The system was introduced at Intersec in Dubai, which took place from 12 to 14 January. NATURA Micro forms part of the company’s inert gas systems portfolio and is intended to protect enclosed, small-sized assets.

New Class L created specifically for lithium-ion battery fires

February kicked off with the launch of a new classification for lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery fires. BSI confirmed the update reflects the growing use of Li-ion batteries across the built environment, from large energy storage systems to electric vehicles and personal mobility devices.

Battery storage standard UL 9540A updated with large-scale fire testing

Standards and regulations were also on the mind in terms of fire safety news in March, with UL Standards & Solutions publishing the sixth edition of UL 9540A, adding large-scale fire testing requirements to the standard for evaluating thermal runaway fire propagation in battery energy storage systems.

The new edition was published on 13 March and is described it as a key standard for battery energy storage systems (BESS), including lithium-ion systems.

Philippines launches Fire Prevention Month

Meanwhile, March saw the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) officially launch Fire Prevention Month in the Philippines with an assembly of more than 3,000 people and over 300 vehicles on March 1.

The Manila Bulletin reported that the event was led by BFP chief Director Jesus Fernandez.

The launch brought together BFP personnel, national government agencies, local and barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices, fire volunteers, fire brigades, private partners and non-government organisations.

How BS 5839-1:2025 is reshaping fire alarm best practice

Introduced in 2025, BS 5839-1:2025 replaced the previous 2017 edition, marking a significant evolution in how the fire alarm sector approaches the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire alarm systems in non-domestic buildings. While the standard remains a code of practice rather than a new regulatory requirement, it reflects the growing complexity of connected fire alarm environments and highlights the increasing importance of cyber security alongside fire safety.

As the industry approaches a year since the publication of BS 5839-1:2025, the updated guidance offers valuable lessons on how fire safety and cyber security are becoming increasingly interconnected.

For many years, BS 5839-1 has provided the fire and alarm industry with a framework for good practice. The 2025 revision builds on this by improving fire safety guidance, strengthening detection requirements in higher-risk areas and incorporating lessons learned from major incidents, including Grenfell Tower. The revised code also introduces clearer expectations around documentation, false alarm reduction and protecting vulnerable building occupants.

Key changes for Category L and Category P fire alarm systems

Under BS 5839-1:2025, Category L systems, which prioritise life safety, should use smoke or multi-sensor detectors as the default in sleeping accommodation. Zone plans are now considered essential in multi-zone installations and must be verified for accuracy during maintenance.

For residential care premises, the updated guidance recommends automatic transmission of fire signals to alarm receiving centres, recognising that the absence of remote monitoring is no longer considered acceptable. Meanwhile, Category P systems, designed to protect property, include refreshed guidance on detector positioning around structural obstacles, simplified manual call point distances and enhanced signalling requirements. These include alarm signal transmission within 120 seconds and reporting catastrophic loss of both signalling paths within 31 minutes for dual-path systems.

Why cyber security is now part of fire alarm system design

Perhaps the most significant development within BS 5839-1:2025 is its recognition that fire alarm systems are no longer standalone installations. Modern systems are increasingly integrated into wider building networks, communicate over IP infrastructure and can often be accessed remotely for diagnostics and maintenance.

While these capabilities deliver operational benefits, they also introduce cyber security risks that were largely absent from traditional fire alarm systems. Any system capable of remote access presents the potential for unauthorised interference if appropriate safeguards are not in place.

Historically, engineers were required to attend site to diagnose faults or carry out maintenance. Today’s connected systems allow faster fault identification, earlier notification of issues and, in some cases, remote servicing. However, BS 5839-1:2025 makes it clear that improved functionality must be matched by appropriate security measures.

Although the guidance stops short of mandating specific cyber security controls, it outlines best practice for securing remote access. This includes using secure authentication before connections are established and ensuring equipment used to facilitate remote access is housed within locked cabinets or tamper-resistant enclosures. Whether systems communicate via IP or mobile networks, the revised code reinforces the importance of protecting remote access against unauthorised activity.

Strengthening signalling resilience under BS 5839-1:2025

The updated standard also places greater emphasis on signalling resilience, recognising that reliable communication is fundamental to effective fire protection.

For property protection systems, alarm signals should be transmitted within 120 seconds, while life safety systems are expected to achieve even shorter transmission times due to their higher-risk nature. Dual-path signalling devices must report catastrophic loss of both communication paths within 31 minutes (DP2) for Category P systems, helping ensure faults are detected and escalated promptly.

Dual-path radio systems may be used where they satisfy the reporting requirements for DP2 and DP3. For Category L systems, however, catastrophic failures should be reported within three minutes (DP4), with alarm signals transmitted within 90 seconds. DP3 dual-radio systems should only be used where a documented variation justifies their installation, such as where a fixed IP connection is not technically feasible.

