Bridger Aerospace selects TracPlus to support aerial firefighting fleet performance

Bridger Aerospace has selected FireFlyte, powered by TracPlus, to provide automated mission recording and fleet-wide operational insight as wildfire risks continue to rise.

The aerial firefighting operator will use the platform to build a detailed operational picture of each mission, capturing aircraft position, timing, firefighting mode and drop-line data from take-off to landing.

The system is designed to help Bridger assess how each aircraft performs on every deployment, including where drops are made in relation to the fire perimeter and how suppression activity develops as conditions change.

According to TracPlus, the data is captured once at source rather than reconstructed afterwards, with an Aerial Firefighting Report generated for each mission.

The agreement covers Bridger’s fleet, including six CL-415EAF Super Scoopers, which can draw up to 1,412 gallons of water per pass, as well as Air Attack and Multi-Mission aircraft, Pilatus PC-12s, King Air 350s and Daher Kodiaks fitted with imaging and infrared systems.

TracPlus has published a new white paper examining how aerial agencies can manage the adoption of artificial intelligence with transparency and accountability.

The document, titled AI Makes the Call. Who Answers for It?, provides an industry-informed perspective on the increasing role of automated systems in fire operations.

TracPlus is an operational data infrastructure provider that monitors more than 2,500 wildfire suppression aircraft across 44 countries.

The paper identifies that AI systems are already influencing how decisions are made while governance structures are still in a state of evolution.

National agencies including CAL FIRE, New Zealand’s Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) and Australia’s national aerial firefighting program use the platform as their system of record.

The infrastructure holds more than a billion flight records and collects approximately one million new operational data points every day.

Research indicates that the reliability of these tools depends on the quality and visibility of the underlying data.

TracPlus leadership change takes effect in May

TracPlus has appointed Todd O’Hara as Chief Executive Officer, with the change taking effect on 1 May 2026.

TracPlus announced the appointment on 17 April 2026 from Auckland, New Zealand.

John O’Hara, Chief Executive Officer since 2024, will become President and will continue to lead strategic partnerships and senior agency relationships.

The company described the move as the conclusion of a six-month leadership transition.

Todd O’Hara has served as Chief Commercial Officer and has been part of the TracPlus executive team since 2020.

The announcement states that he led the company through a period of expansion that included the onboarding of CAL FIRE and the rollout of the FireFlyte solution.

His previous leadership roles included positions at Spidertracks and Airways New Zealand.

He also served earlier with the New Zealand Defence Force.

TracPlus said O’Hara is a pilot and flight instructor rated across helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft and gliders.

TracPlus executive Todd O’Hara discusses the major challenges highlighted at UAFA 2025 and outlines how agencies are using data, technology and modernised systems to improve aerial wildfire response

The United Aerial Firefighters Association (UAFA) held its 2025 Annual Conference in Boise, Idaho, bringing together aerial firefighting operators, agency leaders and technology providers to examine the state of aerial wildfire operations in the United States.

The programme focused on operational readiness, technology modernisation, workforce issues and the rapid evolution of mission intelligence solutions shaping the sector’s future.

Following the event, International Fire and Safety Journal spoke with Todd O’Hara, Chief Product and Revenue Officer at TracPlus, about the themes that dominated this year’s discussions and the role of integrated, real-time data during complex wildfire response.

What are the key themes or challenges that shaped discussions at this year’s UAFA Conference, particularly around aerial firefighting operations?

One major theme is the reality that a lot of aviation and aerial firefighting systems are decades old.

In many cases, the people who built them are no longer around, and the institutional knowledge has gone with them.

That contributes to inefficiencies, data gaps and weaker mission outcomes.

A second theme is the need for real-time operational intelligence.

Agencies need cleaner, more actionable data so they can coordinate better, reduce waste and respond more effectively in high-stakes environments.

Safety and accident prevention is another big focus.

Accidents almost never happen “out of the blue”, there is usually a pattern or chain of events leading up to them.

With the right tools, you can surface non-compliant behaviour before something goes wrong, and that safety lens is part of a lot of discussions.

How is TracPlus evolving its platform to support decision-making and crew safety during complex wildfire response efforts?

We have evolved from our roots as a hardware tracking provider to a SaaS-first company focused on delivering operational intelligence at scale.

A key step in that evolution is FireFlyte, our enterprise platform for aerial firefighting agencies and operators.

We can support fire management operations of all sizes around the world, but FireFlyte, the underlying platform that drives CATIS, positions us to work effectively with large, complex US agencies in a few specific ways.

It helps move them off legacy systems and manual processes.

It supports standardisation on a cloud-based platform.

It enables mission-critical operations to scale across multiple bases and fleets.

