Can you provide an overview of Xact Consultancy and Training?

Xact was founded in 2004 with a mission to provide quality fire safety training, qualifications and apprenticeships which support individuals and stakeholders to maximise their business potential by enhancing their workforce’s competence and skills.

Our offering includes a range of industry recognised and regulated qualifications from level 2 to level 5, targeting a range of fire safety professionals.

As well as bespoke learning opportunities in niche areas of the industry, including hospitals and sports grounds.

Our portfolio offering also includes apprenticeships at Level 3 and 4, providing employers an opportunity to tailor training pathways for their workforce.

How is Xact’s offering meeting the growing demand for competency in the industry?

Post Grenfell, the increased legislative and industry requirement for competency is reflected in the growing service offering Xact provide.

Qualifications and training pathways are now in unprecedented demand, fuelled by the continued shift beyond the traditional competency requirements of fire safety professionals and the need for upskilling across the built environment.

The launch of the Fire Risk Assessment suite of qualifications is just the beginning of Xact’s continued commitment to meeting these expanding training requirements within the industry.

What do Stakeholders tell you is their biggest barrier to learning and how are you addressing this?

Stakeholders report that their biggest barrier to learning is keeping pace with the speed of centrally produced updates.

While they welcome the improvements, many find it challenging to ensure that staff members are continually up to date with legislative updates.

This has highlighted the need for employers and learners to treat professional development as a planned and continuous element of business continuity rather than something reactive.

They also identify ongoing difficulties in recruiting and retaining competent individuals within the fire‑safety sector.

Employers increasingly recognise the importance of engaging potential professionals earlier and developing a sustainable talent pipeline.

To address these challenges, we are promoting apprenticeships as a practical and forward‑looking solution.

Apprenticeships allow employers to use available funding, provide structured learning beyond qualifications and grow talent from within.

This approach supports workforce stability while helping organisations keep pace with evolving standards.

What is the future for Xact Consultancy and Training?

Xact have recently joined the CERTANIA group, an international group working within the TICC environment.

As part of the newly launched UK Buildings and Infrastructure division of which Xact form an integral part of their overarching goal.

Training and development are not a nice to have, it’s fundamental to ensure the entire built environment can continue to expand, upskill and ultimately provide a dedication to the protection of everyday life.

Passing the baton: 1st Attendance challenges compliance culture

Paul Dennett, Owner and Managing Director of 1st Attendance, examines workplace fire training, compliance gaps, and how organisations prepare staff for real incident

Fire safety training is mandatory in UK workplaces, yet many sessions are designed mainly to demonstrate compliance.

Staff can still feel uncertain about spotting early warning signs, making decisions under pressure or using equipment in complex buildings such as universities, retail estates and large commercial sites.

This creates a gap between legal compliance and real preparedness when a fire develops.

1st Attendance delivers practical, instructor-led training in real working environments, using demonstrations and scenario-based discussion to improve risk recognition, evacuation behaviour and confidence.

The company works primarily with public-facing and multi-occupancy organisations across higher education, retail, care and commercial sectors.

Paul Dennett, Owner and Managing Director of 1st Attendance, started as a fire extinguisher engineer and now leads business focused on realism and decision-making.

IFSJ Editor Iain Hoey sat down with Paul Dennett to discuss how effective fire safety education should work today for staff in complex sites across sectors.

How would you describe 1st Attendance’s work and the organisations you mainly support today?

At its core, 1st Attendance delivers practical, face-to-face fire safety training that’s designed to work in the real world, not just on paper.

That includes fire warden training, fire extinguisher training, evacuation training and we also give wider compliance support.

We mainly work with commercial and public-facing organisations — higher education, retail, care environments, offices, and large multi-occupancy sites.

Many of our clients manage complex buildings or have large numbers of staff.

Where do you see the biggest gaps between compliance driven training and real preparedness?

The biggest gap is that compliance doesn’t automatically equal competence.

A lot of training meets the legal requirement but doesn’t change behaviour.

People sit through a presentation, tick the box, and then often forget about it because it isn’t relatable or delivered in an engaging way.

 In a real incident, if the training is not practical or relatable, it simply won’t surface when it’s needed.

Real preparedness comes from: Understanding why risks exist, recognising early warning signs, and knowing how to make decisions, not just follow instructions

How does your training help staff recognise early fire risks and make better decisions?

We focus heavily on risk awareness and decision-making, not just fire theory.

