IFSJ Exclusive: Prepared to protect with Telgian

Telgian Vice President and NFPA instructor Ralph E. Bless, Jr., PE, CFPS, SET discusses the CFPS test prep for fire protection training he recently carried out in KSA

Over the past 25 years, countries within the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region have experienced incredible growth. This concentrated, rapid development has led to myriad electrical, fire protection, code enforcement, and ITM challenges.  

As part of the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) commitment to serving global stakeholders such as those in the MENA region, Telgian Vice President and NFPA instructor Ralph Bless provided five days of CFPS test prep for team members from the Saudi Electricity Company fire protection group in Jeddah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. By providing this training for NFPA, Bless supplied participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare them for the CFPS Exam. The CFPS is an essential credential verifying proficiency in mitigating both physical and financial loss from fire hazards. 

Bless has long been recognised as one of the industry’s top experts and he shares this knowledge as a speaker, presenter and instructor across the US and around the globe. He has also published numerous articles on related fire and life safety topics in industry publications worldwide.

Bless is licensed as a Professional Engineer in six US states, a Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Level IV NICET senior fire sprinkler layout technician and holds four additional NICET certifications, as well as ten US state licenses. Dedicated to the industry, he plays an active leadership role within several important fire and life safety organizations including the NFPA.

IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey sat down with Ralph E. Bless, Jr., PE, CFPS, SET, to discuss fire protection training in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Can you tell me about your background in the fire sector?  

I have 40 years of experience in fire protection including a broad range of water-based and special hazard system design, code consulting and fire protection engineering services. I am licensed as a Professional Engineer in six states in the US, a Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Level IV NICET senior fire sprinkler layout technician and hold four additional NICET certifications, as well as ten state licenses.

In addition, I serve on six NFPA committees including Chair of for Record Storage, NFPA 232 as well as NFPA 1, NFPA 13 Installation and Correlating, NFPA 15 and NFPA 915.

How did working with the Saudi Electricity Company fire protection group in Jeddah come about?

NFPA was contracted by the Saudi Electricity Company for in-person CFPS training. The Saudi Electricity Company is the leading provider for the generation, transmission, and distribution of electric power in Saudi Arabia, with 45 power generation plants across the Kingdom.

This training was very important, as these professionals are involved in the electrical power supply for an entire nation. I was thrilled to be selected by NFPA as the on-site instructor, based on my years of fire protection and teaching experience.

What exactly did the training involve and why is it essential for the participants?

Training involved five days of presentations on a variety of fire protection topics, focused on the NFPA Fire Protection Handbooks.  The focus of the training is to provide participants with the knowledge and skill necessary to prepare for the CFPS Exam.

The CFPS is considered “the global gold standard credential” in the fire protection industry.

Was the training a success? Do you have plans for a similar initiative in the future?

The feedback from the participants was very positive and I look forward to working with them again in the future.  Although I don’t have anything currently on the schedule in KSA, I do have over 40 other training events planned for this year.

What did you learn from conducting this training?

It is always a pleasure to work with other fire safety and fire protection professionals around the world.  And during this trip, I was also able to learn a little about the fascinating culture and history of KSA.

I really enjoyed my time in the country. The people were wonderful and welcoming, and I look forward to continuing to work with professionals for the betterment of the industry and society.

IFSJ Exclusive: Inside Newcastle International Training Academy

IFSJ takes an inside look at the fire training on offer at Newcastle International Airport

In 2022, Newcastle International Training Academy, which was officially recognised as a JOIFF Accredited Training Provider by JOIFF, the International Organisation for Industrial Emergency Services Management.

The accreditation, which was awarded by industry experts from the emergency services, recognises training providers who offer high quality training courses, facilities and a great learning experience capable of developing competency of emergency response personnel.

Gerry Johnson and Craig Kelsall, Consultants on behalf of JOIFF, visited Newcastle International Training Academy to undertake an audit of the training provisions and awarded the accreditation later that day. Formally recognising courses such as the Firefighter Bridging and Breathing Apparatus Instructor as trusted high quality training.

