, and not every call should require hauling around full turnouts. In response, the market offers many multipurpose options like Fire-Dex’s TECGEN51 Multipurpose PPE. As a two-piece or coverall, it’s dual-certified to NFPA 1951 (technical rescue) and 1977 (wildland performance) for non-fire calls like MVAs, electrical issues and search and rescue missions—it’s lightweight, breathable and built to move. 

The reason is the TECGEN fiber, an inherently flame-resistant material with a high-density carbon shell and a flexible core. That combination provides increased durability over typical carbon-based fibers.

This technology enables the development of fabrics that simultaneously offer high levels of thermal protection (TPP) and breathability (THL). That’s to say, there’s less trade-off between the two, making a multipurpose garment more viable and effective than ever. 

Most people don’t think twice about sweat, but firefighters don’t have that luxury. Battalion Chief Andy Starnes of Insight Training warns that wearing turnouts unnecessarily—especially in hot, humid conditions—can cause serious issues: “It makes managing moisture critical because drenched gear isn’t just annoying—it’s dangerous.

Exhaustion doesn’t happen all at once—it builds until every move in heavy, sweat-soaked gear feels like a fight. And that’s a cycle no firefighter wants to be stuck in.”

Beyond the materials, design choices affect the safety and useability of gear. For example, multipurpose PPE might feature a bi-wing back design in the jacket that improves shoulder and arm mobility, so it’s easier to climb and maneuver in tight spaces without feeling restricted.

As another example, a Mandarin-style collar with a throat closure might be used to prevent debris from getting inside the jacket, but without the bulk and discomfort of traditional collars. 

Even little changes can make a big difference. Pant legs, for instance, might seem a trivial consideration, but features like oversized legs with long zipper bottoms can make it much easier to pull the pants over your boots without struggling. In all cases, the goal is to help wearers stay focused on their gear instead of fighting it. 

With advances in alternative PPE across the fire industry, achieving the right level of protection and mobility without the strain of full turnouts is possible. Of course, for many fire departments, alternative PPE can seem like a large investment in an entirely new class of gear. The financials, however, are not to be feared. The use of multipurpose PPE can greatly extend the useful life of pricier turnouts by letting them hang out at the station when non-fire calls come in. Furthermore, manufacturers may bundle gear like turnouts, alternative PPE and accessories at a discount to customers. 

Firefighters give everything they’ve got to the job. Their gear should give just as much back. The latest PPE innovations can help keep them safer, cooler and more comfortable. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue publish Statement of Assurance

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service has published its latest performance report which shows firefighters attend more than 8,800 incidents in 2023/24, a reduction of nine per cent.

Staffordshire’s Statement of Assurance covers the 12 months between April 2023 to March 2024 and highlights prevention, protection and response activity across Staffordshire and how local communities and their priorities has been supported.

In October 2023, Staffordshire Firefighters were given access to two drones to gather aerial intelligence by live-streaming imaging to colleagues on the ground. They provide additional support by gathering information of the structural integrity of buildings, monitoring fire spread and confirming safe areas.

Two new aerial ladder platform (ALP) vehicles hit the roads of Staffordshire in March 2024 which allow rescues from tall buildings and help when tackling difficult to reach fires. Based at Longton and Burton, they replaced existing ALPs which had used for nearly 20 years.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service also recruited 34 wholetime firefighters, 70 on-call firefighters and 10 support staff.

According to its Statement of Assurance they also made visits to almost 14,000 homes of vulnerable people to do Safe and Well checks, an increase of seven per cent compared to the previous 12 months.

Rob Barber, Chief Fire Officer for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “It is pleasing to see that overall incidents are down and in particular house fire injuries and small outdoor fires which have seen a significant decrease.

“Whilst there has been a notable percentage increase in deliberate business fires, some of which are void premises, the numbers are still relatively low.

“When these incidents occur our fire investigators work closely with police to provide evidence to help bring those responsible to justice.

“Key achievements include the development of the falls response team and the home from hospital service, both providing support to vulnerable individuals and helping alleviate the pressures on the NHS and social care.”

Surge in demand ahead for fire protection systems

The global fire protection systems market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.3%, reaching a valuation of US$ 138 Billion in 2032. This is a rise on the 6% CAGR seen across the 2015 to 2021 period.

The implementation of stringent fire safety norms across the globe has already contributed significantly to growth and the surging adoption of targeted marketing by renowned companies to explain the benefits of a fire protection system is expected to further attract the attention of small, medium and large enterprises.

Ongoing construction of new properties globally both non-residential and residential projects are anticipated to create growth opportunities for the installation of fire alarms and detection systems. The incorporation of modern technologies such as artificial intelligence, the internet of things, and smart sensors are also expected to drive the market.

The use of fire protection systems is also growing in industries such as oil and gas, manufacturing, and mining, where fire safety norms are followed mandatorily. Growing concerns about safety and better understanding of precautionary measures are also driving the use of fire protection systems in a wide range of end-use sectors.

Active fire protection market set for growth post Covid-19

The active fire protection market is comprised of detection/alarms and suppression systems. Alarms and detection systems account for 63% of the overall active fire protection market, having gained slight share over the last two years, with the majority of installations of products and systems going into the non-domestic sectors. Domestic smoke alarms only account for a small portion of total market value.

