Flir to unveil new thermal camera at Interschutz 2026

Flir has announced a landmark expansion of its firefighting portfolio at Interschutz 2026 -hall 27 booth M42.

Headlining the launch is the Flir K85-N, the first thermal imaging camera (TIC) on the market to achieve full certification under the new NFPA 1930:2025 standard.

The company explained that the K85-N arrives as the successor to the industry-standard K65, offering a rugged, fresh design paired with significant leaps in sensor performance.

Featuring a 640×480 resolution and a ground-breaking single-range architecture, the K85-N ensures firefighters maintain high-fidelity visibility without the lag or image degradation typically associated with switching between temperature modes.

“Previously unreachable”

Benjamin Mortlock, Team Lead at Flir stated: “In high-stress environments, clarity is the difference between a successful mission and a tragedy.

“The K85-N is engineered so that crews never miss critical scene information.

“With its enhanced contrast and dedicated modes for search and detection, we are providing a level of situational awareness that was previously unreachable,” Mortlock added.

A unified ecosystem

Beyond the K85-N, Flir highlighted that it is introducing updated 2026 versions of its proven K75 and K85 cameras.

These models benefit from a revised optical design and a lower f-number, significantly improving image clarity in low-contrast environments.

According to Flir, the 2026 K-Series features:

  • Standardised Ergonomics: A new compact battery and enhanced grip aligned with the K85-N platform
  • Advanced Connectivity: Integration with the Flir Responder mobile app, enabling wireless streaming, over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates, and simplified post-incident analysis
  • Rapid Deployment: A newly engineered in-truck charger featuring a ‘insert, twist, lock’ mechanism for faster, more reliable handling in high-pressure scenarios

“Keeps the focus where it belongs”

Peter Dekkers, Business Development Director at Flir commented: “Our goal for 2026 was standardisation and serviceability.”

“Whether a department is using the NFPA-certified K85-N or the updated K75, the interface, batteries and charging infrastructure remain consistent.

“This reduces training friction and keeps the focus where it belongs: on the fireground,” he concluded.

“Mystery” Reveal at Stand

Flir teased about an exclusive, unannounced development that will remain under wraps until the exhibition doors open.

This “booth-only” reveal is expected to showcase a new frontier in first-responder safety technology.

In an effort to streamline the inspection process of numerous fittings and connections in oil and gas facilities, an increasing number of these facilities are now turning towards Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) cameras from Teledyne FLIR, according to the company.

The ground-breaking G-series OGI cameras grant operatives the ability to quickly locate and reliably detect invisible gas emissions.

A notable feature of these latest models is their ability to provide enhanced and rapid documentation of gas leaks. This helps in averting the loss of product and revenue, potential fines and safety hazards.

Spectral response technology makes invisible gases visible, aids precise quantification

The G-series OGI cameras by Teledyne FLIR use an advanced technology which utilises an infrared camera matching spectral responses to specific gases.

This technology is ideal for offshore platforms, LNG shipping terminals, oil refineries, natural gas wellheads and processing plants.

The FLIR G-series cooled-core OGI cameras render invisible gases visible, while also allowing precise quantification.

The Gx320, G620 and Gx620 cameras are particularly efficient in detecting methane and hydrocarbon emissions from oil and gas production, transportation and processing facilities.

In total, the technology allows operatives to detect nearly 400 different gases.

This can result in surveying large areas up to nine times faster than traditional methods, thereby enabling early leak detection and emissions reduction.

New touchscreen features and connectivity options revolutionise gas emission detection and reporting

In line with their commitment to continuous improvement, Teledyne FLIR has recently enhanced the G-series range with several new features.

The addition of an LCD touchscreen allows users to make annotations directly on the camera, like drawing arrows or circles, or leaving comments. Additionally, the company has integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities into the cameras.

Operatives can now automatically upload and store saved images and videos to the FLIR Ignite cloud software directly from the field. This technology can also connect to a third-party app, enabling operatives to share captured content with colleagues around the world.

This significant advancement in the oil and gas industry not only improves efficiency in locating and mitigating fugitive emissions but also aids in their documentation and reporting.

Testing camouflage with state-of-the-art thermal imaging

Through a custom rig built by TVR using thermal imaging cameras, BCB International is able to test their latest and most advanced camouflage netting.

The focus here is to observe what appears under thermography and how effective the netting is.

To achieve this, three different thermal imaging cameras are utilised, each operating at different wavelengths: a shortwave, medium wave and long wave application.

The approach streamlines critical testing in both lab and field environments, detecting anomalies from -45°C to 70°C.

Rigorous quality control: Ensuring camouflage withstands extreme conditions

BCB’s range of high-tech camouflage materials is designed to be fire-resistant with anti-thermal properties, concealing troops and equipment in almost any environment.

To ensure this, BCB collaborated with TVR in a closed environment, with the thermal imaging rig set up at a distance of 10 metres.

Andrew Howell, Managing Director of BCB International, elaborated: “We need to see what shows up by thermal imaging so we can see what accurately conceals and what doesn’t – and for this, we use thermography.”

Matthew Clavey, Director of Thermal Vision Research, added: “Whether the camouflage netting is being deployed over a tank or over artillery or supplies, they’ll invariably have different wavelength requirements.

“This is why it’s so important to test the heat emissivity of different materials across the spectrum of thermographic wavelengths.”

Teledyne FLIR debuts SIRAS Drone for search and rescue operations

Teledyne FLIR, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, has announced the launch of SIRAS, a professional drone that includes a quick-connect dual radiometric thermal and visible camera payload.

Engineered for data security, performance, and affordability, SIRAS is optimised for use in industrial and utility inspection, public safety, firefighting, and search and rescue missions.

The IP-54-rated aircraft features a 31-minute flight time, radar-based front collision avoidance, and backpack portability, so professional UAV pilots can fly safely when and where the mission demands. The included Vue TV128 payload features a quick-connect gimbal, which provides imagery compatible with FLIR Thermal Studio and leading third-party photogrammetry applications.

The drone’s 16 mega pixel visible camera can zoom 128x to pinpoint details ,whilst the integrated 640×512 pixel, radiometric Boson provides thermal imagery, 5x digital zoom, and temperature-measurement of every pixel in the scene.

Taking only one minute to start up, pilots can get eyes on the scene quickly and maintain control via a dual-band radio (2.4/5.8 GHz) connection, while hot swappable batteries ensure efficient operation.

To improve data security, SIRAS stores imagery on an onboard SD card and does not include cloud connection capability. Pilots are also not required to create an online profile, increasing ease of use and reducing potential unintended online data access. 

Mike Walters, vice president, product management, Teledyne FLIR, said: “Designed to provide pilots with flexibility to get the job done, SIRAS delivers a geofence-free flight experience with thermal and visible imaging capabilities at $9,695 USD.

The SIRAS aircraft was designed in collaboration with and is manufactured by Coretronic Intelligent Robotics Corporation (CIRC) in Taiwan, a subsidiary of Coretronic Group. Final payload integration and quality control are completed in the USA. 

“SIRAS is the only enterprise drone to currently incorporate the patented MSX technology, which overlays the edge detail from the visible camera on the thermal image to provide critical information in real time.”