These requirements demonstrate that signalling resilience extends beyond the fire alarm panel itself. As remotely monitored systems become increasingly common, installers are relying more heavily on manufacturers and signalling providers to deliver secure, resilient infrastructure capable of meeting the expectations set out in BS 5839-1:2025.

Training and future resilience

Alongside technological improvements, the revised standard also recognises the importance of ongoing competence. Modern fire alarm systems are active, connected assets that require continual management rather than one-off installation. The guidance recommends that installers invest in continuous professional development to ensure their knowledge evolves alongside increasingly sophisticated systems.

As fire alarm technology continues to become more connected, remotely managed and integrated within wider building management systems, cyber security is no longer a separate consideration. BS 5839-1:2025 demonstrates that protecting connected fire alarm systems now requires both physical and digital resilience. The updated code of practice reflects an industry where fire safety and cyber security are becoming inseparable, requiring manufacturers, installers and building owners to consider both as part of delivering resilient life safety systems.

FireAngel launches Spec+ domestic safety alarms for professional installations

Domestic safety alarms range combines smoke, heat and carbon monoxide protection with flexible interconnection and 10-year battery backup

Domestic safety alarms specialist FireAngel has launched its new Spec+ range, introducing a portfolio of mains-powered smoke, heat, carbon monoxide and multi-sensor alarms designed to simplify installation, improve replacement and support long-term residential fire protection.

Developed for the UK professional market, the Grade D1 alarm range is aimed at installers, landlords, housebuilders and housing providers, with every product featuring a 10-year sealed rechargeable lithium back-up battery and compliance with the requirements of BS 5839-6 for most residential applications.

The Spec+ portfolio includes dedicated smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms, alongside multi-sensor devices that combine smoke, heat and carbon monoxide detection within a single unit. The products have been developed to support changing legislation and evolving domestic safety requirements while providing greater flexibility for residential installations.

FireAngel said the new alarms have been designed to make installation and replacement easier through a practical base plate design, while built-in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity enables up to 50 Spec+ devices to be interconnected wirelessly, via hardwired connections or through a hybrid of both without requiring additional communication modules.

The smoke alarms combine the company’s Thermoptek and UltraSense technologies, which operate in parallel to improve fire detection while reducing nuisance alarms caused by contaminants and everyday household activities. Bug mesh and dust compensation features have also been incorporated to improve product longevity and minimise interference that can lead to false alarms.

Across the range, alarms are designed for a 10-year service life and are backed by a 10-year warranty. FireAngel recommends replacing smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms after 10 years to maintain optimum protection, even if devices continue to function beyond that period.

The Spec+ range includes the SP500 smoke alarm, SP510 heat alarm, SP520 multi-sensor smoke and heat alarm, SP530 multi-sensor heat and carbon monoxide alarm, and the SP540 multi-sensor smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarm. Compatible wireless and hard-wired low-level control units are also available.

All products in the range comply with recognised standards for smoke, heat and carbon monoxide detection, including BS EN 14604, BS 5446-2 and EN 50291-1 where applicable. FireAngel said every alarm is individually tested during manufacture and the range carries third-party SGS certification.

Weber Rescue Systems launches Smart-Force OS

Weber Rescue Systems has unveiled Smart-Force OS at Interschutz 2026, describing the platform as the first digital operating system for hydraulic rescue equipment.

The new system is said to bring together rescue tools, a control app, location services and device management software in one connected platform, designed to support emergency services during operations, training and maintenance.

According to the company, Smart-Force OS enables real-time monitoring of key equipment data, including tool status, pressure readings and battery levels. The platform can also automate the documentation of training exercises and rescue operations, reducing manual processes and helping to minimise potential sources of error.

A key feature of the system is ‘Anti-Theft’, which provides long-lasting protection for rescue equipment. If tampering or unusual behaviour is detected, the device can deactivate automatically. When theft mode is activated, the tool transmits its location at intervals for up to ten days using an internal backup battery and localisation via GPS, Wi-Fi and LTE.

Smart-Force OS also introduces new digital training functions. Exercises can be documented, analysed and reviewed digitally, with force curves, loads and equipment data visualised and supplemented with images, notes or voice recordings. Weber says this will support more transparent and structured learning for rescue teams.

For equipment managers, the platform includes ‘Service’ functions intended to simplify fleet management. These include Auto-Check-In for battery status updates, as well as maintenance checklists and notifications relating to service intervals.

Weber said the launch reflects its aim of making rescue operations faster, safer and more efficient, while easing the workload on emergency services personnel through practical digital innovation.