Johnson spoke about the accreditation process following the official certification, saying it: “Followed a rigorous audit of three elements of accreditation, including; looking at their establishment, including safety management systems and procedures; instruction, covering instructor experience, qualifications and mentoring systems; and the course programmes, looking at course content, and frequency of updating.”

IFSJ spoke to Gary Wright, Fire Manager at Newcastle International Airport, to find out about its new accreditation and the different kinds of training they have on offer for the fire professionals.

Can you tell me about the history of the training academy, when and why it was set up?

Customers expect quality training, and we believe at Newcastle International Airport that we have the right people and passion to be able to deliver commercial and industrial courses to businesses across the North East.

The Training Academy at the airport has been delivering professional training for nearly 30 years to ensure that fire services are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills. The Academy now provides a range of training solutions including aviation, offshore and industrial firefighting courses, as well as health and safety practices, first aid, confined space and team building.

The Academy delivers training to clients from all over the world, recently including the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

What fire training courses are on offer at the Academy?

The Academy specialises in aviation and industrial fire fighter training, with a range of courses available, including; Breathing Apparatus Training; Fire Fighter (Initial and Revalidations); Supervisor (Initial and Revalidations); plus Fire Team Member and many more.

Our unique infrastructure allows us to offer hot fire training, allowing fire fighters to experience as close to a real-life scenario as possible during their training course on aircraft and industrial specific live simulations.

Why is fire training necessary in the aviation sector? 

Fire training is necessary in aviation in order to save lives in the event of an aircraft accident or incident occurring at or in the immediate vicinity of an airport.

Working on an active safety critical concept area allows our trainers to be up to date with the latest legislation and practices required in aviation.

We hope we never need to use our fire services, however, if the time comes, continual fire training is necessary to ensure that fire fighters are trained to the highest standards and have the knowledge and experience to respond to any situation.

How did the JOIFF accreditation come about, and what does this mean for the Academy?

Neil Crosby, Middle East Aviation Emergency Training Correspondent, talks preparing for all outcomes

No matter where in the world you currently operate there is no more developing and more vibrant than the UAE. The speed at which it is consistently changing a advancing towards it future is remarkable and exciting to witness. Its very evolution from that of fifty years ago to the current day is astounding. Growth, population and infrastructure come coupled to engineering and wealth. The diversity of the cultures and populous is vibrant and attractive to those aiming to be apart of its future.

This metamorphosis of such a region brings with it opportunity and challenge, challenge to build, challenge to growth and challenge to compete. The UAE is synonymous with the intention towards perfection and presence. Its very vision is one of being the very best that can be offered, in lifestyle, accommodation, health and of course its safety, these are accolades bestowed by those thriving in the region or by those who have enjoyed the benefits of visiting lavish localities it has to offer. 

Heat stress

From every angle the evidence of growth and success can be seen, however this does not come with ease or without challenge. The very geographical location presents its own challenges from weather, sun, sand, heat or wind. Emergency services must consider this impact and consider they do.

Engagement in temperatures of 45 degrees or more in the summer months and 35 possibly in the evening hours hamper services to operate effectively or to conduct training. The occupations of those engaged must be monitored with consistent attention to prevent dehydration or exhaustion.

Every aspect of the service during events has an enlarged capacity for consideration due to heat, vehicle and appliance operating temperatures over prolong periods, media resources, equipment inoperability, firefighting actions and fire growth, flammable vapours and fire gas movement, all such occurrences agitate any event loading the considerations of any Incident Commander. The consistently changing locations which emergency services must respond change at a frequency and dimension difficult to imagine.

The city sky lines change almost overnight and the colossal enormity of the structures reach vertically or laterally in all directions. Emergency services must be topically and geographically familiar with their response areas, from a hazard perspective, what may be held within and what could to be to be expected. Typography, risk response, and risk register must become daily appraisals to be proactive as opposed to reactive.