Our training uses real workplace examples, visual demonstrations and scenario-based discussion.

We encourage people to think about what fire risk actually looks like in their environment — poor housekeeping, misuse of equipment etc.

When staff understand risk in context, they’re far more likely to spot problems early and act appropriately.

We also talk openly about human behaviour under stress, so people aren’t surprised by how they and other people might react in a real situation.

Do fire risks and training needs differ across higher education retail and large commercial sites?

Yes — significantly.

While the core principles of fire safety stay the same, the risks, layouts, occupancy types, and behaviours vary a lot between sectors.

A university, for example, has very different challenges to a retail store or a standard office.

That’s why we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.

Training needs to reflect: the type of building, the people using it and how it operates day to day

When training feels relevant, engagement and retention improve dramatically.

Do employers face challenges keeping staff engaged with fire safety training and its lasting value?

Yes, engagement is one of the biggest challenges employers face.

A big part of the problem is perception.

Many people don’t feel that fire is something that will affect them personally — it’s always going to be someone else, somewhere down the road.

Because of that, fire safety can feel theoretical rather than real.

Modern life adds another layer.

My own social media feeds show me fires almost every day because of how algorithms work and the sector I’m in.

Most people’s feeds are very different, so they simply don’t realise how frequently fires actually occur in the UK.

If people don’t believe the risk is real or relevant, it’s difficult to keep them engaged.

That’s why training has to close that gap by showing how often incidents happen, how quickly situations develop, and how easily everyday risks can escalate.

Lasting value comes from: keeping sessions interactive, making the content relatable and linking training to real responsibilities

We also encourage employers to see fire safety training as part of a wider safety culture, not a once-a-year exercise.

When it’s treated that way, the learning sticks and people are far more likely to act appropriately when it matters.

Are there any areas of the training offer you are looking to develop or refine?

Yes — we’re actively developing our blended learning approach, combining high-quality face-to-face training with digital support tools.

The aim isn’t to replace practical training, but to reinforce it — refresher content, reminders, and ongoing awareness so learning doesn’t fade after the session ends.

We’re also refining how we support organisations with repeat training cycles, so knowledge stays current as staff change and sites evolve.

What should organisations prioritise so fire safety training improves outcomes in real incidents meaningfully?

The biggest priority is quality over convenience.

Organisations should ask: Does this training actually prepare people for real situations? Would staff know what to do under pressure? Is the training specific to our environment?

Fire safety training should build confidence, awareness, and decision-making ability — not just satisfy a requirement.

When organisations get that right, compliance takes care of itself, and outcomes improve when it matters most.

SOCOTEC says apprenticeships programme supported 450 staff across five years

Apprenticeships investment and participation figures

SOCOTEC UK & Ireland has reported an investment of around £2 million in apprenticeships over the past five years, supporting more than 450 employees on programmes.

The company’s update said it ended 2025 with 130 new apprentices starting in the year, which it described as its highest annual intake so far.

It added that it currently has more than 200 active apprentices and more than 120 managers supporting them.

Lisa Massey, HR Director at SOCOTEC UK & Ireland, said: “We’re incredibly proud of how our learning and development opportunities have enhanced the careers of so many colleagues.

“Some of our people have been working on their courses for up to five years, showing real tenacity and determination to get to the end of their learning journeys.

“This investment isn’t just about numbers – it’s about creating genuine career pathways and recognising the exceptional talent we have throughout the business, from early careers apprentices to upskilling employees at every stage of their career.”

Courses, providers and staff progression examples

The company said its apprenticeship programmes span 50 different courses delivered through 26 apprenticeship providers, covering early career professionals as well as employees looking to change roles or build skills at different career stages.

It highlighted Lee Dando’s progression after joining SOCOTEC in 2017 as a Rig Co-ordinator, with the business stating he moved through business improvement manager roles before becoming Field Operations Director in early 2025.

Dando said: “I’m 53 now and have been in the industry since I was 17 years old.

“It’s taken me a while to become a director, but it’s only taken me eight years to become a director at SOCOTEC.

“However, you don’t just become a director, that’s where SOCOTEC stepped in and trained me to be ready for this challenge.

“To become a director in just eight years illustrates SOCOTEC’s commitment to recognising and developing talent.

“The business saw my potential and essentially said to me, ‘If you want to grow, we will support you’ – that is a testament to the business, not just me.”

SOCOTEC said Dando now oversees areas including the Field Services Team, which it described as comprising the drilling division, bio-remediation and plant, plus depot operations and logistics.

