Bordeaux wildfires force thousands to evacuate as firefighters battle to contain flames

Firefighters are continuing efforts to contain wildfires across the Gironde region in south-west France as extreme weather conditions fuel one of the country’s most serious wildfire emergencies in recent years.

Driven by a combination of extreme heat, prolonged drought and strong winds, the fires have spread rapidly through areas of dry vegetation and pine forest, forcing mass evacuations and placing communities across the region on alert.

Here’s what we know so far about the Bordeaux wildfires.

Where are the Bordeaux wildfires?

The largest fires are burning in the Gironde department, west of Bordeaux, where extensive areas of pine forest have provided significant fuel for the flames.

Authorities have reported that the main fire front has moved to within around 15 kilometres of the Bordeaux metropolitan area. Several nearby communities have been evacuated.

How many people have been evacuated?

More than 250,000 have been evacuated across the Gironde region as the fires have intensified.

How large is the fire?

Authorities estimate that approximately 42,000 hectares of land have been affected by the fires.

The combination of dry vegetation, resin-rich pine forests and strong winds is said to have allowed the flames to spread quickly.

Firefighting response

More than 2,500 firefighters have been deployed, supported by water-bombing aircraft, helicopters and military resources.

France has also received assistance from European partners as crews work to slow the spread of the fires, defend homes and critical infrastructure and prevent further expansion towards populated areas.

The scale of the response highlights the growing challenge posed by wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires, where fast-moving vegetation fires increasingly threaten communities, businesses and essential infrastructure.

What is causing the fires?

Authorities have linked the severity of the fires to a combination of prolonged drought, exceptionally high temperatures and strong winds, creating conditions where fires can ignite and spread rapidly.

While investigations into the causes of individual fires are ongoing, officials have warned that weather conditions remain the biggest challenge for firefighting operations.

Forecasters expect temperatures to remain high this week, with parts of south-west France approaching 40°C. Any increase in wind speed could further accelerate the spread of active fire fronts.

Travel disruption

The wildfires have caused widespread disruption across the Gironde region.

Several roads have been closed, with travellers advised to check the latest transport updates before setting out. Bordeaux Airport remains operational, although precautionary measures have been introduced in surrounding areas.

Government response

French President Emmanuel Macron has chaired crisis meetings as the government coordinates the national response to the wildfire emergency.

Emergency services remain on heightened alert, with additional resources deployed to protect communities and critical infrastructure as conditions continue to change.

A growing challenge for fire and rescue services

The Bordeaux wildfires are part of a wider wildfire crisis affecting several countries across southern Europe.

For fire and rescue services, the incident highlights the increasing operational challenges created by prolonged heatwaves, drought and more extreme fire behaviour. It also reinforces the need for robust wildfire preparedness, effective inter-agency coordination, aerial firefighting capability and stronger protection for communities located at the wildland-urban interface.

With hot and dry conditions expected to continue, firefighters face a challenging task in containing the fires and preventing further destruction in the days ahead.

Bridger Aerospace and TracPlus integrate aerial firefighting data into IGNIS wildfire platform

Bridger Aerospace has partnered with TracPlus to bring real-time aerial firefighting data into its IGNIS wildfire intelligence platform, giving incident teams a unified view of aircraft activity and suppression efforts on the fireline.

Bridger Aerospace Group Holdings, Inc., one of the United States’ leading aerial firefighting companies, said the integration will combine TracPlus’ aircraft and mission data with Bridger’s wildfire intelligence software to support wildland firefighting operations.

TracPlus’ real-time aircraft position, aviation intelligence, and drop event data will be integrated directly into Bridger’s IGNIS platform. The companies said the collaboration is expected to give firefighters, aviation teams, and incident managers a single live operating picture, helping them see where aircraft are working, where suppression activity has taken place, and how those actions affect the wider incident environment.

The integration aligns with calls for more connected and interoperable wildfire technology as response operations become increasingly data driven. Bridger Aerospace and TracPlus said linking the two platforms is intended to reduce information silos and help ground crews and air assets work from the same picture of resources, aircraft activity, and suppression progress.

Bridger Aerospace selects TracPlus to support aerial firefighting fleet performance

Bridger Aerospace has selected FireFlyte, powered by TracPlus, to provide automated mission recording and fleet-wide operational insight as wildfire risks continue to rise.