Parking areas in the main are ventilated. However this will not prevent the growth and movement of fire gases within a structure. The challenge to the emergency service will be in the form of access, fuel loading and sheer volume of vehicles parked in close proximity.

Vehicles and their design are captivating to the motorist and to their owner, to an emergency service member, a hazard, a risk, or a dangerous challenge which must be approached in the most considered method. Simple entry or exit of the occupant is not always a straightforward as one would imagine. SUV vehicles have a vast selection of options, their construction materials, seating, and safety or protection systems all pose hazards to the uneducated or the initiated.

The aviation sector

There is one final area in which we must consider a potential: Aviation. Aviation is the most fundamentally changing areas for occupation within the region.  Over the last fifty years there has been a monumental growth in air travel and concept design.

The UAE airports support essentially all that the UAE is and has been to know to have become. Their major airports are fundamentally the beating heart of the UAE and Dubai and the surrounding locations. Their airports consistently brake records of achievement and challenges its self to be the most visual and efficient airports in the world. The aircraft traffic they handle is without question some of the most prominent and efficient the aviation sector has to offer.

Passenger volume is intended to breach 58 million within 2022 and striving to return to the pre Covid figures within 2023. It supports 238 airports, in 227 cities form 102 counties. 

The aviation sector has had to meet numerous challenges in the form of growth, location, expansion, experience, infrastructure, regulation, the weather and more over the vision and the need to succeed.  The sector is dynamic to say the very least, consistently changing, re-evaluating, personally challenging and consistently reacting to market and world forces.  The aerodromes also carries upon their shoulders the knowledge that the region is essentially feeds its sources. Should an event take place at an aerodrome the ripples emanate from the source to far wide reaching locations.

Aircraft movements take place at a frequency of departure and arrival at the most busy of periods at two minute intervals utilising the synchronicity of two runways simultaneously. It is not unusual to have ten aircraft taxiing or manoeuvring at the same time. Passenger loads on the largest aircraft frequency are in the range of six hundred occupants per rotation.

The ripples from an event will be felt the world over should the incident not be correctly handled. Approaching flights, departing flights, aircraft wishing to depart their country unable to arrive at their intended destination, slot allocations and interconnecting flights using the airport as a hub to connect to final destinations all may be impacted during any potential operational event. With this is an ever-present pressure to succeed and to overcome.

Every member of the aerodrome emergency service carries a shared responsibility to perform, to remain competent and operational compliant. It is essential they must remain engaged in all areas of occupation relating to their operational response. The complexity of the location and the frequency of movements dictate that operational fire service members must be appropriately qualified and certificated to for fill their operational responsibilities without restraint.

The constant need to train and to ensure an effective response is relentless. Each and every day there is a need to see a learning opportunity or to educate members on their growing potential risk. To say you know enough, or to believe you can do enough, is never enough.

Aircraft firefighting

Aircraft firefighting is without question one of the most technical fields of occupation, knowledge of the rescue and firefighting equipment provided to meet the risk are extraordinarily technical in their own right and the methods of firefighting based on the aircraft potentially involved are on a scale based around physics, chemical and structural engineering.        

Through developmental changes to the complexities of aerodrome infrastructures, aircraft, and the localities faced by the new generation of fire service members, the rescue and firefighting service must have a more considered approach to command decision making when applying the use of fire fighting and tactical ventilation.

Ventilation can facilitate the passage of ‘wet air’ through the induction of water spray, in elevated locations to infuse and create rapid reductions in compartment temperature growth. The synchronicity of simultaneous applications involves high level intelligent firefighting understanding and an incident command structure with increased tactical advantages.

Incidents must be considered both on and off aerodrome and access to any such incident must be accomplished within the defined response time. Multi-agency interoperability is essential in order to be successful at the scene of operations and the close cohesive working relationship established by all responding services. 

All these and many more considerations must take place in the most challenging of environmental weather conditions or working locations. Crews may be engaged for long and protracted periods of time and successful emergency planning will ensure a successful conclusion at any potential incident location.