It also shared the experience of Nathan Finnan, Senior Site Engineer at SOCOTEC UK & Ireland, describing how he pursued further professional development with the company’s support after working in groundworks, site supervision and project coordination.

Finnan said: “I lost my grandfather recently, and it really made me think about what I want to achieve in my career.

“You could say I should have done it when I was younger, but I’m doing it now, and that’s what matters.

“Better late than never, as they say.

“One thing I’ve learned is that you’re never too old to develop new skills or take on new challenges.”

SOCOTEC said Finnan is working towards a Senior Project Manager role and shared his advice for others considering development.

Finnan said: “Don’t wait for the perfect moment to pursue your goals.

“Life has a way of reminding you that time is precious.

“If you want to develop your career, start now.

“Learn new skills, build relationships, and don’t be afraid to take on challenges.

“You’ll surprise yourself with what you can achieve.”

External recognition and graduation event

SOCOTEC said its learning and development activity has been recognised through a Gold rating in The 5% Club and a Great Place to Work Rating in 2025.

It added that it was also recognised in The Sunday Times Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list last year.

The company said it held its third annual Earn and Learn graduation ceremony at the Pirelli Stadium in Burton-upon-Trent, recognising 85 employees who completed learning and development courses.

It said the event also marked the global launch of SOCOTEC’s Blue Academy, a learning and development initiative intended to expand growth opportunities for staff.

C-TEC sets up CAST team for cause and effect programming support

C-TEC CAST support team announced

C-TEC has formed a specialist CAST technical support team to support its own-protocol CAST life-safety systems, including complex cause and effect programming and pre-project planning.

The company introduced the team as Alex Riley, Sam Rudd and Jake Field, and said the group will also provide personalised on-site technical support.

Riley has been at C-TEC for four years and has worked in the technical support department.

Rudd was initially employed as an SMT process engineer and has been with the company for three years.

Field previously worked in Manufacturing and is described as the newest member of the team.

Terry Gordon, Engineering and Technical Support Manager at C-TEC, said: “The new CAST technical support team means faster and more efficient technical support for our customers.

“Alex, Sam and Jake were chosen for their technical and people skills and willingness to assist in any situation.

“I am thrilled to have them on board.”

The company said Riley, Rudd and Field also host ZFP and XFP addressable fire system training at its manufacturing facility in Wigan.

The same statement said they also deliver off-site training for customers in the UK and overseas when needed.

C-TEC outlines related technical support changes

C-TEC also said it has introduced other initiatives to boost technical support services.

The company said this includes a dedicated technical support telephone number, a cloud-based AI-enabled call logging software system and the appointment of additional technical experts to strengthen the existing team.

NEBOSH Verified service introduced to recognise international training standards

New NEBOSH Verified service launches to provide training recognition

The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) has launched a new service to provide exclusive recognition for training providers.

NEBOSH Verified offers expert verification of the quality and impact of health and safety programmes.

Only a select number of courses will be verified at any given time to uphold the board’s globally respected standards.

This approach ensures each programme undergoes a robust review process to meet benchmarks for excellence in health and safety training.

International and UK organisations achieve first NEBOSH Verified status

Arabian Pipeline & Services Co. Ltd. ANABEEB is the first international organisation to have a course verified through the new service.

The Saudi-based industrial services and maintenance company serves process industry clients across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

ANABEEB Chief Executive Officer, Raed Alghamdi said: “We extend our sincere appreciation for the announcement of the collaboration between Anabeeb and NEBOSH.

“This collaboration is a step forward, highlighting a shared, strong commitment to Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) excellence.”

Phoenix Health and Safety is the first UK organisation to receive the verification.

The company is a NEBOSH Gold Learning Partner and provider of health and safety qualifications.

National Training Academy launched for fire-stopping training at ROCKWOOL UK site

ROCKWOOL UK has launched a national Training Academy for construction and building safety professionals at its West Midlands global centre of excellence for fire-stopping.

The company said the purpose-built Academy will deliver best practice learning and practical, hands-on training around the use and application of its products for construction professionals, including specifiers, installers and fire engineers, as well as estate managers from the public and private sectors.

Fire-stopping courses are due to begin in January, with further topics being added through 2026.

The facility is described as providing expert-led practical sessions alongside specification and installation guidance aimed at supporting building performance, compliance and safety.