The aerial firefighting operator will use the platform to build a detailed operational picture of each mission, capturing aircraft position, timing, firefighting mode and drop-line data from take-off to landing.

The system is designed to help Bridger assess how each aircraft performs on every deployment, including where drops are made in relation to the fire perimeter and how suppression activity develops as conditions change.

According to TracPlus, the data is captured once at source rather than reconstructed afterwards, with an Aerial Firefighting Report generated for each mission.

The agreement covers Bridger’s fleet, including six CL-415EAF Super Scoopers, which can draw up to 1,412 gallons of water per pass, as well as Air Attack and Multi-Mission aircraft, Pilatus PC-12s, King Air 350s and Daher Kodiaks fitted with imaging and infrared systems.

Navy Shore Enterprise announces 2025 Fire and Emergency Services Award winners

Commander, Navy Installations Command has announced the Calendar Year 2025 Navy Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) Award winners, recognising fire and emergency personnel across the Navy Shore Enterprise for operational excellence and mission support.

The awards highlight teams and individuals responsible for emergency response across U.S. Navy installations worldwide, including structural fire suppression, aircraft rescue, hazardous materials containment and emergency medical response. According to the command, these capabilities are central to maintaining readiness across shore installations and supporting fleet operations.

By carrying out life-saving medical interventions and rapid emergency response operations, Navy F&ES teams help ensure that bases remain operational so that naval forces can train, deploy and conduct missions.

“Our personnel are the cornerstone of base resilience,” said CAPT Bill Lane, deputy director of CNIC operations. “Protecting our people and our tactical assets is essential for projecting power from the Shore Enterprise. These winners represent the best of the best in ensuring our mission remains uninterrupted.”

From this year’s recipients, three Navy representatives advanced to top honours in broader military competition at the Department of War (DoW) level: Naval Support Activity Annapolis; Katsuhiro Watanabe of Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka; and Metro San Diego, a regional fire and emergency services organisation covering Naval Base San Diego, Naval Base Coronado, Naval Base Point Loma, and Naval Air Station North Island.

The awards span multiple categories recognising performance across different installation sizes and specialties.

Navy Shore Enterprise awards in full

In the Small Fire Department of the Year category, Naval Support Activity Annapolis received the DoW-level award, with Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay named runner-up. For Medium Fire Department of the Year, Naval Station Mayport was selected as winner, followed by Joint Region Marianas.

Metro San Diego FES earned the Large Fire Department of the Year award, with Navy Region Northwest as runner-up. Joint Region Marianas was also recognised for Fire Prevention Program of the Year, alongside Navy Region Mid-Atlantic District 3, Naval Air Station Oceana, and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek–Fort Story as runners-up.

Individual awards highlighted firefighters, officers, instructors and emergency medical personnel across the fleet. ABH2(AW) Kiara Robin of Naval Station Rota was named Military Firefighter of the Year runner-up, while ABH2(AW/SW) Joshua Acuna of Metro San Diego was also recognised. Civilian Firefighter of the Year went to Katsuhiro Watanabe of Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka (DoW winner), with Ahmed Dakail of Naval Support Activity Bahrain named runner-up.

Other honours included ABH1(AW/SW) Leaundre Johnson of Naval Support Activity Naples as Military Fire Officer of the Year winner, and Eric Boggess of Naval Station Mayport as Civilian Fire Officer of the Year winner. Additional categories recognised training, inspection, EMS provision, and fire prevention leadership across multiple installations.

The Navy also recognised legacy contributors to the Fire and Emergency Services community through Hall of Fame inductions. Inductees included retired fire chiefs and senior leaders such as Ruben Perez, Edward Stillwell, David Inman, William Casey, Kenneth Snyder, and Jack Woodard (deceased), reflecting long-term service across multiple regions.

Lifetime Achievement Awards were also presented to senior leaders including Rodolfo Gonzales, William Killen, Christopher Connelly, and Daniel Gaumont, acknowledging decades of service within Navy fire and emergency operations.

Commander, Navy Installations Command oversees global Navy shore installation management, including infrastructure development, sustainment and quality of life programmes. The organisation manages 10 Navy regions and more than 70 installations, employing over 48,600 personnel focused on readiness, training and support for fleet operations.

According to the command, Navy installations function as operational platforms essential to supporting global naval missions and maintaining overall fleet readiness.

