STI expands launch of G3 and GF push buttons to EMEA

Safety Technology International (STI) has introduced its G3 and GF push button series across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), following their earlier deployment in the United States.

According to STI, the new series is designed for fire, access control and intrusion systems and was first showcased at Intersec 2025.

STI reported that early adopters include major infrastructure projects in the Middle East, such as airports and stadiums.

Visual accountability through integrated camera technology

The company stated that a defining feature of the G3 and GF range is an optional built-in IP camera designed to support visual identification and accountability.

STI said the camera provides eye-level footage of individuals interacting with the device, which it explained helps address limitations of overhead CCTV in capturing identifying features when hats or hoods are worn.

It added that the camera captures footage before, during and after button activation, which supports incident analysis and helps deter misuse.

Fire and security applications with regional compliance

STI explained that the G3 is suitable for access control and security use, while the GF is intended for fire alarm integration.

Both devices are made from impact-resistant polycarbonate and offer operational variants such as Momentary, Key-to-Reset and Turn-to-Reset.

Protective covers, available with or without built-in sounders, comply with recommendations in BS 5839-1:2017, which advises the use of covers to reduce false alarms.

STI confirmed that the GF model is UL-listed, a factor it noted is particularly relevant to the Middle East, where UL certification is commonly required for fire safety systems.

Supporting UK site readiness and Martyn’s Law compliance

The company highlighted that the introduction of the G3 and GF series aligns with new requirements under the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, known as Martyn’s Law.

According to STI, the optional IP camera can support documentation requirements under the law by capturing footage that aids incident detection, lockdown activation and evacuation planning.

It added that these capabilities may assist venues in demonstrating efforts to improve site readiness and reduce vulnerability to potential threats.

The legislation is currently in its implementation phase.

Technical specifications and industry response

STI confirmed that the G3 model uses a DPDT (2 Form C) switch and the GF uses an SPDT (Form C) switch, both rated for 30 VAC/VDC at 5 A.

It stated that the optional IP camera supports a 180-degree diagonal view, 5MP resolution at 30 frames per second, and is powered via 12VDC.

The company said that feedback from Intersec attendees in the Middle East has been positive, with security professionals expressing interest in the products’ potential to reduce call point misuse and improve alarm management.

However, this equipment is often at risk of misuse, accidental damage, theft, and vandalism, which can undermine its effectiveness during emergencies.

False fire alarms pose significant problems for emergency services and building occupants.

In England, up to June 2020, there were 15,563 false fire alarms due to accidental and careless activation of devices like manual call points, and 3,019 false alarms caused by malicious activations.

Industry standards recommend measures to reduce false alarms.

BS 5839-1:2017 advises that all manual call points should be fitted with protective covers that must be moved to gain access to the activation element.

This measure can significantly reduce accidental and malicious activations.

Following these recommendations in 2017, malicious false fire alarms in England fell by 12%.

These covers provide a barrier that deters accidental activation while allowing quick access in emergencies.

Enhancing emergency exit door safety

Regulatory guidelines emphasise that emergency exits must be easily and immediately operable by anyone who may need to use them in an emergency.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 specifies that emergency doors must not be locked or fastened in a way that impedes escape.

To address this issue, STI developed the Exit Stopper®, a door alarm designed to prevent unauthorised use of emergency exits.

When the protected door is opened, the alarm emits a loud warning signal, alerting staff or security personnel.

The device features deterrent messages on its faceplate, reminding that the door is for emergency use only.

Fire door compliance and protection measures

It is common for fire doors to be improperly held open, compromising their purpose.

Statistics indicate that a significant number of premises have issues with fire doors being wedged open; for instance, 64% of premises visited by the Fire Service had improperly propped-open fire doors.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 assigns responsibility for fire safety to a “Responsible Person” within the organisation, who must ensure that fire doors are regularly checked and maintained.

Failure to comply can result in legal action, fines, or imprisonment.

In 2010, a landlord was fined and jailed after a tenant nearly died in a blaze, partly due to fire doors being wedged open.

STI provides monitoring devices like the Exit Stopper.

This device alerts when a fire door is opened or left open, emitting an audible warning to prompt closure.

Some models allow for adjustable delays, accommodating situations where the door needs to remain open briefly for operational reasons.

By installing these monitoring devices, organisations can prevent the improper use of fire doors, maintaining the integrity of fire compartments and reducing the potential spread of fire and smoke.

It also aids in meeting regulatory requirements and avoiding legal consequences.

Preventing fire extinguisher misuse and theft

Fire extinguishers are essential for immediate response to small fires.

However, they are often subject to misuse, theft, or neglect.

Improper handling can render extinguishers unavailable during emergencies or cause malfunction.

Regulations require that fire extinguishers be readily accessible and properly maintained.

Misuse can lead to legal penalties.

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 mandates that appropriate firefighting equipment must be provided where there is any risk of fire.

Despite advice that extinguishers should be mounted on walls or placed in stands to discourage movement, they are frequently moved or used improperly.

Misuse can pose risks to the environment and nearby individuals.

The Health and Safety at Work etc.

Act 1974 makes the misuse of an extinguisher in the workplace an offense that can result in prosecution.

STI’s Extinguisher Stopper® provides a solution to protect fire extinguishers from misuse and theft.

The device consists of a tamper-proof alarm that activates when the extinguisher is moved from its designated position.

A PVC-coated metal cable secures the extinguisher, and removing it triggers a loud alarm of 95/105 dB.