Course structure and content

The one-day fire-stopping course has been designed so it can be delivered to meet the attendee’s level of experience, whether they are a novice, intermediate or advanced professional.

Firefighter apprenticeships assessment milestone earns SFJ Awards national EPA recognition

Why firefighter apprenticeships are central to SFJ Awards

SFJ Awards has been named End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPA) of the Year (SME) at the Federation of Awarding Bodies (FAB) Qualification and Assessment Excellence Awards for its work assessing apprentices in the emergency and protective services.

The award recognises the organisation’s role in delivering End-Point Assessment (EPA) as the final stage of apprenticeship programmes.

EPA is used to test the knowledge, skills and behaviours apprentices gain during their training before they complete their apprenticeship.

According to SFJ Awards, the recognition relates in particular to its assessment activity across emergency and protective services roles.

Firefighter apprenticeships reach 3,000 EPA assessments

SFJ Awards stated that since 2019 it has assessed thousands of apprentices working in the emergency and protective services.

The organisation recently completed its 3,000th Operational Firefighter EPA earlier this year.

SFJ Awards operates as a not-for-profit organisation delivering nationally recognised awarding and assessment services.

Its work covers apprentices in roles such as apprentice firefighters, police community support officers and emergency service contact handlers.

Judges praise customer-first assessment approach

The Federation of Awarding Bodies reported that an expert panel of judges commended SFJ Awards for its customer-first approach.

The panel highlighted the support provided to those working in the emergency services, including a 24/7 assessment service.

SFJ Awards explained that round-the-clock assessment options aim to make the last stage of an apprentice’s journey a positive experience.

For fire and rescue chiefs and senior officers, the completion of 3,000 Operational Firefighter EPAs indicates that large numbers of firefighters have now been assessed through nationally recognised processes.

ASFP Awards 2025 reveal the passive fire projects setting new benchmarks

ASFP Awards 2025 mark record entry levels

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) celebrated the ASFP Awards 2025 with a record field of entries recognising achievements in passive fire protection across the built environment.

The organisation said the ceremony highlighted individuals, companies and projects that have advanced safety and professionalism in the sector.

ASFP reported that categories covered installation projects, innovation, digital tools, training, marketing, customer service, advocacy and long-term contribution.

The 2025 awards formed part of its 50th birthday year activities.

Project and innovation winners span heritage and redevelopment

ASFP reported that Checkmate Fire Solutions won Small-Scale Installation Project of the Year for its passive fire protection upgrades at Springfield Mount for the University of Leeds.

The association stated that the scheme involved a series of Victorian residential buildings and was recognised for combining sensitive heritage refurbishment with current fire-safety requirements on a project under £1 million.

Kilnbridge Fire Protection received Large-Scale Installation Project of the Year for its role in the Olympia redevelopment.

ASFP said the Kilnbridge team coordinated more than 32,000 compliant passive fire protection installations across one of the UK’s most complex multi-plot sites.

Siderise was named Innovation Project of the Year for a pleated rainscreen cavity barrier solution developed for the G-Gate building at Olympia.

According to ASFP, the bespoke design addressed the building’s unconventional façade geometry and was cited as an example of collaborative fire safety engineering.

Quelfire won Digital Innovation of the Year for its QuelSelector tool.

The association described QuelSelector as an intuitive, free-to-use system that supports firestopping product selection and compliance by reducing errors and improving workflow efficiency across the supply chain.

ASFP Awards training and academic achievements recognised

ASFP stated that Siderise, Corrodere and Isoler received Training Recognition awards.

The association said these organisations were acknowledged for training programmes that link regulatory requirements, product knowledge and on-site installation practice.

Level 2 and Level 3 Academic Achievements were awarded to Stephen Richards of Avert Fire and Rick Cullen of Intoheat.

ASFP reported that Stephen Richards achieved the highest score at Level 2, while Rick Cullen achieved the highest score at Level 3.

The association noted that these academic awards recognised emerging professionals who are investing in their technical development in passive fire protection.

Customer service, advocacy and lifetime honours announced

ASFP confirmed that Quelfire also received Marketing Campaign of the Year for its “Because It’s Your Job to Know” campaign.

The association said the campaign was recognised for promoting shared responsibility in passive fire protection practice.

GSI Contract Services and Nullifire were named Supplier Relationship of the Year.

ASFP stated that the partnership was highlighted for its collaborative technical approach, including the launch of GSI’s training academy supported by Nullifire.

