New tools support planning and deployment of Cygnus SmartNet system
Cygnus has launched two tools to aid in the setup and ongoing maintenance of its SmartNet wireless fire detection and alarm system.
The new Site Survey kit assists in planning and deploying the SmartNet system, while the Portal Programming Unit (PPU) enables wireless firmware and configuration updates for system devices.
The Site Survey kit is equipped with three bespoke detectors, enabling installers to simulate the SmartNet mesh network to assess the system’s compatibility with specific sites.
This tool is particularly useful in environments with structural obstructions, such as thick walls or steel-enclosed buildings, as well as for L5 category systems, ensuring a strong and reliable network from the outset.
Enhanced network reliability and installation efficiency
The Site Survey kit facilitates an optimised sensor network design by allowing installers to confirm signal strength and connection pathways at installation sites.
By conducting an initial survey, Cygnus staff demonstrate the control panel’s connectivity to system devices, providing visual confirmation of multiple communication paths.
This process assists in determining the necessary number of devices and their optimal positioning on-site, which contributes to smoother installations and reduced maintenance call-outs.

The Site Survey kit complements Cygnus’s existing commissioning tools, including the Cygnus Mesh Analyser and Cygnus ALERT monitoring platform, which help maintain the SmartNet system.
The Cygnus Mesh Analyser software visualises the network, displaying device signal strengths and connection routes within the mesh.
It also suggests performance improvements, contributing to reliable, long-term operation.
The cloud-based Cygnus ALERT platform supports real-time monitoring of system events and faults.
By delivering timely notifications, it allows site managers and integrators to respond quickly to issues, enhancing overall site safety.
Portal Programming Unit enables remote firmware updates
The Portal Programming Unit (PPU) facilitates firmware updates and device reconfiguration without requiring physical access to each device, which can be particularly advantageous for hard-to-reach installations.
Installers can activate programming mode, execute updates, and seamlessly reintegrate devices into the main SmartNet network, minimising time and disruption.

Cygnus SmartNet offers scalable, wireless fire detection
The EN 54 certified SmartNet system by Cygnus is a fully wireless solution designed for rapid installation without the need for physical gateways or translating devices.
SmartNet’s mesh technology, which is both self-forming and self-healing, can accommodate various project requirements, from the scalable SmartNet-Pro system, supporting over 2,500 devices, to the SmartNet-100, capable of connecting up to 100 devices from a single control panel.