Pilots, mechanics and teams: Why expanding fire seasons are creating urgent new aviation career paths

Expanding wildfire seasons are increasing demand for skilled aviation professionals across, writes Stacy Collette, Employee Relations Coordinator, Neptune Aviation

At the height of wildfire season, the day at an airtanker base doesn’t begin when smoke is visible on the horizon.

It begins long before that, in the quiet discipline of preparation.

Crews are up early performing maintenance inspections, reviewing aircraft status and preparing for immediate launch.

Operational briefings with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) align teams on fire behaviour, weather systems, airspace coordination and mission objectives.

Mechanics complete detailed pre-flight inspections.

Structural and avionics specialists work through discrepancies, troubleshoot systems and ensure every aircraft meets airworthiness standards before it ever leaves the ground.

Behind the scenes, maintenance control, parts specialists, logistics coordinators and planners are continuously tracking aircraft status, anticipating needs and preparing for next-launch readiness.

It is all part of a highly synchronised effort, and without these skilled professionals, the mission could be grounded.

As wildfire seasons expand in both length and intensity, the demand for mechanics, technicians, pilots and specialists who power this effort continues to grow, opening new career pathways in aviation.

Escalating risk, escalating demand

Wildfire seasons are no longer confined to a few summer months.

Data from Climate Central shows that wildfire season has lengthened by more than 100 days since the 1970s.1 What were once regionally concentrated events now stretch across multiple states and longer operational windows.

Meanwhile, many wildfires in the past were left to burn when they took place within wooded, unoccupied areas, since fire is a natural occurrence that helps to revitalise forests.

That has changed over the last three decades.

Between 1990 and 2020, the wildland-urban interface (WUI), which is the area where human development intermingles with wildland vegetation, added 179,000 square miles.2 The number of homes built within the WUI also grew by 47% during the same period.

3 Fires that burned in remote areas now threaten homes, infrastructure and entire communities, requiring faster and more sustained suppression efforts.

With the current state of wildland firefighting, the USFS and other fire management agencies are now leaning more heavily on aerial assets for initial attack and sustained suppression, meaning demand for skilled professionals isn’t confined to pilots, it expands to the entire aviation ecosystem in order to keep aircraft mission ready.

The talent gap is broader than we think

The aviation industry as a whole is currently navigating a well-documented pilot shortfall, with projections indicating that demand in 2026 could exceed available pilots by 24,000.4

The workforce challenge extends well beyond the cockpit; aerial firefighting operations also depend on licensed aircraft mechanics, structural specialists, certified non-destructive testing (NDT) professionals, machinists and design engineers, avionics technicians and maintenance control personnel.

Wildland firefighting requires professionals who can make quick decisions in a fast-moving environment.

Aircraft routinely operate at low altitudes, in high temperatures and under repeated structural stress.

Maintaining airworthiness under these conditions requires deep technical knowledge and years of hands-on experience, and we are finding that while there are talented new graduates entering the aviation trades, the level of expertise required for specialised aerial firefighting operations takes years to develop, and we need more of them now, than ever before in aviation history.

For mechanics, a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) licence is foundational.

Beyond that, they should pursue specialised training in:

  • NDT: There are several different types of certifications available to secure.
  • Mechanics should maintain their logbooks to track X-rays or penetrant testing they have completed, and if they have leveraged any chemical processing tests.
  • Structural repair and composite work and
  • Avionics troubleshooting

Electrical experience is a plus.

Building a breadboard, understanding electrical current, understanding how to chase a wire and how to ensure that something will function effectively with the other electronics is key.

Pursuing Inspection Authorisation (IA) certification through the FAA, which authorises mechanics to sign off on advanced repairs, is also helpful.

Hands-on experience is what truly differentiates candidates.

Exposure to complex aircraft modifications, heavy maintenance checks and real-world troubleshooting under compressed operational timelines builds long-term capability.

For pilots, turbine time, low-level flight experience and strong Crew Resource Management (CRM) discipline are essential.

It is an entirely different world for pilots when they are stationed at an airbase to battle wildfire than at an airport for a commercial flight.

It is important for us to recognise the shift in responsibility, and to leverage capacity differently for aerial firefighting pilots.

Attracting the right professionals to aerial firefighting also requires addressing common misconceptions.

One is that the work is seasonal or short-term.