Optima Systems received Customer Service of the Year for the work of its OPTech team.

The association said the team was recognised for delivering rapid, evidence-based guidance that supports compliance on complex projects.

Margherita Mullis of Promat was named Rising Star of the Year.

ASFP reported that she was recognised for work across product development, regulatory alignment and cross-industry collaboration.

Nineteen Group received Advocate of the Year.

The association cited its role in promoting fire safety awareness across the construction and events sectors.

ASFP presented the Lifetime Contribution Award to Niall Rowan.

The association said he was honoured for decades of work to improve standards, deepen technical understanding and promote a safer built environment.

Past winners of the Regatta Challenge were also recognised, with Belgrade Insulations, Consort and CLM Fireproofing receiving their trophies at the ceremony.

ASFP reflects on 50th anniversary awards

ASFP said the awards provided an opportunity to review progress in passive fire protection as the association marked its 50th year.

The organisation added that the event showcased the breadth of activity across project delivery, training, innovation and advocacy.

Learning + training = understanding: How Insight Training LLC builds thermal imaging confidence

Andrew Starnes, Founder of Insight Training LLC highlights how fire service thermography can assist firefighters, sharing key advice on how it can be utilised and why it is so beneficial

Insight Training LLC, led by Andrew Starnes, focuses on giving firefighters the skills to interpret what they see, apply it in real conditions and integrate thermal awareness into everyday operations.

In this article, Andy discusses how Insight’s programmes translate complex thermography principles into practical fireground tactics, how they adapt to different departmental needs and what developments may change the way firefighters learn and train in the years ahead.

Could you begin by introducing yourself, your background in the fire service and how Insight Training LLC came to specialise in thermal imaging for firefighters?

My name is Andy Starnes.

I began my journey in the fire service as a junior volunteer firefighter following in 1990 under the guidance of my father Joe Starnes, who served as the volunteer Fire Chief in our community.

I began my career in the fire service with Charlotte Fire Department in 1998 and served for over 25 years before retiring at the rank of Battalion Chief in 2023.

During this journey, I was blessed to be involved in Project Kill the Flashover which was started by my father Joe Starnes and his dear friend Chief Shawn Oke.

I was fortunate to begin studying thermal imaging in 2010 through this project.

In 2015, I was injured while preparing one of our acquired structures for a research burn.

While I was out of work for seven months, I was able to research the field of thermography and formed the company Insight Fire Training (Insight Training LLC).

With special encouragement from my wife, I pursued this path beginning in May of 2015 by enrolling in thermography certification courses.

Through intense study and many wonderful opportunities, I was fortunate to develop a thermography-based curriculum for firefighters.

Since then, Insight Fire Training has grown to a cadre of over 20 thermography certified fire service instructors, traveling and training internationally, and we provided consulting services to many fire service product manufacturers.

We also now offer the world’s first collegiate thermal imaging certification through Western Kentucky University in partnership with Kentucky Thermal Institute.

For those unfamiliar with the concept, how would you describe tactical fire service thermography and its importance for modern fireground operations?

Fire service thermography is the process of interpreting qualitative thermal imaging data for the purposes of enhancing strategies and tactics in emergency situations.

It allows firefighters to quickly locate the source of the fire, the direction of the fire spread and the intensity of the fire.

It allows firefighters to ascertain the layout of the structures to quickly search and locate anyone trapped within the structure.

What key principles of thermal imaging should every firefighter understand to make effective tactical decisions during an incident?

Firefighters should be proficient in ten key areas of thermal imaging usage- we will cover five of them here.