Thinking about the conversations we had at UAFA, there’s a general agreement that this is the direction everyone wants to go. Everyone wants to find ways to achieve better outcomes, and we can see a path forward where a foundation based on FireFlyte can modernise other US programmes over time.

From your perspective, where are agencies and operators seeing the most value from real-time tracking and mission intelligence data?

There are a few clear areas where value shows up quickly.

One is operational coordination and efficiency, because cleaner, more actionable data improves coordination, reduces waste and makes resource deployment more effective.

Another is visibility into operations and outcomes.

A lot of the market has historically been “dots on a map”, but the bigger shift is towards understanding mission outcomes, resource utilisation and operational patterns.

Safety is also a major value area.

Using data to identify non-compliant behaviour and risk indicators before they lead to incidents is where data becomes genuinely lifesaving.

Finally, there is proactive decision-making.

With the depth of historical and real-time data we have, agencies can start to anticipate resource needs and optimise deployments based on how a mission is evolving, not just what has already happened.

In short, the most value is where data directly supports coordination, safety and faster, better decisions in the field.

What emerging operational or technological trends should wildfire agencies be preparing for over the next few seasons?

One trend is the shift from basic tracking to full operational intelligence.

The move is from “where is the aircraft?” to “how effective are we being?”, with an emphasis on mission effectiveness, patterns and utilisation, not just positions.

A second trend is proactive mission planning.

Using historical and real-time data, plus machine learning and AI, agencies can move from reactive to proactive operations by anticipating resource requirements, optimising deployment strategies and identifying challenges before they affect the mission.

Integrated safety and compliance tools are also becoming more important, including real-time safety monitoring, automated compliance reporting and stronger documentation for operational accountability and regulatory requirements.

There is also the continued modernisation of legacy systems.

Many agencies will need to replace decades-old, manually driven systems with modern, cloud-based platforms

The overarching theme is that the agencies who will lead over the next few seasons are the ones that treat technology and data as the foundation of operational excellence, not just as a supporting tool.

CAL FIRE modernises wildfire aviation management with TracPlus system

California integrates new wildfire aviation tracking system

TracPlus has announced a partnership with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to introduce a new aviation management system designed to enhance wildfire firefighting efforts.

According to TracPlus, the CAL FIRE Aviation Tracking and Information System (CATIS) replaces CAL FIRE’s previous in-house platform with a software-based solution developed to support faster data handling and improved situational awareness.

TracPlus stated that CATIS is powered by its FireFlyte software and is intended to support CAL FIRE’s operational needs as the 2025 wildfire season approaches.

TracPlus launches new technology for aerial firefighting

TracPlus has unveiled a “world-first” new product for aerial firefighters that will automate the time-consuming collecting and reporting of data now required to satisfy new industry standards.

National Aerial Firefighting Centre of Australia’s (NAFC) OPS-14 Standards now state that operators must accurately collect and report volume collected and dropped, engine starts and stops, and take-offs and landings.

For rotary aircraft, TracPlus said its AFDAU-T1 product removes the need for manual calibration of a bucket, meaning that no pilot interaction is required, even when swapping buckets in a slung load configuration.

For fixed-wing operators, the organisation said the device automatically detects operational data for reporting – including proof of substantive flow from a hopper.

The new tech was produced in collaboration with Sydney-based engineers Aircraft Maintenance Solutions.

“Our goal was to bring a dedicated aerial firefighting data acquisition unit to the market that had been designed to meet the NAFC event reporting contract requirements,” said AFDAU-T1’s lead engineer, Zane Vohland.

“With AFDAU-T1, operators don’t need to worry about data accuracy. They will have peace of mind that their data is reliable, automatic and accurate.”

TracPlus was founded in 2007 and its varied client list worldwide also includes Californian forest fire protection department CalFire and San Diego Gas & Electric.

Previously, Australian Aviation reported that TracPlus secured $5 million of funding from Kiwi tech fund Movac.

As part of the deal, the firm will acquire Cambridge-based v2track, which already supplies it with tracking devices.

Chief executive Trevor McIntyre said, “We had a number of funding options, and we chose Movac due to their investment style and ‘hands-on’ experience in growing successful tech companies.

“It was also really important to us that there was a strong personality fit between the two teams.”

TracPlus staff have already switched to working from home during the coronavirus crisis to allow clients such as aeromedical charity RACQ LifeFlight Air Ambulance to continue flying.

McIntyre said, “We have implemented measures to do what we can to support our operators who are at the face of COVID-19, keeping their teams safe, continuing to provide tracking, 24-hour distress and emergency monitoring to ensure operators can stay in touch with their people.”