Alongside the launch, the company has expanded its service offer with new warranty extensions for rescue equipment. The extension can be taken out at the point of purchase or after a service and is available for up to six years. Warranty periods and maintenance statuses are managed centrally through the Weber Rescue Hub.

UK Government invests £100m in wildfire resilience measures ahead of summer

The UK Government has announced a £97 million investment in national resilience assets as part of measures to strengthen wildfire response capability ahead of the summer months.

The funding will support what the Government describes as the largest upgrade of national resilience fire assets in almost 20 years, including new specialist equipment and vehicles for Fire and Rescue Services.

Dedicated off-road appliances will also be introduced to improve access and operational effectiveness in challenging terrain, supporting crews responding to wildfires and other complex incidents.

The new wildfire response teams will be hosted by Fire and Rescue Services in Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Northumberland, London and South Wales.

The teams will be able to deploy to incidents across England from the end of June, providing additional specialist capability during the peak wildfire season.

According to the Government, crews have undergone intensive training in wildfire response techniques, including tactical burning, with firefighters also learning from international colleagues experienced in large-scale wildfire incidents.

Building Safety Minister Samantha Dixon said: “This country benefits from a dedicated Fire and Rescue Service operation and, as incidents continue to evolve in complexity, it’s critical that we back those on the front line with the latest equipment.”

Dixon added: “Last year witnessed some of the most devastating wildfires in our recent history and, as we head into peak season, we’re delivering the resource, training and assets needed to minimise the escalating risk.”

The Fire National Resilience Programme was established following the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 to provide specialist capabilities, personnel and resources for Fire and Rescue Services responding to major national emergencies.

The latest investment will support the modernisation of existing resilience assets and improve the national response to incidents including wildfires, flooding and structural collapse.

National resilience capabilities were deployed more than 1,000 times during 2025, highlighting the increasing demand placed on Fire and Rescue Services and the need to maintain specialist response resources.

WAGNER reveals TITANUS REX aspirating smoke detector

WAGNER has unveiled its new TITANUS REX aspirating smoke detector, introducing the latest generation of its TITANUS product family at the NFPA trade show in Las Vegas.

The VdS-certified detector has been redesigned with a focus on sensitivity, modularity and digitalisation. WAGNER says the system is designed to deliver early fire detection while reducing nuisance alarms and supporting energy-efficient operation.

According to the company, TITANUS REX combines high-level detection performance with resource-efficient operation for modern fire protection applications. Further certifications, including UL and AFNOR, are expected shortly.

Torsten Wagner, Managing Director and Partner of WAGNER Group GmbH, said: “Our new detector module detects even very small smoke particles much earlier and with greater precision. This gives users valuable time to take targeted action in the event of a fire and reliably safeguards their processes.”

At the centre of the system is WAGNER’s new W1 technology, which combines sensitive smoke particle detection with intelligent signal processing. Its LOGIC·SENS PLUS fire pattern recognition system evaluates data against ambient conditions to support early detection and reduce false alarms.

The company says the detector’s specialised sensor technology and energy-efficient components reduce power consumption and allow the power supply to be sized according to operational requirements.

Planning, commissioning and maintenance are supported by connected software tools including TITANUS PipeXpress PLUS and TITANUS ServiceXpress. Wizard-guided workflows are designed to help ensure project planning complies with relevant standards.

TITANUS REX is available in three variants — TITANUS REX 30, TITANUS REX 50 and TITANUS REX 70 — to suit applications ranging from elevator shafts and deep-freeze areas down to -32°C to highly sensitive environments and large hyperscale data centres. Its compact design and quiet operation are intended to support discreet installation across a range of settings.

Following its NFPA debut, WAGNER is also presenting TITANUS REX to European fire safety professionals at FeuerTrutz in Nuremberg this week.

Compact water mist system for rail applications

Wagner Rail has expanded the WAGNER Group’s FirExting portfolio with the launch of Water Mist Compact, a water mist-based fire suppression system for use in passenger areas in railway carriages.

The system is said to provide high efficiency performance with a reduced space requirement and easier integration and maintenance.

Water mist systems work by releasing micro-fine water droplets that evaporate very quickly as mist, drawing heat energy away from a fire. This enables fast, effective, and gentle fire suppression with low water consumption.

“Thanks to their low water consumption, water mist systems cause very little secondary damage, making them ideal for areas where operations need to resume quickly after a fire,” explains Dr. Markus Müller, Managing Director of Wagner Rail.

“Our latest development goes one step further: it is our smallest and lightest water mist system. It can be installed in a more compact space while delivering the same performance. Both planning and integration into the vehicle are simpler than with conventional systems.”