While wildfire activity and the flying season peak during the summer months, the preparation, maintenance, training and planning are year-round endeavours.

Aircraft return throughout the wildfire season for routine maintenance, structural evaluation and inspections, while annual maintenance for aircraft is handled during the winter months to prepare for the year ahead.

Another misconception is that the job is all adrenaline and flying.

In reality, pilots and crews can be stationed at an airbase for extended periods awaiting deployment.

Success depends less on continuous flight operations, and more on meticulous preparation, engineering and mechanical precision, regulatory compliance and disciplined teamwork behind the scenes.

If mechanics cannot move a plane forward through their FAA checks, it doesn’t fly, and many entering the field are surprised by how technically advanced and methodical the work is, especially on the maintenance, fabrication and systems side.

Aerial firefighting captures public attention during dramatic fire events, but that is the culmination of weeks or months of preparation.

Career pathways to aerial firefighting

While recruiting can be challenging, there are well-established pathways professionals pursue leading up to careers in aerial firefighting.

Understanding those pipelines helps operators target the right talent and build sustainable workforces.

The common pathways for mechanics and technical personnel include:

  • FAA-certified A&P programmes located all across the U.S., which produce highly qualified aviation maintenance graduates every year
  • Technical trade schools for machining and avionics
  • Military aviation maintenance backgrounds are a great common pathway
  • Entry-level shop apprenticeships
  • Internships with aviation operators like us or MRO facilities are spot on

Aviation maintenance and flight operations transfer very well into aerial firefighting due to their adherence to methodical execution.

Many members of the Neptune team transitioned directly from the military, and they adapted seamlessly, complying precisely with quality assurance requirements.

Implementing internship and/or apprentice programmes are particularly effective recruitment tools.

Organisations that invest in these programmes can tailor their curriculum to develop the skills mechanics need to attain their licences and A&P certification.

They can also be trained and certified on the specific aircraft the organisation operates.

At Neptune, they are certifying on the BAE 146 or the Commander 690, and in our general aviation shop they’re certifying on King Airs and Pilatuses.

Training on the exact aircraft operated shortens the learning curve and strengthens retention.

For pilots, many of them begin in commercial aviation, agricultural aviation, military service or rotor-wing operations.

Many are drawn to aerial firefighting seeking a career where they can have an impact.

We have found that those who successfully transition have had significant fixed-wing time (commercially based).

Fire experience is always a plus, as well as experience with low-level flying.

Many pilots gain that experience working for a survey company at one point, or other positions that require low-level flying.

That is critical, because during wildfire operations, aircraft fly 150 feet above the tree line, and that is something that you must know how to do in order to complete successful retardant drops.

Retention through culture

Technical skills open the door, while culture determines organisational success and retention.

Leading employee relations, much of my time is focused on ensuring team members feel valued, supported and that they are positioned for professional growth.

Some accomplish that through continued progression in their current role, while others take the option to transition into new, more challenging positions at the company.

The effort needs to begin early.

By introducing young adults, even high school and middle school students, to opportunities in aviation and the skilled trades, we can get them engaged.

Kids are excited about how and why things work, and if we continue to encourage and inspire that through our recruitment efforts, we can build an aerial firefighting workforce that is ready when wildfire strikes, and when our communities need us the most.

New cockpit technology simplifies Helitak Fire Tank operations for pilots

Tabula has launched a partnership with Helitak Fire Fighting Equipment to link aerial drop execution with real-time fireground intelligence.

The Mosgiel-based company announced the integration on 23 April 2026 to connect Helitak Fire Tank hardware with the Tabula FireVision platform.

This system captures and shares targeted drop data in real time to help operators and incident controllers move toward informed action.

Aerial firefighting has traditionally relied on post-drop observation and radio communication to assess the effectiveness of a mission.

The new integration removes this disconnect by allowing operators to capture precise data on where and how drops are deployed.

Information is shared instantly with fireground command to enable faster and more accurate retargeting for follow-up drops.

Manual reporting and interpretation are reduced through this continuous feedback loop between the aircraft and the ground.

TracPlus examines human factors in wildland firefighting AI use

Wildland firefighting AI accountability

TracPlus has published a new white paper examining how aerial agencies can manage the adoption of artificial intelligence with transparency and accountability.

The document, titled AI Makes the Call. Who Answers for It?, provides an industry-informed perspective on the increasing role of automated systems in fire operations.