There should be a more immersive programme of interoperability within all emergency service within the UAE with one aim, to become the very best the region can provide. They should strive towards the sharing of information, technical excellence and more importantly the overall ability to respond.

There is a wealth of knowledge and experience within the UAE, from overseas external influence, or subject matter experts, previous experience and local intent to succeed. The never-ending vision to demonstrate improvement and to embrace all that could be ahead. The road ahead is bright and yet it will be consistently challenging to those who strive for excellence.

The emergency services must embrace this challenge and many more, with the vision of the UAE and to continue on this journey no matter how difficult or diverse it may be. Draw on the expertise available, learn from the past to build for the future, embrace challenge and strive as an emergency community to prepare for the potential by being prepared.

ASFP updates online passive fire protection training

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has updated its generic Online Introduction to Passive Fire Protection. The course provides a basic overview of passive fire protection (PFP) and its role in the overall fire strategy of a building.

In addition, a new version of the course, Online Introduction to Passive Fire Protection (Installation) has been developed with new content specifically designed to cover the particular needs of passive fire installers.

Delivered in eight learning modules, the new improved Online Introduction course covers key elements of design, installation and inspection. It is intended to provide a first step for those considering a career in the passive fire protection industry.

The learning modules covered are: putting passive fire protection in context; the basics of structural fire protection; introduction to fire resisting walls and floors; introduction to cavity barriers; introduction to fire resisting doors and glazing; introduction to fire resisting ductwork and dampers; introduction to firestopping; and introduction to fire testing and certification.

The Online Introduction to PFP (Installation) has taken the content from the general introduction course and has been specifically tailored for those who undertake installation activities. It contextualises the information in the generic introduction course and provides instruction on particular features and concerns to consider during the installation of passive fire protection systems.

Both courses use images, animations, audio, and video to enhance the learning experience and introduce the key features of each type of passive fire protection system. Each version of the course takes around three hours to complete but can be undertaken at a time to suit, stopping and starting as necessary.

Successful completion will provide learners with a sense of what good fire protection in buildings looks like. This will allow them to better understand the role of the various fire safety measures in the built environment, and in particular passive fire protection.

This partnership has enabled us to create a new industry-leading course which offers an enhanced learning experience, delivering expert knowledge in a clear, concise and engaging format.

“The improved modular format will also enable us to tailor the course to particular industry sectors, as exemplified by our new version targeted directly at installers.”

Training course on lithium ion batteries for firefighters launched by UL

UL Solutions’ Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) has developed “The Science of Fire and Explosion Hazards from Lithium-ion Batteries” online training course to provide actionable insights from the foundational research conducted to date, including a review of lithium-ion battery components, thermal runaway, and how fire and explosion hazards can develop.

The course is designed to help firefighters better understand the physical phenomena that determine how hazards develop during lithium-ion battery incidents and develop strategies to mitigate the associated risks.

The course is designed so that those who undertake it will be able to: describe the construction of lithium-ion cells and identify the unique characteristics of lithium-ion batteries; list the reasons lithium-ion batteries fail and explain the process of thermal runaway; describe the fire and explosion hazards resulting from thermal runaway propagation in lithium-ion batteries; and develop strategies to reduce the risk associated with thermal runaway, including fire and explosion hazards.

Adam Barowy, research engineer, FSRI commented: “We believe one of the most effective ways to combat risks to life safety and minimise sensationalisation of lithium-ion battery thermal runaways is to inform the general public and the fire service about thermal runaway causes, how fire and explosion hazards can develop, and what can be done before and after thermal runaways to minimize the consequences.”

NVFC announces focus for 2023 Training Summit

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has announced that the 2023 Training Summit will feature tracks focusing both on first responder health and safety topics as well as volunteer recruitment and retention.