According to Wagner Rail, the compact water mist system houses the water needed for fire suppression and the nitrogen gas required for atomisation in a single container. This is said to eliminate additional components and piping typically found in traditional water mist systems.

This design saves installation space and weight as well as reduces the number of interfaces with the vehicle. It also simplifies planning and execution of the installation process.

After an activation, the system can be replaced quickly as the containers can be kept in stock as compact replacement parts.

The system is claimed to comply with ARGE Part 2 and UNI 11565:2021, suiting it for use internationally. Since the containers can be heated or insulated, this solution is also suitable for demanding applications and operates reliably even at very low temperatures.

“Ultimately, what matters most to operators is a comprehensive package that combines safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness,” Müller adds. “Our technology stands out for its high effectiveness, low impact on the interior, and excellent retrofitability. This makes it ideal for both existing fleets and new vehicle designs.”

Wagner Rail has begun implementing its first projects using the Water Mist Compact system, which will be showcased at InnoTrans in Berlin from September 22 to 25.

Britannia Fire launches P50 Monnex fire extinguisher

Britannia Fire has added to its P50 composite fire extinguisher range with the introduction of Monnex, a specialist, high performance dry powder for high-risk industrial settings.

Monnex powder is non-conductive and rapidly extinguishes Class B (flammable liquids) and Class C (flammable gas) fires. It works differently to standard dry powder, breaking into smaller particles in intense heat which increases its surface area and coverage to extinguish fires quickly and more efficiently.

Britannia Fire’s P50 Monnex fire extinguishers are designed for high-risk sites including petrochemical plants, airports, fuel depots, power stations and manufacturing facilities. They are also particularly suitable for isolated, offshore locations such as ships or oil and gas facilities.

All P50s are environmentally friendly and fully recyclable with a 20-year life span and a 10-year guarantee. Unlike traditional, metal fire extinguishers, they don’t require costly external annual servicing. Instead, simple checks can be carried out by a responsible person.

“High-risk industrial sites need fire protection that performs instantly and reliably in extreme conditions,” said Andy Spence, Managing Director of Britannia Fire. “The launch of our P50 Monnex extinguisher gives operators a specialist solution that delivers rapid knock-down on flammable liquid and gas fires, while also reducing long term maintenance and environmental impact.”

A model certified to the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) is also available, which includes the required Schrader valve for equipment used on ships, offshore platforms and marine installations.

“The MED approved P50 Monnex is ideal for offshore environments, where conditions are harsher and regulations are stricter,” added Spence. “The P50 doesn’t corrode like traditional metal extinguishers and is much more durable. It also doesn’t require annual servicing, something that’s historically been very difficult and costly in these hard-to-reach sites. The Schrader valve allows easy pressure checks and re-pressurisation.”

Stat-X condensed aerosol systems receive marine certification

Fireaway has announced that its Stat-X condensed aerosol fire-extinguishing systems have received type approval from Bureau Veritas following evaluation in accordance with MSC.1/Circ.1270.

The approvals are supported by three certificates covering the global market, the European Union and the United Kingdom, enabling application in SOLAS-regulated marine environments across global, EU-flagged and UK-flagged vessels.

The Bureau Veritas Type Approval Certificate confirms that Stat-X systems satisfy the requirements of SOLAS 74, as amended, the FSS Code, the 1994 and 2000 HSC Codes, and IMO MSC.1/Circ.1270.

An EC Type Examination Certificate was issued under the EU Marine Equipment Directive 2014/90/EU, supporting the wheelmark pathway for EU-flagged vessels. A UK Type-Examination Certificate was issued by Bureau Veritas under the Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Regulations 2025, authorised by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency.

“This approval confirms that Stat-X systems meet defined evaluation criteria for use in marine applications subject to SOLAS requirements,” said Lance Harry, P.E., President and CEO of Fireaway: “It also reflects the structured process through which performance validation, technical assessment and certification come together in practice.”

The approval covers 15 generator models across the E-series, which uses electrical activation, and the T-series, which uses thermal activation, both of which were evaluated for enclosed marine machinery spaces.

Vessel-specific installations remain subject to review and authorisation by classification societies and flag administrations in line with project-specific conditions.

Stat-X condensed aerosol systems are designed for enclosed and special-hazard environments where compact, electrically non-conductive suppression solutions are required. The systems can be applied across marine spaces including machinery compartments, control cabinets and auxiliary equipment enclosures.

KiddeFenwal showcases BESS fire protection solution

KiddeFenwal is using two major fire safety events to highlight a multi-layered fire protection approach designed for battery energy storage systems (BESS), as the sector faces increasing scrutiny over the risks associated with lithium-ion battery installations.