TracPlus is an operational data infrastructure provider that monitors more than 2,500 wildfire suppression aircraft across 44 countries.

The paper identifies that AI systems are already influencing how decisions are made while governance structures are still in a state of evolution.

National agencies including CAL FIRE, New Zealand’s Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) and Australia’s national aerial firefighting program use the platform as their system of record.

The infrastructure holds more than a billion flight records and collects approximately one million new operational data points every day.

Operational data and human judgment

The white paper highlights how AI systems can change how human judgment is applied during wildland firefighting operations.

Research indicates that the reliability of these tools depends on the quality and visibility of the underlying data.

Todd O’Hara, Chief Commercial Officer at TracPlus, said: “AI is becoming part of the operational toolkit, and that’s a positive development.

Todd O’Hara named TracPlus CEO in leadership transition

TracPlus leadership change takes effect in May

TracPlus has appointed Todd O’Hara as Chief Executive Officer, with the change taking effect on 1 May 2026.

TracPlus announced the appointment on 17 April 2026 from Auckland, New Zealand.

John O’Hara, Chief Executive Officer since 2024, will become President and will continue to lead strategic partnerships and senior agency relationships.

The company described the move as the conclusion of a six-month leadership transition.

Todd O’Hara has served as Chief Commercial Officer and has been part of the TracPlus executive team since 2020.

The announcement states that he led the company through a period of expansion that included the onboarding of CAL FIRE and the rollout of the FireFlyte solution.

His previous leadership roles included positions at Spidertracks and Airways New Zealand.

He also served earlier with the New Zealand Defence Force.

TracPlus said O’Hara is a pilot and flight instructor rated across helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft and gliders.

TracPlus sets out new executive roles

The company said John O’Hara joined TracPlus as Chairman in 2020 and took on the Chief Executive Officer role in 2024.

As President, he will continue working with Todd O’Hara and the executive team on senior agency engagements and strategic partnerships.

North East rail safety patrols stop lineside fires using drones

Lineside fires stopped during Easter patrols

Network Rail has used drone technology during Easter anti-trespass operations across Teesside, County Durham and the North East, including incidents where two lineside fires at Seaham and Horden were prevented from spreading without disrupting services.

Network Rail said the joint rail safety operations ran from 7 to 17 April in partnership with the British Transport Police (BTP) and Northern, with activity focused on known trespass hotspots.

The two-week programme is in its sixth year and forms part of anti-trespass prevention work aimed at reducing unsafe behaviour on and near the railway.

Specialist teams worked on the railway alongside BTP officers and Northern staff, using drones to monitor hard-to-reach areas, identify risks early and respond before incidents occurred.

Network Rail mobile operations managers were deployed in road vehicles and onboard trains, working with BTP officers and Northern colleagues to identify incidents.

During the first week, joint patrols were carried out between Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Drone operations around stations and sidings in the region prevented two lineside fires at Seaham and Horden from escalating, with no disruption to services.

On both occasions, the individuals fled after spotting the drone.

Phil Gowland describes how patrols operate

A mobile operations manager recorded the youths and used a thermal imaging camera to track them as they tried to conceal themselves in nearby trees and bushes.

Once they had moved away from the railway, the mobile operations manager extinguished both fires fully and confirmed it was safe for train operations to continue.

Phil Gowland, Network Rail local operations manager, said: “The Easter school holidays are a key time for us, and this is the sixth year we’ve run this anti-trespass prevention activity.

“The aim is simple: to get the message out that trespassing is dangerous and not acceptable, particularly for young people.

“What we tend to do is have a colleague in the cab of a train.

“If they spot someone trespassing, they can radio straight through to a BTP patrol vehicle that’s travelling alongside the route.

“That means our response time can be as little as five minutes, and we’re able to get there quickly and deal with it.

“The use of drones has been a real game changer for us.

“We now use them in specific hotspot areas where we’ve had ongoing trespass issues.

“They’ve helped us stop fires, identify landslips and even catch people just before they step onto the railway.

“Being able to warn people early and prevent danger has been hugely beneficial.”

This week, from 13 to 17 April, operations expanded to include Eaglescliffe to Saltburn, Billingham to Nunthorpe and the Darlington to Bishop Auckland line, with patrols again focused on known trespass hotspots using drones and ground teams.