Taking place June 23-24 in Oklahoma City, OK, the conference will provide an opportunity for firefighters and EMS providers to participate in valuable classroom training, idea sharing, and networking. The expanded Training Summit incorporates the NVFC’s Recruitment & Retention Experience, previously offered as a separate event, to allow more first responders the opportunity to take advantage of courses on a variety of topics.

Registration for the Summit is now open, and includes two days of breakout sessions with nationally-known instructors, keynote speakers, general sessions, networking events, mini vendor expo, and most meals.

The expanded agenda features a selection of 18 courses relating to critical topics impacting the volunteer emergency services, with a focus on physical and behavioural health, safety considerations during different types of response and training, recruiting new volunteer responders, best practices for retaining volunteers, and leadership. The agenda can be found here.

The conference will be held at the Sheraton Oklahoma City Downtown Hotel. The hotel is in the Bricktown district of Oklahoma City, which has a river walk with water taxi, restaurants, shops, and a minor league baseball stadium. As in previous years, the NVFC will offer a networking social event after class concludes on Friday, June 23.

The reception will include a vendor area featuring sponsors and partners. Sponsorships are available. Attendees can also choose to extend their weekend of networking by attending a casual dinner social hosted at the Oklahoma State Firefighters Association headquarters on Saturday evening.

To remove the cost barrier for some attendees, stipends are available that reimburse up to $900 of conference-related expenses, including hotel, airfare/mileage/transportation, and the event registration fee.

IFSJ Exclusive: The true colour of fire with Insight Training LLC

Andy Starnes, Instructor at Insight Training LLC, explains why with thermal imaging camera colour palettes, what you see is not always what you get

Thermal Imaging Cameras offer a variety of application-based colour palettes for the end user to choose from. Certain manufacturers offer as many as 23 different choices of colour palettes. In addition to the variety of colour palettes available, certain manufacturers offer feature specific benefits such as hot spot/cold spot tracker, electronic thermal throttle and more.

With such a variety of choices, options, and applications; it is no wonder firefighters are often seen using these application-based colour palettes incorrectly. How can these colour palettes be used incorrectly?

To properly address this issue, we must first define these various application-based colour palettes and their appropriate and intended environment for use. Each specific colour palette is assigned what is known as false colours by the programming in the thermal imaging camera based on different intensities of radiation at different levels.

Most of these colour palettes have uses that were not originally intended for firefighting – they were intended for low temperature and low contrast environments except fire-based colour palettes such as TI Basic. This is especially important to note as the fireground will have much higher temperatures than most of these colour palettes listed here were intended for.

Fire departments who are choosing thermal imaging cameras would be wise to do their research before purchasing any device that offers many options that may not be applicable to their service delivery model. In other words, if a department chooses a highly complicated device with numerous application specific options, they must invest in thermography-based training for their firefighters to maximise the effectiveness of their investment.

Establishing common ground

Firefighters are quick to recognise the colour palette known as TI Basic. NFPA 1801, The Standard on Thermal Imagers for the Fire Service-chapter 6.6.4.1.9 states regarding colourisation the following:

In the TI Basic mode, the heat colour reference bar shall have a colour scale that includes only the following colourisation: Greyscale — at the bottom of the heat colour reference bar before colour indication begins and shall not be more than 50 percent of the overall height of the heat colour reference bar; yellow at the low end of the heat colour reference bar; orange in the middle of the heat colour reference bar; and red at the high end of the heat colour reference bar.

This colour palette is simple and intuitive for all users to understand except for the following variable: Manufacturers choose when these colours engage, and they are approved by NFPA if they follow the approved colour/temperature progression with no more than 50% of the colour palette being in grey scale.

This creates a problem for firefighters as they can pick up any of the currently certified NFPA 1801 Certified Thermal Imaging Cameras and each will show colourisation at different temperatures at differing pixel percentages and some show colourisation in high and low sensitivity modes.

The issue of non-uniformity in colour temperature correlation continues to worsen when we notice that many manufacturers offer an overwhelming selection of non-firefighting application-based colour palettes such as: Rainbow or High Colour, Iron Bow, Fire & Ice, Black Hot, Green Hot and many more.