Addressing accidental activation with Safety Technology International

Safety Technology International Marketing Manager Liam Hunt discusses the introduction of protective covers contributing to long-term decline in false fire alarms

Recent Home Office research and analysis of ‘trends in fire false alarms and fire alarm policies’ reported a decline in false fire alarms caused by malicious or accidental activation of manual call points due to the introduction of protective covers.

Still every false fire alarm remains costly, disrupting schools and businesses, placing unnecessary strain on our emergency services, and reducing the public’s faith in fire alarms.

Continuing to be the largest incident type, false fire alarms accounted for 42% of the incidents attended by fire and rescue services in England year ending September 2023 – fires accounted for 24%.

Home Office figures show that there was a total of 3,030 false fire alarms caused by the “malicious activation of [a] fire call point/alarm” in England during the 12-month period, surpassing challenged hoax calls as the largest reason for malicious false alarms.

Accidental activation remained a significant contributor, 15,609 false alarms were recorded due to the accidental and careless activation of life safety devices, including manual call points. With similar figures reflected across the UK, over £1 billion is lost every year due to false alarms.

To recoup this cost, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service joined the London Fire Brigade in recovering costs from hospitals, airport and student halls with a poor false alarm record. 

Dangerously, false fire alarms divert fire crews away from real emergencies; creating unnecessary risk as crews travel at high speed to attend ‘emergency’ calls. The ‘crying wolf’ factor caused by frequent false alarms causes staff to become complacent and less willing to act quickly when an alarm activates.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service recently changed the way its firefighters respond to automatic fire alarms in commercial premises to reduce unnecessary call outs from unwanted fire alarm signals.

However, the reduction of unwanted fire alarm signals to fire and rescue services does not necessarily reduce false fire alarms and therefore may leave fire safety issues unaddressed. This may not only lead to disruption for businesses, but also to alarm fatigue for the occupants – conversely, successfully reducing false alarms will also reduce unwanted fire alarm signals.

Repeated false alarms reduce the public’s confidence in fire alarms, contributing to alarm fatigue and a complacent attitude toward evacuations. Alarm fatigue occurs when a person becomes desensitised to an alarm due to repeated false alarms and consequently fails to react appropriately in a real emergency.

As recommended in BS 5839-1:2017, manual call points can be fitted with a protective cover to prevent false fire alarms. The British Standard Institute recommends in section 20.2b, that: “All MCPs should be fitted with a protective cover, which is moved to gain access to the frangible element. It is now recommended that a protective cover is fitted to a Type A manual call point to help prevent false alarms.”

Consequently, Home Office research examining the long-term trends in false fire alarms found that the introduction of protective covers was a contributing factor in the decline of false fire alarms caused by malicious or accidental activation of manual call points.

Extinguishing neglect with Safety Technology International

Safety Technology International Marketing Manager Liam Hunt looks at why fire extinguisher misuse is a threat to fire safety in the UAE

Fire extinguishers are a vital piece of the Active Fire Protection puzzle; often the first line of defence they are integral to preventing costly fire damage and ultimately, loss of life.

The importance of fire extinguishers is highlighted in Chapter 4 of the UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice: “Portable Fire Extinguishers are the best available first response to table the fire at its incipient stage.”

The Code of Practice adds that to ensure this first aid response, fire extinguishers shall be “kept in their designated places at all times when they are not being used” and “conspicuously located where they will be readily accessible and immediately available in the event of fire.”

However, the misuse and neglect of fire extinguishers and their accessories in Dubai’s buildings is not uncommon, rendering them inaccessible or ineffective in a real emergency.

As part of the Office of the UAE Attorney General’s ongoing campaign to increase the public’s level of awareness of the law, it was announced that fines and even jail sentences would be handed down for fire extinguisher misuse.

The office states in Article 311 of the Federal Penal code, that: “Any person who removes a fire extinguisher or changes its location or renders it unfit for use shall be punished by a jail sentence for no less than one year or a fine of not less than 50,000 AED.”

With requirements for extinguishers to be installed near doors or exits, it is all too tempting for fire extinguishers to be used as temporary doorstops.

Seeking to improve airflow, the removal of fire extinguishers to wedge open doors threatens to undermine fire safety, making the extinguisher difficult to locate in an emergency.

Safety Technology International (STI), a leading company in the field of safety equipment, has made a significant donation to a local care farm charity, Wildgoose Rural Training. This gesture comes at a time when the charity is grappling with the issue of false alarms. The donation of protective covers aims to help alleviate this issue.

About Wildgoose Rural Training

Located in Hallow, near Worcester, Wildgoose Rural Training is a charitable care farm that provides support to adults and young people with various learning disabilities. Since its inception in 2000, the care farm has grown considerably, now occupying a 42-acre site with a 6-acre thriving farm. Here, students from diverse backgrounds are offered the chance to learn various skills ranging from horticulture and animal care, to woodworking, arts, and crafts, as well as engaging in conservation work.

Addressing the issue of false alarms

Unfortunately, the centre recently experienced a series of false alarms instigated by one of their students. These false alarms led to frequent and unnecessary evacuations, causing distress to students, especially those with sensory sensitivity and hearing issues. In response to these events, the team at Wildgoose reached out to STI for a solution.

STI’s contribution to the solution

STI suggested the use of call point covers with sounder alarms to dissuade the student from triggering the fire alarm. These protective covers were installed promptly over the call points in the main building, preventing further tampering with the fire alarm system while preserving its functionality in case of an emergency.

Jim Hidderley, Managing Director of Wildgoose Rural Training Centre, expressed his gratitude: “The call point covers provided by STI have reduced our regular false fire alarms from a weekly occurrence down to 0.