Gowland added: “I’ve seen first-hand what can happen when people trespass, and it’s not nice – not for the individual if they’re injured or worse, and not for our colleagues either.

“The good news is this approach works.

“We see a significant reduction in trespass during and after these operations, particularly over Easter and the summer holidays.”

Network Rail said the Easter patrols form part of its longer-term work with train operators and the police to keep passengers, staff and local communities safe.

Fatal LaGuardia crash raises fire vehicle safety questions

LaGuardia collision leaves two pilots dead as investigators examine runway movements, staffing and emergency response

A week after a fatal collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, investigators are still piecing together how an Air Canada Express regional jet came to strike an airport fire vehicle on the runway shortly after landing.

The crash, which happened late on 22 March 2026 local time and was still dominating coverage through 23 and 24 March, killed the aircraft’s two pilots, injured dozens of other people and forced the closure of one of the United States’ busiest airports for much of the following day.

The aircraft involved was Air Canada Express Flight AC8646, a CRJ-900 operated by Jazz Aviation, arriving at LaGuardia from Montreal.

According to officials, it was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members.

The fire vehicle it hit was a Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting unit, known as ARFF, which had been responding to a separate incident involving another aircraft.

In the days since the crash, the focus has shifted from the immediate rescue effort to a wider examination of what was happening across the airfield in the minutes before impact.

Questions have centred on runway clearances, the handling of a separate aircraft emergency, the workload of overnight controllers and the limits of the systems used to track vehicles moving on the ground.

Collision took place after landing

Authorities said the crash took place at about 11:37 pm on Sunday 22 March, shortly after the Air Canada aircraft landed at LaGuardia.

Kathryn Garcia of the Port Authority said the fire vehicle had been dispatched only minutes earlier to assist another plane that had reported an odour issue.

Air traffic control audio reviewed by multiple outlets appeared to capture the final moments before the impact.

In the recording, a controller can be heard warning the vehicle to stop as it crossed the runway.

Seconds later, the Air Canada jet struck it.

Photographs from the scene showed the aircraft badly damaged, with the cockpit area torn apart and the rear section resting low to the ground.

The truck was left overturned and heavily damaged nearby.

The National Transportation Safety Board has since said that both the aircraft and the fire vehicle had been cleared to cross the runway, making runway movement and communication a central part of the investigation.

Chair Jennifer Homendy said the inquiry would include cockpit voice recordings, tower communications, surveillance footage and interviews with the controllers who were on duty that night.

Two pilots killed, dozens injured

The two pilots who died were identified as Antoine Forest and Mackenzie Gunther.

Their deaths became an immediate focus in both the United States and Canada, where the flight had originated.

FAA administrator Bryan Bedford described them as two young men at the start of their careers, while Canadian coverage also highlighted Forest’s background as a French-speaking Quebecer.

The Port Authority said 41 people were taken to hospital after the collision.

Early reports varied slightly on the number later discharged, but authorities consistently said that most of those injured were treated and released, while others remained in hospital with more serious injuries.

The two officers in the ARFF vehicle, Sergeant Michael Orsillo and Officer Adrian Baez, were both injured but were reported to be in stable condition.

Baez was later released from hospital, while Orsillo remained under care.

Accounts from passengers suggest that the force of the collision created confusion inside the cabin, with some travellers unsure at first what had happened.

One passenger told The New York Times that the aircraft landed hard, a loud grinding noise followed and the plane then jolted violently.

Another said passengers quickly realised they needed to get out, even though they had little direction in the immediate aftermath.

One of the flight attendants, Solange Tremblay, was reportedly ejected from the aircraft while still strapped into her seat.

Her daughter told a Quebec broadcaster that she suffered a broken leg and required surgery, but survived.

Separate emergency appears central to timeline

A major strand of the investigation concerns the fact that controllers were already handling another issue before the collision.

According to officials and air traffic audio, a United Airlines aircraft had aborted a take-off after reporting an unusual odour in the cabin.

Flight attendants on that aircraft were said to be feeling ill, prompting an emergency response.

The fire truck involved in the LaGuardia collision was being sent to that separate aircraft when it crossed the path of the arriving Air Canada flight.

Audio suggests controllers were continuing to relay messages about the United aircraft while also directing ground movements elsewhere on the airfield.

That overlap has intensified scrutiny of the workload inside the tower at the time.

The NTSB confirmed that two controllers were in the cab during the midnight shift.