One of the best explanations for how and why colour palettes are developed comes from Teledyne FLIR: “In thermal imaging, each individual pixel represents a specific temperature data point. These data points are assigned a unique colour or shade based on their value, meaning that as the thermal sensor detects changes in heat energy, it will express this change by adjusting the colour or shade of a pixel. These pre-set gradients—or thermal palettes—determine pixel appearance and help identify different heat sources throughout a scene.”

By assigning specific temperature data points to a specific colour or shade this allows firefighters to quickly identify areas of interest. But which colour palettes should and should not be used in the realm of firefighting?  Per NFPA 1801, TI Basic is the recommended colour palette for firefighting but there are numerous other colour palettes available for use. The issue is not the colour palettes themselves but the end user and their level of overall knowledge.

Colour palette options

First, the end user must be trained on the specific application-based colour palette. While the temperature and conditions of a scene is the same, each colour palette will detect and interpret the scene differently. By understanding the colour palette and its intended use, a firefighter can use these colour palettes to their advantage in various emergency situations.

According to Dave Lee from FLIR Delta: “Not all colour palettes are well suited for every situation. In fact, some colour palettes can even make your job harder or even hide what you are looking for.”

Iron-Bow: The Iron-bow colour palette is one of the most popular palettes chosen by thermography professionals. It is used extensively in the inspection industry when viewing roofs, solar panels, and electrical equipment. It is also used in pinpointing skin temperature variations in industrial thermal imaging cameras known as EBT or elevated body temperature devices. Many TIC manufacturers do not publish the temperature colour correlations for this palette.

Rainbow Colour Palette: In thermography, the rainbow colour palette is typically used for demonstration purposes to show clients/customers areas of potential interest as the broad spectrum of colours provide a separation of specific areas of interest. It is also used in the electrical industry when inspecting circuit boards and electronic components. In emergency services, this colour palette can lead to confusion for firefighters due to the manufacturer does not publish the colour/temperature correlations.

White Hot: Prior to the addition of TI Basic Plus, the standard colour palette was White Hot. With this, the hottest object within the field of view of the will appear white whereas the coldest object within the field of view will be colorised black. The issue arises when we are trying to determine the areas that are in-between black and white.

Firefighters who use this colour palette would be wise to consider any area that is white (in fire conditions) as hot and cool the area until it becomes black. Shades of grey are not as easy to differentiate as thermographers tell us. When compared to the other options the firefighter must choose from within the various colour palettes; White Hot is the simplest option for staying oriented.

Colour selection criteria guide

In situations such as the fire ground, a firefighter does not have the luxury of time to select from various colour palettes. The end user must ask themselves the following questions: Do I have seconds? Such as a fire or rescue scene? -or- Do I have minutes? Such as a lost person search operation or drone application as pictured here.

When seconds count, newer standard fire service TICs will turn on and default to TI Basic without selecting or pressing any additional buttons other than the power button. If a firefighter is in another application mode other than TI-Basic, they can simply tap the green power button and it will return to TI-Basic. When the end user has more time such as during investigations, size up, or overhaul situations, they can quickly select their colour palette of choice.

The following colour selection criteria guide is designed for applications where time is not of the essence The end user should consider the following questions:

• What am I looking for? High Heat? Low Heat? No Heat?

• What is the background temperature compared to the object of interest?

• What type of Incident? Fire, Lost Person, Haz-Mat, Active Shooter?

• Do I need detail, or Do I need simply to identify the area of interest?

• Who is the operator? Are they colour blind or have issues with their eyesight?

This three-point model can simplify the process.

1) Check Conditions: What are the overall background temperatures compared to the object of interest? Toggle through the available colour palettes while keeping in mind that as the environment changes so will the discernible details. Is this a high heat or low heat situation? Be aware that as the overall temperature increases, the TIC will switch from high to low sensitivity which can cause a loss of detail. If the end user is viewing a high heat scene, they would be wise to stay in an application mode that offers dual gain or high and low sensitivity. If they are viewing a low temperature scene, a single gain application mode will benefit them greatly.