Over the last decade or so, innovations in detection technology have significantly reduced the likelihood and number of false alarms, through such developments as improved capability of sensor technology in smoke detectors. However, the number of false alarms due to apparatus faults has stabilised in the last three years, suggesting that more recent product improvements are no longer having an impact on the number of false alarms.

AMA Research’s current forecast indicates a decline in 2020 due to the impact of Covid-19, this is down to the closing building sites, the furloughing of employees as well as restrictions on the supply of building materials throughout the world. The active fire protection market is expected to grow by 14% between 2020 and 2024.

Fire detectors, which serve to identify where a fire is occurring by locating heat, smoke or flames, before providing a warning of the blaze through an audible alarm and often through the alerting the fire service will outperform the market, increasing 17% between 2020 and 2024.

Higher levels of publicity and the greater awareness of fire safety measures, particularly within high rise buildings, should stimulate demand for active fire protection products. This should be seen in both new installations and particularly in the replacement sector.

Increasingly, businesses are adopting integrated fire and security systems, which is likely to remain a key feature of the industry. IT-based security systems, often including fire protection systems in combination with other security measures on a single network, such as video surveillance, access control and intruder alarms.

That said, changes to building regulations in the wake of the Hackitt Review will provide additional demand for the fire protection industry, particularly with regard to sprinkler systems in high buildings.”

S-Gard: providing protection for fire and rescue services

Current topics are weight reduction, breathability and freedom of movement. Another central topic that has been increasingly brought into focus in recent years is the avoidance of contact with hazardous substances. For example, fire smoke contains carcinogenic toxins such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). But other hazardous substances can also be deposited on clothing. There is an enhanced risk of absorbing the toxins, especially when the operational clothing is taken off. Appropriate operational hygiene is therefore of great importance.

On its YouTube channel S-Gard gives helpful recommendations in a video series. To deepen the knowledge, S-Gard regularly holds seminars on operational hygiene, cleaning and maintenance of protective clothing. S-Gard also has a list of cleaning companies certified specifically for the washing of protective clothing.

Ranger 2.0 – the protective suit for fighting wildfires

S-Gard also has new products available on the market, including Ranger 2.0 – the protective suit for fighting wildfires. During wildland operations, task forces are often exposed to high heat for hours and have to cover long distances on foot. Operational clothing must thus not only protect against heat, it should also be light, breathable and suitable for movement. For such applications S-Gard has developed the Ranger 2.0 protective suit. Jacket and trousers can be coupled with a zipper. In order to save weight, material doublings were dispensed with. Instead, a ceramic coating provides increased protection against abrasion.

S-Gard uses the highly breathable Ecodry from Hainsworth as the outer material. The suit also has ventilation openings on the arm and leg sides. Stretch zones made of elastic Nomex material, pant gusset and stretch pleats at the sleeve base ensure exceptional freedom of movement.

Hero 2.0 – The protective suit from S-GARD has been completely revised

The Hero jacket now features segmented reflective stripes, patch radio pockets and checker plate reinforcements at the elbows, cuffs and flaps. The multi-layer material is absolutely heat-resistant and very durable. S-Gard uses the highly breathable Gore-Tex Airlock membrane as a moisture barrier.

Its highlight: small silicone buffers provide space between the membrane and the outer fabric. This improves insulation in extreme situations, and the layer structure is also more flexible and less bulky. The three-dimensional special fabric DR3Lite is used for the lining.

UK fire industry workers demand PPE

According to a survey by Populus Data Solution, the vast majority of workers across industries believe that it is their employer’s responsibility to ensure they have the right protective equipment in the workplace, with a significant number stating they would refuse to go to work without the right PPE.

The survey, carried out for industrial workwear and protective clothing specialists Ballyclare, also found that a large proportion of workers are still seeking clarity on PPE from their employers and the Government. The results come as Ballyclare publishes a new factsheet, clearly spelling out to employers and employees exactly which PPE should be worn across various workplace settings and how it can be worn most safely.

As the economy slowly reopens, worker safety is a key focus for both employers and employees. When asked who should be responsible for ensuring workers have the right equipment to work safely, 87% of respondents said it is the employer’s role, while 40% also said the Government should shoulder the responsibility. Those working in the retail and consumer, manufacturing, transport, and logistics sectors all pointed to their employers as responsible for making sure they had the right protective gear (89%), while hospitality and leisure followed close by (84%).

In a stark illustration of the issues facing businesses coming out of lockdown, the survey found that if an employer did not provide the employee with personal protective equipment, almost twice as many people would refuse to go into work than would not. 40% said they would be either likely or very likely to refuse to go into work, whilst 23% said they would still attend.

The survey results showed that a significant majority of workers are crying out for clarity on what protective equipment they should wear. 74% said they would feel far safer in returning to work if their employers provide the right PPE – with 81% saying they wanted clear advice from their employer. At the same time, 73% of people said they also wanted clear advice from the Government.

As lockdown measures are relaxing and people consider their back-to-work options, the analysis shows that if people were able to go into work tomorrow, a slightly higher number of people would not feel comfortable doing so than would feel comfortable. 36% said they would not feel comfortable compared with 30% who said they would. The data also shows that 8% of people are already back at work and do not feel comfortable at the moment.

The more employers can do to communicate the steps they are taking to make the workplace safe, the better.