One was handling local control duties for take-offs and landings, while the other, described as the controller in charge, also held supervisory responsibilities.

Investigators said they were still establishing exactly who had responsibility for aircraft and vehicle movements on the ground at the moment of the crash.

Staffing and combined positions under scrutiny

CNN’s reporting focused heavily on long-running concerns about staffing shortages in US air traffic control.

Former controllers and aviation analysts told the network that combining positions late at night is common when traffic levels fall, but becomes far more problematic when demand rises unexpectedly or an emergency develops.

That appears relevant to LaGuardia, where late-night traffic may have been heavier than usual because of earlier weather disruption and delays.

Homendy said there is a broader systemic concern when roles are combined because of short staffing, especially in a high-workload environment.

She also said controllers themselves have raised such concerns for years.

The issue is familiar to federal investigators.

Coverage pointed to earlier findings from the January 2025 collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, where investigators said an overloaded controller managing combined positions was among the contributing factors.

A 2024 independent FAA panel had also warned that combined positions can reduce safety margins, particularly during busy periods, overnight shifts or emergencies.

At the same time, some current and former aviation officials have urged caution about drawing conclusions too early.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said LaGuardia was generally well staffed overall, with 33 of 37 controller positions filled and seven more trainees in the pipeline.

Others noted that reduced staffing overnight can be standard practice when traffic is expected to be lighter.

Technology and surface tracking also in focus

Homendy also drew attention to the technical side of the accident.

She said a ground radar system that might have provided an alert before the collision did not do so.

She added that the fire truck did not have a transponder, which would have helped the system detect it more effectively.

That has fed into broader criticism of the age of US air traffic control infrastructure.

Homendy described the system as old and said controllers need better tools to monitor ground movements involving both aircraft and vehicles.

CNN’s coverage tied those comments to wider federal efforts to modernise the system, including a long-term plan announced by the Department of Transportation and concerns that controllers are still working with outdated technology in critical areas.

The New York Times also noted that the FAA has spent several years trying to reduce runway incursions after a series of close calls in 2023.

Those efforts included safety reviews, grants to airports and work on alerting systems designed to warn crews about aircraft or vehicles in the wrong place.

Even so, the LaGuardia collision has shown how vulnerable the system remains when multiple defences fail at once.

Airport disruption and operational impact

The crash closed LaGuardia for much of Monday 23 March, with flights resuming on a limited basis at 2 pm More than 500 flights were cancelled by Monday morning, and some reports later put the total disruption above 600 flights as the backlog continued.

Incoming services were diverted to John F.

Kennedy and Newark Liberty airports, while road closures and traffic delays affected access around LaGuardia itself.

As a major airport focused on regional and domestic routes, LaGuardia’s closure quickly spread disruption across the eastern United States and nearby Canadian cities.

Delta, the airport’s largest carrier, was among the airlines forced to cancel or rebook large numbers of passengers.

The shutdown also collided with wider transport strain linked to a partial federal government shutdown in the United States.

The New York Times reported that long Transportation Security Administration lines delayed the arrival of NTSB specialists, slowing the first full day of on-site investigation.

Canadian response and Air Canada controversy

In Canada, the crash prompted both official support for the investigation and political controversy around Air Canada’s response.

Canadian authorities said they were working closely with US investigators, and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada sent a team to assist.

At the same time, Air Canada chief executive Michael Rousseau came under criticism after issuing a condolence message only in English, despite the deaths of two Canadian pilots and the fact that one of them, Antoine Forest, was from Quebec.

Rousseau later apologised for his inability to speak French adequately, but the issue escalated in Quebec, where lawmakers passed a motion calling for his resignation.

That debate sat alongside broader Canadian concern about the safety issues raised by the crash, particularly the condition of the US air traffic control system.

Investigation continues

One week on, the main facts are clear, but the cause is not.

A landed passenger jet struck an airport fire vehicle that was responding to another emergency.

Two pilots died, dozens of others were injured and LaGuardia’s operations were badly disrupted.

What remains unresolved is how the runway came to be occupied by both the aircraft and the truck at the same time.

Investigators are now examining not just the decisions made in the tower that night, but the wider operating environment around them: staffing, fatigue, late-night procedures, communications, vehicle visibility and the resilience of the airport surface safety system.

The findings are likely to matter far beyond LaGuardia.