2) Colourisation Adjustment: Certain colour palettes have adjustable temperature/heat spans to highlight areas of interest.

3) Contrast Check: Certain Colour Palettes offer too little contrast for contexts where clarity and detail are of the utmost importance.

In summary, thermal imaging cameras offer a variety of options and features but they cannot be used to their maximum potential without proper education and training. We recommend learning and training on your specific model of thermal imaging camera. Colour palettes and application features vary by manufacturer. This diagnostic tool can be an asset or a detriment. The determining factor of its overall effectiveness is ultimately up to the knowledge, skill, and understanding of the end user.

Aico sees record breaking year for Expert Installer training

Aico has reported a record-breaking 10,000 installers complete their FIA-CPD accredited Expert Installer training throughout 2022.

Expert Installer training is delivered across the UK by Aico’s team of Regional Specification Managers. The one-hour core module of the award-winning Expert Installer training covers the key information required to correctly install domestic fire and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and environmental sensors with details about standards and legislation.

Training sessions are available throughout the UK, delivered in popular locations and onboard Aico’s mobile training and demonstration units to offer accessibility and flexibility for customers.

The course is suitable for many areas of the company’s supply chain, including electricians, fire and rescue services and social housing providers, as well as apprentices.

Upon completion of the training, Aico’s Expert Installers are encouraged to become a member of the Aico Installer Community Online – a connected platform built to support Expert Installers with carefully designed educational challenges to inspire members to expand their knowledge of home life safety devices.

Hochiki Europe launches new training facility

Life safety manufacturer Hochiki Europe has opened its all-new training facility as well as launched brand new online courses to allow customers from all over to upskill for life.

The new classroom is located at Hochiki Europe’s head office in Gillingham, and is set to be a key asset in the organisation’s vision to provide world class training in the life safety industry.

The new training centre will cater for businesses and system partners who want to ensure their employees stay at the forefront of fire safety. The new educational facility will allow companies to send individuals or whole teams to attend life safety courses.

A range of application-led educational content can now be delivered via both online modules and practical face-to-face sessions, either at customer premises or at the brand new classroom. The resources and course content have been compiled by Hochiki’s team of highly experienced training facilitators, who also deliver the face-to-face courses. 

Remote product and systems training is also possible via the new training centre’s large interactive screen which includes an integrated web cam, allowing customers further afield to benefit from the Hochiki team’s expertise.

Within the classroom, engineers will be able to learn at individual workstations which feature working versions of Hochiki’s life safety system, Latitude, along with two loops of devices.

The product boards at each station have also been designed to be able to be swapped out, depending on the course the student is attending – for example fire detection, emergency lighting or hybrid wireless.

Safety training in native language improves understanding says UL

When it comes to safety training comprehension increases when learners can give their complete attention without needing to translate information into their first language, according to UL Solutions.

UL Solutions offers courses in multiple languages through its environmental, health and safety library.

UL said that in terms of safety training, it is particularly important that learners can give their complete attention to the content without the needs to mentally translate the information into their first language: “From the beginning of the course, the learner can focus on the subject matter, not on trying to translate and interpret the material. This can be especially helpful in improving comprehension of essential safety training.

“Misinterpretation can lead to lower productivity, lost revenue, injury and loss of life. This can be especially true in high-risk sectors, such as manufacturing, oil and gas exploration, and construction. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that language barriers contribute to 25% of job-related accidents. Moreover, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that fatal injury rates were 69% higher for foreign-born Hispanic workers than those born in the United States.”

It added: “People learn, understand and retain information best if it is taught in their native language. UL Solutions understands the needs of diverse workforces and offers safety programs in widely spoken global languages. Training in various languages is essential because OSHA requires all of training content to be provided in a language and vocabulary that employees understand.”