  1. Do not over rely on technology.
  • Carry the device: Over 50% of the fire responses surveyed showed that the TIC was being left on the fire apparatus and not being used immediately.
  • Power the device on early: Fire Service TICs are required to be fully operational after 30 seconds of pressing the power button. Firefighters have realized that powering on the device at the entry point or inside the environment is not effective as they must wait on the device to fully power up and in many cases, they then realize their battery isn’t fully charged.
  • Learn to scan properly: Fire Service TICs have been in use since the 1990’s and a six-sided scanning technique was introduced by a firefighter (Woodsworth) which incorporated all sides of the area that firefighters are entering. The issue with this technique is that it advocates that the scan should start high in the room. Firefighters have fallen victim to “tunnel vision” by scanning high and immediately detecting heat. They then fail to scan low to look for victims, hazards and layout of the structure. Many fire service TICs are dual gain which causes the lower cooler environment to darken down when the firefighter scans high. This has also been reported as a contributing factor for missing victims, fire beneath them, stairs and other critically important information. For this reason and more, we advocate a simple four principle of scanning technique that begins with TIC low in the space.
  • Wipe the lens: Firefighters consistently report that their fire service TIC “whited-out” during a fire. Fire service TICs haven’t produced a white out effect due to heat in over 25 years. The most common reason for this problem is the failure to wipe the lens. As a firefighter makes entry to the fire environment, they experience a temperature change and condensation/smoke builds up on their facepiece. It is a common practice to wipe the facepiece so they can see. However, many have not been instructed to wipe the lens on the front of the TIC. This lens is made of germanium and has a scratch resistant diamond lined coating on it to reduce scratches. As a firefighter wipes the lens, the image dramatically improves for a few moments before the lens is covered again by moisture and smoke. This process shall be repeated each time during the scanning process.

What are the most common challenges or misconceptions firefighters face when first incorporating thermal imaging cameras into their work?

The most common misconception is that these devices measure temperatures accurately.

Fire Service TICs are qualitative in nature meaning that they are designed to detect heat emitted by surfaces in the 7–14-micron LWIR range thereby providing apparent temperature measurements.

These measurements are often grossly inaccurate.

NFPA 1801-2021 edition removed the spot temperature feature from TI Basic as it was listed as a contributing factor in three separate line of duty death incidents.

Firefighters are using this device incorrectly to measure lithium-ion battery incidents, spot temperature measurements during overhaul, and there are fire departments that require firefighters to call out temperatures as they move through the fire environment.

This is dangerous and inaccurate.

When combined with the fact, the fire service TICs do not detect gases and can only provide an estimated value; it is not surprising that we see firefighters consistently having problems with these devices.

This is a global issue and will not be resolved until the fire service improves their overall education and training in this area.

What steps do you think the industry should take to build a more consistent and informed approach to thermal imaging training across different fire services?

The current market is moving forward at a rapid pace regarding infrared technologies.

Manufacturers who decide to look beyond traditional methods of producing a “thermal imaging camera” will innovate the future of thermal imaging.

However, the most innovative and advanced technology will not solve the greatest problem in the fire service: a lack of consistent and standardized education and training in thermal imaging.

ASFP launches course to strengthen Passive Fire Design across the built environment

The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) has developed a Passive Fire Protection Design Awareness Course in response to challenges with specification and design in the built environment, the organisation said.

According to the ASFP, the course addresses design-stage decisions that can lead to recurring and costly issues during construction and installation.

The organisation added that the training is available now.

The ASFP stated that the focus is on correct design choices for passive fire materials and systems.

It said the programme is aimed at improving understanding of technical and regulatory drivers for Passive Fire Design.

The organisation indicated that the aim is to support better decisions that improve fire safety and long-term performance.

Early design decisions drive later risk

The ASFP said early-stage choices can create problems at key interfaces during build and fit-out.

It pointed to service penetrations through fire-resisting compartment walls as a frequent source of error.

The organisation also cited integration between structural fire protection and compartmentation systems as an area where coordination often breaks down.

It noted that such issues can lead to additional cost and remedial work.

The ASFP positioned the new course as a route to reduce these known risks through better design understanding.

Course content focuses on interfaces

The ASFP said participants will examine common design issues including insufficient proof of concept.

It added that poor coordination of interfaces will be covered in detail.

The organisation said the course addresses the use of incompatible materials that can compromise fire performance.

It stated that the training explains the difference between insulation and integrity requirements within passive systems.

The ASFP confirmed that risks linked to overcladding intumescent-coated structural steelwork are included.

It noted that this content is intended to align design assumptions with tested performance.

Roles and responsibilities highlighted throughout

The ASFP said the training outlines responsibilities for designers, specifiers, contractors and building owners.

It added that correct design, installation and maintenance are presented as shared duties.

The organisation stated that the course reflects on how regulatory frameworks shape those duties.

It said the objective is to clarify who does what at each stage to maintain fire performance.

The ASFP indicated that clearer role definition can reduce coordination failures at interfaces.

Regulatory context and course availability

The ASFP said the programme reflects on how the Building Safety Act influences responsibilities and compliance standards.

It added that the course positions design choices within this regulatory context.

The organisation confirmed the Design Awareness Course is available now.

It stated that participants should gain a clearer view of the technical challenges driving good Passive Fire Design.
